Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Students across the Hicksville Public School District celebrated Flag Day on June 14th by participating in a variety of activities designed to teach them about the importance of respecting the American flag and the significance of its colors, stars and stripes. At Lee Avenue Elementary School, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor
Joseph Saladino visited students and spoke to them about the history of the flag. He offered students the opportunity to ask him questions about his own experiences, and distributed informative brochures about the American emblem. At Burns Avenue Elementary School, students gathered for an
assembly that featured a question-and-answer session among students about the flag and kindergartners sang patriotic songs. Students were then treated to dance performances by teachers who had also participated in the districtwide Talent for Troops event in April.

Inaugural Induction Ceremony
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT - Each year, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos recognizes a select group of high school graduating students at each Nassau County high school with the Comptroller Achievement Award for their academic excellence in economics and finance. Recently Comptroller Maragos presented Comptroller’s Achievement Award to Andrew Lewis of Bethpage High School.
Another milestone was celebrated at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) when its inaugural chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) inducted 19 new members this year. These students, attending LIHSA from
throughout Long Island, were recognized not only for their skill on the dance floor but also for their academic achievements and leadership. “These are highachieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,”
said Lead Dance Instructor Dina Denis-Paolucci, who spearheaded efforts to launch the LIHSA chapter of the NHSDA. “I’m really proud of all of you,” she told her students at the induction ceremony. “This is a huge accomplishment

The new campaign features TV, print, radio, outdoor, and digital advertising, video and social media promotion, as well as hundreds of “Every Child Covered” community events across the State where parents can find resources and information, ask questions of Fidelis Care Representatives, and receive help enrolling in a plan. Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students dominated this year’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) Horse Show, hosted by the North Shore Equestrian Center (NSEC) and Long Island University (LIU). Students from the Barry Tech Horse Science program swept several classes of competition. The Barry Tech equestrians performed extraordinarily, earning the highest rankings from Carolyn Vincent, a nationally-rated judge who is licensed by the United States Equestrian Federation, the national governing body of equestrian sports in the U.S. A pair of Plainedge UFSD students took the top spot in four different classes. Jennifer Marinace placed first in Walk/Trot/Canter and Cross Rails, while Jacklyn Stiklickas took first in Walk/Trot and Walk/ Trot/Individual Canter. Savannah Giardina of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich CSD took first in two classes - Walk/Trot/Canter and the Jump Course. Daniel Paulose of the East Meadow UFSD and Brittany Sheehan of the Hicksville UFSD each won honors in two Section A classes; Daniel took first
place in Walk/Trot, while Brittany took fourth; Brittany took first in Walk/ Two Point/Question wile Daniel took second. NUMC BABY SHOWER - Nassau University Medical Center held a baby shower for fifty expectant mothers and their families. The women were provided with a tour of the new labor and delivery suites. With the theme, Our Goal is Zero: Let’s Get Every Child Covered, a new marketing, advertising, and communications campaign is being launched by Fidelis Care this week to raise awareness for the 100,000 children who are still uninsured in New York State, and to highlight the availability of quality, affordable coverage for kids under 19. As a Statewide health plan with more than 1.6 million members, Fidelis Care’s focus is on ensuring that all children have the opportunity for a healthy start in life. “Over the past several years, great strides have been made in reducing the number of uninsured children throughout the State,” said Pam Hassen, Fidelis Care Chief Marketing Officer. “We’ve been proud to be part of this concerted effort, and now, we’re strengthening our commitment to reach families in need. Our grassroots, communitybased outreach has always been the heart of the Fidelis Care mission.” According to the Children’s Defense Fund– New York, over 97 percent of the more than 4.5 million children in the State have health coverage, which is the highest level in history. Students Showcase Their Gifts Sixth-graders shared their artistic and theatrical talents at the North Bellmore School District’s Student Arts League showcase on June 13th. Family members were invited to Newbridge Road Elementary School for skits and an art display. Classes in art and drama, which typically meet twice a month with teacher Alison Hill, are open to sixth-graders from the five elementary schools. An audition is required for interested theater students, and an art portfolio must be created for consideration in the visual arts program.
Students presented skits that they worked on over the last several months. They created the characters, wrote the scripts and stage directions, and chose the costumes. The skits were based on themes assigned to each group including bravery, friendship and mystery. “I was able to get better at acting and working together with groups of people,” said Martin Avenue sixth-grader Amanda Falls, who performed the skit “Lost and Found” with three other students. “It was an experience to remember.”
The visual arts students displayed the four projects they created this year including animal scratch art, wire sculptures, still-life paintings and mandalas. “The showcase gives parents the opportunity to see what we’ve been working on all year and to see how talented their children are,” Ms. Hill said. “The students take pride in their work and are really excited to share it with their families. We are privileged to have this program, which is a special place for children who are gifted in the arts.”
A Night of Recognition Prior to the June 13th Bellmore Board of Education meeting, students enrolled in the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, Winthrop Avenue and Shore Road schools were recognized for achievement in school service, as spelling bee champions and for participation in the Eugene Reichenthal Recorder Festival. In his opening remarks, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo congratulated the students on their accomplishments.
“You’ve proven that you are very special, and we know that there will be great things to come from all of you,” he stated. In addition to the 56 Student Advisory Council reporters and leaders, seven students were honored for their recorder skills, under the direction of teacher Erika Davis. Winthrop Avenue student Samuel Kalish and Shore Road students Otto Velting and Hayden Schneider were recognized as their school’s top spellers. In addition, Shore Road
student Tyler Bissoondial was recognized as a silver medalist in the Life Science category and as a recipient of the Naval Award for Excellence in Science during his participation in the New York State Science and Engineering Fair Broadcom Masters Division. Shore Road students Tyler Bissoondial, Nick Giannaris and Riley Fried were also honored as state and regional winners and national finalists in the 2017 eCYBERMISSION STEM Competition.

Building a Dream Home Levittown’s Salk Middle School sixth-grade students in Kimberly Welsch’s math class enjoyed a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics)
project in which they were challenged with designing their own dream homes. The students first roleplayed both the architect and the project manager. After measuring, using
formulas to calculate the area, and sketching floor plans to scale on graph paper, students brought these ideas to life by creating models of their schematic designs.

Celebrating the American Flag
The Wantagh School District’s elementary schools were a sea of red, white and blue as Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary school students celebrated Flag Day on June 14th. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the
American flag in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress and is a time to reflect on the importance of this symbol. At each of the schools, there were patriotic speeches and performances by the bands and choruses, as well as the raising of
the flag on the schools’ flagpoles. At Mandalay School, select first-graders gave speeches about the flag’s symbolism and the country’s original flag, followed by patriotic songs including “The Fifty Nifty United States” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

In the semifinal round, Clarke presented both sides of the case — the plaintiff and defendant against Iroquois High School and Postdam High School, respectively — before a panel of judges. Emerging victorious over both schools, Clarke advanced to the finals, where the team served as the plaintiff’s lawyers and witnesses to win the Mock Trial Championship
against Regis High School. “I am extremely proud and humbled by the team’s accomplishments,” said Paul Henning, the Clarke Mock Trial adviser. “Their focus and commitment is inspiring and has created a positive environment for future teams to emulate and aspire to achieve. The East Meadow Union Free School District’s Board of Education recently unanimously appointed David Casamento as the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. Mr. Casamento returns to East Meadow after a 27year educational career that began in the district as an AP chemistry/biology and chemistry teacher at W.T. Clarke High School in 1990, a position he held until 2005. Mr. Casamento most recently held the position of director of science and technology for the East Williston Union Free School District, a post he held for seven years. In this position, he was responsible for the supervision and evaluation of the science, technology and instructional technology teaching staff, as well as curriculum alignment and development, professional development and establishing a technology vision for the district. Prior to that, he served as director of science and instructional technology in the Huntington School District, and was the director of science for the North Babylon Union Free School District. “On behalf of the entire

Music for an Environmental Cause Division Avenue High School’s Tri-M Music Honor Society, under co-advisers Matthew Nobile and Alison Sellars, hosted an Acoustic Café in the school’s Kim Foglia Memorial Garden on June 7th. Students and teachers Michael Bastone, Mark Martuffi and Alison Sellars performed in an openmic night format as they
enjoyed coffee and desserts. Approximately $300 in proceeds will be donated to the Landfill Harmonic Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay to assist with their travel and expenses. The Landfill Harmonic Recycled Orchestra is a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. It is comprised of children of all ages, many
of which live in poverty and are not exposed to music education. Under the direction by Favio Chavez, the students make their own instruments out of materials found in a landfill, which covers a large portion of their everyday living environment. When their story went viral, the orchestra was catapulted into the global spotlight.
Word Masters Twenty-three thirdgraders from Northside School in Levittown were selected to participate in the Word Masters Challenger. Word Masters is a national competition similar to Mathletes, but instead of solving math problems, competitors in grades 3-8 solve word analogies. Members of Levittown’s first Word Masters team were selected by their classroom teachers based on their diligent work
ethic and were instructed and prepared by speech teacher Tracy Alber. The team met weekly for an hour after school to study vocabulary, word origins, parts of speech and definitions to prepare for the challenges. Mrs. Alber also devised online games for the students to play at home to reinforce their word knowledge. There were three nationally set tests given in the course of the year. A score of 20 was the highest
score that could be achieved on a test. The students had a great first year with Jianna Testamark named the overall Northside highachiever with a score of 17 on each of the three tests. Daniel Smith was the highscorer on an individual test with a score of 19, and Michael Dittmer was the most-improved Word Master, having doubled his score from the first to the last test.

Cut for a Cause
Students enrolled in the Levittown School District took part in the Cut for a Cause event in support of the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Program. Coordinator Nara Denson explained that participants enrolled in the district’s 11 schools have been growing their hair for the past year in order make
the eight-inch or more cut that will eventually be transformed into wigs to benefit those recovering from cancer or illnesses resulting in hair loss. This year, school’s individualized their events. At East Broadway, the 41 girl volunteers chose a special person in their lives to make the initial
cut. Wantagh’s Glamour Addicts Salon then treated the girls to haircuts. At MacArthur High School, students lined up in a salon-style environment, where their hair was measured and then cut by professional stylists. More than 40 students, both male and female, made the cut.
Senior Athletes Honored During the June 14th Wantagh Board of Education meeting, track coach Kristen Ford honored the senior athletes for their outstanding character, leadership and dedication to the track and
field program. According to Ms. Ford, Charles Doherty, William Goldrick, James McVeigh, Rocco Piccirillo, Emanuele Putrino, Matthew Schoeder, Robert Seaman, Brian Tretter and Sandra
Re each made a significant impact on the sport over the past four years, inspiring the team to achieve several accolades and leaving an impression on their teammates and coaches.
