Pitch Perfect Puppets Students at Burns Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District learned the importance of exhibiting deliberate acts of kindness through an interactive assembly led by artsin-education performer Janice Buckner.
Strumming her guitar and showcasing a cast of puppets she brought with her, Buckner sang a medley of tunes about demonstrating politeness through words and actions on a daily basis. Staff members and students enthusiastically
volunteered to join Buckner on stage, helping to resonate the important message of the program. The assembly was a fun and entertaining way for students to learn another character education lesson at Burns Avenue.

Helping the Hungry Robbins Lane Elementary School students recently completed the 2016 Long Island Cares Practicea-Thon, raising close to $550 in the fight against hunger. Student musicians logged in the minutes they practiced throughout the month of March, asking sponsors (family
and friends) to match their practice minutes with monetary donations. All proceeds from the students’ donors are going directly to Long Island Cares, a food bank originally launched by the late pop musician Harry Chapin. Robbins Lane studentmusicians who raised money are Samantha
Carbone, Hallie Diamant, Jenna Ferraro, Benjamin Handell, Ryan Lam, Jesse Lebolt, Molly Lebolt, Sophie Weiskopf and Jeslin Wong. They received certificates of appreciation from the Robbins Lane Music Department and the Harry Chapin Practice-aThon coordinator.

The Hicksville Public School District Board of Education hosted a Secondary Student and Staff Recognition Ceremony to honor standout members of its middle and high school communities. The program began with a musical performance by students of the high school chamber ensemble, who performed

they discovered a few simple tips such as making conscientious purchases at the grocery store to eliminate waste and throwing trash in appropriate receptacles. The students also investigated the effects of buried garbage and what it does to our drinking

The East Street Elementary School community paid homage to the nation’s fallen heroes with a medley of patriotic musical performances, speeches and activities during its annual Memorial Day ceremony. Following a schoolwide performance of “God Bless America,” student
representatives from every class planted small flags in the “Field of Honor” located at the front schoolyard. Three fifth-graders then read aloud their essays about what Memorial Day means to them, and the ceremony concluded with a schoolwide singalong of “Proud to Be an American,” which featured
some students performing the song in sign language. East Street’s Memorial Day ceremony served as a way for the entire school community to celebrate national pride, and to salute the fallen war veterans who have fought to protect America and its freedoms.

Career Opportunities engineers. The seventh graders also had the chance to participate in three round table discussions involving professionals from a specific field. Students asked the professionals questions and presented what they learned during their entrepreneurship unit. This included showcasing posters and business cards they made and speaking to the company they created. Students had complete control as they decided everything from the name of their company, to how
many products they chose to make and how much they will charge. During the past week, the students have been selling cookie mix mason jars to their classmates. For the second part of the program, students played a game of 20 questions to determine who the “mystery guest speaker” was. The speaker, Gail Warwick of the Mid Island Youth Jewish Community Center, then spoke to students about her role and the importance of community service.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES - Seventh grade students at Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School asked visiting professionals questions and presented what they learned during their entrepreneurship unit during a career workshop. This included showcasing posters and business cards students made and speaking to the company they created. Over 50 community members and parents visited the school to teach the students about their professions, which included law enforcement, military service, engineering and may others.
Alex Konstantyn, a 78 year-old Holocaust survivor, shared his emotional testimony and personal perspective of survival with 8th and 9th grade students at Nassau BOCES Willet Avenue Middle School. When Mr. Konstantyn was just four years old he thought he was going on a picnic with his family. Instead they were fleeing the bombs from Germany and Russia as they spent the next year wandering the countryside of Poland. Students, teachers and administrators sat in silence as Mr. Konstantyn recounted his journey and
hardships over the next four years. He and his mother survived ordeals at police prisons, two years in an underground bunker, being masqueraded as a girl in a dress and brutal winters. Through it all his mother kept them alive until they were liberated by the Russians. In 1950 they immigrated to Israel. “As long as I can, I will keep sharing my story so that it can be kept alive and stop it from happening again,” said Mr. Konstantyn. In his introduction, Willet Avenue Middle School Principal Robert Lombardi said it is “how
we treat one another that determines the kind of school we have and ultimately what kind of community we have. We study history in school, but today is an opportunity to hear about history firsthand.” Konstantyn was presented with an Honorary Golden Eagle Award and pin. The award, usually reserved for students of high caliber, was given to Konstantyn for overcoming adversity and to thank him for his presentation. He is the first visitor to receive an Honorary Golden Eagle Award.
The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) will be moving into a temporary headquarters in Hicksville, while their longtime facility located at 110 Ring Road, Garden City, undergoes extensive renovations. The move, scheduled for early July 2016, will provide the GSNC corporate offices, Cookie Cupboard and Girl Scout Shop with a short-term home while the regional Girl Scouts council headquarters undergoes a complete overhaul. “We are very grateful to everyone who is part of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County for being understanding and supportive as we transition to our new temporary office in Hicksville,”
stated Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “After more than 50 years, our building is in need of several updates, which will help us better serve the 23,000 Girl Scouts members.” The planned renovations will be executed by design firm Danita Otruba Architect of Westbury, and are anticipated to be completed summer 2017. The headquarters will receive much-needed structural updates including a new roof, windows and insulation which will provide overall cost savings on utilities, security and technology system renovations. Additionally, the interior will undergo several cosmetic changes,

Great Expectations By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What
does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies
frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

Backpack Delivery The Syosset High School community recently wrapped up a monthlong drive to collect muchneeded items for the homeless through the We CARE (Compassionate, Altruistic, Responsive and Effective) Backpack fundraiser. Representatives from a cross-section of Syosset High School clubs and community-based organizations were on hand for a culminating reception in which high school representatives and other contributors presented 150 stuffed backpacks and an additional 20 crates to Nassau Haven, an emergency shelter for runaway and homeless teens. Items in the backpacks and crates included warm socks, gloves, scarves, rain ponchos, various hygiene products, first aid kits, bottled water, juice boxes, granola bars and other healthy nonperishable snacks,
among others. Syosset High School counselor Deborah Contino served as the key adviser for the We CARE drive, overseeing the lead student group, the school’s Awareness Club, as well as garnering help from other counseling department members and several other members of the high school faculty and administration. Word of the We Cares drive spread, with some even outside of the high school making contributions. The U.S. Army donated 16 backpacks filled with a ready pack meal, T-shirt and a hat. During the ceremony, Army representatives joined student ambassadors in presenting Nassau Haven officials with backpacks on behalf of their respective clubs. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers also presented a backpack on behalf of central administration. Leslie Epps, one of
the school’s executive We CARE student ambassadors, consulted with Nassau Haven to develop a list of needed survival items, which was distributed to teachers, club advisers, coaches and departments – essentially recruiting every facet of the school to sponsor a backpack. “When this was initially conceived, our desire was to alleviate some of the suffering of those assisted by Nassau Haven,” said Leslie. “We began to spread the word about the fundraiser, just to gain input, and before it even began, anticipation and excitement grew to the point where classes, clubs, teams and departments began to reserve backpacks. From that point on, we knew that the fundraiser would be successful, but we never dreamed that it would grow to such a grandiose scale.”

Budget Passes Thank you to all of the residents who participated in the 2016-2017 school district budget vote and trustee election. Voters approved the budget 1505 to 425. With this support, the district will continue to provide a full academic
and co-curricular program while also addressing important areas of our school infrastructure. Board members Tracy Frankel, Rob Gershon, and Susan Parker all ran unopposed for re-election, and will be returning to
the Board of Education. Vote totals are as follows: Gershon – 1444, Frankel – 1448, and Parker – 1524. Again, thank you to all who voted and for your ongoing commitment to our schools!
