Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. A young woman who loves Eileens services mentioned, “Being able to call up an experienced local and friendly hair

dresser during times like these where I am not comfortable going to a salon is so comforting. She will come to my house and give me a hair cut outside if I want. It doesn’t get much more refreshing than that.” Mary D. from Massapequa, a long-time client of Eileens also has only good things to share; “I live with a crippling disability and getting out is a challenge for me, especially in inclement weather. I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. If I ever need anything from the store before she arrives I simply call her and she will pick it up for me. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant flow of information related to
coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions.

Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short period of time seek professional mental health assistance. To reduce coronavirusrelated anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety • Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus. This could include a social media thread on other topics, or watching movies • Savor small positive moments, amplify positive stories and stay optimistic • Practice mindfulness when managing anxiety such as performing exercises and deep breathing. For those who wish to speak to a mental health professional, CHS offers a host of services including Telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for emergency department (ED) patients, particularly after normal office hours. The service is currently offered in the EDs of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Productive Ways To Spend The Summer After Graduation Graduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives. That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up. The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer, but spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job. • Contact career services offices at your alma mater. Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets. • Seek internships. If part - or full-time employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. Summer internships may already be filled, so scour job boards for fall or winter internships.
• Network. Students who interned can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and find out if the company is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct experience onboard — even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired fields. • When job hunting, don’t get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained. • Customize a résumé for every job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and refine résumés for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing. It can be tempting for recent college grads to spend the summers after graduation relaxing, but those who spend that time productively may land jobs more quickly than those who do not.

Meet The Top Graduates Of Bethpage High School The COVID-19 pandemic has upended many aspects of daily life, especially for graduating seniors of the Class of 2020. Although they were not able to celebrate the completion of high school in the traditional sense, the Bethpage High School valedictorian and salutatorian reflected positively on the last four years. Valedictorian Jessica Kneller is a dedicated student who boasts accomplishments in both academics and athletics. During her high school career, she received the George Washington University Award for Excellence in Science and completed the requirements for the Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma. Jessica was passionate about being involved in school, serving as a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and the Student Civic Key Club, where she assisted in the Bethpage High School Safe Halloween throughout the years. Jessica was a member of the track team and has been a part of the Bethpage school soccer
team since middle school. Culminating her athleticism with her academic achievements, she received the Scholar Athlete award at the Nassau County Soccer Awards. Jessica also plays on a travel soccer team outside of school and volunteers in food drives and fundraisers. Each summer, Jessica stayed connected with her community by serving as a lifeguard at the Bethpage Community Pool. Prior to being certified, she worked as a junior counselor at a day camp with kindergartenaged children. Due to the uncertainty surrounding community pools during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jessica has been working at Tobay Beach in the interim. When asked what her favorite high school memory is, Jessica reflected back on the beginning of her senior year. “My favorite high school memory is Senior Sunrise,” she said. “I remember blasting music in the car with my friends at five in the morning, genuinely excited to start my senior year. It was the first time it really hit

me that I was going to be graduating this year, which made me sad, but also excited for what was to come.” Continuing her positivity from the beginning of the school year, Jessica wants to remind her classmates to remain hopeful during these unprecedented times. “Since schools are closed for the remainder of the year, I’d just like to remind everyone to be hopeful during this hard time,” she said. “Hopefully, we will be able to celebrate
all of our accomplishments in person this summer. While this isn’t the senior year we expected, it is certainly one we will never forget.” Jessica will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in the fall where she will be majoring in engineering. Salutatorian Rahul Busri is a dedicated and highly decorated member of the Bethpage High School community. Excelling in both academics and activism, Rahul received the Robert Nelson Award
for his excellence in independent research and the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award, which signifies a commitment to understanding and addressing difficult social issues with dedication to community action. He is also a Commended National Merit Scholar. Rahul held leadership positions in a variety of student organizations, including serving as president of the Astronomy Club, treasurer of both the Student Civic Key Club and the National Honor Society and vice president of Student Council. He was also the captain of the varsity tennis team. Outside of the classroom, Rahul continued his dedication to academics by tutoring students in several subjects, including chemistry biology and algebra. He also served as an intern for a business called SDC Marketing. SDC Marketing was founded by some of his friends and as a team, they specialize in digital media marketing for small businesses to grow their brands. Rahul’s favorite high school memory is simple, but meaningful. “My
favorite high school memory was probably lunch with my friends,” he said. “After being stressed out because of a difficult test or class, going to lunch and making jokes with my friends was an amazing way to change my mood and get me excited for the rest of the day.” When asked what he would say to his fellow graduating classmates after such a unique and challenging year, Rahul wants to remind them to not look back on this year as a negative, but rather as a starting point for future success. “The shocking end to the school year has left many seniors lacking the feeling of accomplishment a graduating senior normally experiences,” he said. “I want to remind my classmates that our years at Bethpage High School were not in vain. As a class, we have experienced a lot and that has only built a foundation for everything we will accomplish in the future. Aim high and we will go far.” Rahul is attending Stony Brook University in the fall, where he will follow a pre-med track with a major in biochemistry.
Northwell Health To Delay Payments For Patients Financially Impacted By Covid-19 Northwell Health, New York State’s largest health care provider and the state’s largest private employer, has announced that it would delay payments with zero percent interest for a minimum of 60 days for those patients who receive medical services and have been financially impacted with the loss of a job, lost wages or other financial distress resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Northwell has been on the front lines and among the first US health systems to test and treat for COVID-19. The health system is taking this financial step to help alleviate the economic pressure and
stress so many families are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. “We are first and foremost an organization committed to the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Northwell Executive Vice President and Chief Business Strategy Officer Richard Miller. “We live and work here too and are cognizant of the impact the virus is having on people’s physical, mental and financial health. All of these things are connected. We pride ourselves on being a partner with those we serve and being part of the solution to the challenges we collectively face.” Mr. Miller said this
initiative is an extension of Northwell’s already robust financial assistance programs, which include payment plan options. “We’ve always worked with our patients, devising programs that are consistent with their ability to pay,” Mr. Miller said, explaining that Northwell’s financial assistance programs apply to individuals making up to 500 percent of federal poverty guidelines, exceeding New York State regulations requiring financial assistance for those earning up to 300 percent of the federal benchmarks. “It’s something we already have in place and have had in place for many years. “
“We will delay payments for a minimum of 60 days for those impacted financially by this crisis and, as always, work with them afterwards,” Mr. Miller said. “The important thing to remember is that nobody should delay needed medical services because of their ability to pay. FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from
the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. Chamber Singers Group Named A Hicksville Student Violinist Makes Finalist In National Choral Competition A Name For Herself Kudos to Lee Avenue Elementary School student-musician Grace Cho, who has been racking up accolades as a top violinist! Grace was selected as concertmistress of the Hicksville School District’s Elementary All-District Orchestra, an annual concert that combines the talents of all seven elementary schools into a 100-plus-member orchestra. Grace’s outstanding scores at last spring’s New York State School Music Association Spring adjudication festival earned her seats in the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Festival and her selection to participate in the Long
Island String Festival Orchestra. Grace played with the All-County ensemble; however, like many concerts scheduled for this spring, LISFA and the districtwide elementary concert were canceled in accordance with closures put into effect to contain the spread of COVID-19. According to Grace’s orchestra teacher, Richard Enderle, she also took the initiative to audition for the Gemini Youth Orchestra, an elite, audition-based orchestra that is very selective in choosing its members. Grace not only was chosen for the ensemble, but was seated third in her section. She was scheduled to perform at Carnegie Hall
and the USDAN Center for Performing Arts, but those concerts have been postponed as well. “Grace is not only an incredibly passionate and gifted performer, but she is humble, and a leader in my orchestra,” said Enderle. “She always offers to help out in any way that she can, even conducting and warming up the orchestra. Grace is truly a one-of-akind musician that I am very fortunate to have taught for the past three years.” Like so many others who are familiar with Grace’s playing, Enderle looks forward to the day when he can once again see and hear her perform live.

Back in February, the 27-member Chamber Singers group and the school’s Concert Choir were named semifinalists in the competition. Both groups are led by Hicksville High School choral director Michelle Shmuel. “Being named a finalist is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the students in the choral program,” said Shmuel, who submitted extensive video footage from past performances as well as descriptions of both the Chamber Singers and Concert Choir. “We are
flattered to be selected amongst such talented ensembles from across the nation! This news has been such an honor, and it means so much as we are all struggling to find positivity during these difficult times! For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot Water And Soap The reason handwashing is at the top
of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear
isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective
at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemicallybased cleansers for other home tasks.
