The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!
New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for
After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

PTA Honors Staff
Village Elementary School PTA hosted its annual Staff Recognition Luncheon to express their gratitude and appreciation to the school’s hardworking staff. Spring arrival was the inspiration for this year’s picnic-themed event. The lunchroom was transformed into a festive picnic setting complete with blue and white gingham tablecloths, yellow sunflowers and the requisite picnic baskets. Everyone was
treated to a spread of hot and cold hero sandwiches, salads, fresh fruit and an array of scrumptious desserts. The PTA was honored to have School Superintendent Dr. Rogers and colleagues as well as Syosset School Board president Tracy Frankel and many other board members attend. A special award was also presented at the luncheon to Mrs. Jody Heitner, who is retiring after 20+ years. Mrs. Heitner was bestowed the
PTA Distinguished Service Award award in recognition of her exemplary efforts and her warm, caring approach. Principal Kasper and the PTA also recognized and presented flowers to five wonderful teaching assistants who are also retiring this year after many years of service - Ms. Lorraine Fauci, Ms. Maryann Goldstein, Ms. Joan McDermott, Ms. Helen Petrou and Ms. Mary Serikstad.

In each library there’s a unique feature to hunt for, and you’ll earn prizes as you go along.” Open to all ages, this selfpaced journey takes place from July 1 through August 31. The eighth grade students of the East Woods School recently participated in a brand new Leadership Program established by Head of School, Laura Kang. As part of the program, students met and heard from the executive directors of seven nonprofits in the fall. After learning about the mission, programs, financial structure and goals of each program, they had the difficult task of choosing one to support with their year-long project. The students chose to help and support Pal-O-Mine located in Islandia, NY. Pal-O-Mine is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to aid growth, learning, and healing. Individuals that utilize this organization consist of children and adults with disabilities, those who have been abused or neglected, the military
and the economically compromised. Pal-O-Mine’s programs include adaptive riding and unmounted horsemanship, equine assisted learning, equine assisted psychotherapy, hippotherapy, military programs, and corporate workshops. “Students gain many skills in the leadership programs we have here at Pal-O-Mine,” said Lisa Gatti, CEO and Founder of Pal-O-Mine. “From the time they walk onto the property, students remain respectful to themselves, their peers, their staff, our staff/volunteers and all of the animals. They are asked to hand in any electronics they may have in order to strengthen peer relationships and get the most out of the time they spend with the animals and each other.” Some of the tasks that the East Woods students completed at the facility included mucking paddocks
for the horses, disposing of heavy manure filled wheelbarrows, raking, brushing and shedding out the miniature horses. While taking on the responsibility of exercising the donkeys, students also walked the donkeys over to Pal-OMine’s separate property and visited participants of J-STEP, an adult vocational program provided by the organization. Other responsibilities included bathing, brushing and walking the horses. The East Woods students donated supplies such as gloves, tape, leather cleaner, towels and a wheelbarrow and spent 26 volunteer hours of work and labor onsite. At the completion of the program, the students traveled back to Pal-O-Mine to deliver almost $2,000 worth of cash, gift cards and wish list items to Lisa Gatti, CEO and Founder of Pal-OMine.

Premiere Percussionists Perform
Special sounds filled the Hicksville High School gymnasium as members of the nationally acclaimed UMass Amherst Minuteman Marching Band percussion ensemble from the University of Massachusetts Amherst provided a special concert for students. One of the proudest
marching percussion sections in the country, led by Drum Corps International Hall of Fame member Thom Hannum, the UMass percussionists performed a lengthy list of special, toe-tapping tunes, including “Game of Tones” and “Shortcut Home.” The group also paid homage to Hicksville hometown
hero Billy Joel with a performance of “Just the Way You Are.” The UMass Amherst Minuteman Marching Band percussion ensemble’s visit was arranged by Hicksville High School Coordinator of Music and Drama/Band Director Chad Wyman.
Creativity And Conservation Second grade students at Fork Lane Elementary School in Hicksville have been learning about the importance of taking care of their community and the world around them. As part of their studies on environmental conservation, students discussed how creating new things from old things can help limit the exhaustion of valuable natural resources and help preserve the Earth. The end result had students developing handmade projects that
promoted conservation, applying concepts from their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) lessons to their work. The process included reading stories relating to the overall theme, “What does it mean to be creative?” then researching different ways to reduce, reuse or recycle items we use each day. Teachers then challenged their students to create something new, either from their natural environment or from items that can be reused or
recycled. Students began with a sketch and later turned their ideas into reality. Projects covered composting, traditional farming, gardening and recycling as well as energy creation and conservation. As a culmination, the youngsters presented their projects to parents in a mini-exhibit and sang songs about the Earth, donning special ceremonial Earth hats they crafted themselves.

Fun Facts About Hot Air Balloons Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville recently welcomed Lee Teitsworth, a hot air balloon pilot/educator/ trainer, to provide a fun lesson on aviation, including the math and science behind flight as well as some fun facts about hot air balloons. Teitsworth did not come empty handed. He brought the RE/MAX hot air balloon
with him, and although the weather prohibited him from taking flight in the balloon, the presenter partially inflated the balloon inside the school gymnasium and allowed students to settle inside. When fully inflated, the balloon is 90,000 cubic feet; to put it into perspective for the young audience, Teitsworth said this amounts to 90,000
basketballs. Students also took a stroll out to the back playground, where Teitsworth demonstrated the strength of the balloon’s wicker basket and safely fired the balloon burner.
