econd-grade students at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District culminated their unit on the 50 states by hosting a State Fair for family and friends. Each student was required to research a state of their choice and organize the information into a poster board presentation. Students included information on state birds, capitals, climate and important historical facts, and some even dressed the part of a state native.

This summer, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), Long Island’s top-ranked arts school invites students to learn from the masters in a variety of disciplines. The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 in the fall) a hands-
on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills. Beginnerthrough advanced-level classes and workshops are conducted in a customdesigned, air-conditioned arts complex that boasts professional dance studios, state-of-the-art
digital media and music/ audio production labs, art studios, practice rooms and a fully-equipped professional theatre. Daily courses are available in drama, musical theatre, creative writing, dance, music and visual arts. Students can also choose from master classes in
clowning and stage combat. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows. The academy concludes with performances by all students in each arts discipline. This four-week academy runs June 30th-July 25th at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Enrollment into the academy requires an individual school district recommendation. Accepted students are placed in classes based on age and level of achievement. Still Missing The Meaning By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,
for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family
decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.
This week has been full of “lasts.” Today was my last Varsity Sports Award Dinner. Tomorrow is my last day of high school. As I write my last article of my high school years, I look back fondly on the memories that I have made and the bonds that I have formed. Even though I’ll be entering college soon, St. John the Baptist will always hold a special place in my heart. There are great people here. Tonight, at my fourth Varsity Sports Award Dinner, I felt like I was part of something bigger than just the Crew Team. I felt as if I was a member of the entire SJB family.
From the athletes to the athletic directors, the bond is strong. As I collected my AllState Award, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. It was the fourth, and final, time I would ever stand on that stage and hear my name read by my coaches. It was a bittersweet moment as I won several accolades. From that stage, I could see some of my classmates. They make up the group that has accompanied me in this great journey that culminates in just a few hours. Now, that part of my life is almost over. We are still in training for Nationals, but there will never be a team
that can influence me so greatly. Soon, I’ll be done with high school, and those same classmates will forget my name. The teachers will forget I existed. Only I will remember the wonderful times that I’ve had and the memories I’ve formed. I’ve loved every minute of this crazy ride. Each year, as we watched the seniors lock their lockers for the last time, I have said that I won’t cry when it’s my time. Now, I am welling up from just writing this article. From day one, this place has been my home. I’m going to miss it.

The Long Island walk and area support groups are two means of helping people live with this mysterious and frequently disabling disease. June is Scleroderma Awareness Month, and includes the Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma walks across the United States, and a website, www. sclerodermaawareness. org, that provides ideas to help supporters take action, such as snapping selfies to be used in an upcoming campaign.
There will also be an hourly presentation of a new awareness PSA on the CBS Digital Billboard on 42nd Street in New York City. The Scleroderma Foundation joins organizations around the world in recognizing June 29th as World Scleroderma Awareness Day. The Scleroderma Foundation/Tri-State, Inc. Chapter will hold the 12th Annual Stepping Out To Cure Scleroderma Long Island walk in Wantagh Park on Sunday, June 1st. Registration and check-in start at 9 a.m. and the walk on the one mile course begins at 10:30 a.m. Join Long Island walk leaders Barbara Geller, Denise Gesuale and Dawn Selg, along with patients, families, and friends for an lively and fun event that raises money for support services and research. The walk helps bring awareness to scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s connective tissue - for which there is no known cause and no cure impacting an estimated 30,000 men, women, and children in the tri-state area. APPRECIATION AWARD RECEIVED - The Nassau University Medical Center’s burn center was presented with a plaque in appreciation for consistently demonstrating loyalty and support to the community and to the advancement of the Emergency Medical Services personnel. The award was presented at a brunch in honor of EMS Week, celebrating the vital work of the fire-medics, firefighters, first responders and officers for their around the clock response to assist the ill and injured residents of our county.
SUPPORTIVE STAFF - Last Sunday, May 18th, both the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility staff and the residents participated in the 2014 National Kidney Foundation walk, held at Eisenhower Park, representing the NUMC AHP dialysis division. The group raised $510, and one of the nursing home residents raised approximately $1,500 on his own. Congratulations to all!

Sea Tow Services International, Inc. (STSI), the nation’s leading onwater marine assistance service provider, is proud to announce that through a joint effort with Suffolk County Community College, it has received a grant from the State University of New York (SUNY) for a Community College Workforce Development Training Program. Sea Tow is using the funds for a variety of training efforts for its staff, including technology, customer service, and management training. The SUNY grant totaled $16,038. Thanks to an additional $2,200 in matching funds provided by STSI, the total budget for the Community College Workforce Development Training Program is $18,238. All training is taking place at STSI’s headquarters in Southold. Instructors affiliated with Suffolk County Community College are teaching the classes. “Sea Tow believes that upgrading the skills of its workers is critical to building member loyalty and company growth,” said Patrizia Zanaboni, STSI director of accounting and human resources. “The technology classes (Microsoft Office Suite) are particularly effective, as they consist of hands-on workshops using laptops loaned to us by Suffolk County Community College.” STSI Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer said, “We are grateful both to SUNY for making this grant available, and to Suffolk County Community College for partnering with us to provide our employees with the opportunity to continue their education and improve their skills.”

The mission of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is to teach the history of the Holocaust and its lessons, through education and community outreach. These include the dangers of antisemitism, racism, bullying and all other manifestations of intolerance, promoting resistance to prejudice and advocating respect for every human being. Usdan Center offers more than 40 programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, creative writing, nature and ecology and chess, annually hosting more than 1,600 students from towns throughout the Tri-State New York area. No audition is needed for most courses, and transportation is provided in air-conditioned buses that depart from most New York-area neighborhoods. One-third of Usdan’s students receive scholarship assistance based on family need. Also, families can check out Usdan’s Facebook site, where additional information and late-breaking news is featured. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 Tri-State Area children since its founding in 1968. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include members of Broadway shows and major music, theater, and dance ensembles such as the

“Hope,” a multipanelled artwork created by three classes of visual art students at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, was awarded a First Prize in the 2014 student art competition at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Long Island. The work was designed and built during the summer of 2013 at the renowned summer arts day camp, which is also an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York. It was conceived as a visual metaphor for the chronology of events that precipitated the Holocaust and its aftermath. The Usdan winning prize, in the Multi-Media/Still category, was awarded at the Center on Sunday May 18th. The project was conceived by Usdan Art Department Chair Rochelle Morgan, who is a child of Holocaust survivors. It began with a visit to Usdan in August by Ms Morgan’s mother and aunt, Lucy Gutman and Rita Kurz, who spoke and were interviewed by the student artists about their experiences in concentration camps. The students wanted to know how people survive horrific life events but still maintain dignity, integrity and compassion; and the artistic task for the students was to find the proper medium and method to best respond to this question. They also wanted their artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed not only to salvage their existence but to subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. The result is a large lucite “box” of approximately six feet in length, painted on both sides by students who have depicted scenes that bring the sisters’ story to life. Each spring, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center offers competitions for students centered on a theme of social justice, tolerance, and respect for diversity. The competitions offer

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will hold its 24th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, June 9th, at the Plandome Country Club in Plandome. The 2014 honoree is Don Lizak, former athletic director of SJC’s Long Island Campus. All proceeds from this event will support the College’s athletic programs. Since 1994, Don Lizak worked to transform SJC athletics into the highly regarded athletic program that it is today. After becoming an NCAA Division III institution in 1997, SJC won the Skyline Conference Presidents Cup four times and grew from eight varsity sports to 19. During his tenure at the College, Lizak oversaw the opening of the John A. Danzi Athletic Center in 1997 and the 24.8-acre Outdoor Field Complex in 2012. He spent 38 years in athletic administration and coaching with stints at Long Island University, Wagner College, St. John’s University and Queens College, and as a tournament director for the Metropolitan PGA. At the end of 2013, Lizak retired from SJC after 19 years of dedicated service. “Don Lizak has been an extraordinary director of athletics for St. Joseph’s College,” said Nancy Connors, vice president for the Office of Institutional Advancement at SJC. “It is fitting that the entire SJC community honor him at this event, which raises funds for athletics. excited about the clean feeling of a new haircut. Our special group of young ladies are even more excited about the hair that was cut off than the hair that remains on their heads. With the cut hair, they get to help other kids, and there’s no greater feeling.”
Registration for the Town’s pools will begin on Saturday, May 24th, Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Chris Coschignano has announced. All Town pools will open for the season on Saturday, June 28th. “Enjoying all of the Town’s pools is just one of the many fun activities available to Town residents this summer,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Look out for our summer guide, which will be arriving in your mail boxes in the coming weeks, detailing all the great programs the Town will be hosting this summer.” The Town of Oyster Bay has four community park pools open to Town of Oyster Bay residents, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post, PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, as well as Tappen Pool in Glenwood Landing. Beginning on May 24th,
registration will take place daily and will be held from noon until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays at the community park pools and from noon until 5 p.m. at Tappen Pool. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, registration will take place from noon until 7 p.m. at all facilities. Beginning on June 28th at Tappen Pool and at the Community Park Pools, registration will be held during hours of operation. Town residents interested in registering must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number required. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years of age and under. Town pools will be open daily from June 28th through Labor Day, Monday, September 1st. Residents who wish to learn the hours of
operation should visit the Town of Oyster Bay website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Swimming lessons will be available at the community park pools, at an additional cost, for members ages five and older, registration for which is done by mail. Each community park pool also has a swim team that is available to pool members. Park teams from Marjorie Post, SyossetWoodbury and Bethpage Community Parks compete in the Nassau County Municipal Swim Conference. Town Beaches Open Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto is pleased to announce that residents will soon have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful beaches as Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening for weekends only, beginning on Saturday, May 24th. “If you’re a beach lover, you probably cannot wait for the official start of summer in June to enjoy the Town’s magnificent beaches,” said Councilman Pinto. “Therefore, I am very happy to announce that four Town beaches will be open on Saturdays and Sundays beginning May 24th. Additionally all Town beaches will be open daily beginning June 21st.” Councilman Pinto also said that beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, will be available to residents at
the affordable cost of $60. In appreciation for their service, Town residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will get a reduced rate of $25. Senior citizens, 60 and older, who have a Town Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, obtainable at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee, will be able to obtain a beach sticker at no charge. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee. “The Town of Oyster Bay has spectacular beaches

County Soil and Water Conservation Districts (NCSWCD and SCSWCD) with the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee, Long Island Chapter of the United States Green Building Council, Manhasset Bay Protection Committee, New York Sea Grant, Suffolk County Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the Oyster Bay / Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee. These entities all work to protect and restore water resources and have joined together to deliver this regional forum to promote green infrastructure. Brian Zimmerman, NCSWCD District Manager said, “Green infrastructure is a way to protect the surface and ground water resources and beautifies our neighborhoods. This conference is an important step in giving people an awareness of the many aspects of green infrastructure including the cost benefits.” Paul TeNyenhuis, District Manager of SCSWCD added, “Green
infrastructure is being utilized throughout the country with great success. We are trying to bring these innovations to Long Island and the region.” The 2014 Long Island Green Infrastructure Conference will include an address by Jon Kaiman, Special Advisor on Superstorm Sandy relief to Governor Andrew Cuomo. There will also be tours of the Town of North Hempstead “Yes We Can” Community Center, the platinum-certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building. Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth will give a welcoming address. In addition, sessions on addressing applications of GI for coastal protection, effects of climate change and adaptation planning, municipal codes and breaking barriers, economic
value of GI and grants, current technologies and materials including stormwater calculators, and retrofitting to GI are planned. Now in its third successful year, the conference will bring together a diverse audience to discuss what has been done successfully in the region and how these methods can be funded. Participants will be eligible for multiple professional education credits. The New York State Society of Professional Engineers of Suffolk Chapter has
approved 2 PE PDH credits, others pending; and 4 AIA LU credits offered through the Long Island Chapter of the United States Green Building Council have been approved, others pending. The Third Annual Long Island Green Infrastructure Conference & Expo will be hosted at the Town of North Hempstead “Yes We Can” Community Center at 141 Garden Street in Westbury, on Wednesday, June 11th, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The focus of this year’s conference is “Preparing for the Next Storm.” In the wake of Storms Irene and Sandy, the need for thoughtful, well planned coastal and inland resiliency became very apparent. Areas with intact natural buffers fared best, and that protective effect can be replicated utilizing green infrastructure. Green infrastructure (GI) practices are methods that go beyond traditional practices in reducing carbon emissions, protecting water quality, improving quality of life, and providing wildlife habitat.
