Fire Island Dance Festival, the most anticipated event of the season on Fire Island, returns July 18th-20th, for its stunning 20th anniversary edition, featuring some of the most exciting and talkedabout dance companies in the industry. The festival, produced by and benefiting Dancers Responding to AIDS, is performed outdoors against the dazzling backdrop of the Great South Bay. Since the summer of 1995, Fire Island Dance Festival has grown to become the cultural and charitable event of the summer in Fire Island Pines, raising more than $3.3 million. Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, (who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair) but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering his services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC area.
There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you
guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.
It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

With every passing day, it becomes clearer that summer is almost in full swing. The beaches are filling with tourists, and the ferries are packed! As a strong Memorial Day Weekend predicted, this summer is turning out to be very busy. It is my fifth summer working at Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach. My first few shifts of the summer have been crazier than in years prior. We are already seeing a rush of people eager to take part in the festivities associated with a warm summer. Thus far, it seems as if the lull created by

This summer we’ll celebrate our collective achievements knowing that our expanded mission has allowed us to grow, while ensuring that
Hurricane Sandy has finally ended. People are returning to Fire Island slowly, but steadily. Only time will tell, but it looks as if we are experiencing a return to normalcy. Dolphins can already be seen swimming off the beach, and they are plentiful. As we kick off the summer, it is important to remember that Fire Island is not just a place to have a fun weekend; for many, like myself, Fire Island is the place that we call home. It is a place where memories have been formed. Each year, we see drunk people and other party animals who do
not take consideration for the environment or Fire Island as a whole. As an advocate for nature preservation, this truly saddens me. The state of both our beaches and our infrastructure has worsened in the past few years. Even though I’m just a kid, these changes are pretty obvious. Everywhere you look, degradation is found. As you head to the beach this summer, remember to pick up your garbage and protect wildlife. This will ensure that we will have great summers every year.

The excitement continues throughout the weekend with three Fire Island Dance Festival performances: the opening performance on Saturday, July 19th at 5 p.m. (open bar starting at 4 p.m.); sunset performance on Saturday, July 19th at 7 p.m. (open bar following); and closing performance on Sunday, July 20th at 5 p.m. (open bar following). Each performance features acclaimed and emerging dancers and dance companies. Leadership Supporters enjoy an elevated festival experience including the Leadership Event with cocktails on Friday, highly coveted tickets to the sunset performance on Saturday or priority seating at either 5 p.m. performance and prominent recognition in the harbor and throughout the Pines. Beginning May 24th, tickets also will be available in person on weekends in the Fire Island Pines Harbor. Leadership tickets start at $325. Individual tickets for the 5 p.m. performances are $125. For the past few years, ‘One Town, One Book,’ the well-established, national program that seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss reactions with friends and families has been a summertime fixture in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year, Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia excitedly announces that in the coming summer months, the program will return with a new focus, as ‘One Town, One Book: Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.’ “For the past few summers, the Town has sponsored One Town, One Book, with two clear goals in mind: to promote literacy, and to create a greater sense of community within our Town,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “In only a few short years, the program flourished and helped some to forge an enduring relationship with literature that may not have been there before. I am both proud and excited to have it return this summer and offer our younger residents the chance to more actively participate. This year we will be focusing the thrust of the program, affectionately referred to as ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.,’ to grade school and middle school children, in a summer long celebration of the works of Dr. Seuss, in honor of what would be his 110th birthday.”
Councilwoman Alesia went on to comment that in celebration of the works of Theodor Seuss Geisel, more commonly known as ‘Dr. Seuss,’ the program for this year’s Oyster Bay Reads, Jr. will be two-fold: a Town-wide poster contest based on one of the works of Dr. Seuss, as well as a ‘reading log’ chronicling a participants involvement in the program. “This year, to encourage the creativity of our youngest residents, Oyster Bay Reads, Jr. will be ongoing throughout the summer,” Councilwoman Alesia stated. “First, kids will be asked to create a poster based on one of Dr. Seuss’ works of their choosing, which can be submitted to their local library for display until winners are selected. Secondly, kids will be encouraged to read (or have their parents read to them or with them) a minimum of five Dr. Seuss books over the summer, and fill out a ‘reading log’ chronicling the works they’ve read.” The Councilwoman noted that reading logs, which can be downloaded from the Town’s website or the One Town, One Book Facebook page, should be returned to the Councilwoman either via email at ralesia@ oysterbay-ny.gov or by mail to Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia, Oyster Bay Town Hall, 54 Audrey Avenue,
Oyster Bay NY 11771. Councilwoman Alesia stated that program participants have the summer through August 15th to read the works of Dr. Seuss and submit logs and posters. In addition to these contests, each library within the Town has yet again enthusiastically joined up with the Town to sponsor ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.‘ events and programs at their branches, to tie in with this year’s selection. The Town-wide grand finale will take place on Thursday, August 21st at 7 p.m., at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, located at 999 Old Country Road, in Plainview. Councilwoman Alesia encourages residents to check back with the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com, as well as the official Facebook page of ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.’ for regularly updated information. “This year’s program is something that I truly feel will provoke the interest of our younger residents, as well as help foster a love of reading in them,” Councilwoman Alesia stated. “I urge any interested resident to contact my office at 516.624.6364, and my staff will gladly discuss more in-depth with you the ways to get involved with ‘Oyster Bay Reads, Jr.’ this summer.”

Spring Senior Luncheon The Hicksville Public School District’s decades long tradition of hosting local senior citizens for a special luncheon continued this year with a sit down reception held in the high school. The gathering featured a full course meal with live entertainment that spotlighted the talent being nurtured by the school system. The back of the room featured an art gallery displaying student work. “It is indeed our pleasure to have you here to acknowledge your contributions to our community,” said Superintendent of Schools
Maureen Bright as she thanked the 150 attendees for their ongoing support. “Hopefully you will see the contributions you made helping us maintain our tradition of providing a quality education for our students.” Student volunteers happily served beverages, salads, main courses and desserts to the delight of the attendees. The table centerpieces, made by art students, were offered as take-home prizes. The luncheon was an in-house event planned and executed by administrators, staff and student groups. The jazz ensemble,
directed by Jonathan Schmuel, opened the entertainment with three numbers including a snappy version of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “My Favorite Things.” In between meal courses guests enjoyed the musical styling of The High School Vocalists and the Saxophone Quartet. Senior Citizen Prom Senior citizens from the Hicksville community enjoyed music, dancing, food and retro-era ambience at the annual Senior Citizen Prom at Hicksville High School. Hosted by the high school’s student government and National Honor Society, the event allowed 75 seniors to kick back, mingle with old and
new friends over lunch and enjoy the music they danced to in their youth. The students served at the buffet stations, sold raffle tickets and danced with the seniors. A DJ played music from a variety of genres including ragtime, swing, country and early rock ‘n’ roll. With low lighting setting the mood, the gymnasium
was decorated to resemble the roaring 1920s Gatsby era, complete with period scenery of classic cars and dancing flappers. Tables adorned with floral centerpieces surrounded the dance floor. The students worked under the guidance of government club adviser Robert Mosz and Assistant Principal Robin Leek.
The Hicksville Middle School piano recital provided a platform for 23 talented students in grades six through eight to display their pianistic skills, with performances ranging from classics by Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin and J.S. Bach to more recent compositions from John Williams and British rock band Coldplay. Under the direction of music teacher Adam Nadler, the students demonstrated their developing skills and love for music in a 90-minute program held in the school auditorium.
