Honoring Heroes In commemoration of Memorial Day, Hicksville Public Schools hosted a variety of activities to honor the men and women in the armed services who made the ultimate sacrifice for America. At East Street Elementary

School, students and staff gathered on the front lawn to sing patriotic songs and plant American flags. With parents and community members also in attendance, students also spoke about what Memorial Day means to

them. At Hicksville Middle School, the Student Council planted American Flags on the perimeter of the front lawn under the direction of advisers Janice Fitzgerald and Jennifer Presti.

Nominations are currently being sought for the Town of Oyster Bay’s Veterans Volunteer Awards, which will take place prior to the Town’s Annual “Salute to America” on Tuesday, July 11th, at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa, according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “If you know of a veteran who deserves special recognition for their continuing advocacy or exemplary community service, or an individual who has staunchly supported veterans, please submit a completed nomination form to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth

Services no later than June 20th,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Forms are available by calling the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community and Youth Services at 516.797.7925 or downloaded on the homepage of the Town’s Website at www. oysterbaytown.com.” Nominations are being accepted in three different recognitions, a Lifetime Achievement Award, a Volunteer of the Year Award and the Non-Veteran (Friend of Veterans) Volunteer of the Year Award. Supervisor Saladino noted that “Salute to America,” a patriotic evening of top flight musical talent and fireworks, is a thank you

to all of our veterans and active military for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as Americans. “The program stands as an important reminder that their sacrifices are remembered and greatly appreciated,” Supervisor Saladino said. “It also provides the ideal backdrop to recognize veterans and individuals who continue to actively serve in the community and advocate for issues and concerns relative to veterans. I hope you will consider submitting a nomination of an individual who deserves special recognition for their continued exemplary efforts in the veteran community.”

Dance Honor Society Inductions Sabrina Greig, Jordan LaCroix and Gabrielle McGlynn of the Bethpage UFSD - all of whom study dance at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) - were inducted as inaugural members of the LIHSA chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA). They were recognized not only for their skill on the dance floor, but also for their academic achievements and leadership. As founding members, Sabrina, Jordan and Gabrielle were directly involved in the

development of the new NHSDA chapter, electing the founding officers and helping to plan the induction ceremony. “These are highachieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,” said Dina Denis-Paolucci, Head of the LIHSA Dance Department, who spearheaded the efforts to achieve this national recognition for her students. “I’m really proud of all of you,” she told her students at the induction ceremony. “This is a huge

accomplishment for our program.” “Whether in class or on stage, LIHSA dancers prove every time how talented and technically advanced they are,” Chapter President Jared Stern said of his fellow NHSDA members. “They spend hours training, performing and perfecting their craft. We as dancers must have much more than just technical excellence and pretty lines. We use our art form to voice our opinions and share our visions with the world.”

APPRECIATION AWARD - David Ng, MD, FAAEM, associate director of the emergency department at the Nassau University Medical Center, was given the EMS Appreciation Award on May 21st, at the East Meadow Fire Department (EMFD). The committee selected Dr. Ng for the excellent care and follow up he provided to the patients brought to the NUMC Emergency Department. He was also presented with citations from NC Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves and Assemblyman Thomas Mckevitt.

Taking the Reins

Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino handed over the reins to a student for a day as part of Students in Government Day 2017, on Monday, May 15th, while 12 other students from throughout the township were sworn in as department heads and called into duty during a mock severe weather scenario. “Well over four years have passed since Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on communities throughout the Town of Hempstead, but the path of destruction is still evident with homes being repaired and our beaches undergoing a major restoration project in time for the summer season,” stated Supervisor Santino. “As Hurricane season is about to commence yet again, this program is a great opportunity for 11th

grade government students to experience first-hand how government responds during times of crisis.” By working through a mock hurricane scenario, the students learned how closely all town departments have to work together in order to best serve the residents in an emergency. The scenario featured a hurricane headed straight for Long Island. Students interacted in their various roles to protect the safety and wellbeing of town residents in the midst of the weather crisis. The real department heads guided them throughout the day. Under the umbrella, called spell I came to know you rather well. As your catching words came my way Under the umbrella I began to sway.

I actually feel the thoughts of people dear to me Without being told, their deepest concerns I see. Spells are vibrant declarations of a nameless force They have in a chosen media their source. Onto my open umbrella those spells often fall Slowly one by one to the ground they roll. I don’t want them to get me into their grip I am afraid that into obsession I might slip. Yet, at times I succumb and those powers use I do with you, infatuation is my excuse! Any and all caution is thrown out to hell I close the umbrella and submit to the spell!

A Time to Remember

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago. Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world. Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,

sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age. Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny flowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.” I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.

There was something elegant in the simplicity. Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course. I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end. Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.

Thanks to the efforts of Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson and Kaye Weninger, who heads up Operation Democracy in Locust Valley, the Town of Oyster Bay flag will continue to be proudly flown in Sainte-MèreÉglise of France. In 1947, citizens of Locust Valley, New York made history by founding Operation Democracy and adopting the French

town of Sainte-MèreÉglise as a sister city, contributing to its post WWII reconstruction. Hearing that the city’s Town of Oyster Bay flag became worn, Councilwoman Johnson secured two new flags and presented them to Kaye Weninger, who will then personally present them to Mayor Jean Quétier of Sainte-Mère-Église of France.

“The flag stands as an important symbol of the common historical thread Locust Valley shares with Sainte-MèreÉglise as sister cities,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It’s an honor to promote that common bond. Even though we are separated by many miles of ocean, it is always comforting to know that we are near to their hearts and united in purpose.”

PLANE NEWS - At the Hicksville Historical Society’s May 23rd meeting at the Hicksville Public Library, Hicksville Historian James Janis presented the program “Plane News: Grumman and Hicksville during World War II.” To a crowd of fifty attendees, Janis shared the fruits of his Grumman research, revealing much heretofore unknown knowledge about Hicksville and its residents from 1942-1945. He also shared the secrets of historical research, which was discovering an archive of the Grumman newspaper, Plane News.

Dance students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset had the opportunity to learn from one of the greats when famed choreographer and lead Paul Taylor Dancer Michael Trusnovec, an alumnus of the school, came back to teach a Master Class. “I love sharing my love of Paul Taylor’s work,” said Trusnovec of the class of 1992. “These students are being exposed to something they may never have known. I bring with me an example of what’s possible for them.” The Master Class program is part of the

school’s ongoing mission to provide its dance students with inside looks at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen field. Trusnovec who hails from Yaphank, began dancing at age six. In 1992, he was honored by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and was named one of only 20 Presidential Scholar in the Arts. In 1996, he received a BFA in Dance Performance from SMU in Dallas, Texas, dancing in the varied works of Anna Sokolow, Frederic Ashton, Bob Fosse, George Balanchine, Martha

Graham and Paul Taylor. A dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company since 1998, Trusnovec originated roles in the critically acclaimed Banquet of Vultures and Beloved Renegade, and performing principal roles in such works as Arden Court, Company B, Last Look, Speaking in Tongues, and Esplanade. He teaches Master Classes in the Taylor style around the world. In 2006, he was the proud recipient of a New York Dance and Performance Award (“Bessie”) for his Body of Work during the 2005-06 season.

Six students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech took top honors at the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse earlier this spring. Students participated in a series of timed events related to their courses of study at Barry Tech, as well as in competitions in leadership and professional development. Barry Tech boasts two first-place winners in the Actions Skills category. They are Veterinary Science students Victoria Baltrus (North Shore CSD) and Samantha Miller (East Meadow UFSD). Students who earn first place at the state conference have the opportunity to move on to the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY this June. Taking second place in the American Spirit competition were Medical

Digital Design student Melissa Guillen (Hempstead UFSD) took third in the state for Pin Design. Angeline earned the National Officer position by serving as an exemplary model of SkillsUSA’s core traits: responsibility, communication, teamwork and leadership. Considerable effort goes into qualifying for the annual SkillsUSA competition. All Barry Tech students have a double workload, completing not only their Barry Tech assignments, but also satisfying full courses

of study at their home schools. Add to that the intensive training that it takes to earn the privilege of competing in SkillsUSA, and it becomes clear how tirelessly these students work. The competition is part of the SkillsUSA mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders working together to prepare high school and college students to become leaders in the business world. The program helps establish industry standards for jobskill training and instills a respect for community service in its participants. The U.S. Department of Labor recognizes SkillsUSA as a “successful model of an employer-driven youth development program.”

Amidst the pomp and circumstance of a full color guard, Northwell Health’s leadership gathered with veterans, health system leadership and high-ranking military officials to honor members of the military, recognize their sacrifice and hear from a retired Marine who lost a leg while serving in Afghanistan. Dan Lasko, a U.S. Marine veteran who worked with Northwell innovators and scientists to create “The Fin” prosthetic, shared his personal story of loss and triumph. Cpl. Lasko, who “raised his right hand to serve” on September 10, 2001, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2004. Less than one month after arriving in country, Cpl. Lasko’s vehicle was hit by two improvised explosive devices. Cpl. Lasko survived the attack, but the resulting wounds meant a below-theknee amputation of his left leg “Back in 2005, I discovered that sports played a huge part in my recovery,” said Cpl. Lasko. “I was able to run and play sports, but I realized that I needed an aqua prosthetic. It’s difficult to have one leg for walking and then have to change legs to enter the water. I wanted one leg that would allow me to walk, enter the water smoothly, and then propel myself forward.” When he learned that Northwell was looking for a veteran who would help with the design of a prosthetic device to meet these requirements, Cpl. Lasko volunteered for service. Working with Northwell Ventures, 3D printing researcher Todd Goldstein, PhD, and two Long Island companies, Eschen Prosthetic and Orthotic Laboratories and CPC (Composite Protyping Center), “The Fin” was developed – and Cpl. Lasko is delighted. His greatest pleasure, he said, is teaching his two young sons how to swim and to play with them in the water.

“I don’t want my disabilities to hold my kids back from enjoying their lives,” he said. Northwell Health has worked tirelessly to address the issues facing returning veterans and their families for more than a decade, serving as both a treatment provider for veterans and their families, and as a major employer of veterans that recognizes the value they bring to their jobs. Juan Serrano, director of Northwell’s Office of Military

and Veterans’ Liaison Services and a fellow veteran of foreign conflict, spoke to the importance of providing tangible commitments to those who serve. “Northwell has made a pledge to veterans that we take very seriously,” said Mr. Serrano. “Whether it’s helping them get back to work, learning important job training skills, or finding the right medical or behavioral health help, our message is clear – no veteran should ever be left behind. We take this very seriously, and we will continue to support our military heroes.” As part of that ongoing pledge, for the seventh consecutive year, Northwell President and CEO Michael J. Dowling presented two veterans with checks

representing the difference between their military pay and the regular salaries they would have received had they not taken military leave from their jobs at Northwell Health. Recipients were: Perry Alexander, of the Bronx, a clinical lab technician at Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park who was a logistic specialist in the Marines for three years, and Jovani Vega, of Queens Village, a patient care associate at LIJ who spent two years as an MP in the US Army. The initiative recognizes the financial sacrifice veterans and their families make and helps returning veterans reintegrate to civilian life. Since the program’s inception, Northwell employees deployed to military service have received financial rewards totaling more than $1.6 million. Also on hand to recognize Northwell’s commitment to the health and welfare of returning veterans were: Col. James McDonough, managing director of the Institute for Veterans and Military Families; and Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson, deputy chief of staff, US Army. Mr. Dowling acknowledged the hard work and sacrifices made by our military personnel and their loved ones. “I don’t think we do enough for veterans,” he said. “And, I don’t think we appreciate their sacrifices enough. They serve as an example to all of us, and that is to show the same level of compassion and teamwork as they do.” By way of illustrating Northwell’s commitment to veterans, Mr. Dowling pointed out that the health system hired 220 veterans in 2015; that number increased to 417 in 2016. “We hope to have that number jump to 1,000 very soon,” he added. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Lenzu instructed the students to listen to the choreography she has created, but to interpret it for themselves. “I love the diversity of the students here,” she said of the LIHSA dance students. “Some are shy, some more outgoing. I help them find their voices. It’s a challenge for the teacher.” Her choreography has been commissioned all over the world for opera, TV programs, theatre productions and by many dance companies. She founded her own dance school, L’Atelier Centro Creativo de Danza, in 1994 in Argentina, and

has maintained an active teaching career ever since. She currently conducts classes at Peridance Capezio Center, Wagner College and Lehman College. She has written for various dance and arts magazines, and published her first book in 2013, entitled Unveiling Motion and Emotion. The book contains writings in Spanish and English on the importance of dance, community, choreography, and dance pedagogy. “This was an exciting class, because it helped the students discover another character,” said LIHSA dance teacher Dina Denis Paolucci. “It’s not just dancing - there’s a deeper meaning to their movements. Ms. Lenzu is a creative being.”

As the first violinist of the Vega Quartet, now in their eleventh season as quartet-in-residence at Emory University, Fayette offered the students an inside look into the life of a professional musician. As part of Nassau BOCES master class program, Fayette performed with the students, lead them in a lesson, provide expert critique and answer their questions about breaking

The school’s master class program continues to provide students with valuable insight from professionals in the music industry, part of LISHA’s ongoing mission to offer its passionate arts students real-world experience and introduce them to mentors within their chosen fields. Fayette has been praised by the New York Times and the Boston Globe. Live a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic

conditions, and not smoking can lower your risk of eye disease. Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease, since many are hereditary. Use protective eyewear. Prevent eye injuries when doing chores around the house, playing sports, or working on the job. Wear safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, or eye guards that are made of polycarbonate. Talk to your eye care provider about the appropriate type of protective eyewear for your needs.

Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase your risk for getting an eye disease like cataract or age-related macular degeneration, which is a progressive eye disease leading to blindness. When purchasing sunglasses, look for those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation.
