NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently partnered with National Grid to host a Memorial Day education event for 100 local students from Roosevelt Middle School at the Veterans Memorial located on the plaza of NYCB LIVE. With the support of local Long Island veterans and active duty military, the Roosevelt Middle School students had the opportunity to learn about the branches of the military and Long Island’s service contributions to the United States armed forces. The Memorial Day education event was a part of the venue’s new community platform NYCB LIVE Cares, which harnesses the power of sports and entertainment

Empty Bowls As part of its ongoing commitment to altruism, the Hicksville High School National Art Honor Society participated in Empty Bowls, a national project designed to raise funds to benefit local food pantries. Students began
preparing for the event, held on May 31st, in May of last year by painting bowls that would be distributed to individuals who made a donation to the pantries. In addition to the hand-painted bowls, donors also received a
small bowl of soup or cup of coffee provided by local businesses attending the event. The school district thanks the local businesses that supported the Empty Bowls project and event.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino (front row third from left) recently joined with his colleagues on the Town Board in recognizing William M. Gouse Jr. VFW Post No. 3211 of Hicksville in honor of Memorial Day. Founded in 1935, Post No. 3211 supports programs to increase awareness of the sacrifices of America’s veterans, promotes citizenship, education, volunteerism
and positive youth programs. The VFW also facilitates aid for veterans and their families in need of medical, rehabilitative, educational and employment services. Over the last 83 years, members of the Post have participated in numerous historical commemorative events and involved themselves in countless charitable endeavors to benefit veterans and the community.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this nonprofit that believes mental health is
as important as physical health at 631.226.3900. They strive to ensure that all their local needs and voices are not only heard, but also recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups and educational organizations in our region! If you are interested in volunteering with MHAW, you can. Volunteer opportunities are available each Saturday at their Chemical Free Garden in Ronkonkoma. The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden! Interested in becoming a sponsor or vendor? MHAW has an upcoming event, which has sponsorship and vendor opportunities available! This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. As the NYS Mentoring Program wraps up the 2017-2018 school year, they are starting to work on their Fall programs. Jumping into June carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed. The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that
incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.

The Dynamics Of Leadership following: In business, there are two types of capital: 1.) Working Capital (Cash): Used by a business to fund company growth and meet cash flow needs. 2) Human Capital: The monetary value of all goods and services produced by all employees of the company. Key Leadership Point: A company that is primarily devoted to only working capital and ignoring the value of its employees will never make it in today’s economic climate. Every author who writes on leadership seems to have their favorite list of “dos & don’ts.” Here is mine: MUST DO Effective immediately, stop using the word “I” and substitute the word “WE.” You never express your own opinion, inferring that “it’s my way or the highway!” It’s now “WE” will do this together. By using this simple method, you will immediately starting building a trust level, which is so important for any leader. Trust is the base foundation for any relationship. It is built up slowly over time, never rushed. Unfortunately, once trust is broken, in the majority of cases, it will never regain its former level. All of this is especially true in leadership situations. Any

type of leader must have the full confidence and trust of the people he/she leads. As an example, the leader should be able to perform any of the tasks assigned to others. Moving into the world of interpersonal relationships, a couple who is married or living together must have the full trust of the other 24/7. Once this trust is shattered, the end result is usually separation or eventually divorce. Another key aid in leadership is to always maintain a positive attitude. Let’s face it, there will be days when everything seems to be going wrong, or when careful planning seems to not pay off. Remember, you are the leader, and the team looks to you for guidance and support. Never forget, that 70%-80% of the message you give is not what you say, but how you look when you say it! NEVER DO Being successful as a leader or a partner in marriage takes continual effort on a daily basis. It includes never taking the other person for granted or putting your personal interests ahead of another. Never take advantage of your position. Never make premature judgments about your team. Each person assigned to you is an individual with their own hopes and dreams.

Due to the importance of this topic, one can find a multitude of books, seminars and programs devoted to all aspects of leadership. This column will cover several important phases of the subject. At a later date, we may continue into other facets as well. First off, let’s define leadership. It is a process of influencing a group to achieve assigned goals. During my senior years of grad school, I wrote a thesis on leadership comparing how the U.S. Army developed leaders through the “90 Days Wonder Program,” which took participants from civilian to platoon leader in just three months time. This was then compared to the executive training program at RH Macy. Taking into account the deeper level of responsibility assigned to a platoon leader, much of the leadership skills remained somewhat the same. As just one example of the military training, every soldier knows of “the code.” During combat situations, the wounded were NEVER left on the battlefield. This was not recorded in any training manual, but strictly enforced by every trooper in the unit. Now let’s delve into the world of work. Any of my readers who majored in economics will soon recognize the

Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some

Dance students at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts had the pleasure of taking a class led by world-renowned dancer, choreographer and teacher Anabella Lenzu. The master class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide its dance students with an inside look at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen field. Originally from Argentina, Ms. Lenzu has more than 25 years of experience working in Argentina, Chile, Italy and the USA. As artistic director of Anabella Lenzu/ DanceDrama, she draws on her diverse background to create thought-provoking and socially-conscious dance theatre in the interest of improving the human condition. Ms. Lenzu instructed the students to listen to the choreography she has created, but to interpret it for themselves. “I love the diversity of the students here,” she said of the LIHSA dance students. “Some are shy, some more outgoing. I help them find their voices.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that nominations are currently being solicited for the Town’s Veterans Volunteer Awards, which will take place prior to the Annual “Salute to America” program on Tuesday, July 10th at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa at 7pm. Residents are invited to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a difference in our communities. “The Town is proud to recognize and honor amazing individuals who have helped to shape our communities for the better through their continuing advocacy and exemplary community service at our Salute to America concert each year,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I look forward to recognizing the efforts of outstanding individuals yet again this year, and I invite residents to submit applications
to nominate those who have impacted the lives of our veterans in an extraordinary way. Nominations are being accepted in three different categories of recognition: Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a veteran), Friend of Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a nonveteran), and Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to a veteran or a non-veteran). All entries must include a supporting narrative describing the nominee’s on-going veterans related activities, and all nominees must be Town residents. The fast food business is evolving, and more healthy choices are starting to become available. I had the pleasure of dining at a recently opened restaurant, CoreLife Eatery in Farmingdale, last week. They are focused on offering only the best foods and preparing them fresh on the spot. So many options to choose from - green bowls, grain bowls, broth bowls, freshly made beverages... the portions are hearty and satiating. You are able to make your own bowl or plate, choosing whichever fresh ingredients you prefer; you can also choose one of their creations from the menu, which can be customized as well. This place really appeals to me. I can choose all the components of my meal, and I know they are fresh, nutrient-dense ingredients, perfect for my needs. For my dining choice, I chose the Tuna Poke Fire Bowl. It comes with Ahi tuna
poke, avocado, pickled jalapeños, pickled red onions, pickled red cabbage, sesame Sriracha sprouts and forbidden purple rice ( I opted for romaine and spinach instead of the rice). I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. It was an extremely tasty dish that left me satisfied. I really am looking forward to my next meal at CoreLife Eatery. It truly is the next step in the evolution of dining. All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult. The pressure of finding a good option and ultimately settling for something familiar has happened far too often. I enjoy eating my homemade Lean & Green meal (3 servings of vegetables and 5-7 ounces of a lean protein), but trying to find that type of meal while dining out has been challenging. Most fast food restaurants focus on convenience and not nutrition. Nutrition is key to living a healthy lifestyle, and it’s something that I have changed significantly since losing 110 lbs.

Flags for Heroes As part of an annual Memorial Day tradition, the Student Council at Hicksville Middle School planted American flags along the edges of the front
lawn in honor of the men and women who have died while serving the nation. Under the guidance of advisers Janice Fitzgerald and Jennifer Presti, the
students learned the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by these heroes who made possible the freedoms they enjoy every day.
Choosing Kind The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Old Bethpage Elementary School PTA recently celebrated “Choose Kind Day” by designing and selling T-shirts in support of a nationwide anti-bullying initiative.
The “Choose Kind” T-shirts were worn by students in support of antibullying awareness. The school raised more than $500 in T-shirt sales with all proceeds benefitting the Anti-Defamation League and its “No Place for Hate” program. The Old Bethpage
Elementary School is a “No Place for Hate” school. “Choose Kind Day” provides students the opportunity to learn more about bullying and how to help create a safe and supportive learning environment.

Top of the Class The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School DECA team recently attended the DECA finals at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Sixtyone students had the opportunity to showcase their individual and teamoriented business skills in a rigorous competition testing their business knowledge and creativity. Five teams from Plainview-Old Bethpage were named finalists in
their respective events, with one team finishing in the top 10 out of nearly 200 competing teams. The top-10 finalist team members were Briana Garil, Rohan John, and Jungin Lee. Their project, “One Community CAN Make A Difference,” sought to bring awareness to the charitable organization, Long Island Cares. As part of the team’s awareness campaign, several events were held in the fall of 2017, including fundraising and the collection of
non-perishable foods at Plainview-Old Bethpage’s Homecoming, hosting a school-wide awareness week, and organizing a food drive at ShopRite. Overall, the team raised over $800 and 1,300 pounds of food to benefit Long Island Cares. DECA and other extracurricular activities offered at the District provide students with opportunities to explore their passions and excel both inside and outside of the classroom.

Looking to the Future The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School senior class recently celebrated its annual Decision Day for seniors. Members of the senior class gathered on the front patio of the high school to formally announce their respective plans following graduation and
celebrate their collective accomplishments. Seniors, donning the school colors of where they will spend the next years of their education, posed for pictures in front of the school’s Decision Tree, which holds each student’s name and plans for the future. Senior Decision Day is an event commemorating
the accomplishments of high school seniors while providing the graduating class with an opportunity to reflect on their time together as high school students. It also represents the final time the seniors will all be together as a class at John F. Kennedy High School.

Historical Marker to be Unveiled club, the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, said, "Over the last few years the press club has worked hard to recognize places of historical significance in journalism on Long Island. This is yet another example of our board aiming to educate the public on local history. Thank you to the Sag Harbor Historical Society for all of their help with the project." Jack Youngs, president of the historical society, said, “To have the first newspaper that was printed on Long Island is what many locals proudly say is ‘A Feather in Our Cap.’ We had a newspaper eight years before Brooklyn.“ David Frothingham married Nancy Pell, a descendent of the prominent Pell family of Westchester. Several years later Frothingham became entangled in a claim
of slander by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The claim under the terms of the Alien and Sedition Acts stemmed from an article published in a Brooklyn newspaper, the Argus. Frothingham was found guilty and a fine of $100 was imposed, which a friend of his from Bridgehampton paid. A bond of $2,500 was set by the court to make sure he would never publish anything that could be considered libelous in the future. His inability to pay the bond resulted in him becoming a seaman to earn the money. No one knows the real story of his demise, but it is thought that he took ill off the coast of Africa and died. He was survived by his wife Nancy and daughter, Fanny, who would become Jack Youngs’ great-great grandmother. In the last three years,

A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island's first newspaper will be unveiled in Sag Harbor on June 6th. The marker will commemorate David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796. The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker is being installed by the Village of Sag Harbor. The dedication ceremony will be held across the street from the historical society office at 174 Main Street at 1 p.m. The marker is being installed in front of the property where Frothingham published the weekly newspaper. That’s why the American Heart Association - the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke - is seeking fresh ideas to impact health. The Innovation Challenge will provide funding to the best
creative solutions that increase healthy living behaviors, enhance the chain of survival and cultivate community transformation. Successful applicants are expected to use data and/or research to address issues such as inadequate housing, education, access to healthcare, and healthy food access. Candidates must complete an online application by the June 8th deadline.
Finalists are expected to be available to present their project before an audience at the Northeast Health Equity Consortium on June 28th, in Hartford, Conn. Three projects will be selected to receive an $8,000 award. An additional six projects will be invited to attend the conference and be recognized with a $1,000 award. The odds are stacked against low-income communities and
communities of color. That is why the American Heart Association is focused on improving social determinants of health, the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age that influence their health outcomes.
