Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

The Saga of Squeegee Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to ﬂy solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

The Hicksville Public Schools’ 2016-2017 budget has passed, with a total of 1,685 ballots cast and a passage rate of 75.91 percent. Thank you to the Hicksville community and congratulations to the newly elected trustees, Carla Hoene and Lynda Parmely. The budget voting results are as follows: Yes – 1,279 No – 406 Proposition 2 was approved, giving the

district the ability to create a capital reserve fund in the ultimate amount of $2.65 million. Also approved was Proposition 3, sending $60,000 to the Hicksville Gregory Museum for educational services. “On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to express our appreciation to the residents of Hicksville and all of the organizations and community groups that supported the budget,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso.

Town Beaches Open Residents eager to enjoy the Town of Oyster Bay’s beautiful beaches at Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park will be pleased to learn that these Town beaches are now open! The four Town beaches will be open on weekends and holidays for residents to enjoy beginning May 28th. From Saturday, June 25th, onwards, all Town beaches will be open for the season seven days a week and will close on Labor Day, Monday September 5th.” Beach lovers can get an early start on enjoying the magnificent Town facilities during the weekend before they open full time for the summer. The early sale of beach stickers will continue to be available weekdays through Friday, June 24th ONLY at Tobay Beach (from

9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), John J. Burns Town Park (from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. & 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park (from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.). Pool Registration Underway

Park Reopened The Town of Oyster Bay will reopen the cordoned off areas of Bethpage Community Park, including the tennis courts, playground, and pool area (the pool will reopen as originally scheduled). The Town received confirmation from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) that they have completed a thorough evaluation of data from previous site investigations and removal actions in and adjacent to the park, and see no reason that any publicly accessible areas remain closed. “While areas of the park were closed as a safety precaution, we have

received notification from the DEC that, together with the NYS Department of Health, they have not identified any remaining contaminant levels within the publicly accessible areas of the Park – including the pool, playground and tennis courts – that would preclude their intended uses,” Supervisor Venditto said. “As such, these areas will reopen effective Monday morning, May 23rd.” The Supervisor noted that the DEC further indicated its belief that reports of allegedly buried drums on the property were likely removed during the excavation undertaken by the Town a decade ago

during the remediation process of a large portion of the park. At that time, the Town removed a large area of buried drum remnants and debris. “While the closure of portions of the park were solely done as a safety precaution, we are comfortable, following discussions with DEC representatives and environmental experts, that these areas of the park can be reopened,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We are pleased to restore access to all the wonderful amenities Bethpage Community Park offers our residents.”

Registration for the 2016 season at Town of Oyster Bay pools is underway. All Town pools will open for the season on Saturday, June 25th, through Labor Day, Monday, September 5th. The Town of Oyster Bay has four Community Park pools open to Town residents, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), Plainview-Old Bethpage and Syosset-Woodbury Community Parks, as well as Harry Tappen Pool in Glenwood Landing. Registration will take place daily at all pools. At the Community Park Pools, registration will take place from Noon until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays, and from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At Tappen Pool, registration will take place from noon until 5 p.m. on Mondays,

Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays and from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginning on June 25th, registration will be held during hours of operation at Tappen Pool and at the four Community Park Pools. Town residents interested in registering for a season pass must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years of age and under. Along with the Town’s pools, there are several other fun activities available for our Town residents to enjoy this summer. Residents should be on the lookout for our summer guide, which will be arriving in your mailbox soon, detailing all the great programs made available by the Town this summer.

Swimming lessons will be available to pool members at the Community Park pools, at an additional cost, for members ages five and older. Once a resident joins the pool, they may obtain the paperwork to sign their child up and mail in the registration materials. The Town of Oyster Bay also has a swim team that is available to pool members 6 to 16 years of age in which they can compete against other Nassau County Municipal Swim Conference teams. The program is for residents only and the Program Cost is $50 per swimmer ($25 for each additional swimmer in the same family). School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI) was among those honored at the Fourth Annual Imagine Awards, founded and presented by Cerini & Associates and presented to the region’s top non-profits, on Tuesday, May 3rd, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York. SBPLI was the winner of the Empire National Bank Innovation Award for the organization’s innovative approaches to meet its mission and dedication to offering hands-on opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to Long Island youth. One of the most popular initiatives SBPLI offers is a continuum of competitive robotics programs for children and young adults known as FIRST® (For Inspiration and

Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics. Over 135 non-profits submitted applications to the Fourth Annual Imagine Awards. Applicants hoped to win a $5,000 grant in one of five categories: Innovation, Leadership Excellence, Rising Star, Social Entrepreneurism and Social Impact. Of the many exceptional applicants, only 20 nonprofits were selected as finalists and one in each category was ultimately awarded the grant. A sixth organization was provided a Fan Favorite Award through an open online vote. The Imagine Awards encourage commitment and success in Long Island’s non-profit sector. “We are so excited to be presented with this recognition and honor from Empire National Bank

and Cerini & Associates,” says Joani Madarash, former Executive Director of, SBPLI. “Everyone in this entirely volunteer organization works incredibly hard each year to provide Long Island youth with the ultimate in STEM experiences, and it is wonderful to be acknowledged for our efforts by such prestigious organizations.” This year’s winners included Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, Best Buddies New York, the COPE Foundation, Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), Family and Children’s Association and SBPLI. Summer Adventures Nassau BOCES and Hofstra University Continuing Education and Hofstra Summer Camps have partnered to offer a variety of exciting, fun educational opportunities for young people in grades 6-11 this summer. Programs cover career exploration, arts, sciences, outdoor education and more.
