Bethel Hobbs Community Farm

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly
makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Town Launches New Outdoor Boot Camp to Shape Up for Summer

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced that residents who are interested in shaping up for summer can register for the Town’s new Outdoor Boot Camp course, which includes calisthenics and bodyweight exercises along with cardio and strength training. Classes
are offered to individuals 18 years of age or older outside the Hicksville Athletic Center. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “This new Outdoor Boot Camp course is designed to keep your body guessing and your face smiling. We will cover everything from basic circuit training to interval training, and the
format will change every week. Modifications are always offered to suit all participants, so all levels are welcome. Join us this summer to stay in shape.” The new Outdoor Booth Camp course is 10 weeks long, meeting on Wednesdays from 9am – 10am, beginning on July 7th. Bring your own hand weights, resistance
bands and exercise mat. Class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing measures. Masks must be worn as long as State mandates require such. Temperatures will be checked upon entry. The facility will be cleaned and sanitized daily, both before and after classes. Registration is available
at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville from 5:30pm to 9:30pm on Monday, June 7th, Tuesday, June 8th and Thursday, June 10th. The schedule is subject to change. If a session is cancelled, make-up day(s) will be attempted. Class fees are $60 for

Cynthia Cavallo, a third grade teacher at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District, was recently selected as the Nassau County winner in the fifth annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest. Ms. Cavallo was nominated by her student Angelina Kucica, who wrote an essay outlining the ways she feels supported and motivated by 1 her teacher. “Ms. Cavallo is a great teacher and always helps us learn new things,” Angelina said. “She’s really nice and understanding.” Ms. Cavallo reflected on the challenging year and how rewarding it is to be recognized. “I am incredibly honored and

so very humbled to have won this prestigious award,” she said. “In a school year when every day is a new challenge, the thought of even being 1 nominated is an honor. I am forever grateful for teaching in the most amazing school district with the best students and families.” The Above and “BEE”yond contest is being offered at Applebee’s restaurants in Long Island that are owned and operated by local franchisee Doherty Enterprises. The contest recognizes the top teachers from Nassau and Suffolk counties and rewards them with a $500 sponsorship check and an end-of-year class party.

National Fire Protection Association Says Use Caution When Using Grills
BETHPAGE CELEBRATES LONG ISLAND’S MARITIME CULTURE Elementary schools in the Bethpage School District celebrated Long Island’s maritime culture during the district’s annual Maritime Festival. For two decades, high school forensics teacher Larry Portuese has organized the interactive and educational event. Seniors in Mr. Portuese’s class are trained to guide the elementary school students through a variety of activities, such interacting with sea creatures, demonstrations of fishing skills and lessons about the local marine life. According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated
appliances. WebMD advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the
affected area with cold water or a cold compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce the return of drive-in movies this summer at various Town facilities in July and August. However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drivein movie theater. The drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself. While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space. Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same. “A drive-in movie is the ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions,” says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager

Town To Offer Swim Program Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier recently announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will offer a swim program this summer at outdoor pools located in SyossetWoodbury Community Park and Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. “Get ready to dive into Oyster Bay Town pools this summer and improve your stroke,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are proud to offer this swim program to children that reside in the Town of Oyster Bay. Swim programs like this really bring the community together and are an integral part in the training of our young swimmers for the future.” Town of Oyster Bay
residents aged 6 to 16 are eligible to register for the swim program. Workouts will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, from 9:30am to 10:30am beginning Wednesday, July 7th and ending on Friday, August 13th. If a session is cancelled, make-up day(s) will be attempted. Registration must be postmarked by June 30th. Councilwoman Maier stated, “Many of our young people lost the ability to jump into the pool and improve their swim skills during the pandemic due to restrictions in place at the time. Now, with the proper safety protocols in place, we’re happy to offer this swim program and the chance for young people to exercise while improving their strength, endurance,
flexibility, balance and more!” Program fees (checks or money orders only) are $35 per swimmer for season pass holders, and a $10 discount is offered for each additional swimmer in the same family. For residents without a season pass, the program fee is $50 per swimmer. A $15 discount is offered for each additional swimmer in families without a season pass. Proof of residency/age required when registering, with TOB residents given first preference.
