MUSIC FACILITATES GROWTH Help Hope & Smiles Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to helping children with autism, recently teamed up with Diana’s Music Lessons, a private inhome music lesson and instrument rental company, to put on a free Autism-Friendly Parent and Child Music Workshop. The event ran for 75 minutes at the Seaford Public Library on June 2nd. Children ages 4-8 attended with a guardian to not only enjoy all that was offered, but to learn and grow through the wonders of music. The event was split into three segments: a drum circle, which helped children learn, retain and create drumming patterns; a keyboard lesson, which allowed the children to match color-coded keyboard keys to color-coded sheet music so they could easily learn simple songs; and, lastly, a creative music-based craft, which allowed these children to create and decorate their own percussion instruments. Each child has his or her own strengths, and this event helped showcase that. This won’t be the last free event that Help Hope & Smiles puts on. I’m very proud to have been a part of their development as sixthgraders transitioning into a new school and guiding them onto the next chapter in their lives. Working with adolescents has kept me young at heart.” In addition to continuing his work mentoring young administrators, Kassebaum looks forward to spending new-found time on some of the things he enjoys, including boating, hiking, and baseball umpiring, and perhaps a trip to a seat at the top of the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Boston, while also tending to projects around the house. Town Pools to Open S u p e r v i s o r Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced that all Town pools will open for the season beginning on Saturday, June 23rd. Residents looking to get a jumpstart on summer by pre-registering for Town pool passes may visit all facilities at the times listed below. “The warm, sunny days of summer are just nearly upon us and all residents may start visiting our pools daily beginning Saturday, June 23rd,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This year we have many great amenities for our residents, including new pool deck furniture, picnic benches and sunshades. Additionally, last summer we promised our residents that we would unveil new and improved restroom facilities for the 2018 season, and we have delivered on that promise.” The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie

Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. Pool hours from June 23rd through September 3rd will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Extended hours, until 8 p.m., will be offered as follows (weather permitting): • Monday: SyossetWoodbury • Tuesday: Plainview-Old Bethpage • Wednesday: Bethpage • Thursday: Marjorie R. Post • Fridays: ALL pools open late including Tappen Pre-registration is available daily and is held from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays at community park pools and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Tappen Pool. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, pre-registration

is available from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at all facilities. Registration will take place during regular hours of operation once pools open daily. “In addition to the great new amenities at our facilities, the Town is offering swimming lessons at local pools to members age five and older,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Pool members ages 6-16 may join a swim team, which provides the opportunity to compete against other Nassau County Municipal Swim Conference teams.” Residents interested in registering must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number required. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years of age and under. Town pools will be open daily from June 23rd through Labor Day Monday, September 3rd. Congratulations to Harry B. Thompson Middle School Principal James Kassebaum, who was recently named Administrator of the Year by the Empire State Supervisors & Administrators Association’s Region 1– Council of Administrators and Supervisors. Region 1 is comprised of public school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and CAS is represented by more than 1,500 public school administrators. Kassebaum, who is completing his 41st year in education, has served the students at H.B. Thompson for 24 years, the last 16 as principal. He announced his retirement earlier this spring. “Under your stewardship, Thompson Middle School has achieved and maintained a well-deserved reputation as one of New York State’s highest-performing middle schools,” wrote CAS President Albert Voorneveld in his letter to Kassebaum, who noted his career involvement as

a leader among Syosset principals and his active leadership roles with CAS and ESSAA, as well as with the Nassau County Middle Level Principals’ Association. “I appreciate the recognition and am very humbled by this,” said Kassebaum, who plans to continue working with aspiring administrators. “There are many less experienced educators who are advancing in their careers and moving into administrator roles, and the challenges new administrators face have changed and increased through the years.” “Jim Kassebaum has worked tirelessly for the students of Syosset as both assistant principal and principal for the last 24 years,” said HBT Assistant Principal Kevin Bonnano, who has worked with Kassebaum as an administrative assistant and assistant principal for 12 years. “He has dedicated himself to leading a program that provides students with the best academic, social and emotional learning opportunities. He’s guided his staff through many changes in the educational landscape, always with the goal of making sure each student had an opportunity to reach their potential. We’ll all miss Jim’s passion and dedication.” Looking back on his years at HBT, Kassebaum takes great satisfaction from the growth of his staff through the years. “Our staff has always had that day-to-day energy and work

It was in 2003 that Mr. Valvo realized that something was wrong. In his late forties at the time, he was just shy of the recommended age of 50 to begin colorectal cancer screening. However, Mr. Valvo said he listened to his body and insisted on having a colonoscopy, a decision that may have saved his life. His doctors found a large tumor inside his colon, and Mr. Valvo underwent surgery. Now a well-known advocate for colon cancer awareness and funding for research, Mr. Valvo credits journalist Katie Couric, former co-host

They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. Everyone possesses their own unique worth and individuality, and MHAW does a great job providing treatment and services that focus on goals and aspirations specific to each individual person. Scholastic Gold Medalist The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers awarded South Woods Middle School student Sabrina Guo a gold medal for her poetry collection “Through my Window,” placing her in the top 1 percent of the nearly 350,000 works of art submitted. After receiving a Gold Key in the regional competition, her work was judged at the national level by a panel of creative industry experts and

recognized to be among the most outstanding works in the nation. Sabrina will be honored the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in June. Sabrina’s work has also been honored by the NYS PTA through the “Within Reach” Reflections contest. Sabrina’s entry titled “Joyous Ensemble” earned her an Award of Merit and will be included is an exhibit this fall at the NYS

PTA convention. Sabrina is a published author, blogger and book reviewer, with her work published in both “Stone Soup” and “Bazoof!” magazines. In addition to her gift for writing, Sabrina is a talented musician and represented South Woods Middle School as the overall 2nd chair in Violin 1 in the Long Island String Festival Association.

The Hicksville Public School District Board of Education celebrated outstanding members of its elementary schools’ communities in a special Elementary Student and Staff Recognition Ceremony held at Hicksville High School. The program began with

a musical performance by chorus students from East Street Elementary School under the direction of Joanna Rocco. Superintendent for Personnel Rosemarie Coletti then presented certificates to staff members celebrating milestone numbers of

years of distinguished service to the district. The staff recognition was followed by a certificate presentation to students by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso, building principals, teachers and department supervisors.

Translating These Principles to Your Everyday Life Customer: Never forget that you are the customer, and if not treated with the respect that you deserve, you should stop dealing with them. Start buying with a firm that greatly appreciates your business. Product: In this case, you are the product. If you are in the job market, don’t forget that (as in business) you are competing with other prospects. So, what factors make you stand out from all the rest? Even in purely social situations, do you make friends easily and keep them for a long time? (I call that a friendship index.) Price: Back to the job market: What are your salary requirements in relation to the position being offered? Are you sure that it’s realistic? If not, can you accept a lesser amount? In effect, what are you really worth? Promotion: How are you promoting yourself? Are you making the best appearance possible with neatly pressed and presentable clothing? What about your resume - has it been prepared by a professional writer? Place: Is the position being offered in reasonable proximity to your house or

apartment? If not, do you have alternate ways to get there? Uncontrollable Variables: Think hard on this one. To the best of your knowledge, is there anything in your world that could get in the way of your planned progress? If so, is there any way around this potential obstacle? Summary: You have learned about the Marketing Mix, the tool that most companies use to actively compete in the market. We have translated those principles into your world and outlined how you might use these to get ahead in the world of business and your personal life. To gain the most of this exercise, think carefully about each principle and how it applies to you. Before you draw any conclusions, make certain that you are being 100% honest with your answers (even subconsciously). Going forward, you’ll be glad that you did. Cancer Survivor Day He continues to promote awareness through his work as a board member of the Colon Cancer Alliance and has given generously of his time to raise money for colorectal research. Clearly emotional, Mr. Valvo looked out at the hundreds of cheering people in his audience and told them, “The one thing that cancer taught me to do is to celebrate every day. Life is joyous…we all need to remember this.” Another cancer survivor, pediatrician Anila Thomas, MD, was in her last year of medical school at age 25, when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2011. Following a two-year treatment regimen of spinal taps, infusions and bone marrow biopsies recommended by Northwell Cancer Institute oncologist Jonathan Kolitz, MD, Dr. Thomas was declared cancerfree in 2014. In what she describes “as nothing short of a miracle,” she finished medical school in 2013, and completed her pediatric residency at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in 2017. “And, to top it off, “said Dr. Thomas, “and probably best of all - my daughter, Abigail Sarah Thomas, was born on October 25, 2017. So, take ownership of your survivorship,” she said. “We need to bring hope and encouragement to everyone who has shared this experience.” Richard Barakat MD, physician-in-chief and director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, who joined the health system in April after many years at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan, said he was struck by the energy and the passion of survivors, loved ones and staff. “Our overarching goal is to standardize cancer care across Northwell Health – from Westchester, Manhattan,

Staten Island and Long Island – so no matter where you get treatment, you’ll receive the same level of high-quality care,” he said, noting that a major priority will be on expanding cuttingedge clinical trials for our patients, including the launch of Phase 1 clinical trials through Northwell’s Center for Cancer Therapeutics at Monter. “We are also working closely with our colleagues at the world-renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Through this unique collaboration created three years ago, we’re bringing innovative research from the lab and giving our patients access to novel, early-stage clinical trials.” Summing up the spirit of the day was Caroline Monti Saladino, who continues the legacy of her late parents, Tita and Joe Monti, as president of the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation. Looking out at the audience, she asked simply, “Are you all happy to be here today?” Responding to enthusiastic applause, she added, “Well, so am I. This is my family’s reward, and what makes our work at the Foundation so joyful. As I do every year, I wish that all your days be filled with health, happiness and most important - life.”

On June 13th, the Hicksville School District Board of Education unanimously appointed Marianne Litzman as superintendent of schools, effective July 1st, 2018. Mrs. Litzman will be replacing retiring superintendent Dr. Carl Bonuso. “After conducting an extensive and thorough search and interviewing several highly qualified candidates, it was evident that Marianne Litzman possesses the vision and leadership skills we are looking for to lead our school district to the next level of success,” said Board of Education President Phil Heckler. “Her familiarity with our students, staff and community will ensure a smooth transition at a critical juncture in our district, specifically the concurrent appointment

of three new elementary school principals and the implementation of the Next Generation Learning Standards recently adopted by the NYS Education Department.” Mrs. Litzman brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new position. This year, she was selected as a recipient of the Nassau BOCES 2018 Education Partner Award for her outstanding contributions to public education in Nasssau County. She began her service to the district as a science teacher and science coordinator, then as continuing education director, principal of the district’s evening high school, assistant principal of Hicksville Middle School, principal of Dutch Lane Elementary

School and, currently, as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “I am honored and grateful for this opportunity to lead Hicksville Public Schools as superintendent,” said Mrs. Litzman. “Throughout my career in the district, it has been my privilege to collaborate with a dedicated staff and the supportive Hicksville community in working to meet the educational needs of all our students. I look forward to continuing to strengthen the homeschool connection in order for our district to shine brightly throughout the future. Kindergartners at Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District learned about injury prevention and treatment during a Teddy Bear Clinic led by nurses from NYU Winthrop

with assistance by nursing students from Adelphi University. As part of the program, students brought in a teddy bear or stuffed animal and played the roles of doctors and nurses as they treated

them for their injuries. They learned about the importance of safety, medical care and taking precautionary measures to prevent injury.

Robot Test Drive Seniors in Bethpage High School’s engineering class put their robots to the test on June 1st with an underwater submersion challenge in the school’s pool. Grouped in teams of three, the students were given motors, propellers and a camera to manufacture an underwater robot that could pick up and retrieve objects from the pool floor. The teams were also

allowed to use tape, Velcro and polyvinyl chloride piping, based on buoyancy calculations, in their designs. The project was one that engaged engineering practices modeled after real-world challenges. To execute the successful design and build of their robots, the teams had to employ a high level of collaboration and communication skills, along with physics and

math concepts. Drivers were only allowed to view their robots on a monitor during the competition to mimic real conditions researchers face when working deep below the ocean’s surface. Two groups emerged victorious from the challenge, as the robots Bubba, made by Ingy Inc., and Beta, created by Wellbound Inc., tied for scoring the most points in the course.

Despite his knack for science research, Daniel’s true passion lies within the numbers as he intends to advance his studies in a mathematics-related field at the postsecondary level. He has been a member of Matheletes since 2010 and currently serves as vice president. In the last two years he has won a Silver Certificate in the Nassau County Interscholastic Math League and a Silver Medal at the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair. Silver also shone on Daniel in the form of a medal upon his completion of the Le Grand Concours National French Exam. Daniel’s leadership experience includes his current service as president of the high school Quiz Bowl and Web Development and Bridge clubs. He is also the vice president of the Programming Club, in addition to the VP of Mathletes. Syosset High School is proud to announce that Jarrad Li is the Class of 2018 valedictorian and Daniel Israel is the salutatorian. Both have made academic honor roll every quarter since they were both freshmen in 2014. “Jarrad and Daniel are two exceptional students who we have already heard so much about,” said Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante. “In addition to being at the top of their class, they are very involved in their respective extracurricular activities, particularly in the areas of math and science. Both have received numerous accolades to date and I’m sure there will be more great things to come from both of them. I wish them continued success in the future.” Science research is a major area of study for Jarrad academically, having medaled in Science Olympiads 34 times since 2015, with several first- and second-place awards. He is a 2017 Siemens Semifinalist and was awarded third-place at the 2018 Long Island Science and Engineering Fair for his research on materials science/ nanoscience and chemical engineering. He won second place at LISEF last year for his biomedical research project. Jarrad is also a recipient of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Honors Award, a discipline of science he intends to pursue in his postsecondary career. Jarrad has also won numerous awards in various mathematics competitions, including first-place in the 2017 Nassau Math Tournament as well as securing a spot on the Nassau Mathematics All-Star team the last two years. He is also a fivetime medalist on the Le Grand Concours National French exam. Music is also a big part of Jarrad’s life. He excels at both piano and clarinet, having achieved perfect New York State School Music Association scores on exams for both instruments. He has also won many prestigious honors for piano, including gold in the International Music and Arts Society’s Young Artists Music and Arts Competition. In ninth grade he was concertmaster and first chair, first clarinet. As a leader, Jarrad serves as president and co-founder

This year, twelve exceptional Nassau BOCES students earned the agency’s prestigious George Farber Outstanding Student Award. These students have demonstrated a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. The students were honored during the eleventh annual awards celebration at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. “These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” said District Superintendent Dr. Robert Dillon. “Each of them embodies the true spirit of George Farber. They have shown kindness to other students, exhibited an excellent work ethic and demonstrated outstanding commitment. They have eagerly shared their knowledge and made contributions to their communities. Their collective stories are an inspiration to us all.” For the past eleven years,

PCLI Awards Presented The Press Club of Long Island hosted its annual journalism awards at a dinner at Woodbury Country Club on Thursday, June 7th. The latest inductees in the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame and winner of the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award were honored at the dinner. The highest individual honor bestowed by the press club is induction to the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees were Harvey Aronson, Brian Donovan and Carol Pack. Aronson was a writer, editor and writing coach at Newsday for more than 40 years. Today he is a lecturer at Stony Brook University. Donovan was a longtime investigative reporter at Newsday who has won numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. Pack is being inducted into the PCLI Contributor’s Wing of the Hall for her work

with PCLI and the Society of Professional Journalists. She is a former PCLI president. The PCLI board chose Newsday for the largemarket Robert W. Greene Public Service Award for an unprecedented database investigation led by reporter Matt Clark, who analyzed more than 60 million rows of data, including 2.5 million tax bills, to reveal deep and discriminatory flaws in the dramatic overhaul of Nassau County’s tax assessment system. This year marks the debut of a small-market Robert W. Greene Public Service Award. The Long Beach Herald was selected for its multi-part series chronicling the city five years after Superstorm Sandy. The Independent/East Hampton Media Group was named best community weekly newspaper by the PCLI board, while Port Washington Magazine was

selected as best magazine. The Delphian, the student paper at Adelphi University, was recognized as this year’s best college newspaper, and The Red & Black, the student online paper at PatchogueMedford High School, is the winner of best high school media outlet. Zach Gottehrer-Cohen, a journalist with Long Island Herald Newspapers, is this year’s James Murphy Cub Reporter of the Year. This year’s PCLI outstanding college Journalist is Erika Peters from Suffolk County Community College, while the Hank Logeman/News 12 High School Journalism Scholarship recipient is Zoe Malin of North Shore High School. Joe Catalano was presented with the Phil Spahn Memorial Award for his volunteer work with the club, especially his dedication in directing the club’s annual holiday show for many years.

Volunteer Training Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to apply and train to become volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Training will be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, starting Tuesday, September 11th. “We have nearly 100 trained volunteers,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the program. Rutter says that volunteers help the organization in many different ways. “Some speak in the community about their personal experiences, others help by doing fundraising, community outreach, office work, educational presentations, or respond to callers throughout New York State on our hotline,” she says. Because the hotline volunteers have had breast cancer, it helps them to understand what it is like

to receive a breast cancer diagnosis and the needed treatment that will follow. “When our volunteers answer a hotline call the caller knows that the person they are speaking to has walked in their shoes and understands what they are going through,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the coordinator of volunteers. Ms. Rubenstein saysit is also reassuring for the caller to know that not only has the volunteer survived her diagnosis and treatment, she is now doing so well that she is volunteering to help others. Volunteers are required to take in-depth training, which includes breast education, development of important skills, such as active listening, community outreach and knowledge of community resources. The volunteers

also have continuing education throughout the year. The next volunteer training is scheduled for three consecutive Tuesdays, September 11th, 18th and 25th. Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

Students were honored as Junior Volunteers of the Year by the Levittown Community Council recently. First place winner was Eunice Lee of Wantagh, who attends Salk Middle School. Runners up were Ritika Patel of Levittown, who attends Wisdom Lane Middle School and Erin Fietz of Bethpage, who attends Island Trees Memorial Middle School. Lee was cited for her work with Civil Air Patrol, National Junior Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society and her church. She has participated in the Vietnam Medal Ceremony, in Charity Pink Out to raise money for breast cancer, in the food pantry at her church and at the VA Medical Center where she has performed on the cello with her brother for the veterans. Her goal is to attend the United States Air Force Academy and pursue a career in the medical field. Her teacher, Mr. Martin, says, “Eunice is a bright, empathetic and determined young leader.” Patel has served as a

docent for the Counting By 7s event, as a library helper, as a server at the Kiwanis pancake breakfast and at the LEADD Fair. She has helped out with the school food drive by baking and collecting food donations with the Key Club at King Kullen. Moved by a video she saw on starving polar bears, she has helped raise funds for wildlife conservation with the Polar Bears Club. Teacher, Deborah Blum, wrote, “She is an Honors student who is kind to everyone.” Described by her teacher, Taryn Aponte, as a leader to her peers and academically, Fietz is a member of the Student Leader Corps and serves as a role model in dedicating herself to her school and community. She has volunteered her time for school projects such as Sports Night and Breakfast with Santa. As a volunteer with Little Hands Helping Little Hands, she has baked desserts for the residents of Ronald McDonald House and has shared her

outstanding math abilities as a Peer Tutor with other students. Each year, Levittown Community Council honors three students who have done outstanding volunteer work in their school and in the community. A student from each of the local schools is selected by faculty of that school and the board of directors of the Council selects the first place winner. The students are presented with certificates by the Council and prizes for each of the winners are donated by Sterling National Bank and VFW Post 9592 of Levittown. The certificates congratulate the students on their accomplishments and thanks them for the work they’ve done. Each certificate says, “Your efforts and acts of kindness are an example of the spirit the Levittown Community Council wishes to encourage in residents and those who have a stake in our community.”
