Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Aviation students helped to preserve history just in time for Memorial Day weekend. The students, who are completing their internships at the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale stand proudly with the Wright R3350 Aircraft Engine they helped to restore. Featured from left

The students removed the cylinders, sorted the cables and spark plugs, cleaned the parts, disassembled, and reassembled the engine,

repaired, painted, and got the engine ready for display purposes. The American Airpower Museum holds a collection of nearly 30 historically significant aircraft. The two interns are working on repairing a Curtis-Wright Cyclone R3350 engine, which was developed to power Boeing’s WWII era bomber plane, the B-29 Superfortress.

Receiver Pravato Advises Late School Taxpayers Of Last Chance To assist property owners who missed the May 10th deadline for paying their 2020-2021 school taxes, Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents they can still pay the bill by June 1st with a State-mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property. Late payers should immediately contact the Tax Receiver Pravato’s office at (516) 624-6400 if they did not receive a

second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after June 1st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Pravato advises homeowners

who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at (516) 571-2090 to determine the amount due. They may also visit the Nassau County Treasurer’s Office at 1 West Street in Mineola. Receiver Pravato noted, “Taxpayers in the Town of Oyster Bay are already paying some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and I want to make sure that our residents do not pay more out of pocket than they have to.”

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonproﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Go Green When Spending Time Outdoors This Summer

The great outdoors beckons people year-round, but nature is especially enticing in summer, when warm weather compels people to leave their couches and soak up some sun. Spending time outdoors is rewarding, and it can be even more so when men and women take steps to make their outdoor recreation as eco-friendly as possible. Whether it’s choosing certain activities or taking other measures, there are various ways to go green when spending time outdoors this summer and beyond.

• Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

• Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not ﬂy, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that

automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. By vacationing locally, outdoor enthusiasts can reduce their reliance on airplanes, thereby reducing the effects those airplanes have on the environment. • Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach. • Volunteer with a local park service. The National Park Service offers a variety of volunteer opportunities to individuals who are enamored with the great outdoors and are interested in protecting their local and national parks. His work is in numerous public and private collections, and has been shown internationally in Finland, China, Poland and the Czech Republic, as well as across the United States, earning numerous awards in many prestigious exhibitions. “I focus primarily on the human figure depicted in environments that create a context for psychologically charged, open ended narratives. primary inspiration. The unexpected colors and textures found in nature inspire Ron to capture the dynamics of light and dark; form and balance. As a realist, he uses tone and color to invite his audience to experience the moment captured on canvas. His preferred mediums of acrylic (for layering of color), or oil (for blending) are specifically chosen to create a sense of drama and movement. Ron is also a muralist and has done commissions for school districts, hospitals, nursing homes, municipalities, and private residences. Caryn Coville’s style is realism, and her work showcases

objects. Her award-winning work has been shown extensively in solo gallery exhibits and juried shows and her work is held in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Canada. She has an extensive list of awards and credits for her amazing artwork. Lupe Galván grew up in rural Idaho among the farm lands of the Snake River valley, the historic land of the Shoshone people. Holden Willard is a 21 year old undergraduate student studying at the Montserrat College of Art. In May, he will receive his BFA in Painting, however his interests serve multiple mediums: printmaking, photography, performance, collage & woodworking. “My work is currently concerned with analyzing the effects of white male toxicity, specifically toxic masculinity. I’m mainly striving towards creating a dialogue between the past, present and future - be it through the lens of family, friends and environment. In my mind, these are essential devices that I utilize to create a coming of age narrative in rural Maine. Images from home, adventures of youth, fears and anxieties expressed through eyesight and posture - all in an effort of saying the unsaid.” Patty Yantz’ art is about personal reaction to a scene or location rather than an attempt at technical reproduction of that view. “Focusing on color, contrast and composition, I have found that close-up observation is a good tool for understanding different perspectives and developing conceptual awareness. After retiring from teaching secondary art Patty has immersed herself in her own art career. A record number of students in Syosset High School’s Research Program have qualified for the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) after receiving first place designations at regional and state events. At the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF) in March, Maiya Raghu was awarded first place in the Microbiology category, Giselle Rasquinha placed first in Animal Sciences, and Isabella Souza took first place in Behavioral and Social Sciences. Also in March, Michael Chu took first place in Computational Biology and Angela Mao won first place in

Environmental Sciences in the New York State Science and Engineering Fair (NYSSEF). All five seniors will move on to this year’s virtually held ISEF competition taking place in May. Additionally, Isabella was given the American Psychological Association Award and Giselle the Regeneron Biomedical Award at LISEF, while Angela was given the American Meteorological Society Award at NYSSEF. Plainview Water District Stresses Responsible Pool Filling This Summer

The Plainview Water District (PWD) is committed to ensuring all residents conserve water this summer and one of the ways they can do so is with responsible filling and maintenance of swimming pools. As part of its Preserve Plainview initiative, the District is providing a host of useful tips that will ensure water is not unnecessarily being wasted from a resident’s swimming pool. “With so many residents in the Plainview-Old Bethpage community having pools, it is important to stay informed about some of the best practices for filling and maintaining their water levels,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “Each summer, millions of gallons of water are wasted due to leaks and other inefficient practices. We hope that by raising awareness about some simple measures, we can start reversing this trend and cut down on this

unnecessary water waste.” Recommended Tips for Filling Pools: Check for any possible holes or leaks in the liner before filling up. Don’t leave the pool unattended when it is being filled. Someone should remain present at all times to avoid overfilling and expedite shut off in case of an emergency. NEVER leave a pool filling overnight. Pools should be covered when not in use. Hundreds of gallons of water per month can be lost due to evaporation. Only add chemicals to the pool when it is full, and add only what you need according to the pool manual. This will avoid improper levels, which would cause you to empty out and refill the pool. As an additional precaution, always use a hose connection vacuum breaker to prevent water ﬂow reversal.

Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict

adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the

right home is found and Alleykattz is currently in need of foster homes (preferably close to Long Island). Syosset Forensics Team Wins State Championship Syosset High School’s Speech and Debate team, Forensics, defended their title as New York State champions at the state finals in late April, winning for the third straight year. The team also placed first in the Debate division, first in the Speech division, and third in Congressional Debate/Student Congress. The Debate championship is particularly notable because it is the second time Syosset closed out all three sections, Varsity, JV and Novice; a distinction that no other school in the state has earned. Syosset previously closed out all three sections in the 2019 State Championship. The 2020 State Championship was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the team championship title, six Syosset High School students were named State Champions in

their respective events: Sophomore Alan Huang for JV Prose/Poetry, Sophomore Maggie Liu for JV Debate, Senior Michelle Jin for Varsity Prose/Poetry, Senior Isabella Souza for Varsity Debate, and freshmen Vincent Huang and Kyra Kozey, who were declared co-champions in Novice Debate after they both emerged undefeated after nine rounds of competition. “The unusual circumstances of this year made the team championship very special,” said Syosset High School English teacher Lydia Esslinger, long time coach and advisor of the Forensics team. “We have been the defending State champion for the last three years. To hold onto that title this year says so much about the adaptability and drive for excellence in our students. It would have been easy to

lose interest when such a ‘live’ activity had to go virtual, but my student leaders consistently made time after their school day ended to work with younger students and encourage them to stay in the game. Much of the credit for how well we did this year goes to them.” The Forensics year begins in late September with tournaments nearly every weekend school is in session. Eighty Syosset students joined over 1,000 Long Island students competing for the state championship, with more than half of them advancing to elimination rounds and many finishing in the top six in their event. The Forensics year continues into May and June with national championships in which forty-eight Syosset students will represent the New York City region.

For National Electrical Safety Month, PSEG Long Island Offers Helpful Tips May is National Electrical Safety Month, and PSEG Long Island reminds its customers that they can take simple, costfree precautions to stay safe around their homes and neighborhoods. “The safety of our customers and employees is always PSEG Long Island’s top priority, so National Electrical Safety Month is an important opportunity for us to spread the word,” said John O’Connell, vice president of Transmission and Distribution at PSEG Long Island. “Our electrical workers undergo extensive training so they can work safely, and we also want to educate the people we serve about how to stay safe around electricity in and around their homes.” Electricity is essential to modern life, yet it can

sometimes be taken for granted. Here are some practical tips to help customers stay safe: Do not handle electric appliances with wet or damp hands, and never use electric appliances in wet or damp conditions, unless the appliances are specifically rated for that use. If there are small children or pets around, make sure unused wall outlets have safety coverings. All outlets within reach should be protected with plastic closures that fit snugly and cannot be removed easily. Inspect all appliances and extension cords regularly to ensure that they are in good condition. Cords should not be frayed or damaged. Ensure that cords do not run under rugs or have furniture

resting on them. Never pour water on an electric fire, as water acts as a conductor and can cause shock. A fire extinguisher rated “Class C” should be used for electric fires. Install smoke detectors on the ceiling away from air vents and near bedrooms. Test smoke detectors every few months to ensure they’re working, and change the batteries every spring and fall when the clocks change. Never touch a downed wire or go near one. Oyster Bay Town Clerk Rich LaMarca reminds residents of the availability of the Town’s Green Pass Beach Parking Permit for eligible Town residents who drive clean pass eligible vehicle. In order to qualify for the Green Pass Beach Parking Permit, which comes at no cost to eligible residents, the hybrid or alternative vehicle must be clean pass eligible. “As the weather gets warmer and with residents no doubt looking towards the summer season, my office is reminding residents that as a way of rewarding those who already have chosen ‘green energy’ vehicles, and to further encourage others to do so, the Town

offers free ‘green’ permits for parking permits at the Town beaches,” Town Clerk LaMarca said. “Our environment is one of our most precious resources, and I am proud to offer this incentive to Town residents who continue to choose to ‘live green’ and do their part to cut down on harmful emissions created by our vehicles.” Residents who are looking to apply for the GreenPass Beach Permit are required to provide documentation, including proof of residency (utility bill), vehicle registration and photo of the car showing the license plate and clean pass or document stating such model. The “green” beach permit

entitles a resident to get a “green” seasonal beach sticker, which can be obtained at any of the Town’s beaches. In the recent past, he Town has made significant strides to cut down on its dependence on fossil fuels, including using biodiesel fuel in Town vehicles and has also been using small electric vehicles where appropriate. We will cover everything from basic circuit training to interval training, and the

format will change every week. Modifications are always offered to suit all participants, so all levels are welcome. Join us this summer to stay in shape.” The new Outdoor Booth Camp course is 10 weeks long, meeting on Wednesdays from 9am – 10am, beginning on July 7th. Bring your own hand weights, resistance bands and exercise mat. Class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing measures. Masks must be worn as long as State mandates require such. Temperatures will be checked upon entry. The facility will be cleaned and sanitized daily, both before and after classes. Broadway in Hicksville from 5:30pm to 9:30pm on Monday, June 7th, Tuesday, June 8th and Thursday, June 10th. The schedule is subject to change. If a session is cancelled, make-up day(s) will be attempted. Class fees are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents (checks or money orders only).
