New York Health Welcomes Family Medicine Physician Mahendra Shah, MD
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board dedicated a Bethpage park on Crestline Avenue in honor of fallen FDNY Firefighter William N. Tolley and all first responders. Firefighter Tolley died in the line of duty on April 20, 2017 from injuries he sustained while fighting a second-alarm fire in Ridgewood, Queens. “Firefighter Tolley was loved and respected by his family, our residents and his brothers and
sisters in the fire service,” said Supervisor Saladino. “He had a unique ability to connect with people and felt a tremendous sense of duty as a firefighter to stand up for those in need. He excelled as a firefighter, a husband and father and as a musician as well. There were many facets to William and his remarkable legacy will be forever remembered. Together, we are proud to rename this park in his memory while also paying respect to all first responders for
the job they do protecting our communities and lives.” With the support of the Fire and Drums Foundation, a notfor-profit organization founded by William Tolley’s brother, Robert, the Town of Oyster Bay refurbished the park, including a new basketball court, entrance pathways, fencing, a lighted flagpole and new playground equipment. One of the unique additions to the playground is a fire engine for youngsters to climb on and play on. It
was donated by the Fire and Drums Foundation to honor firefighters and perhaps inspire young people to become a first responder themselves. The charity provides support to the families of First Responders and Military members. “William was and always will be a true American hero,” added Supervisor Saladino. “This parklet dedication symbolizes the Town of Oyster Bay’s vast appreciation for Firefighter Tolley and all of our brave first

Later in life, William purchased his house in his hometown with his wife, Marie, and his daughter, Isabella. William served as an FDNY firefighter with Ladder Company 135 and was a 14-year veteran of the department. He also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Hicksville Fire Department, having served during 9/11, and most recently with the Bethpage Fire Department.

To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Town Councilman Tom Hand invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Monday, June 21st from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway
in Hicksville. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Residents can save lives by donating blood this June at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips
POW/MIA CHAIR DEDICATION - On Sunday, May 30th, 2021, a memorial service was held at Huntington Town Hall, for veterans and the dedication of the POW/ MIA chair that was purchased and donated by Dr. Cynthia Paulis to a gold star mom Charlee Miller whose son was killed 15 years ago in Afghanistan. Ms. Miller is the director of The Art League in Dix Hills. Her son Col. Joseph Fenty was killed in a helicopter accident and never got to meet his newborn who was 20 days old. The chair will be on display permanently at The Art League in Dix Hills. The chair created by the Hussey Seating Company, honors all veterans who served, those that died, and those that are missing during wartime.
As vaccinated New Yorkers begin to gather for nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their outdoor grills. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell. “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social
distancing rules to keep their families, and guests, safe.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Gas grills were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below: Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors; The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches;
Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area; Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill; Never leave your grill unattended while in use; Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it; Always use foodapproved fire starters for wood grills and smokers. be holding a Line Dance event on the farm itself. For only $25/person, you can join Skip and the Country Rhythms Team for a fun afternoon of dancing, food and a raffle. All dances will be taught; you can arrive as early as 1:30 PM and dancing starts at 2 PM. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM starting June 12th running through October 10th! You will find organically-grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and it’s mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. Additionally, they suggest volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipients can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. Currently, this farm has various upcoming community events planned! On June 13th and September 12th, they will

World War II Weekend To Include A Visit From The Allies’ “Big Three” With Living Historians Representing FDR, Churchill, And Stalin “The Big Three” of World War II will make an appearance at this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend, June 19th and 20th, at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island. Beside an operational array of Allied and enemy armor, interpreters who portray President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Britain’s Winston Churchill, and Soviet Russia’s Stalin will greet visitors and remind them of the extraordinary alliance that confronted and defeated Nazi Germany. Members of the Long Island Living History Association will also present uniforms, tactics, and weapons of that era. Armor Museum president and founder Lawrence Kadish, observed, “Our continuing
mission at the Armor Museum is to bring history to life so that a new generation of Americans understand that the precious gift of freedom was bought and paid for by the sacrifice of those who came before us.” Armor Museum trustee, former U.S. Congressman Peter King, stated, “Living history has become an essential part of keeping our nation’s heritage alive and relevant at a time when online platforms have created a virtual alternative universe for too many of our young people. To see these vehicles operate in the field opens a journey of study and education for many of our visitors.” The Armor Museum’s Senior Trustee, Michael Sapraicone, noted, “World War II Weekend is designed to remind Long Islanders that they have heroes in their families. That medal in
the back of the dresser? It was for your grandfather’s valor. That fading honorable discharge certificate? It was won on a far off battlefield. And the freedoms we enjoy? That’s the legacy they have left all of us.” Families will be admitted only with pre-reservation e-tickets
purchased on a first come – first served basis. Admission fees will be posted and available by going on line at https://www. oldbethpagevillagerestoration. org/tickets Families can bring lawn chairs to designated areas, masked, and separated from other visitors as

Virtual Thyroid Cancer Support Group ThyCa Long Island, a support group for thyroid cancer survivors, is affiliated with ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc.; a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization of thyroid cancer survivors, family members, and health care professionals. We are dedicated to support, education, and communication for thyroid cancer survivors, their families and friends. We also
sponsor Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, yearround awareness activities, and thyroid cancer research fundraising and research grants. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.
