Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island.

One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower is committed to ﬁnding safe and nurturing homes for children and young adults that are unable to remain home with their families because they believe every child should have guidance, stability and love.

Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care. Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to ﬁnd relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This

For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County. Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certiﬁcation to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home. In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reuniﬁcation or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child. Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

Little Flower was founded in 1929 by Catholic priest Monsignor Bernard Quinn who came to Wading River, Long Island, looking for a haven for the youth of his parish in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, that were excluded from programs and services at the time. The annual James C. Metzger Leadership Award for Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse was presented to one player on each of the eight teams that competed in the finals of the 2022 Section VIII Nassau County high school boys’ lacrosse championships. Each award recipient reflected the tenacity, honesty, commitment and positive attitude required in Nassau lacrosse. Each player also possessed the ability to inspire others on and off the field. One of the eight award recipients is senior defenseman Spencer

Newman of Syosset High School. The lacrosse championships were held on Tuesday-Thursday, May 31-June 2, at Hofstra University. In the Class A championship game, Paul D. Schreiber Senior High School in Port Washington defeated Syosset 9-8. The awards were presented by 1970s Long Island lacrosse stars James C. Metzger and Vincent J. Sombrotto. A three-sport athlete at Half Hollow Hills East in Dix Hills, Metzger received the 1977 Lt. Ray Enners Award for outstanding Suffolk

County lacrosse player when he scored 102 points and received All-American honors. An All-American lacrosse player at Hofstra University, Metzger is the founder and chairman of Whitmore – The Agency, an insurance and financial services firm in Garden City. Sombrotto attended Chaminade High School in Mineola and was a Hofstra University All-American midfielder. He was named to the 1982 All-World Team and is a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He is a senior vice president at Whitmore.

The American Cancer Society Honors Kim Poulos Lieberz Of KGI Design Group At Annual Red, White, And Blue Summer Bash

During the Monday, May 23 meeting of the full Nassau County Legislature at the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage, legislators voted unanimously to allocate $250,000 of American Rescue Plan Act to establish a new paid scholarship program for local college students. Under the County program, interns will be employed by the Office of the County Executive and will be assigned to a department within

the Nassau County government. The goal is to provide students with opportunities to gain hands-on experience and learn directly from highranking Nassau County government leaders. The program will be open to college students who are residents of Nassau County and/or students who are enrolled in colleges or universities located in Nassau County. “I am glad that Nassau County has taken steps toward utilizing County

government to enrich the educational opportunities available to local college students and create a valuable opportunity for them to earn while they learn,” said Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggiWhitton (D - Glen Cove) said. “I look forward to the creation of a successful, merit-based program that empowers participants to thrive as they complete their studies and pursue their passions in the workplace.”

children to a new sport, and potentially discover a new passion!” The Summer 2022 Youth Tennis Program is designed to teach kids the fundamentals of tennis in a structured setting, as well as help improve individual skills. No prior experience is necessary, but participants must bring their own rackets (all other equipment will be provided). Registration for all sessions in this program will begin on Wednesday, June 15 from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM at Ellsworth W. Allen Park located at 45 Motor Avenue, Farmingdale. After this date, registration will be walk in only at Town Hall South in Massapequa. 5 & 6 year olds can choose between Session 1, which meets from 4 PM - 4:50 PM, and Session 2, which meets from 5 PM - 5:50 PM. 7 & 8

year olds can choose between Session 1, which meets from 6 PM - 6:50 PM, and Session 2, which meets from 7 PM - 7:50 PM. On Mondays & Wednesdays, clinics will take place at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, and on Tuesdays & Thursdays, they’ll take place at Allen Park. Town To Host Collection Drive On World Blood Donor Day In recognition of World Blood Donor Day and in an effort to help hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, June 14th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our

blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a

voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen compliments of Councilwoman Laura Maier. Councilman Labriola added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D Plainview) celebrated the achievements of Nassau Community College’s newest graduates during the College’s 62nd commencement ceremony on Wednesday, May 25. Held at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the Class of 2022 was led by Valedictorian Tzivia Miller. “Seeing the Coliseum filled with graduates filled my heart with pride for all that the Class of 2022 has accomplished and profound excitement for what the future holds for them,” Legislator Drucker said. “I wish them all tremendous success and the best of luck as they embark upon the next chapter of their lives.” Legislator Drucker previously served on the Nassau Community College Board of Trustees from late 2012 until being elected to the Nassau County Legislature in Legislator Drucker, pictured with Nassau Community December 2016.
