Field Day Fun At Fork Lane

tudents at Fork Lane Elementary School participated in a variety of fun, friendly and competitive physical activities as part of the school’s annual Field Day. The spring staple was comprised of team-building activities such as line soccer, snowball throw, cap flag, tug-of-war and circle pass. Students also participated in roller racers and individual foot races while cheering for each other and building camaraderie. A great time was had by all!

Simmer Down, Society By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day. What is it that makes our society so…unsatisfied? We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. And yet, other than the occasional universal
comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to
fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

Student To Perform
Marissa Ready, a student at South Woods Middle School has been selected for the 2015 Middle School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall and will perform at the storied venue this month. Ready, an eighthgrade singer in the South Woods Chorus, auditioned last fall for the Honors
Performance Series and was accepted after a review of her application and audition recording. Ready will be singing with other select performers from 49 United States, several provinces in Canada, and several foreign countries. Ready has studied choral music for four years. She takes private voice lessons and has performed vocal solos at NYSSMA. This year, she was chosen to represent South Woods in the Nassau Music Educators Association Division III All County Chorus. In addition, Marissa has performed many solos in her school chorus concerts. She and her fellow finalists will come together
for five days to learn from choral music composer, arranger and this year’s conductor, Greg Gilpin. The performance held on Saturday, June 27th is open to the public and tickets can be purchased through the Carnegie Hall box office. The Honors Performance Series was created to showcase accomplished individual high school and middle school performers on an international level by allowing them to study under master conductors and perform in the celebrated venue.
Sophomores Shine On May 30th, the sophomore team of George Chai, Mohammed El-Abtah and Rohan Chandakkar participated at the NY State Science Congress held at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The team qualified to participate in the competition after winning Highest Honors at the LI Science Congress in
April. At the state-level competition, the team won Honorable Mention in the Senior Physical Science Division. The NY State Science Congress is run by the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) after a selective process highlighting the top science students in New
York. At the Congress, students are given seven minutes to present their research projects in poster board format. An additional five minutes are provided for students to field questions from the judges. Throughout the day students are treated to a catered lunch and presentations from leading scientists in their field.

Senior Scientist
The Hicksville Public School District’s first annual Talent for the Troops program raised more than $10,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit organization offering programs, service and events for wounded military veterans. Faculty members throughout the district hosted a talent show, showcasing various performances for their colleagues and students who filled the Hicksville High School auditorium
to capacity. The program, which opened with the national anthem sung by Nassau County Legislator Laura M. Schaefer, was comprised of teachers displaying talents including singing, dancing and acting. Attendees also watched a patriotic slideshow featuring various veterans’ thoughts about their service. “So many leadership and life lessons are learned in the military, and one of those lessons is that we stand by each other,” said
Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso. “There are thousands of wounded warriors returning who are dealing with pain and suffering. It is important to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them as they deal with these challenges. Abrar Nadroo, a senior at Syosset High School, has received the Ezra Levy High School Science Award and was recently named a semifinalist for the Davidson Fellows Scholarship, one of the most prestigious high school scholarships in the world. The Ezra Levy Award is given by the American Association for Clinical Chemistry to three or four high school students who conduct chemistryrelated research projects that represent the highest
quality of science education and investigation available. Nadroo’s research, titled “Toward a Novel Treatment for Corneal Fibrosis: Establishing a Biochemical Model of the Corneal Keratocyte,” was presented at a banquet held at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York on June 3 as a result of this award. Nadroo also received a plaque and a check for $200. The Davidson Fellows Scholarship awards $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 scholarships to
extraordinary students who have completed a significant piece of work in a number of categories including science, technology, literature and philosophy. If chosen as a finalist, Nadroo will be invited to Washington D.C. for a special reception. First grade Syosset Daisy Troop 3450 recently interacted with several dogs at the DogAbility Center in Hicksville. DogAbility trains dogs for canine-assisted activities for children and adults with and without special needs. Specifically, the dogs are trained by volunteers to spend time
with people as both therapy dogs and activity dogs. Various groups such as the scouts, autistic children, special education students, senior citizens, Doggie & Me pre-school programs enjoy spending quality times with these specially trained dogs. The Daisies loved spending time with all of
the dogs. Unbeknownst to them, the girls worked on competency and compassion skills while learning how to approach a dog, give it food or a treat, give a dog basic commands (stop, sit) and agility commands (jump, go through the tunnel). What an enriching and fun experience!

Improvements have been made to the dormitories and the dining hall to provide the best experience possible for the campers. Thanks to the renovations that were made to the dining hall, campers and staff members are now able to eat together rather than in shifts. “Can we come again next year?” asked Girl Scout Annamaria Brancato. “This was so much fun!” chimed in Girl Scout Daniella Anastasio. Recently, Leaders Karen Tanner and Christine Pioreck took Girl Scout Junior Troop #2507, Cadette Troop #2084, and tagalong representatives of Nassau County Boy Scout Den #3 (Webelos Michael Tanner and Michael Serafino) to visit the restored 1907 Historical Courthouse Museum Building at 140 Glen Street in Glen Cove. In two mock trials, Scouts dressed and participated as judges, lawyers, plaintiffs, defendants, witnesses and jurors. As a bonus, Nassau County District Court Judges Paul Meli and Colin O’Donnell, along with NY State Supreme Court Justice Timothy Driscoll, were on hand to answer questions and provide support. “I won my first case!” announced the Plaintiff’s attorney, Erica Tanner. In the civil case against Goldilocks for her misconduct of bad manners, Mama Bear’s ferocious testimony (given by Olivia Walters), coupled with baby bear’s cuddly comments (portrayed by Giada San Filippo) swooned the jurors to find the world’s most famous golden haired girl (played by Kaitlin O’Rourke) GUILTY! After an ear-shattering gasp of disbelief, the courthouse erupted into a flutter of conversation and Honorable Paul Meli had to advise
presiding Junior Girl Scout Judge Eden Price to bang the gavel several times to restore order to her court. When the defendant’s attorney (Gianna Serafino) was later questioned by reporter moms, she reflected, “It would have helped our case, if Goldilocks had at least cleaned her bowl or picked up the broken chair.” The court was busy that day with a second trial
To boost the case, her attorney (Mary Rose Rubino) called two additional witnesses (Katie Weglarz and Caroline O’Rourke); but the courthouse was left asking more questions than receiving answers. In this competition, professional writers and editors from the Long Island Press review over 2,500 submissions from high schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Special Olympics The Nassau County Police Activity League (NCPAL) Special Needs Unit recently hosted approximately 150 athletes with special needs as part of the 2015 Special Olympics New York Basketball Tournament at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The day-long tournament saw a total of 16 basketball teams participate, up from 13 in 2014. Due to the increased number of teams, games were spread out over two sessions morning and afternoon. The tournament concluded with players receiving medals and award ribbons. The morning’s opening ceremony began with
NCPAL Special Needs Unit athletes carrying banners as part of the parade of teams and Michael Korins, a vocalist diagnosed with autism at age 3, singing the Star Spangled Banner and the Canadian National Anthem. Also participating in the opening ceremony was the Nassau County Police Explorer Color Guard. The games opened after the athletes recited the Special Olympics Creed: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” This was the seventh time Nassau County PAL participated in the Long Island Region of Special Olympics New York basketball program and the fifth time it has
hosted the tournament. The teams participating in the tournament included the Special Needs Unit Knights; New Hyde Park Knights; SCO Owls; Commack Sharks; Long Island Lions; ACDS Thunderbolts; AHRC Starz; and Oakville Skywalkers, a Canadian team that also took part in the 2014 tournament and returned this year in tribute of their late Coach, Stu Thomas A team from Albany, the Springbrook Thunderbolts, made their way to the tournament for the first time. Athletes ranged from age 12 to mid-to-late-40s. NCPAL Special Needs Unit Board Members Harvey Pollack, Frank
Simeone, Eileen Hoberg, Joan Crader were joined by Sgt. Doug Kenah Commanding Officer of NCPAL, Police Officer/ Director Jethro Cardona, Police Officer/Director Matt Perlungher and Holy Trinity Lutheran Athletic Director Kelly Dempsey, as well as numerous high school volunteers and Hicksville Fire Department EMS members to support and encourage the participants in front of an estimated 750 spectators. “We look forward to this event each year and are excited over its continued growth and participation. The Special Olympics New York Basketball Tournament
presents a fun-filled forum that fosters important fundamentals of socialization, sportsmanship and teamwork for children with special needs,” said Harvey Pollack, NCPAL Trustee Special Needs Unit. Special Olympics New York Regional Director Diane Colonna commented, “This tournament gives participants a place where they can be treated equal among their peers while focusing on their abilities, not their disability.” Tim Flynn, director of programs at Special Olympics New York, said, “When you see the athletes on the court
during the tournament, it is no longer about what these children with special needs cannot do, but rather what they can do.” The Special Needs Unit of Nassau County Police Activity League serves children ages 5 and up with varying disabilities. Sport, recreation and socialization activities are beneficial for children with special needs who have difficulty fitting into typical sports programs. Its primary goal is to develop physical, mental and social skills to help children with special needs gain confidence and self-esteem for reaching their maximum potential.
