The Beth C. Tortolani Foundation Helps Provide Counseling and Support for Low-Income Breast Cancer Patients The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Beth C. Tortolani Foundation which allows the program to provide free social work services to ensure that underserved women are able to overcome barriers to care. These services include bilingual counseling and
patient navigation for breast cancer patients treated at local hospitals and provide referrals to community agencies that provide assistance such as food, transportation and legal services. The grant also helps to facilitate a Spanish-language support group, called Cafecito, held twice a month in Westbury. “Our licensed social workers offer free bilingual counseling to breast cancer patients treated at Nassau University Medical
Center (NUMC) as well as those referred from other local hospitals,” says Reyna Machado, assistant director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. In addition to the hotline - 800.877.8077 - the Adelphi Program offers a live chat with a licensed social worker, support groups in English and Spanish and referrals to free or low-cost mammography screening.

Fifteen students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech took top honors at the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse earlier this spring. Students participated in a series of timed events related to their courses of study at Barry Tech, as well as in competitions in leadership and professional development. One student earned a distinguished post as an officer at the national level. Barry Tech boasts nine first-place winners at the state level. Three were part of the American Spirit Team: Vanessa Guerra and Leilany Melenciano of the Freeport UFSD, and Samantha Herrera of the Port Washington UFSD, all of whom are studying Medical Assisting. Two were members of the Community Action Plan Team: Taylor Brandofino from the Plainedge UFSD
and Madison Kelly from the Valley Stream CHSD, both of whom are studying Veterinary Science. Two were part of the Interactive Application Video Team: Brandon Bilardello from the East Rockaway UFSD, who is studying Audio Production, and Michael Gonzalez from the Hicksville UFSD, who is studying Computer Game Design. Daren Sanchez of the Freeport UFSD, who is studying Digital Design, took first for T-Shirt Design. Emmanuella Casimir from the Freeport UFSD, who is studying Medical Assisting at Barry Tech, was named Area VI Vice President. As an officer at the national level, Emmanuella will serve as a leader, communicator, advocate and facilitator for SkillsUSA. Three Barry Tech students took second place. UFSD, a Dental student, won in the Dental category. Arlene Perez from the Baldwin UFSD, who is studying Medical Assisting, earned her standing for her performance in the Medical Assisting category. Jordan Strobing from the Oceanside UFSD, who is studying Digital Design, took second for Pin Design. There were four third place winners from Barry Tech. Two were members of the Audio/Radio Production Team: Eddy Rodriguez Jr. from the Freeport UFSD and Hector Benevides Hernandez from the Uniondale UFSD, both of whom are studying Audio Production. Liana Rosenthal from the Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD, a Culinary student, earned third place in the Culinary Arts category. Danielle Aresta from the Valley Stream CHSD, a Dental student, took third in the Dental category. Considerable effort goes into qualifying for the annual SkillsUSA competition. All Barry Tech students have a double workload, completing not only their Barry Tech assignments, but also satisfying full courses of study at their home schools. Add to
that the intensive training that it takes to earn the privilege of competing in SkillsUSA, and it becomes clear how tirelessly these students work. The competition is part of SkillsUSA’s mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders working together to prepare high school and college students to become leaders in the business world. The program helps establish industry standards for jobskill training and instills a respect for community service in its participants. The U.S. Department of Labor recognizes SkillsUSA as a “successful model of an employerdriven youth development program.”

Green & White & Golden Memories As I write these words, the Class of 2018 prepares to march onto the old Kienle Field at Lindenhurst Middle School to the familiar strains of Pomp & Circumstance. In just a few short hours, they will embark on the next chapter of their lives, as proud alumni of Lindy High, the last dozen or so years of schooling an already-fading memory. I remember it like it was yesterday. June 25th, 2000, a Saturday morning. Hundreds of folding chairs lined the old grass field, as our parents and loved ones perched on the wooden bleachers excitedly waiting for the ceremony to begin. Behind the scenes, in the locker room of the gymnasium, I paced nervously in my cap and gown, binder in hand, silently running through the words of my valedictory address. As my guidance counselor passed by, she glanced my way. “Do you need a piece of gum Jamie? You look a little green.” And green I was, as I stood on the stage a few moments later, listening to our principal introduce me as the student
whose dream job it was to become a clubhouse reporter for the New York Yankees. Big dreams indeed for a girl who had never held a job outside of a part-time assistant teaching gig at her local dance studio. But that’s what high school was for, to cultivate those lofty goals and give birth to the endless possibilities borne from a college education and our eventual entrance into the great workforce. I often wonder how many of us wound up doing anything comparable to that which we aspired to on that particular day, some 18 years ago. How many ever truly know what they want to be when they grow up? Perhaps we’re not supposed to. Much has changed in the nearly two decades that have elapsed as we spread our wings and went our respective separate ways in the search for a lifetime of fulfillment. For some, college called, degrees were earned and positions accepted at prestigious corporations. For others, the path evolved a bit differently, perhaps in settling down to start
a family and build a home, or to explore other creative outlets and passions en route to a less traditional existence. To each his or her own, as they say. Ten years later, at our first reunion gathering, we reconvened as a class, a bit older and a tad wiser; overall, though, not much seemed to have changed. Looking across the bar at the old familiar faces, it was as if no time had passed. In the blink of an eye, we were back on that field, decked out in our Bulldog green and white, the world at our fingertips. In just two short years, we will likely gather once again, this time at our 20th reunion. How will the stories have evolved? What new tales will we have to share? Will the past still seem as easily within reach as it once was? I have a feeling it will. As they say in my district ~ Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog ~ and it’s true. To the graduating Class of 2018 . . . may your memories be just as fond 18 years from now as they are today. Mine certainly are.

Award to Dr. Madeline M. Crocitto, a Professor of Management in the School of Business at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury. The Grand Lodge established the Cornaro Award in 1978 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the first doctorate awarded to Dr. Elena Lucrezia Cornaro. This award recognizes outstanding Italian American women in higher education who have made significant contributions to their profession and their community. New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) Foundation President Robert Ferrito has announced that at the Foundation Annual Scholarship Awards presentation, held at Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg, New York on June 9th, seventy one students from across New York State were awarded scholarships. Fifty-three of the seventy-one award recipients were on hand along with parents and guests, to receive their scholarships in person. Every student received a minimum of $1,200 and will be a ‘studentat large’ member for the four years they are at school. Student At-Large members do not belong to a local lodge; they belong to the NY Grand Lodge and receive all materials relative to OSIA. The total amount awarded this year was $88,700 to deserving young adults. Many of the generous scholarship donors and State Officers were also on hand for the special event. Following breakfast, students marched into the Tappan Zee High School auditorium. Mrs. Josephine Federico, District 7 Scholarship Chair, who hails from Syracuse, accompanied the students on piano as attendees sang the Italian and American National anthems. Nassau BOCES and Hofstra University Continuing Education and Hofstra Summer Camps have partnered to offer a variety of exciting, fun educational opportunities for young people in grades 6-11 this summer. Programs cover career exploration, arts, sciences, outdoor education and more. Campers (grades 6-11) can become Marine Biologists in training in the Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education program, A Field Study in Marine Biology or get involved with STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Marine Exploration Technology where teams of campers build an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Both programs allow campers to discovery
the unique habitats of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve and the Brookville Outdoor Education site. “The Nassau BOCES/ Hofstra partnership is a huge success due to the combination of stateof-the-art facilities and experienced faculty,” says Hofstra University Senior Associate Dean of Continuing Education Colleen Slattery. “The feedback from campers is terrific. With its first concert on July 12th, the Art League of Long Island is proud to present a series of Jazz performances to be held quarterly in conjunction with the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook, in the beautiful multi-level Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. Both the Art League and the Jazz Loft are not-forprofit organizations whose missions share the goal of educating and presenting to the community: in the case of the former it’s the visual arts and the latter the American musical innovation we call Jazz. The series begins with “It’s Gershwin Man” featuring Steve Salerno (pictured left on the guitar), Tom Manuel (pictured far right on the trumpet) and friends on July 12th. On view in the gallery is the exhibition “It’s all about the…LIGHT!,” juried by Karen Levitov, Director and Curator of the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University. The second in the series of performances is on October 18th, when the Mark Devine Trio will play the music of “Piano Kings”. The third in the series is on February 21st, 2019, when Vanessa Trouble, Steve Salerno and John Marshall will feature an evening of Brazilian Jazz: “Getz, Gilberto and the Bossa Nova.” The May 9th, 2019, concert will feature the Richie Iacona Trio with Mike Hall, Tom Manuel and
featuring Madeline Kole on vocals performing the Great American Songbook. This exciting new series is sponsored by Olivia and Harlan Fischer, who have sponsored a monthly concert series at the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook, NY since the Jazz Loft opened in May of 2016. Harlan Fischer said “we hope people will come out on a Thursday evening to make this series worthwhile. If it works out, we can do this for years to come. Also, the combination of wonderful music in a great location at a great price is hard to beat.” Tom Manuel, the founder and director of the Jazz Loft feels “that this is just one more way to keep Jazz alive and well on Long Island. The location and the setting are both awesome.” All the performances will begin at 7:00 p.m. The ticket prices are $20. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Raising Funds As part of its commitment to altruism, the Hicksville Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society contributed $5,000 to the Association for Children with Down’s Syndrome.
Megan Lombardo, a representative from ACDS in Plainview, visited the school to accept the donation from NJHS President Kayla Mathew, officers Fiona Smith, Julia DeTurris, Teresa Lam, and
Jason Jiang, adviser Sara Smith, and teacher June DiBello. The contribution was the culmination of fundraising efforts throughout the school year.
Celebrating Staff Hicksville Public School District’s 2018 retirees and staff members celebrating their 25th year of service were celebrated with commemorative plaques and plates at the annual Silver Anniversary and Retiree Reception prior to
the board of education’s June meeting. The ceremony, which was held at Hicksville High School, recognized the hard work and commitment of 12 retiring staff members and 10 silver anniversary honorees. At the board of
education meeting that followed, members of the district earning tenure in 2018 received district pins, and were celebrated with their family and friends in attendance.

FLAG TUTORIALS - Students at Woodland Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District celebrated Flag Day with a variety of songs and activities. They performed “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and “God Bless America,” and a student from each grade level recited a patriotic poem they composed. At their meeting on May 29th, the Bethpage Union Free School District Board of Education announced the appointment of Erin Hayes as assistant principal of JFK Middle School, effective July 1st. She will be a familiar face in the
school, having served as one of the building’s social workers for the last five years, in addition to one year at Central Boulevard Elementary School. Hayes has been an integral member of the Bethpage staff since
joining the district in October 2012. Her knowledge of the students and their families, as well as her genuine concern for the school community, will serve as valuable assets in her new position. In total, Hayes has 15 years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker. She has also served as a Dignity Act coordinator at the middle school and co-chair of the Character Education Committee. Athletics Honored Karen Wohlrab, Nassau BOCES Interscholastic Athletics, was honored at the Nassau County Section VIII Council of Administrators Todd Heimer Administrators/ Secretarial Luncheon. Karen received the Todd Heimer Service Award, which was created in recognition of outstanding
contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local level for a minimum of five years. Karen worked for Todd from 2007-2012. She was also recognized for her 10 years of service to Nassau County Section VIII of NYSPHSAA (New York Public High School Athletic Association).

Syosset High School student Eleni Fregakis has been named a 2018 winner of the Jodi Shapiro Memorial Award. Eleni was nominated by Director of PPS Mary-Lou Sapienza. According to Sapienza, “Eleni has a character like no other. She strives to make the world a better place. She is naturally caring and compassionate and has the courage and energy to take action whenever she sees a need”. In addition to being a
dedicated student, Eleni is an active member of the community, volunteering her time at the Mary Brennan Inn and Ronald McDonald House. Eleni plans to work in the field of retail fashion after graduation through the OPWDD Employee Training Program. The Jodi Shapiro scholarship awards are designed to encourage and support outstanding students who exhibit extraordinary abilities in
sports, arts, community service and extracurricular activities beyond the classroom. The Awards Committee of the Long Island Association of Special Education Administrators has established this award to recognize students who have been in a special education program for 60 percent or more of the school day, successfully met goals on his/her IEP and will meet the requirements for completion.
Special Visit Legendary lead sports anchor for NBC4, Bruce Beck, recently spoke with Syosset High School students about a career in broadcasting as part of the SYOTalks Career Speaker Series. Bruce has more than 30 years of experience in broadcasting and has
won eight NY State Emmy Awards. During his visit, Bruce had students out of their seats role playing an evening broadcast and shared his four secrets to success, inluding being prepared, asking differentiating questions,

building relationships and the importance of being a good listener. The students were very engaged and appreciative of the time Bruce spent with them, and the impression he made is sure to have a lasting effect.

Second Graders Celebrate
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson joined with second graders from Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Oyster Bay to celebrate Flag Day. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which
happened on June 14th, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. Many of the students displayed their patriotism for the occasion by dressing in an array of red, white and blue. Supervisor Saladino and Councilwoman Johnson commended the students for their
spirited participation in the program and discussed the importance of American history, being civically involved, as well as some of the many great governmental initiatives going on in the Town of Oyster Bay. Oyster Bay is home to the Summer White House of President Theodore Roosevelt.
on May 1st with a 25-day incubation and observation period. Once the seven quail eggs hatched, the students were tasked with maintaining optimal temperatures inside the brooder, in addition to providing food and water. The experience culminated on June 15th with a class trip to the Suffolk County Environmental Center at the Scully Estate in Islip. During the trip, the group hiked through a salt marsh and examined
microorganisms in the pond behind Scully Mansion before releasing the quail into their natural habitat. The interactive project gave the students an upclose look at the stages of the quail’s life cycle. They also gleaned the importance of the species’ impact on the local environment, as Northern bobwhite quail eat ticks, which were at a record high last year.

Each spring, members of the U.S. House of Representatives host the Artistic Discovery Contest to recognize the nation’s talented artists in the areas of painting,
drawing, collage, printmaking, mixed media, computer generated art and photography. The overall winner of each congressional district is invited to display his or her award-winning piece in the U.S. Capitol for one year. The district congratulates Cat, Kerriann and Lauren on this outstanding artistic accomplishment.

STEM Lab Debut Anticipated since the spring 2016, the first of three new STEM labs in the Bethpage School District debuted on June 19th with a formal public ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event was held at the first lab to be completed, at Charles Campagne Elementary School. The other two labs, at Central Boulevard and Kramer Lane, are scheduled to be finished in the near future. Held as part of the district’s monthly board meeting, Superintendent
of Schools Terrence Clark delivered opening remarks that included thanking all those who helped in the development and construction of the labs. The project was approved by the public in May 2016 with goal of completion before Clark’s retirement as superintendent. The district was able to get ready for the opening of each STEM lab by having a team of teachers attend workshops and conferences of their interest in addition to developing a
curriculum. Select fifth-graders from each elementary school were invited to the ceremony to help cut the ribbon in addition to demonstrating STEM experiments. The Bethpage High School robotics team, which claimed third place at the FIRST Robotics Competition in Detroit this past April, was also on hand to demonstrate how the advancement in STEM curriculum can benefit current and future students.

Sending Off Seniors The Meadowbrook Alternative Program in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District graduated 19 students from its senior class on June 18th. During her commencement speech, valedictorian Jordan Ladd addressed the crowd of fellow graduates, staff, board members and school administrators. “At MAP, you’re seen as a whole person,” she
said. “You figure out your strengths and your weaknesses and see what works.” Salutatorian Chazz Opperman thanked teachers and staff for not giving up on him. “Through a series of blessed mistakes, I’m somehow right here; exactly where I’m supposed to be, accepting my high school diploma,” he said. During his faculty address, teacher Zachary
Gosse spoke about the importance of experimenting in life and embracing both successes and failures. “There is no single roadmap that guides you through life,” he said. “Everyone follows their own path. And it is perfectly okay to fail, but it is the insight that you gain from your failed experiments that will once again enable you to be successful.”

Student awards and scholarships were bestowed among many of the graduates, prior to being individually called to the stage to receive their certificates of completion.
