Congratulations to eighth-grader Michael Gadinis from South Woods Middle School in Syosset for winning the Claire Friedlander Upstander Award, presented by the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County. The award recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and daily involvement in enhancing the school and community.
Michael has served as a peer mediator and volunteer tutor at South Woods Middle School, having collaborated with peers to lead and organize a successful blood drive. He also works with preschoolers with special needs at Variety Preschool, and reads to second-graders at Village Elementary School, as well as a person with autism. He also volunteers his time
to prepare and distribute lunches for the homeless. “Michael is a bright star. The award he received is richly deserved and I am certain he will prove himself a powerful, compassionate and successful leader [in the future],” said South Woods teacher and Peer Mediation Club adviser Susan Fisher, who nominated Michael for the award. “It has been an honor to know Michael, teach him and learn from him how to be an upstander and an agent for change. He is our hope for a kinder, more compassionate world.” As a result, Michael received a glass plaque and a check for $2,500 from the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County. ALS Awareness Students at Walt Whitman Elementary School in Syosset recently pulled together to raise more than $3,500 for a very important cause – the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. An issue close to the students’ hearts, the Walt Whitman Student Council began spreading awareness
about leukemia and lymphoma and distributing collection canisters to the different classrooms for families and staff to donate to the LLS’s Pennies for Patients program. The effort consisted of incentives to classes that reached donation benchmarks, including board games and ice

The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Environmental Resources will host a public scoping session on Monday, June 20th, at Town Hall in Oyster Bay beginning at 7 p.m. According to Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano, the purpose of this scoping session is to allow residents the opportunity to provide input on the topics and information to be included in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) which the applicant will prepare on the proposed Syosset Park mixed use
development, located on the north side of the Long Island Expressway in Syosset, just east of Robbins Lane. C o u n c i l m a n Coschignano noted that at the meeting, residents can review and discuss the Draft Scope for the DEIS, which includes a description of the proposed project, potentially significant adverse impacts, initial identification of mitigation measures, and reasonable alternatives to be considered. The Draft Scope can also be viewed in advance of the meeting on
the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. The Councilman added that the meeting will be held in the hearing room of Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, beginning at 7 p.m. The public is invited to come and provide comments on the Draft Scope. Written comments will be accepted until July13th and should be directed to the Department of Environmental Resources, as described on the Town’s website.

National Merit Scholar Congratulations to Syosset High School senior William Long, who is a 2016 National Merit Scholarship winner! William is among approximately 7,500 students nationwide to receive National Merit Scholarships totaling about $33 million. William was chosen among 15,000 finalists determined to possess the strongest combination of academic skills and achievements, extracurricular accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
He initially qualified for the competition by scoring among the highest in the state and top 1 percent in the country on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in 2014. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, William completed a detailed scholarship application, which included writing an essay and providing information about his extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions. His outstanding academic record, a high SAT score
and an endorsement from the high school, all served as criteria for his award. W i l l i a m ’ s accomplishments include having participated in various research programs, including Advanced and Honors science research course studies at Syosset High School, DNA research at The Board Institute of Harvard and MIT and subaquatic acoustics and submarine biomedical research at the U. S. Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory.

I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers
currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through
the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.

SPECIAL CEREMONY - Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone recently attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony for Brian Sweeney of Troop 381, Hicksville which was held at the Holy Name of Jesus Church in Woodbury. Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve after completing hours of community service and attaining numerous merit badges. Also on hand for the Ceremony was Senior Vice Commander of the Hicksville VFW Post 3211 Bill Torres, Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer, Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker and Commander of the Hicksville VFW Post 3211 William Walden.
Congratulations to Syosset High School senior Leslie Epps, who is the recipient of the National Honor Society scholarship semifinalist award. Leslie, who serves as president for the Syosset High School NHS chapter, is among 300 national semifinalists awarded $1,500 based on her commitment to the community, her studies and her overall altruism. In addition to maintaining a 99.5 cumulative GPA in Honors
and Advanced Placement courses, Leslie has been an instrumental force in initiatives to improve the lives of Syosset students and people in the greater community. Last year, she helped to launch the high school’s “Language Partners” program, a collaborative effort between the Guidance Department, the English Department and NHS in which NHS members are paired with English as a New Language students to practice speaking
conversational English and assist ENL students as they acclimate to American culture and society. Leslie was also chosen to spearhead this year’s schoolwide We CARE fundraiser that produced more than 150 backpacks filled with much-needed survival items for the homeless. She will attend Macaulay Honors College at City College of New York’s School of Architecture.

Taking Home the Gold More than 65 student musicians from PlainviewOld Bethpage School District recently received the highest rating after competing in the 2016 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Major Ensemble Evaluation Festival. Both string ensembles
at John F. Kennedy High School, the full string orchestra and the chamber orchestra, competed and received “gold with distinction” ratings. Only two percent of all competing ensembles performing statewide receive this rating each year.
Under the direction of teacher Glen Rubin, the students performed 30 minute programs for two adjudicators at Hofstra University in Hempstead.
