Forensic Experts Once again, the Syosset High School Forensics Society scored big at the New York State Forensic League Championship Tournament held at Hofstra University April 29th-30th. The team won 1st place in the Speech events division, placed 2nd in both the Debate events and Student Congress divisions and won the award for Best Overall in the state. This year’s team produced three individual
state champions as well: Ronit Dhulia (Lincoln/ Douglas debate-novice level); the team of Jahnavi Arora and Aram Moghaddassi (Lincoln/ Douglas debate-varsity level) and Iree Mann (Oral Interpretation-varsity level). According to Syosset Forensics Society adviser Lydia Esslinger, students qualify for the state competition either through a consistently
good showing during the academic year or at a regional qualifying competition. Eighty students from Syosset High School’s team qualified for the championship this year, capturing numerous placement awards in addition to the state champion trophies. Hybrid Theory I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual
accomplishments they work so diligently to help achieve. I remember being a student myself back at the end of high school and having my mom drop my graduation announcement off at the old office on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst knowing that, the following week, I would receive my copy of “The South Bay” and find my picture inside. How exciting to be a part of the hometown paper; and to share the good news with all my friends and neighbors. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone. This is our goal at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers each and every week, and we hope that you – as readers – can always find something you enjoy within these pages.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto announced that the deadline has been extended to June 14th for those wishing to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s “Battle of the Bands” competition. The program, which is orchestrated through the Town of Oyster Bay’s Cultural & Performing Arts Division of the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, is a unique opportunity showcase some of the Town’s young musical talent. Councilman Imbroto said the deadline was extended to make sure that every band wishing to participate will have ample time to apply. “We want as many band as possible to a part of this special program,” Councilman Imbroto said. “Selected bands will be given an incredible opportunity to compete live at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Music Under the Stars Concert Series on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa.” If you’re under 21 years of age and at least one member of your band lives in the Town of Oyster Bay,

Oyster Bay Town residents can expect some upgrades at Town pools this summer, according to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. “As a mother with young children, I appreciate the opportunity our pools bring for our children to recreate and keep cool all summer long,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Spending a day at one of our Town pools provides a wonderful way to connect with family and friends while enjoying the amenities provided at our top-rate facilities.” Residents visiting our community pools, including Marjorie R. Post
in Massapequa, SyossetWoodbury, Bethpage, and Plainview-Old Bethpage, will see some enhancements as we prepare for the swimming season,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Upgrades will include new chairs throughout all facilities, both lounge chairs and stackable dining chairs.” The Councilwoman further noted that all community pool locations will be receiving new accessories to assist those looking to shield from the sun. “All pool decks will be receiving 50x20 foot cantilever sun shades, which will allow those
looking for a break from the sun to enjoy some relaxing time in one of our new lounge chairs,” Councilwoman Johnson said. Councilwoman Johnson noted that pools will be open from June 24th through Labor Day. Registration for season memberships is currently underway. Starting June 24, registration will take place during normal hours of operation. Scientists Earn Gold Congratulations to Syosset High School seniors Dahyun Park and Jordan Sanford, who won a gold medal in the Environment: Management and Pollution category at the International Sustainable World Engineering Energy Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP!) held in Houston, Texas. Dahyun (who also goes by “Elle”) and Jordan worked together to explore the use of microbial fuel cells for wastewater treatment. They worked in school and from home under the direction of Science Research Facilitator
Veronica Ade. In addition to being selected as finalists for I-SWEEEP, they were both named semifinalists in this year’s Siemens Foundation Competition for Math, Science and Technology for this research project. “Elle and Jordan are [two] of the most dedicated students in the research program,” said Ade. “They spent their entire junior and senior year working on this project and are passionate about the impacts their novel microbial fuel cell can have on the environment. They have worked hard and achieved so
much already. I look forward to the accomplishments they will have in college and beyond.” For the past 10 years, I-SWEEEP! has inspired students to develop projects to help preserve Earth’s resources and create a sustainable planet for everyone. No Place for Hate Congratulations to the students and staff at Harry B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset as it has been named a “No Place for Hate” school by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). ADL’s No Place for Hate initiative identifies schools and communities who demonstrate a longterm commitment to combating bias, bullying and hatred while leading initiatives for creating and maintaining a positive climate. Spearheaded
by HBT’s PAL (Peers as Leaders) and Buddy Club, the school’s efforts included a Multicultural Week and Expo held in January to promote various cultures, “Cardio for Character Walk” and ”Steps Against Bullying” events to promote good health and acceptance and a cyber-bullying program titled “Don’t Press Send.” Members of the club recently attended a special ceremony held at New York University to honor the 127 No Place for
Hate schools in New York State, where they received a banner to display in the school as a source of pride and reminder of the importance of the initiative. “It was a very special ceremony,” said PAL and Buddy Club co-adviser Randi Bloom. “We are very proud to be a part of this.” This is the first year HBT has participated in ADL’s campaign.

Students at Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District received an interactive lesson about properties related to water, acids, bases and solutions as part of a program hosted by a Mad Science of Long
Island enrichment group scientist. Students asked questions, posed hypotheses and also learned about the importance of safety in science. The program, which featured several opportunities for

Local legislators recently attended the Morgan Center program’s Graduation Ceremony held at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Hicksville Athletic Center, where the organization is based locally. Everyone on hand congratulated the young graduates and their parents on this important milestone. The Morgan Center
provides preschool age children battling cancer the opportunity to learn and socialize in a safe environment. Children undergoing chemotherapy treatment have a suppressed immune system. The Morgan Center allows these children to interact in a setting where all of the parents
understand the inherent risks and the importance of a germ free environment and limiting exposures. The Morgan Center is provided free of charge to the children and their families. Tuition and expenses are completely supported by private donations and fundraising.

Taking the Top Spot Peter Ingenito of the Bethpage UFSD, who is studying Television Production and Digital Filmmaking at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, took the top spots at no less than three Long Island film festivals for his documentary “Behind The Glasses,” a courageous, autobiographical film about living with Asperger Syndrome. Peter earned First Place in the Locust Valley Film Festival, and Best in Show at both the Long Island Media Arts Show and First Exposure Film Festival. His film will also be
featured at the Long Island International Film Expo this July. “I focus on my strengths, rather than my weaknesses, to keep myself motivated,” Peter stated in his awardwinning documentary. “I never really looked at myself as a person with a disability. I am someone who may struggle more than others, but at the same time, it’s a strength for me.” “I know Peter has Asperger’s, I know it’s been diagnosed, but when I look at my son I don’t see somebody with Asperger’s,” Peter’s father said in the
