Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think? Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.
Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.
Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough. And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set! Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations. But that “you” time… that’s something you can never get back. Priceless.
Friday, June 7th kicks off the 64th year of The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program. Movie lovers with big hearts and a few spare hours will head to local theatres to help benefit adult and pediatric cancer research and care at DanaFarber Cancer Institute. Since 1949, volunteers have been passing collection canisters after the showing of a movie “trailer” about the Jimmy Fund at participating movie theaters. The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays (evenings only), and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (days and evenings) from June 7th to July 25th at participating National Amusements movie theaters in several states including

This year there are two new theatres participating in Massachusetts, the Somerville Theatre in Somerville and the Capitol Theatre in Arlington. The Jimmy Fund/ Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program is the Jimmy Fund’s oldest annual fundraising effort. Over the past 64 years, the Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections program has raised $29,000,000 for DanaFarber. In its early years, the Theatre Program attracted the support of such stars as Jimmy Cagney, Loretta Young, Bing Crosby, and baseball legend Ted Williams. Through collaborative research and clinical trials, Stony Brook Cancer Center specialists are developing new treatment approaches to help their patients and advance cancer medicine.” Central to expanding cancer research at Stony Brook is Stony Brook Medicine’s plan to build a state-of-theart translational medical research building (MART) that will focus on cancer research, advanced imaging, and a new cancer center. Projected to break ground in early 2014, the 250,000-square-foot-facility would be located
on the Stony Brook Medicine campus where scientists and physicians would work side by side to research and discover new treatments and technology. The MART’s cancer care will triple Stony Brook’s capacity for outpatient services and enhance all cancer care for Long Island and beyond. According to the American Cancer Society, cancer survivorship continues to increase but cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the United States and 1.6 million new cases are projected to occur in the U.S. this year. Stories of hope, however, from all age groups were reflected during the celebration at Stony Brook. Samantha Fried, of Islandia, a 37-year-old breast cancer survivor and the Stony Brook patient speaker, relayed how she was shocked by her diagnosis at age 35. After undergoing a double mastectomy, she received additional treatment at Stony Brook. She persevered.
While undergoing treatment she attended Stony Brook University School of Nursing. Fried completed the program, received her RN degree, and recently passed the board examinations. She has also completed her treatments and is cancer free. Joshua Sackstein, 23, of Fort Salonga, and a survivor of childhood leukemia, came to the event because he thought it would be moving to see and talk to other survivors at one setting. Attending the celebration, he said, helps him to continue valuing life at a young age and is inspiring him to find a way to give back and help others going through treatment. “This day makes me thank God, all of my doctors and caregivers at Stony Brook, and really everyone who has joined this fight against cancer,” said Roy Romard, of Sayville. The 56-year-old lymphoma survivor was treated at Stony Brook from the time he was diagnosed in 2007. He recently passed the five-year mark of being cancer free. As a prelude to his celebrity guest appearance and message of perseverance at Stony Brook’s NCSD celebration, Zohn took his message personally to cancer patients in Stony Brook University Hospital on June 8th. “I know it stinks to be in the hospital,” he told a group of pediatric patients gathered in the playroom at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “You’ve got to have trust in all these guys at the hospital, because they’re going to do all they can to make you healthy.” “It was cool,” said five-year-old George Cochoy of Zohn’s visit. Cochoy and other children engaged Zohn in a rousing game of “Zingo!” in the playroom before each received an autographed neckerchief and photo of Zohn. He also distributed “headbands of hope” from an organization that supports the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds research for childhood cancer. NCSD is an annual, worldwide celebration each June when hundreds of communities partake in a symbolic event to celebrate survivorship and life. Nearly 300 cancer survivors, their families, friends and the doctors, nurses and other professionals who cared for them at Stony Brook University Cancer Center celebrated Stony Brook’s 9th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) on June 9th. Ethan Zohn, Survivor: Africa TV show winner, former professional soccer player, and a two-time cancer survivor, brought a message of perseverance to cancer patients. “Cancer changed me, and I know it has changed you, and in the long-run that can be for the better,” said Zohn to fellow cancer survivors. “Living with cancer is part of your long-term survival. Remember that living with and beating your disease makes you a true winner and survivor in life, which is not a game or a show.” Zohn said he lost 32 pounds in 39 days in Survivor: Africa, but it is nothing compared to the survivor battle he is fighting against Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He has had two stem cell transplants and has been in remission for 15 months. “This is an important day for our patients, the doctors and staff at Stony Brook who work so hard to help cure them, and the entire community in our ongoing fight against cancer,” said Yusuf A. Hannun, MD, Director, Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine. “The era of genomic medicine that we are now in is creating a kind of silent revolution in cancer medicine, in which new targeted therapies are increasing remission rates

Under his supervision, the school has implemented new guideline practices for New York State’s Annual Professional Performance Review, incorporated new Common Core Learning Standards, designed new teacher workshops focusing on best practices, and reorganized the school’s special education program with its focus on co-teaching practices. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage Union Free School District, has been appointed to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Technology for the district. His appointment was unanimously accepted at the district’s May 28th Board of Education meeting. Mr. Schneider, who has more than 12 years of experience in education, has been Principal of JFK Middle School

Professional Diploma in Administration from LIU Post and merited the distinction of receiving the Walter Seuss Award in recognition of being the “outstanding student in the program.” He is currently working towards his dissertation for his Doctorate in Learning and Teaching through Hofstra University. “I am very excited to be working with the Board of Education, Mr. Clark and Central Administration and the entire Bethpage school community in this new position,” Mr. Schneider said of his appointment. “Bethpage is a very special place, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to continue working with the dedicated staff of the Bethpage schools in preparing our children for a successful future.”
Breast Cancer Help, Inc. former President Lorraine Pace presented $2,000 scholarships to West Babylon High School senior Kimone Beaumont and Bay Shore High School senior Cassandra Crooks. The annual scholarships are awarded to students whose lives have been touched by a cancer diagnosis. After supporting a family member through cancer, both students plan to pursue careers
in health care to be able to care for others. Ms. Beaumont plans to attend Farmingdale University to study nursing while Ms. Crooks will study pre-med at Suffolk Community College. Breast Cancer Help, Inc., created the Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center at 32 Park Avenue in Bay Shore to provide non-medical support for those dealing with cancer. Through a series of free

services including exercise classes, art therapy, and massage, the Center provides cancer survivors with support to overcome the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. Earlier this year, The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation aligned with Breast Cancer Help, Inc. to provide outreach, education and programs for cancer survivors on Long Island.

Escallier was honored for her nationally grantfunded evidence-based scholarship on nursing education, delivery models and organizational outcomes, according to the NSHC. She received the prestigious award at the NHSC’s annual Nurse of Excellence Award Ceremony on May 23 at the Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury, NY. Each of the NHSC’s member hospitals nominated a nurse for the annual awards, and the Deans of area nursing schools submitted nominees for nursing excellence in education. Escallier has been a Principal Investigator on federally funded nursing research on retention strategies in diverse workforces. She has presented her evidencebased scholarly research at local, national and international conferences and been published in dozens of peer-reviewed journals. She has presented nationally and internationally on the process of creating and maintaining diverse workforces, and on evaluation and outcome methodologies. In October 2012, Escallier provided a podium presentation in collaboration with DNP doctoral student Emily Cupelli on “Sensory Processing Differences and Urinary Incontinence in School Aged Children” at the International Children’s Continence Society/Education and Resources for Improving Childhood Continence/ British Association of Pediatric Urology Joint Congress, for the Royal College of Physicians in London, England. “Lori’s approach to scholarship is that differences do not provide impasses, but rather, opportunities for scholarly exchange and growth,” said Lee Xippolitos, RN, PhD, CARN, CS, NPP, CNAA, BC, Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Nursing. “She has continued scholarly integration across disciplines throughout her career, working with faculty from various schools, hospitals as
well as other national universities.” Escallier has received numerous accolades for her work, including the 2012 Five Year Distinguished Service Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. She is also the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Achievement in Education and Student Relations for the Robert Wood Johnson RWJ Scholars. She serves as a Team Leader for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, leading accreditation teams to the nation’s top-rated schools of nursing, both public and private. “Lori is a leader within the School of Nursing, the University and our profession,” Xippolitos said. “Her collegiality and mentorship is valued by faculty and staff and her influence is far reaching. Her perspective and presence as a nursing scholar has enriched the school’s development.” “The most satisfying aspect of my work is watching my student’s dreams become realities,” Escallier said. “I consider myself fortunate to be able to provide opportunities that assist underrepresented and disadvantaged students overcome the obstacles that face them. (ACLD) held its largest fundraising event of the year, The Enviable Life Ball at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on Thursday, May 30th. Hollywood actor, producer and Commack native, Joe Sabatino, of the CBS series Vegas was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Over the past two decades, Joe has enjoyed a robust acting career in film and television. Recently, he partnered with Sony/ NBC Universal as CoExecutive Producer on “Necessary Roughness,” a sports drama on the USA Network. Joe Sabatino inspired the crowd with his touching words, “With all of the changes on the horizon for ACLD, we all must work together and support this mission. Trophy Game To Be Held The Town of Oyster Bay is hosting a special baseball game between the U.S. Military All-Stars and the Long Island Force High School All-Star Team. The two top-tier baseball teams will square off at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Tuesday, June 25th at 8 p.m. for the 2013 Supervisor’s Trophy. “The U.S. Military AllStars are an elite baseball team comprised of active duty service members,” Supervisor Venditto said. “They play around the nation and are frequently the guests of major league and minor league baseball teams, as well as countless other professional sports franchises. They are terrific athletes who also have pledged themselves to protect and defend the United States of America.” Admission to this contest is FREE. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto, whose ties to the baseball community in Massapequa were an important catalyst to bringing this game to the Town, said that most important mission carried out by the U.S. Military All-Stars is to promote the awareness of all Americans in support of the honorable sacrifices our armed forces
make at the “Tip of the Spear.” “Freedom isn’t free,” Councilman Pinto said. “It is a right given to all Americans through the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. This special event will recognize our military and, at the same time, celebrate the great American pastime of baseball.” For the first time, the U.S. Military All-Stars will play a team of prominent high school all-stars, including many local standouts, thanks to the efforts of Long Island Baseball. “It provides a great showcase for the area’s young players and scouts from local major league teams are expected to be in attendance,” said Anthony Passalacqua, CoFounder of Long Island Baseball. “The Long Island Force High School AllStar Team will represent Long Island well and, at the same time, they will be a part of paying tribute to our heroes in the military.” Prior to the game, a baseball clinic for local little league players will be conducted by the members of the U.S. Military AllStars and Long Island Baseball, one of Long Island’s premier baseball academies. In addition, there will be a special barbecue for the players and clinic participants. “Many facets of the community are coming together to make this event a memorable one,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Our local little leagues will be on hand along with our local Veterans organizations, most notably Massapequa American Legion Post 1066, which will be supporting the program and providing the color guard.” Supervisor Venditto said he is extremely proud the Town of Oyster Bay was asked to host the event. “The U.S. Military All-Stars will be making their exclusive Long Island appearance here in the Town. IMPORTANCE OF OUR FLAG - In honor of Flag Day on June 14th, Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District hosted retired Lt. Col. Joe Regale and Sgt. Maj. Larry Pinto from the United Veterans Organization of Nassau County. Together they spoke with students in grades K-5 on the importance of the American flag. As part of a weeklong Recess Relay at Charles Campagne Elementary School, students participated in daily health and wellness-related activities. Throughout the week, students made luminarias for their walk-a-thon, wore sunseeker bracelets to remind them to wear sunscreen, pledged to eat
five fruits and vegetables a day, and culminated the festivities by participating in a field day. One of the week’s activities included a special presentation by comic magician Brian Richards, who used humor and magic to illustrate the importance of eating “5-a-day the color way.” He challenged students
to not only eat five fruits and vegetables a day, but to make sure they vary the types and colors for maximum health benefits. Mr. Richards also encouraged students to live an active and healthy lifestyle and to share the information with their families.
TEDDY BEAR PICNIC - Kindergarten students at Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District held a special picnic celebration with their families and favorite teddy bears in the school’s annual Teddy Bear Picnic. (NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction.
If a teen is caught up in a dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road. The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, www. distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. • Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. • Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t. • An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee. The Councilwoman added that non-residents may visit Tobay, Centre Island and Ransom Beaches Monday
through Friday for a $50 daily fee and Centre Island and Ransom Beaches Saturdays, Sundays and holidays for a daily fee of $60. Non-residents can obtain a seasonal sticker for Tappen Beach for $120. The daily admission fee for non-residents without a sticker at Tappen Beach is $30. “The Town’s beaches offer a chance to jump into the water and have some fun or just relax and enjoy the warm sun and crystal blue skies in a comfortable setting,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The beaches are just another example of all the special things that the Town offers its residents and why the Town is such a great place to live.” For more information about Town of Oyster beaches or about obtaining a beach pass, Town residents should call the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Beach Division at 516.797.4110 or visit the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Helping Doctors Help Patients Stop Smoking (NAPSI)—To help protect you and your family from tobaccorelated death and disease, researchers from Legacy®, a national public health organization dedicated to building a world where anyone can quit smoking, recommend two actions: stop smoking or never start. If you do smoke or use tobacco, speak to your doctor about quitting smoking. A survey of more than 3,146 adults in the U.S. conducted by Legacy
discovered that more than one in 10 smokers have concealed their smoking status from a health care provider— nearly half of them stated it was because they are ashamed that they smoke. Another reason for not disclosing this important information to a medical professional: two-thirds surveyed who did not disclose their smoking status reported not wanting to be lectured about smoking. Fortunately, health care professionals such as
doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists and pharmacists can help smokers by bringing up the subject with patients. To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients. Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to
successful intervention. • Be positive and encouraging. Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting. Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey. • Encourage smokers not to give up. Smoking is a chronic, relapsing medical condition; the average smoker tries to quit 6/9 times in their lifetime. Remind smokers that quitting is difficult, but can be attainable.
• Make sure smokers understand smoking for what it really is: a treatable medical condition. • Suggest patients consider evidencebased treatments, such as over-the-counter or prescription medications, and refer them to counseling to help them quit. The only hint that you are an overachiever is that diploma, so you had better be hard working! Given enough motivation, enough drive and the desire to succeed, even a college dropout can become the billionaire behind one of the world’s biggest companies. So before you pout about not getting that 100 Grade Point Average, or that perfect SAT score, remember, one day you could become Bill Gates.
