Truly Brave Performing a mashup of Cyndi Lauper’s song True Colors and Sara Bareilles’ Brave, students in Robbins Lane Elementary School’s chorus took part in a fundraising effort called Truly Brave. “Chorus Cares,” Robbins Lane’s charity arm of the chorus, teamed up with their Student Council, under the direction of Robin Kleinman, to raise money for childhood cancer research. News and talk show

host Hoda Kotb, a cancer survivor, created the fundraiser on crowdrise. com. Her idea was to combine Lauper and Bareilles’ song, which have a similar tempo and key, create a music video, and post it on her fundraising website. The Truly Brave movement has helped to raise more than $500,000 for childhood cancer research. Motivated to help, Robbins Lane teacher Dr. Catherine da Silva decided

to teach it to her chorus and place the song in the lineup of their spring concert on May 14th. The chorus performed the song during the school’s daytime showcase held in the Robbins Lane gymnasium on May 12th. The showcase also featured student musicians in the band, orchestra and jazz band. Chorus Cares and the Student Council helped raise $2,000 for the cause.

Seniors in Larry Portuese’s classes at Bethpage High School were asked to create and teach a maritime festival for third-graders from each of the district’s elementary schools. The maritime festival

contained six workshops, which the third-graders rotated through during a two-hour timeframe. Some of the activities included rope making, a scuba diving lecture, examining plankton, touch tanks that contained local,

fish dissections and fish painting. These activities served to excite the elementary students about the aquatic world, as well as foster a mentorship between the elementary and high school students.

The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

According to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes and residential settings. Therefore, if you are called on to give CPR in a cardiac emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute. To easily keep this rate, push the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’

Alive.” By empowering bystanders to perform Hands-Only CPR, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association works to strengthen the chain of survival – a five-step process that can mean the difference between life and death for someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Along the banks of the lagoon wreathed with arrowhead, spiker rush, pickerel weed and giant bullrush, I rest with book in hand and ponder my placid environs. Dwarf sailboats with colored masts soar along the water. A speeding motorboat tows a teenage lad on jet skis through the frothy wake, churning spumes of cool water against his sinewy body. A tawny middle age man perched in a kayak, outfitted in a life vest, navigates his oars right and left. Brilliant sunlight reflects the glossy orange hue of the boat’s hull. A young woman with auburn hair streaming behind her shoulders, in pink tank top and striped shorts, pedals a bicycle pathside. She waves hi to a senior man and wife strolling the road during their recreation walk.

A striking zebra long-wing butterfly propels about sea daisies and flyweed, flowers attracted to its scent. One observes billowy white and grey clouds set on a backdrop of light blue sky. Students from all ten of the Syosset School District’s school buildings gathered on May 8 to participate in the Interact Club’s “Cupcake Wars,” a cupcake decorating event with a sweet mission. The Cupcake Wars were organized as a fundraiser for the club’s 7 In 7 campaign, a mission to deliver life-saving heart surgeries to seven children on seven continents in seven days. The corrective surgeries are performed on children born with a congenital heart defect, an often-deadly malfunction of the heart valves. The declaration of cupcake war was one of the club’s final fundraisers before the scheduled heart surgeries. During the week of May 20th, Rina, a 9 year-

old girl from Kosovo, will receive her surgery at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn. Other recipients will receive their surgeries in their respective countries, including El Salvador, Jamaica, East Timor, the Philippines and Syria. During the Cupcake Wars, more than 200 teams, in age categories from elementary school to high school, competed for the best-decorated cupcakes in a timed event that used decorations for every sweet toothed taste imaginable. The wars took place in the Syosset High School gymnasium. While the judges, comprised of local restaurant owners, evaluated the finished products, the cupcake warriors and their supporters spilled over into

Also no stranger to success, salutatorian Joshua Rosenheck is a National Merit Commended Student and an AP Scholar. An athlete, he received the Nassau County Student Athlete Award and served as captain of the school’s cross-country, bowling and baseball teams this year. As a musician, he is a section leader in the jazz band

The Syosset High School ACT Club presented William Shakespeare’s Comedy The Taming of the Shrew for its spring drama to close out the main-stage season this year. Under the direction of Gene Connor, this production of The Taming of the Shrew featured a mild upgrade from Elizabethanera styling to Steampunk, as actors don bowler hats and motorcycle goggles. Hundreds of students joined members of Syosset High School’s Interact Club and school administrators on the football field at Syosset High School to welcome a 9 year-old girl from Kosovo that received a life-saving heart surgery, thanks to the club’s outreach efforts. The Syosset School community introduced Rina and her mother, along with Kosovo’s UN representative at the 50-yard line during a ceremony kicking off the seven days of surgeries slated to take place the week of May 18th all over the world. The operations are the culminating event of a year-long campaign

conducted by the Interact Club called “7 in 7,” representing the goal to pay for seven surgeries on seven children in seven continents in seven days. The surgeries are intended to correct children born with congenital heart defects, a fatal condition that claims the lives of thousands of children in underserved parts of the world. Playing off the club’s theme “Superman Saves Lives, So Do We,” the Interact students and their supporters donned blue Superman t-shirts and gathered around the perimeter of a massive Superman symbol painted midfield to represent their solidarity in the year’s

efforts. Rina was scheduled for surgery on May 20th; other children receiving the operation hail from every inhabited continent on earth. An eighth child, a Syrian refugee, will also receive the corrective surgery as the club’s “World Peace” recipient. The club has raised $60,000 in its campaign to pay for the surgeries and travel expenses for each child. Funds were raised through raffles, donations, an online campaign, a viral video campaign and a district-wide Cupcake CLEAN FRESH AIR DAY - Carol Meschkow of the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Wars event that drew in Island recently joined with Town of Oyster Bay legislators in declaring May 31st to be more than $12,000. “Wear White For Clean Fresh Air Day.” This day promotes awareness and educates children on the dangers of smoking.
