Ocean Cleanup The Bethpage Union Free School District’s Argonauts came together on May 10 to raise more than $1,600 for the 4Ocean Organization and the Ocean Cleanup North Pacific Foundation. The students, who represent the three elementary buildings, recently researched the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and were shocked by the detrimental effects of plastic on animals, the environment and all surrounding life. Their findings inspired them to make a difference and sparked the idea of a fundraising event. The 4Ocean Organization is a global movement actively utilizing the latest technology to prevent, intercept and remove trash from the ocean and coastlines while

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore.

The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. If you want to make a donation to the Long Island Chapter directly, please contact the Long Island B.A.C.A. presentations. Special acknowledgement went to the winners from each period: Olivia Greenfield as Themis, Joseph Bashker as Hades, Sara Bashker as Artemis, Dana Scruggs as Artemis and Matthew Cusumano as Ares. “Another great display of research, presentation and debate skills by our sixth graders in the 11th Annual Zeus Retires Debates,” said Superintendent of Schools David Schneider. “Thank you to Mrs. Klein and her father for continuing this tradition at JFK.”

The Hicksville Board of Education recently honored a student and staff member for their respective efforts supporting creative expression. With her family and teacher present, the board honored Lee Avenue Elementary School fifth grade student Shakira Mashriqi at a recent meeting. Shakira came up with the award-winning slogan, “It’s a good sign if you have safety on your mind,” on behalf of Kristine McAllister’s class. The slogan was selected as this year’s
elementary-level winner of the Long Island Rail Road’s Together Railroad and Communities Keeping Safe program safety slogan contest. The board also congratulated Hicksville High School English and theater teacher Caitlin Cassidy, who won a competitive scholarship from the English-Speaking Union TLab: Travel and Learn Abroad for the purpose of studying at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. Lupus Fundraiser For four years now, Bethpage High School junior Adina Rahman has been helping those diagnosed with lupus. She recently provided a donation of $650 to the Lupus Alliance of Long Island/Queens. To date, Adina has garnered a total of $2,250 for the nonprofit. She presented a check
to Patricia D’Accolti, executive director of the Lupus Alliance of Long Island/Queens chapter, on May 16. Ms. D’Accolti congratulated Adina for her efforts and presented her with a certificate of excellence. Adina’s passion for this cause generates from family members who have been affected by the
disease and a drive to make a difference in finding a cure. To raise the money, she held raffles at musicals and other school shows throughout the year. She is also actively involved in the SADD Club. The district salutes Adina for her passion and dedication to raising money for the Lupus Alliance.
