CPR Awareness Week National CPR and AED Awareness Week – June 1st through 7th, 2018 – aims to raise awareness and increase the number of people who perform CPR in cardiac arrest emergencies. Each year, more than 350,000 outof-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. About 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. That’s

why this year, the American Heart Association – the world’s leading voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke – is highlighting the importance of bystander CPR. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from

someone nearby. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Higher bystander CPR rates have been linked to greater survival rates after a cardiac arrest. “Every second counts in cardiac arrest. Bystanders are absolutely critical in a cardiac arrest emergency. They start the American

Heart Association’s out-ofhospital chain of survival by calling 9-1-1 and then providing early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions, and finding the closest AED” said [Dr. Russell Schiff, Director of Ambulatory Pediatric Cardiology at Northwell Health and Vice President of the American Heart Association’s Long Island Board of Directors “What

Wind ‘N Willow is a one-of-a-kind NYS licensed pre-school located in North Massapequa. They have a wonderful history in their community, as they have been caring for and educating young children for almost 20 years. Linda Hill has been the owner of this pre-school learning center for the past two and a half years. She is a well-trusted leader who truly cares about the children and families she serves. Linda describes going to work as “going to her happy place.” Wind ‘N Willow accepts children from as young as 18 months to as old as five years of age. They operate every month of the year and also offer a 10-month option for families who wish to keep their children home during the summer months. They have an early drop-off available at 7:30 a.m. and a late pick-up option at 6:00 p.m. If you are looking for an after school enrichment program for your child, Wind ‘N Willow offers this

As a result, Linda made the decision to expand the pre-school and add two additional classrooms, as well as a kitchen area so that she can offer a lunch program going forward. CPR Awareness Week Continued From 3 recommends Hands-Only CPR, which has two easy steps. Step 1: Call 911. Step 2: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives. The American Heart Association is marking this week here on Long Island by encouraging people to get trained in CPR to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans perform CPR and know how to use an AED. In 2007, the American Heart Association, in coalition with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council, worked collaboratively to federally designate a National CPR and AED Awareness Week,

with Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest. I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls). I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom. As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled. Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes. Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing. Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over? And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal. Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses. We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

Teeing Off Against Cancer The American Cancer Society Kicked Off the 46th Year of Babes Against Cancer this week uniting more than 30 Golf and Country Clubs across Long Island to raise funds and awareness to support breast and prostate cancer. The event raises more than $1M annually and the collective support has surpassed $30 million dollars, making it the largest American Cancer Society fundraiser of its kind, thanks to the joint efforts of over 600

volunteers and 5,000 participants at 30 country clubs in the New York Metro area. More than 230 guests attended the official campaign launch for 2018 on Thursday, May 17th at the Glen Oaks Club, 175 Post Avenue, Old Westbury. Dollars raised through Babes Against Cancer supports the American Cancer Society’s work to save lives and provide support to everyone impacted by cancer -- from research to education,

prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery. Awards in many categories support growth, innovative fundraising and dollars raised. This past year, the Top Award was presented to the Glen Oaks Club committee for raising a total of $236,326 in the past season. The runner-up was Fresh Meadow Country Club, who have collectively raised more than $2.8 M since the inception of the Babes campaign. Highlight of the day was the presentation of

the Sandy Award, named in memory of Sandy Zuckerman Rothstein, a breast cancer survivor who started the first tournament at The Muttontown Club in 1972. This year’s award was presented to Sandy Seltzer of Roslyn for her outstanding contribution to the Babes Against Cancer fundraising efforts at Fresh Meadow Country Club. Old Country Road Honors Students and staff members at Old Country Road Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District honored Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso with a heartwarming ceremony to commemorate his retirement this year. Staff members planned the program as a surprise for Dr. Bonuso, who was under the impression that he was attending one

of the school’s character traits assemblies. In actuality, however, the event was designed to celebrate his extraordinary characteristics, as students took turns speaking about the countless ways Dr. Bonuso has positively impacted the district during his four years of service. Dr. Bonuso was also presented with flowers and a beautiful poster that read, “You Put the ‘Super’

in Superintendent.” “Empathy, flexibility, persistence, resilience, and most importantly, optimism,” said Principal Anthony Lubrano of Dr. Bonuso’s defining character traits. “I hope you continue to wield your superpowers after retirement. We will miss you and hope you will fly by and visit us sometime.”

Teachers throughout the Hicksville Public School District’s seven elementary schools participated in a professional development seminar led by literary consultant Kelly Harmon, from San Antonio, Texas. The interactive and

virtual workshop, held at Old Country Road School, was designed to provide teachers with strategies to enhance literacy instruction through the use of Literature Circles, where students work in small groups to discuss

literature in depth. Teachers also used Zoom technology to converse digitally in a webinar-style presentation with the purpose to create studentcentered learning in the elementary classroom.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas Hand today announced that residents can get a jumpstart on summer by pre-registering for Town pool passes beginning on Saturday, May 26th. All Town pools will open for the season beginning on Saturday, June 23rd. “The warm, sunny days of summer are just around the corner and residents may start pre-registering for our pools Memorial Day weekend,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This year we have many new amenities for our residents, including new pool deck furniture, picnic benches, sunshades, and improved restroom facilities.” The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage

Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. Beginning on May 26th, pre-registration will take place daily and will be held from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays at the community park pools and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Tappen Pool. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, pre-registration will take place from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at all facilities. Registration will take place during regular hours of operation once pools open daily. “In addition to the great new amenities, the Town is offering swimming lessons

at local pools to members age five and older,” Councilman Hand said. “Our more competitive swimmers can join a swim team, which is available to pool members ages 6-16. Swim Team members have the opportunity to compete against other Nassau County Municipal Swim Conference teams.” Residents interested in pre-registering must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number required. Daniel Jacob, a seventhgrade student from Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District, won second place in the Long Island Language Teachers’ annual poster contest. Daniel competed against more than 90 students from

19 schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The annual contest provides a creative outlet for students to express an appreciation of worldwide languages and cultures through art. This year’s theme was “Languages: Windows to the World.”

Members of Wantagh’s Boy Scout Troop 96 and Venturing Crew 577 were off to Pennsylvania this past weekend for a a fun filled adventure. They camped at Achahela Scout camp in Blakeslee, PA. On Saturday, May 19th, between the planned municipal dam release and the torrential rains, the Lehigh River at White Haven, PA, crested to Class

International Celebration As a culmination to their unit on the geographic and cultural influence of different countries, fourthgraders at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District hosted an international celebration.

Students presented their projects in PowerPoint format for parents and guests in the classroom, then came together with the other fourthgrade classes to perform several cultural dances, including Israel’s Od Lo

Ahavti Dai and Ireland’s Irish Washerwoman. The celebration concluded with students and their guests enjoying foods from each of the countries they had studied. The event is an annual tradition at Kramer Lane.

Soldier Creation As a culminating activity to their study of ancient China, sixth-grade students in Carolyn Acevedo’s class at Shore Road School in Bellmore created a life-size Tibetan soldier. During the casting process, select students were wrapped in plastic bags and tape. Plaster strips were then applied to create a cast for the soldier’s body and head and then painted in designs indicative of the period. “The Tibetan soldier was a perfect way to bring history to life,” Acevedo said. Prior to making the

Tibetan soldier, the students participated in a videoconference with the Cleveland Museum of Art called “Tomb Culture of Ancient China.” They created Chinese lanterns to coincide with Lantern Day, a festival during the Chinese New Year. The students studied the five basic features of ancient China’s civilization, which included government and dynasties; art, architecture and public works; job specialization and social classes; religion and writing. They also focused their studies on the Qin Dynasty and how the

emperor had terracotta soldiers in his tomb to protect him in the afterlife. Acevedo explained that there was a research and writing component to the study. The students had to research and give presentations with an accompanying activity about one of the five features of China’s civilization. Additionally, they performed researchbased inquiries through a social studies toolkit provided through Engage New York, the state’s new social studies framework for grades K-12.

DNA Lab Shore Road sixthgraders in the Bellmore School District joined thousands of forensic scientists in their quest to determine whether Anna Anderson’s claim that she was Anastasia Romanov, the daughter of the last Russian Tsar, was valid. Through a workshop with Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center, the students studied various physical and DNA analysis to determine the truth of her statement made in 1922. Anna Anderson was best known as one of several imposters who said to be the Grand Duchess

The students utilized the process of DNA sequencing patterns, the family tree, and the study of mitochondrial DNA to determine the truth behind Anna Anderson’s claim. Using computer programming and the process of elimination, the students determined who was missing at the tsar’s burial ground through the study of key bone characteristics, including whether wisdom teeth were missing, if the rings on vertebrae were present and if the pelvis was that of a male or female.

Studies show that children with healthier lifestyles are better learners, and that is why John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District held Wellness Week from May 14th-18th. Wellness Week was organized by the school’s Shared Decision Making Team. The centerpiece was the inaugural Wellness Night on May 16. Students and their families were invited to participate in activities that focused on nutrition, fitness, personal safety and mindfulness. They learned how to relax through yoga and incorporate movement into their daily routines through dance. In the nutrition room, jars filled with Crisco represented the amount

of fat in different foods including potato chips, ice cream and salad dressing. The Rethink Your Drink station showed how much sugar is in popular children’s drinks such as juice, iced tea and soda. Nearby, healthy snacks and water were available. Students were able to learn water safety from a professional swimming instructor and explore different objects in a sensory room. At the gratefulness station, youngster wrote what they are grateful for on rocks that will become part of a garden. Throughout the week, students were encouraged to wear a different color each day and bring in a fruit or vegetable of that color. Other activities included Walk to School Day, the

sharing of healthy recipes for a school cookbooks and the creation of displays featuring students’ favorite healthy foods, drinks and activities. “This was a positive way to develop the children, parent and faculty’s awareness of living a healthy lifestyle using physical, emotional and nutritional skills,” said Principal Faith Skelos. “We are determined to raise well-rounded human beings who will ultimately be able to contribute to society in a positive manner. I am sincerely grateful to the parents, teachers and outside businesses who presented at our Wellness Night, for bringing their expertise and passion.”
