Planned Spontaneity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

United Way of Long Island is giving companies, organizations, families and friends the chance to battle for bragging rights on The Peconic River this summer by entering a four-person team in the annual Paddle Battle Long Island Team Challenge. The Paddle Battle will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the town docks in Riverhead with proceeds from the Team Challenge going to United Way of Long Island’s VetsBuild Program, as well the Long Island Aquarium. The Paddle Battle Team Challenge is a recreational Stand Up Paddle Board and Kayak race where groups will compete against each other for the coveted Paddle Battle Team Challenge trophy. Recent national tragedies are reminders that it is imperative for NYBC to always have an adequately stocked blood supply to respond when communities are faced with patient traumas or other events that require life-saving blood products. While summer months are marked by a long vacation period, with schools in recess and leisure time, the need for blood never takes a vacation. NYBC urges individuals to seek out nearby blood donation centers and to engage in the selfless act of donating, helping to prevent a summer blood shortage and potentially saving the life of someone in need.

Saluting the Flag

Students and staff at Woodland Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District commemorated Flag Day by participating in a variety of activities designed to honor the nation and learn about the American flag. Following a student-led singing of the national anthem, Principal Mary

Hance spoke about the history and significance of the flag, and what the colors red, white and blue represent. Student representatives from each of K-5 grade levels read aloud essays they had written on the topic, “Why I Love America.” Afterward, all students sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “God

Pen Pals Meet The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School recently organized an opportunity for its students in French language classes to speak with students in France via Skype and practice their skills. Madame Roehrig’s seventh and eighth grade classes spent the last year exchanging letters with

middle school pen pals in France, and now were finally able to put a face to the name. While Plainview students practiced their French skills, they were also given the opportunity to help teach their French pen pals about the English language. The activity was intended to give students a chance

to broaden their horizons by learning more about students of the same age who are living in another country. The students asked questions, such as, “How do you spend your free time?” and “What is school like in France?” which helped the students better understand the similarities and differences between the two cultures.

PEN PALS MEET - Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School students practiced their French language skills by conversing with their pen pals in France via Skype. The event offered an opportunity for students to practice listening comprehension, build fluency and cross international bridges.

The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B Mattlin Middle School recently held a ceremony to recognize 66 students who were nominated for a PRIDE award by their teachers. The ceremony honored students who demonstrated one or

more aspect(s) of PRIDE throughout the school year, which include doing their Personal best, showing Respect, demonstrating Impulse control, using Decision making skills and displaying Empathy. The students’ families were invited to attend and celebrate the students’

accomplishments among school faculty and District administrators. Several staff members spoke at the ceremony, and the school’s select choir sang the National Anthem. Nominated students received a PRIDE award certificate along with a “Mattlin hat.”

Shipping Up to Boston Students at PlainviewOld Bethpage Central School District’s PlainviewOld Bethpage Middle School had the chance to discover the many historical and scientific lessons Boston, MA has to offer. Students took in the culture while touring some of Boston’s oldest neighborhoods and visiting some of its many museums. The trip also included trying local cuisine including New

England clam chowder, eating at the Hard Rock Café and participating in a gameshow/dance party. During the trip, students followed Boston’s Freedom Trail, stopping at Paul Revere’s House, exploring the historic North End, Faneuil Hall and the State House before eating in famous Quincy Market. Students also observed sea lions, seals, sea turtles and hundreds of other fish at the New England Aquarium, explored the

nautical side of Boston on a Duck Tour and visited the Boston Museum of Science. The trip was coordinated by teacher Ms. Ali Glassman and chaperoned by teachers Ms. Agunzo, Ms. Boddy, Ms. Bowden, Ms. Charletta, Ms. Coakley, Ms. A. Gentile, Ms. J. Nearly 50 teens showed up on Saturday evening to walk the red carpet into a star-studded Prom night at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Every teen looks forward to the momentous occasion of prom night, but for kids who struggle with chronic or terminal illnesses, this event served as the opportunity to act like every other teen - to party with peers, dance the night away and experience this important milestone. It was also the chance

to, for one night, forget about all of their medical challenges. “The Children’s Hospital Prom afforded us, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and our colleagues in Stony Brook Medicine, the opportunity to give back to the kids who needed us at some of the worst times in their life,” said Ellen Miller, Associate Director of Operations, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “It’s important for us to be able to invite them back to the hospital campus for a joyful celebratory event, ensure that they feel special, and let them loose with others who can relate to some of their most challenging life

experiences.” Starting in the afternoon, some patients arrived to the hospital - or were escorted from their rooms - to begin their day of pampering. Professional hair, makeup and nail service, provided by New York Institute of Beauty and WAVES Salon, helped to make this event everything that a traditional prom night would be. Formal wear, which was donated by the Temple Beth Torah’s Chavurah Group, was provided to ensure that every teen shined in style. Under a huge white tent donned with lights, provided by Camelot Party Rentals, the tables were set, photo booths were in place, the food - courtesy of Stony Brook Medicine Catering, was elegantly displayed. The DJ, Glen Santoro with GNA Entertainment, had the kids up and dancing as soon as they walked in. “The smiles that we witnessed on Saturday

Picking Up the Pace Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s H. B. Mattlin Middle School recently organized an opportunity for students in science and math classes to see physics in action by participating in a special lab workshop that measured speed and pace.

Students tested how long it took them to walk, hop and run backwards for six to 12 meters. They then applied the formula for velocity, which they learned in their classes - speed equals distance divided by time - to draw conclusions regarding pace

in meters per second when walking longer distances. The lesson aligned with the students’ science and math curriculums, spanning different disciplines and working with proportions.

One Town, One Book Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia reminds residents that the ‘One Town, One Book: Oyster Bay Reads’ program is underway in the Town of Oyster Bay. Residents of all ages are invited to participate, with this year’s program theme of “Sports and Recreation: Making Reading Your Favorite Sport.” “This national program seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss reactions with friends and families and has been a summertime fixture in the Town for a few years,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “The Town continues to sponsor One Town, One Book, with two clear goals in mind: to promote literacy, and to create a greater sense of community within our Town.” The Councilwoman noted that this year’s celebration, which invites residents of all ages to read tales based on their favorite sport, includes a poster and essay contest for interested participants. “To further encourage the creativity of our residents, Oyster Bay Reads

will once again feature an essay and poster contest through local libraries,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Anyone interested in participating is invited to create a poster based on their favorite sports themed book. Posters may be submitted to your local library. Talent for Troops Hicksville Public School District hosted its second annual Talent for Troops program at Hicksville High School, and raised more than $9,100 for Fisher House Foundation and Nassau County Firefighter’s Operation Wounded Warrior group.

The Talent for Troops program featured staff members throughout the district entertaining their colleagues through song, dance and poetry and veterans shared their stories of service in between the acts. Talent for Troops served

as an entertaining way for the district to raise funds for troops who have been wounded while courageously serving their country, as well as a forum for students and staff to applaud the heroes’ extraordinary efforts.

Syosset High School juniors Rachel Lo and Rikki Weiss are winners of the 2016 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing. Rachel and Rikki were recognized for “superior

writing” based on their themed writing samples that explored the conflict between nurturing passions and meeting obligations. The NCTE competition was established in 1957 to encourage high school

students in their writing and to publicly recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. All entries were evaluated by national judges on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development and style.

District Honorees Students and staff throughout Hicksville Public School District’s seven elementary schools were honored by the board of education during a special recognition ceremony held at Hicksville High School. The program featured a slate of performances by the Hicksville Middle School eighth-grade chorus under the leadership of director Justin Starr,

professor at Stony Brook University, where she was the youngest researcher on a team of graduate students. She was also a National Merit Finalist, won a gold medal for her performance on the National Spanish exam and placed second in this year’s Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. Anna has taken on a number of leadership roles, including vice president of the Science Honor Society and secretary for the Science Olympiads. She also has served as chair for the school’s Model United Nations (METMUNC) club, where she participated in conferences aimed at discussing and dissecting global issues. Anna was also an editor for the school’s newspaper, focusing her articles on language skills. Outside of the classroom, Anna is a figure skater and a black belt in karate. Her volunteer work includes working with Kids Versus Cancer, advocating for legislation to allow pediatric cancer drug trials.

Students from Baldwin High School’s Art Honor Society took on a heartfelt assignment this past semester painting ‘calming’ murals for Long Island Jewish Valley Stream’s hospice. The murals were presented during a ceremony held recently at the hospital. “I think it was important because we were doing it for people who needed it. So it felt extra good, we did it with a lot of love,” said Kira Genovese, who contributed her painting ‘Shakespeare on the Beach.’ While the teens were recognized for their artistic contribution to the hospital, their empathy was also noted by community members and hospital staff. “These students have a lot of compassion,” said

Tywanna JamesRouse, nurse manager for the hospice unit. “Some adults don’t even know what compassion means. So for them to know what it means and to translate it into art is a very special thing.” It was more than just a painting lesson for the students; some could identify closely with what hospice means. “It was really important and personal for me,” said Sage Fortune, whose painting is entitled; ‘Cherry Blossoms.’ “My grandmother was in my house before she was in hospice so I know what it’s like to be around people who are going through a really rough time. Everyone reacts to it differently and I just kind of thought of my grandma.”

The murals will be displayed in the hospice unit permanently. They’ll exist as a tangible reminder of the teens who painted them for the patients. “We tried our hardest to paint really good pictures. I think the people will really be happy with what we painted for them,” said Cameron Green, whose painting is entitled ‘Wonderland.’ Steve Bello, the hospital’s executive director, said the hospital and school have a longstanding relationship. “It’s a culmination of several years of collaboration that we’ve had with Baldwin Schools. I think it’s a nice lasting legacy representing that collaboration and something we’ll look to expand upon in the future.”
