Cancer Survivors’ Day Amid the music and their memories, about 2,000 cancer survivors from North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center and their loved ones gathered under a tent to celebrate the 8th Annual Cancer Survivors Day held outside the North ShoreLIJ Cancer Institute’s Monter Cancer Center. Ed Sweeney, of Bayside, Queens, was on hand to share his story of survival, with support from his family. Mr. Sweeney described his personal journey that began with a diagnosis of colon cancer and the surgery and medication therapy that helped him become cancer free. Noting that many of his relatives were also cancer survivors, he said triumphantly, “But we are a family of survivors. And me, I’m a survivor. It’s true… the diagnosis was like a

punch in the stomach. But I’m here.” The event’s keynote speaker was Jane Brody, best-selling author and journalist, health and fitness advocate and breast cancer survivor. In 1999, Ms. Brody was diagnosed with breast cancer and treated for the disease. “My immediate reaction was ‘At least I don’t have a fatal disease,’” she said. “My knowledge of breast cancer and cure rates told me that I had a very high chance of coming through this with flying colors.” Now 73 and eagerly looking forward to travelling through Alaska with her four grandsons, Ms. Brody urged her appreciative audience to live each day to the fullest. “I can’t stress enough the importance of hope,” she said. “It’s not about the diagnosis. It’s about how

you approach it. What really counts is what you do to make your life full.” Summing up the spirit of the day, Ms.Brody said, “To me, breast cancer was a speed bump, not a road block. Stay positive.” Among other speakers, North Shore-LIJ’s newly elected chairman, Mark Claster, spoke of the health system’s investment of more than $175 million to open and expand Cancer Institute treatment centers throughout the metropolitan area, including a $45 million expansion at the Monter Cancer Center that will nearly double its size to 80,000 square feet. Noting that the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute treats about 16,000 new patients every year, Michael Dowling, the health system’s president and chief executive officer, said

the overarching goal is to bring comprehensive care – including clinical trials -- to communitybased settings, rather than expecting patients and caregivers to drive long distances. Recognizing the important role of clinical professionals in caring for patients, Mr. Dowling presented the Cancer Institute’s annual Caregiver Award to Aine Donohue, a nurse navigator at the Cancer Institute’s Center for Head and Neck Oncology. “Aine has devoted her life to helping our patients navigate the rough waters of this disease,” he said. “Whether it’s getting questions answered, helping to make an appointment, following up with a phone call, her care and concern for our patients is unparalleled.”

Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even. Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days. You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small fire has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go. My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before

her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose. In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings). But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All

situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever. These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

The Gold Coast Arts Center is thrilled to announce that their previously reported challenge grant goal posed by the Harvey and Gloria Kaylie Foundation - which stated that if the center could raise $30,000 by June 15th, the foundation would match it - has been achieved and surpassed! The Gold Coast Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) organization that has been dedicated to promoting and supporting the arts through education, exhibition, performance and outreach on Long Island for over 20 years. The Center is concerned that their widely successful “ARTreach” program is in danger of being cut back due to budget constraints, which would affect hundreds of Long Island and New York students who currently benefit from the programming. With this fact in mind, The Kaylies, who are

philanthropists committed to education and other causes that create a strong community, decided to offer this incentive; Mr. Kaylie was quite impressed with the work that the Gold Coast Arts Center has been doing over the last 20 years in the areas of arts and education. Without a doubt, decision making, along with the negation of creative expression, starts that moment they begin their education. If we want our next generation to be successful leaders, and satisfactory people, we cannot treat them as babies, while demanding they make very advanced life choices.

Oyster Bay Music Festival From June 28th through July 6th, thirtyfive aspiring performers will gather in the village of Oyster Bay to take part in the third season of Oyster Bay Music Festival, a nine-day intensive musical immersion and concurrent free live classical music festival. Ranging in age from 11 to 24 and hailing from communities throughout Long Island and greater New York, these highlevel classically-trained musicians will spend their days coaching with expert faculty, rehearsing solo and chamber music, and taking seminars on audition preparation, performance psychology, body awareness, and performance presentation. Unlike other programs for young musicians, however, Oyster Bay Music Festival’s students spend the greater part of each day performing for the community. The festival

hosts twenty public events during the week as well as six programs at senior centers and several “pop-up” concerts in the village, including daily performances at Gulden’s Cafe, a local favorite. “Our students perform a lot, often twice a day,” says Lauren Ausubel, codirector and flutist. “This gives them unparalleled opportunity to develop their performance skills, to get comfortable in front of an audience, and to realize that, without the audience, there is no concert.” Unique to Oyster Bay Music Festival is its dedication to the art of performance and the revival of classical music as a vital part of community. “As performers and teachers we continually confront the perception that classical music performances are stuffy and inaccessible,” says co-director Pippa Borisy, pianist and director of

the Great Neck Music Conservatory. “We want to create an experience of live performance, rooted in the community of Oyster Bay, that is fun, enlightening, and full of surprises.” Classical music will appear in unexpected places over the course of the week: top among them might arguably be Oyster Bay’s famed Cruise Night on Tuesday, July 1st, where Steinway & Sons will park a concert grand in front of 20th Century Cycles for a program called “Vintage Cars, Vintage Music”; a concert titled “Classical, with Attitude” featuring musical collaborations with special guests from Eglevsky Ballet at Christ Church on July 2nd; or a favorite family event from last year called “Clarinets, Clavichords and...Cucumbers?,” a concert and “vegetable orchestra” workshop with Dale Stuckenbruck at

For more than a decade, Bethpage High School has had students participate in the Kids Philosophy Slam, an annual essay contest that allows students to write about philosophical issues. This year’s question

was “Which has a greater impact on society – truth or beauty?” More than 4,000 essays were entered from high school students around the country, and this year Bethpage High School had two national winners. Melissa Delgado

came in second place with her essay about beauty and Dan Midgette came in fourth place with his essay concerning truth. Bethpage has had more than 10 students place in the top four over the last 12 years.

At Raynham Hall Museum OBMF features French music, “Après-midi in the Salon,” on Thursday, July 3rd. An early musical celebration of Independence Day takes place at Christ Church on July 3rd with a program called “I Hear America Singing.” New this year is the Festival’s interest in the natural wonders of North Shore Long Island: music aboard the Tomahawk lobster boat at the Oyster Bay Marine Center on July 3rd at 5 p.m.; an open “Found

Sounds” Jamboree and Instrument Making Workshop at Beekman Beach at 2 p.m. on July 4th; and “Songs of the Sea,” classical music inspired by the sea nestled beside the beautiful Ida May Project on Saturday, July 5th at The Waterfront Center. The festival kicks off on June 28th at Christ Church with “Upbeat”, an Opening Festival Concert and Reception; and ends in the same location with a concert entitled “A Fitting Coda” on July 6th. All concerts are free and designed for all ages. Co-director Sarah Hoover, soprano, professor at Hofstra University and music journalist, has long recognized the need to reach out in new directions. “If classical music is going to remain a viable art form, not just in urban centers and established concert halls, all of us who perform and

teach performers must build real relationships with our audiences.” To build these connections, festival directors and students will share anecdotes and engaging “musical game shows” during concerts, and students will be coached in how to talk with audiences and write their own program notes. “What we can share are the stories about classical music – about the compositions, the composers, the time period, the people who performed or heard the music,” says Hoover. “These stories help us see how relevant and alive classical music still is today. Excelling With Science

Fourteen students from Bethpage High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage School District participated in the 2014 Nassau County Science Competition. Competing with more than 400 students from 45 schools across the county, Bethpage students

scored exceptionally well. Eighth-grader Smiti Shah came in first overall in the competition with a project titled “The Effect Of Temperature On The Acidity of Precipitation,” 12th-grader Firas Akbik placed third in the engineering category for “The Mechanical Properties And Micro-Structure Of

Bones,” eighth-grader Christine Corsaro placed first in mixed sciences for her project “Amazing Archery,” and 12th-grader Nicholas Kideris placed third in the category of environmental/earth/ planetary sciences for his work titled “The Effect Of Location On Differences In Distribution Of Light.”

First Time Champs No argument here. The high school student team from Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK defeated 45 schools in the courtroom to win this year’s Nassau County Championship in the 2014 New York State Mock Trial Tournament, announced Nassau County Bar Association President John P McEntee.

Coordinated each year by the Nassau County Bar Association, the Nassau boasts the largest team enrollment for a single county in the State in this competition, which pits high school teams against one another to argue their case before judges in courtrooms of the Supreme Court in Mineola.
