he Science Olympiad team of South Woods Middle School recently competed in Syracuse, New York against 235 other teams in the state and took home eight medals en route to 10th-place. Third-place medals in entomology went to Sydney Chen and Emily Wong. Third-place and fifth-place medals went to Ben Huang and Andy Yang in meteorology and the Crave the Wave category, while sixth-place was awarded to Katrina Tun and Rebecca Geiger.

art, sculpture, and alternative techniques will be explored. Students will enjoy unique experiences, such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. This is a great opportunity for high school students to spend time developing their portfolios; whether they plan on applying to a BFA program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to add to their breadth of artwork as they prepare for AP or IB art courses in High School. The Summer Portfolio sessions take place 9:30am to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills in two 3-week sessions: July 6th-24th and July 27th-August 14th. Nikki Girgenti is an accomplished artist and educator who earned her MA at Stony Brook University and BA at

Dowling College. With nearly a decade of teaching at the Art League, including two years of administrative experience in the League’s Summer Art Adventure Program, and eight years of teaching high school art, Girgenti brings a fresh approach combined with a strong record of success to the Summer Portfolio Program. She currently teaches 11th grade Portfolio and 12th grade Advanced Portfolio and has a reputation for guiding scores of students towards outstanding outcomes. The Art League of Long Island will be offering a Scholarship for a $630 tuition voucher toward session one or two of Summer Portfolio Development 2015. Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the

show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being

forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

After successful scores in the 2015 American Mathematics Competition and the AIME National Mathematics contest, Syosset High School

freshman Wanlin Li has been invited to take the 44th USA Mathematical Junior Olympiad Exam (USAJMO). Only the top 200 performers out of more than 35,000 students nationwide earned a spot to sit the USAJMO. The test is a six-question, two-day, nine-hour essay/ proof exam and the third exam in a series of tests determining which students can participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The IMO is the

most prestigious and difficult secondary math examination in the world. The top 12 scorers out of the original 200 students that sit the USAJMO will be invited to a summer program held at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Hicksville Public School District Board of Education hosted a Secondary Student and Staff Recognition Ceremony to honor standout members of its middle and high school communities. The program began with a musical performance by students of the middle school chorus group,

and was followed by the ceremonial certificate distribution. Awards included the recognition of staff members’ service and of students’ academic and fine arts achievements in various competitions. Certificate distribution was led by Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso, alternating members of

the Board of Education, department supervisors and building principals - Raymond Williams of the high school and Mara Jorisch of the middle school. Photos of all of the honorees will be posted to the school district’s website, http://www. hicksvillepublicschools. org.

Syosset High School’s world language course in ancient Latin boasts more than 60 students that earned medals and certificates in the National Latin Exam, sponsored by the American Classical League and administered in March. The annual test is taken by more than 150,000 students nationwide and includes students from countries across Europe, Asia and Africa. The test is designed to challenge students’ knowledge of Latin grammar, mythology, ancient geography, derivatives and Roman culture. The exam also includes a reading comprehension section. The test was administered on three levels: Latin I, Latin II and Latin III.

Golf Outing Set On June 4th, Mercy Haven, Inc. will host its 16th Annual Golf Outing in an effort to raise critical funds for the agency which provides housing and support services to those who are homeless or living with mental illness. Family & Children’s Association (FCA), one of Long Island’s oldest and largest human service agencies, is inviting Long Islanders to support their annual Summer Camp Appeal. qualifying for an additional exam. The top 20 scoring semifinalists will be invited to participate in the finals at Purdue.

Syosset High School students that participated in the North Shore-LIJ Health System SPARK! Challenge recently won third place in the organization’s first sponsored documentary video contest. The SPARK! Challenge aims at igniting student

interest in the healthcare industry by introducing them to clinical and non-clinical career paths through hands-on experiences with a STEM emphasis. Following the SPARK! Challenge experience, the students collaborated to produce a short video

documentary recapping their experience and what they learned about healthcare careers. Approximately 30 teams and 500 students across Long Island, Queens and Staten Island participated in this year’s SPARK! Challenge.

Local residents gathered at Old Bethpage Village Restoration over the weekend of May 16th and 17th for a memorial service to honor all service men and women who gave their lives in the defense of freedom. Tanks rolled across the encampment field as if it were the European countryside of 1945. Ground forces took cover behind rolling tanks as they advanced towards enemy fire coming from a grey gun turret buried in the green countryside. Gunshots rang out over shouted commands as soldiers descended and took over the enemy camp. Spectators got to

experience the intensity of field battle as is was during WWII. NY State Senator Michael Venditto took time to thank veterans for their commitment and dedication. He was also able to educate local youngsters about the difficulties servicemen and women had to face during war at that time. Visitors got a first-hand look at a fox hole, pop-tents, M8 and M20 tanks, a Daimler Ferret and Scout car in addition to other war memorabilia. Most of the materials during WWII were made of cotton or wool and leather, lead to many times when the soldiers were

damp, wet, and chilled to the bone. Changing sock while trying to doge bullets became a skill that many soldiers had to learn. Talking with veterans was very exciting as they retold stories of their years fighting for our freedom. This event was made possible through the dedication of local veterans, service men and women, in cooperation with the Office of Nassau County Executive, Ed Mangano, the Nassau County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Museum of American Armor, Long Island Living History Association and the generosity of local sponsors.

Thought Provoking Reading

Burns Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District welcomed an instructor from the Teacher’s College at Columbia University to speak to students and teachers about the importance of making connections while reading. Students were taught to

use particular prompts to generate thoughts while reading a book. The lesson, entitled “Pushing Our Thinking About Reading,” encouraged students to consider connecting thoughts, including what the text makes them think about, why the text is important and examples in their lives. The students

Dollars And Sense Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School was recently ranked as a top performing school in the national “Working In Support of Education (w!se) Financial Certification Program.” The Plainview students were recognized as some

of the highest exam scorers among students from hundreds of schools across 40 different states. “We are very proud of these students who worked diligently to not only become financially literate, but also perform at a superior level,” stated Dr. Lorna Lewis, Superintendent of the

Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. “We aim to encourage all our students to become more financially aware in preparation for their futures.” The w!se Program provides teachers with a curriculum and instructional resources to educate personal finance.

The students take an exam to measure their level of financial literacy in pursuit of a certification. Students learned how to approach their finances proactively, how to better handle and avoid debt and how to prepare for college and the global workplace. The schools are ranked based on the percentage
