Students at Burns Avenue Elementary School are connecting with U.S. troops overseas. Back in November, in-person learners in first through fifth grade wrote letters and colored pictures of positivity and gratitude to troops in honor of Veterans Day. The letters

were mailed to Colonel Brian Mayer, who was on a year-long deployment to Ali Al Salem Air Base as a maintenance group commander in Kuwait. In May, students received a thank you note in the mail, as well as a picture of Colonel Mayer with his troops holding the cards

Free Summer Drive-In Movie Series Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce the return of drive-in movies this summer at various Town facilities in July and August. The ‘Movies by Moonlight’ series is once again limited to residents only on a first-come, firstserved basis. “Residents and families looking for a fun night need look no further than their backyards this summer at the Town is ready with a summer to remember,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“We’re thrilled to once again enjoy family-friendly films from the comfort of your own vehicles at our local parks and beaches. Join us as these pop-up movie nights and sit back, relax and enjoy the show.” Movies will play on the following Wednesday evenings beginning at dusk: July 7th – Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale, Raiders of the Lost Ark July 14th – Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing, Dolittle July 21st – Ellsworth

The Charity of the Month for June is

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers

can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and ﬁll out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to ﬁnd out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced that all Town pools will open for the season beginning on Friday, June 25th. The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. “The warm, sunny days of summer are nearly upon us and all residents may start visiting our pools daily beginning Friday, June 25th,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Town Pool memberships offer families and senior citizens access to many great amenities, including upgraded restrooms, pool deck furniture, picnic benches and sunshades.” Pool hours from Friday, June 25th through Labor Day, Monday, September

Town & Friends of the Bay to Host Terrapin Monitoring And Beach Cleanup

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently announced the Town will partner with Friends of the Bay to host a Diamondback Terrapin Monitoring and Beach Cleanup Day, on Saturday, June 26, from 9 – 11 a.m. at Centre Island Beach in Bayville (rain date: June 27). “The Town of Oyster Bay is home to a large population of Diamondback Terrapins, a small species of turtle that lives in fresh or brackish water and has distinctive diamondshaped rings covering its shell,” Councilman Hand said. “We recently

launched Team Terrapin, a joint project with Friends of The Bay, to help protect this species whose conservation status is “Near Threatened.” During this Terrapin Monitoring and Beach Cleanup Event, volunteers will be trained to identify signs of nesting terrapins and build protective cages around them. These structures keep natural predators like raccoons and fox away from the terrapins, thus contributing to their survival. Alternatively, volunteers will also have the option to participate in a beach cleanup. “A part of the Team

Terrapin Initiative, this event will give families, scouts, religious groups, and students the opportunity to do their part in working to save a “Near Threatened” species and keep litter from accumulating on our shorelines.” Councilman Hand concluded. “I thank Friends of the Bay for cosponsoring this critical event with the Town.” All those interested in participating must register in advance online at https:// w w w. f r i e n d s o f t h e b a y. org/upcoming-volunteeropportunity.html.

Hicksville Fall Athletic Season Highlights Hicksville Public Schools is recognizing a successful fall sports season, despite the challenges teams and student-athletes faced due to the pandemic. Not only were students able to participate in athletics this school year, they succeeded. The Girls Varsity Swim team finished its season undefeated, winning its conference. Four athletes — Kayla Kulier, Samantha Taggart, Melanie Unger and Jennie Zhang — qualified for counties in different events. Kulier, a seventh grader, was also named the Conference IV swimmer of the year whereas Coach Sheri Epstein was named Conference IV Coach of the Year. Additionally, the 200 Free Relay team also set a school record at the New

York State qualifiers. The Varsity Boys Volleyball Team is celebrating an outstanding season, as it was crowned champions of Nassau County Conference A2. The team finished the regular season with an undefeated record and a 24-1 record in games played. The hard work and leadership of seniors Andrew Borum, John Kiss, Justin Dyjak, Ilham Karimi and Alex Paleaz did not go unnoticed as the team made it to the county quarterfinals. On the soccer field, the Varsity Boys team was named conference champions and Nassau County finalists. Anthony Bonilla and Chris Smith were both named AllCounty. In addition, Bonilla

was named Conference Player of the Year whereas Smith was named Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Two additional athletes received an All-County Honorable Mention, with four of the team’s members being named All-Conference. The Varsity Girls Soccer Team finished the season with eight wins and also had multiple players named AllCounty, All-Classification and All-Conference. Freshman Maya Villatoro was recognized as the Conference Goalkeeper of the Year. Congratulations to all of Hicksville’s fall sports teams. The District wishes continued success for its athletes as they head into the spring season.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that the Town will partner with Island Harvest Food Bank and Car Show Long Island to host a special food drive called the “Cruise Thru Food Drop” on Saturday, June 26th (rain date of June 27th), at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. The food drive will run from 9am to 2pm and benefit our neighbors in need during this public health crisis, with the donations going to help and restock local food banks throughout Long Island. “As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to impact our fellow Long Island residents, many people are facing a great hardship at this time. The fine work of organizations like Island Harvest touch the lives of so many Long Islanders who are less fortunate, and their work has become more crucial than ever during these uncertain times,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I am proud that the Town will be partnering with Car Show Long Island to host a Cruise Thru Food Drop for

our neighbors in need, as this event will not only help provide residents with a fun outlet to give back to those in need, but also practice social distancing while helping to champion a great cause!” The Town, Island Harvest, and Car Show LI are asking residents to assist by providing the necessities to their neighbors in need of food assistance by donating

non-perishable food items and pet food at this event. Show cars and non-show cars alike are welcomed, and proper social distancing guidelines will be followed throughout the course of the event while collecting food donations. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their

2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Maier.

“We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website and brochures.” Councilwoman Maier noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the

Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but highquality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@oysterbayny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted to

the Town’s Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of the photo are included

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Preserving Plainview Starts With Your Irrigation System With irrigation systems now online and causing the community’s water demand to spike significantly, the Plainview Water District (PWD) is reminding residents of their responsibility to help Preserve Plainview through water conservation. Water usage and customer bills can triple during the summer due to irrigation systems coming online. As much of the water pumped is wasted in the process due to inefficient practices, the District is reminding all residents of the ways they can help to Preserve Plainview and help create a more sustainable water supply. “Because our sprinkler systems typically go off during the hours we are asleep, most people don’t realize how much water they are using on a daily basis,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “Our Preserve Plainview initiative aims to help our residents,

not only realize just how much water their irrigation system is consuming to keep their lawn green, but provide them with the tools and tips to accomplish the same goal while using significantly less water.” Last year, the District pumped more than 1.8 billion gallons of water to meet the needs of the 10,000 families it serves in the Plainview-Old Bethpage community. 1.1 billion gallons were pumped between May and September 2020, with most of that water being pumped between June and August. This spike of water pumpage can almost singularly be attributed to irrigation systems trying to keep up with the summer heat. This increase not only puts a strain on our region’s sole-source aquifer, but it significantly taxes the District’s supply and distribution system immensely as it tries to keep up with demand.

“It is pretty staggering when you look at the data and see how much water is being drawn from the ground to keep our lawns green,” said PWD Commissioner Amanda Field. “It is even more eye opening when you think of the massive expense this community shoulders from an infrastructure perspective just to make sure our systems have the capacity to handle this increased demand for this short period of time during the summer. Our goal with the Preserve Plainview initiative is to tell people not to water their lawns, but rather ensure they are doing so in an efficient, responsible manner.” Installing a smart controller is the single greatest way to conserve a significant amount of water while keeping lawns and gardens healthy. By connecting with local weather stations and adjusting watering

schedules based on the forecast, these systems better predict a lawn’s water needs, which is typically only an inch of water per week. Residents are also urged to follow the Nassau County Lawn Watering Ordinances, which provide optimal times to water your lawn. The ordinance states that evennumbered homes can only water on even-numbered days, while odd-numbered homes can only water on odd-numbered days. Nonnumbered homes follow the even-numbered homes schedule. It also states that no lawn watering can be done between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on any day. The District also has more tips that can help residents promote a healthier lawn and garden this summer while also cutting back on water waste: · Nassau County’s ordinance also requires rain sensors on every lawn

irrigation system. Make sure they are installed on your system and working properly. · Test your lawn irrigation system’s watering distance so that water is not hitting your house, going into the street, or beyond your property and lawn. · All hoses for exterior water use must be fitted with a hand-operated automatic-off nozzle valve. · The hosing of driveways, sidewalks, or streets is prohibited. · Reduce the amount of time you water during each irrigation zone. · Consider hiring a reputable lawn irrigation company to make sure your lawn is properly irrigated and that all of your equipment is operating efficiently. “The adoption of watersaving technology, as well as the implementation of water conservation habits, will significantly reduce your overall water

consumption,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “Even if everyone in this community contributed to our conservation efforts in the smallest way, collectively they will have an enormous impact.
