Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10-week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations. With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the run at www.gotrlongisland. org/5k, participants will receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered, on June 20. About Girls On The Run Girls on the Run is a national physical activitybased positive youth development program for 3rd-8th grade girls. Participants develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care, create positive connections with peers and adults and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each session is led by trained volunteer coaches that guide and mentor the girls. The ten-week program concludes with all participants completing a celebratory 5K event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Girls on the Run Long Island is proud to serve both Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island.

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk

Bethpage Senior Appointed To Three Service Academies Alexandra Midgette, a senior at Bethpage High School, received appointments to three of the United States service academies: the Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy in Annapolis and the Coast Guard Academy in New London. She has chosen to accept the appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. Dedication and perseverance run in Alexandra’s family, which

bolstered her desire and motivation to attend a service academy. “My inspiration comes from my brother, who is a midshipman at the Naval Academy. I am determined to follow that same course and dedicate myself to a career of naval service expanding my character and leadership abilities.” Alexandra’s high school career has been decorated with recognition and achievement. Ahead

of her appointments, Alexandra attended special summer programs for each academy. She served as senator on her school’s student council all four years, was inducted into the National and World Language Honor Societies and is an active member in multiple clubs and community groups, such as the Student Civic Club and 21st Century Scholars. She has played on multiple sports teams, serving as a

captain for four of them. To round out her athletic accomplishments, Alexandra was also a member of the U.S. Marines Youth Foundation National High School Physical Fitness Program, in which she captured first place in the individual and team competitions in 2019. Throughout her academic, athletic and altruistic undertakings, Alexandra found a mentor in AP Biology teacher, Marine Fitness Team coach and former Navy Submariner John Como. She credits him with recognizing her potential for leadership and always pushing her to succeed. “Mr. Como has never let me give up on anything and I have him to thank for much of my warrior spirit,” Alexandra said. “He gave me an outlet where

Students Fight Against Food Insecurity from COVID-19 The Student Government at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School (POBJFKHS) has recently partnered with Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, to help combat food insecurity within the community. As the nation’s economic challenges continue along with the ongoing medical crisis, the volunteer work undertaken by these remarkable students has never been so crucial in the fight against COVID-19. The students created an online-fundraising campaign to support Long Island families struggling with food insecurity in the face of the COVID-19

pandemic. The Student Government then decided to team up with the POBJFKHS National Honor Society Chapter to shed even more light on the issue of hunger. The students are currently working on putting together a virtual talent show to help continue their fundraising efforts. As of May 11, the students have managed to raise $4,801 out of their $5,000 goal. “This is an outstanding act of selflessness these students are making to help those in need during such a difficult time for so many” said Dr. Lorna Lewis, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old

Bethpage Central School District. “Our students continue to make us proud, especially during these unprecedented times. Their acts are a direct representation of our District’s core values.” Island Harvest is a food bank for Long Island communities that heavily relies on donations and volunteers for their organization.
