Scholarships Awarded Nassau BOCES Barry Tech recently awarded a total of $12,000 in scholarship funds to more than 40 students, who earned the monetary awards through their exemplary efforts both in and out of the classroom. The young scholars received their awards at the 2017 Barry Tech Scholarship Luncheon, held at the Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center. Culinary Arts student Sofia Gutierrez of the Hempstead UFSD was honored with the $4,000 Cristin Ann Bambino Memorial Scholarship from the New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal. Auto Collision student William Farkash of the Seaford UFSD earned a $2,500 achievement award from the Franklin Charitable Giving Program. Barry Tech Digital Design student Kevin

Edwards of the East Meadow UFSD earned a $500 award from the Long Island Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators. Medical Assisting students Juan Betancur from the Freeport UFSD, and Jamora Reynolds and Sashane Samuels from the Westbury UFSD, each received $250 from Long Island Blood Services. Two students earned the $125 SkillsUSA Scholarship for their performances at the regional and state competitions and for their service to the organization. Digital Design student Melissa Guillen from the Hempstead UFSD took first place for Pin Design in the 2017 national competition; Samantha Miller from the East Meadow UFSD took first-place in the Actions Skills category. A total of $4,250 was given to the winners of the Barry Tech Career

and Technical Education Achievement Award. Thirty-four students earned $125 each for their exceptional performance in their chosen fields of study, active participation in school activities and community service, and service to their peers as positive role models. A complete list of these award winners, including their home school districts and chosen fields of study, follows. “These students have gone above and beyond their academics to demonstrate a genuine passion and commitment to their fields,” said Barry Tech Principal Peter Dalton. “Part of the Nassau BOCES mission is to enable students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These scholarships help us to do just that, by providing them with financial, as well as educational, support.”

More than 150 Long Island community members and people with disabilities recently supported ACLD Foundation and the over 3,000 people that Bethpageheadquartered Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) serves each year by participating in ACLD Foundation’s Second Annual Walk/Run: Journey To An Enviable Life at Heckscher State Park in East Islip, where the event raised more than $31,000 benefiting ACLD programs and services. The activities kicked-off with opening remarks from ACLD Executive Director Robert C. Goldsmith, followed by a prerun stretch and warm-up led by HOPEFitness, a fitness and sports training center that provides classes and fitness programs for participants who

are physically or intellectually challenged. The event included a 5K Walk/Run and a 1K Fun Run. Both non-competitive, untimed events were held on ﬂat, paved courses so adults and children of all ages had the opportunity to take part, along with participants in wheelchairs. T-shirts and refreshments were provided and Cox Media’s WBAB provided on-site music as the event’s Media Sponsor. The Walk/Run benefited ACLD, a leading non-profit organization whose mission is to provide children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities with opportunities to pursue enviable lives, increase independence and foster supportive relationships within the community.

“Our Second Annual Walk/ Run was a great success,” said Robert C. Goldsmith. “The smiles on participants’ faces were priceless. So many people came together to support our mission – the pursuit of an enviable life for the people we serve. We thank our generous event sponsor Pilot RB, as well as our parking sponsor, Bethpage

Federal Credit Union, and the volunteers who helped make this such a meaningful and memorable day.” ACLD collected used and unwanted clothing during the Walk/Run for donation to RewearAble, the agency’s green program designed to help the environment while providing sustainable employment for adults with learning and developmental disabilities. Bethpage Student Earns Award Peter Ingenito of the Bethpage UFSD, a Video Production and Digital Filmmaking student at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, earned a $125 Barry Tech Career and Technical Education Achievement Award. The young scholar received his award at the 2017 Barry Tech Scholarship Luncheon, held at the Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center. Peter took the top spots at no less than three Long Island film festivals this year for his

documentary “Behind The Glasses,” a courageous, autobiographical film about living with Asperger Syndrome. He earned First Place in the Locust Valley Film Festival, and Best in Show at both the Long Island Media Arts Show and First Exposure Film Festival. His film will also be featured at the Long Island International Film Expo next month. “Peter has gone above and beyond his academics to demonstrate a genuine passion and commitment to his field,” said Barry

Film Fest Creations Students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts Filmmaking Program got the chance to showcase their original productions recently at the school’s annual Film Festival. Family, faculty and fellow students applauded at the diverse and imaginative films, written, produced and acted by the students. Featured were “Cassandra Jones,” by Anna Manae Romano, Half Hollow Hills CSD; “At the Table,” by Brandyn Royere, Locust Valley CSD; “As Good as it Gets,” by Matthew Verni, Locust Valley CSD; “King,” by Joshua Levenstein, Roslyn UFSD; and “Jellyfish,” by Emily Schaubeck, Garden City UFSD. The evening ended with an entertaining, informative

and sometimes humorous behind-the-scenes look in “Memory Montage,” depicting the process and trials of filming scenes in and around the school. The students held a questionand-answer period after the film presentation. “Our annual film festival was a great success, but I view it as only the tip of the iceberg,” said LIHSA instructor Anthony Petrucci. “I don’t focus our year on this one night; I focus on the process of individual evolution in each student, which will continue long after they graduate. Petrucci went on to say that he’s very proud of his students in that they’ve accepted his challenge to fulfill multiple complex artistic disciplines, and they’ve done so with

complete originality through every step of the filmmaking process. “This is unique at the high school level,” Petrucci said. “That is, they each write their own screenplay from scratch, transform the screenplay into shooting instructions and design elements, cast their roles, direct their actors and crew, operate the camera as their own cinematographer and edit the footage into something impactful and lasting. It’s a deeply difficult art form that requires intellectual and emotional stamina along with great imagination and willingness to take creative risks. My students, I think, have shown tonight that they are far along in their evolution.”

Organization Dissolves At its May 19th, Convention, a motion was made and approved to dissolve the Long Island Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc. (LIFWC) after 124 years. Since its founding in 1895, the LIFWC has always taken pride and dignity in serving the women’s clubs and

students of Long Island, including the awarding of hundreds of educational gifts totaling thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, it has become apparent in recent years that its programs and activities have become incorporated into the workings of individual

The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) will host its 32nd annual Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, July 10th, at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club, and is honored to have Guy DelGrande, the CEO of Tekmark Global Solutions LLC as their Man of the Year. This golf outing, the biggest fundraising event of the year, benefits the Foundation’s mission of granting special wishes to children between the ages of 3 to 17 who have been diagnosed with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses. Honors for Young Architects The Syosset High School Technology Education Department recently hosted its annual Architectural Showcase, which provides students enrolled in two architectural courses with an opportunity to take pride in their designs while receiving input and recognition from industry professionals. Forty-three Residential Architecture and Commercial Architecture students participated in this year’s showcase, now in its 29th year. Student built ¼ inch scale

models of various structures, including dream homes, commercial sites and public structures. The structures were compiled to create a village scene in the school commons area as families and friends were invited for the viewing. Professional architects also volunteered to share their insights with the student-designers, as well as nominate the best pieces for the Gold Compass Award. Two of the judges were Syosset alumni: Noah Adler and Patricia Tiglias.

This year, five Gold Compass Award winners were named. Sophomores Robert Kula, Mirwais Noory and Daneida Segovia from the Residential Architecture course and juniors Jake Leonardi and Jared Ryback from the Commercial Architecture course were honored. Mike Ferreira, Tom Morritt and Paul Rorke teach the residential course; Morritt teaches the Commercial course.

One Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

not enough; are my arms graceful, my hands “jazzy”… Of course, there is also that other scenario, that one that plays out in your subconscious the night before – the one where all the carefully rehearsed choreography evaporates from your memory at the most inopportune moment; generally when you happen to be front and center, spotlight squarely on you, smile frozen as you desperately try to ad lib something, anything. I would say I’ve had my share of each extreme through the years. It began with my very first recital at the tender age of six when I ﬂew onstage mid-song, arms ﬂailing, as I tried to catch up with my classmates as

As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. Meteor Mike First-grade classes at Robbins Lane Elementary School in Syosset welcomed News 12 meteorologist Michael Rizzo to the school library for a fun, handson demonstration on how different weather events occur. Also known as “Meteor Mike,” Rizzo conducted

engaging experiments to simulate how tornados develop using attached two-liter bottles and how snow forms water. He even brought some funs instruments to illustrate different weather, including a plasma light globe to show students the atmospheric phenomenon that causes lightening

and a hand-held device that creates wind gusts. Meteor Mike also reviewed some important tips on how to react to potentially dangerous weather situations, including “when thunder roars, stay indoors.” Robbins Lane teacher Laura Perfetti arranged the visit.

Washington Post Rank The Washington Post is the latest national news outlet to recognize Syosset High School as one of the finest schools in the country. Less than a month after U.S. News & World Report ranked the school No. 24 in New York State and 173 in the country, The Washington Post has named Syosset High School No. 200 on its list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools. Schools are ranked through an index formula of the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. Public schools

that achieved a ratio of at least 1.00, meaning they had as many tests in 2016 as they had graduates, were put on the national list. Schools are ranked in order of that ratio. The Washington’s Post’s rationale for not counting passing rates is that some high schools tend to keep rates artificially high by allowing only their top students to take the courses. This formula factors in average students who take on the challenge of heavy college reading lists and long, analytical college examinations. According to the Post, research has found that even low-performing students who got a 2 on an AP test did significantly better in college than

similar students who did not take AP. In addition to U.S. News & World Report and the Washington Post, the website Niche.com ranked the Syosset Central School District No. 16 in the country and No. 5 among the state’s best school districts for the current year. Niche.com, a ranking and review website for K-12 schools, colleges and neighborhoods, factored in Syosset’s academics, administrative leadership, college readiness, clubs and activities, diversity, food, attention to health and safety, resources and facilities for students, sports programs and quality of teaching.

Students in Erin Austin’s first-grade class at Central Boulevard School in the Bethpage School District participated in a citizen science project to help the environment. Working with the Seatuck Environment Association’s Quail program, the

class hatched Northern Bobwhite Quail, which are a native species to the area. Once released into the wild, the Northern Bobwhite Quail will eat ticks, which are at a record high this year. The experience reinforced the stages of the

SPIRIT OF AMERICA - In honor of Flag Day, kindergarten through second-grade students at Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District were treated to a patriotic and interactive program.
