Syosset Budget Results

Thank you to all of the residents who participated in the 2017-2018 school district budget vote and trustee election. Voters approved the budget 2,277 to 793. With this support, the district will continue to provide a full academic and co-curricular program while also addressing important areas of our school infrastructure and implementing new instructional technology resources. Additionally, the community approved Proposition No. 2: Expenditure from the Capital Reserve Fund, 2,526 to 539. This will enable the district to move forward on districtwide capital improvements identified as Phase I projects using monies saved in the Capital Reserve Fund. In the Board of Education election, Carol C. Cheng, Dr. Michael Cohen and Anna Levitan won seats on the Board of Education. Vote totals are as follows: Dr. Cohen – 2,003, Cheng – 1,726 and Levitan – 1,089. Again, thank you to all who voted, and for your ongoing commitment to our schools!

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.

Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

County Trivia Champs Congratulations to the South Woods Middle School seventh-grade Trivia Team for capturing the CP Nassau Trivia Challenge championship in March. The team earned the right to participate in the championship after winning the school trivia competition. Schools from throughout Nassau County participated in the event. Now in its 31st year, the challenge brings

students with great minds and good hearts together to help raise funds to benefit the programs and services CP Nassau provides for over 1,800 children and adults with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities. According to CP Nassau’s website, it has become the organization’s most successful fundraiser thanks to the students, parents, teachers and administrators who

support the effort. During the competition, each participating school provides a team of four students who collaborate on a 100-question trivia test. Each team member raises money for CP Nassau by asking family and friends for a standard donation for their participation. In winning this year’s event, the South Woods team answered questions on a wide variety of topics.

Syosset High School junior Wanlin Li is part of a four-member team representing the United States that took first place in the European Girl’s Mathematical Olympiad held in Zürich, Switzerland. In addition to taking top honors, the girls were each awarded a gold medal for their individual performances on the challenging mathematics exam. The EGMO is an international mathematics competition for female high school students that this year welcomed 168 students on 44 teams from throughout the world. Wanlin joined team

members Angela Deng, Qi Qi and Siye Zhu in scoring 148 of a possible 168 points on six proof-style problems administered over the course of two days. The U.S. team was sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, which consistently assembles top teams in the competition. The organization is the world’s largest community of mathematicians, students and math enthusiasts with a goal of accelerating the understanding of the world through mathematics. “We are proud of the students on our team who have worked very hard to prepare for this

competition,” said U.S. EGMO team leader/ supervisor Sherry Gong. “This was a challenging exam so we are especially honored to have all four students take home individual gold medals.” Last year Wanlin tied for the fourth highest score in the country on the United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad exam and was one of just 50 students nationwide invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program. She is also a past runner up at the New York State Mathematics League competition.

Showing Character Students at A.P Willits Elementary School in Syosset learned that chivalry is not dead and that it’s not difficult to exercise good behavior and act appropriately toward one another. A recent production of the school’s First Grade Drama Club demonstrated this, as the approximately 35 young

actors and actresses, aided by dedicated crew members, presented “Good Manners: A Medieval Quest for Good Behavior.” Drama club members assumed the roles of apprentices, damsels, kings, queens, princes, princesses, knights, sorcerers and dragons for this play that brought

a medieval twist to character education in an entertaining fashion. Characters such as “Sir Cus Clown” and “Sir Loin Steak” provided plenty of humor to the show, which was directed by teachers Denise Martinez and Jill Mulherin.

The team competed at the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Regional Competition at Hofstra University where they were recipients

Judith A. Hynes, a veteran educator who has been with Nassau BOCES for nearly ten years, has been named Executive Manager of District Programs for the Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs (RSIP). The position is a brand new post created to expand the department’s capabilities, and Ms. Hynes was first choice to fill this important office. The role of Executive Manager is a natural extension of the critical work Ms. Hynes has been doing as Principal for RSIP. During her tenure at Nassau BOCES, Ms. Hynes has made a substantial impact on the agency’s Alternative Education programs. Under her leadership, enrollment in Regional Summer School has grown to more than 25,000 students in 28 districts across Nassau County, with significant increases in the passing rates on the New York State Common Core exams. The Twilight Alternative High School program has also

experienced considerable growth, expanding from two to nine schools. In considering Ms. Hynes for the Executive Management position, Nassau BOCES Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lydia M. Begley and RSIP Executive Director Gene Silverman agreed that Ms. Hynes must not be removed from the good work she has been doing on behalf of Nassau County school districts. Instead, Ms. Hynes will continue to grow these programs, while developing additional services to further support the districts. One such service, slated as a primary focus for Ms. Hynes, is designed to help districts to better accommodate the exploding population of older English language learners. It is an almost insurmountable challenge to teach English to students in their upper teens while assisting them in completing a full high school program in a single year. Ms. Hynes is overseeing

the development of an Alternative High School program that will enable these older students to learn at night while working during the day, empowering them to become productive citizens and to contribute to their communities. “Nassau BOCES is a phenomenal educational agency that provides the districts of Nassau County with the help and support they need to implement new and innovative ideas that best serve their students,” said Ms. Hynes. “Our component districts trust us because we have effective programs run by skilled, experienced professionals who work tirelessly to ensure that students are getting the best possible educational opportunities. I am grateful for the team here at BOCES and for our district partners. Working together, we will continue to help the students of Long Island along the path to future success.”

Auxiliary Awards Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker was pleased to attend the annual Auxiliary Police Longevity Awards Ceremony at Nassau County Police Headquarters. This important event

celebrates the dedication and devotion of the members of the Nassau County Auxiliary Police. “I was proud to attend the Annual Auxiliary Police Awards and Promotions Ceremony and have an opportunity to thank

these brave volunteers for their countless hours dedicated to keeping our communities safe,” said Walker. Their continued volunteerism is what makes Nassau County one of the finest in the Nation.

Service Learning Fair Students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech celebrated the major contributions they have made to their community during the 2017 Service Learning Fair. The entire student body participated in the fair, which is the culmination of a year of community service. Frequently referred to as “learning by doing,” service learning refers to the use of hands-on, community-based projects to supplement traditional curricula. Students participate in service activities that relate to and enrich their understanding of their chosen courses of study. “We are extremely proud of the connections and outstanding services our students have made within the community,” said

Barry Tech Principal Peter Dalton. “The annual fair is a great way for students to highlight their successes to classmates, parents, our administration and the community. Volunteering and being involved in community service help foster the sense of personal and social responsibility that’s needed to develop well-rounded students.” Barry Tech’s barbering program made a $600 contribution to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for cancer research by shaving more than 20 heads. Health Services students raised $2,000 for the American Heart Association through their Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. The Medical Assisting program capped a year of blood drives for the Long Island Blood Bank with

480 pints to date. Fashion Design students collected 200 dresses for Becca’s Closet, with 30 of those dresses donated to girls for their proms, enabling less fortunate teens to attend their proms in style. Small Engine Repair students collected more than 250 toys that were donated to the John Theissen Toy Drive during the holiday season. Other projects included: building homes for Habitat for Humanity; teaching lessons in oral hygiene for the American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile program; and supporting cancer patients through the upcoming Barry Tech Car Wash and Car Show for the Michael Magro Foundation.

Walking the Talk The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (HMTC) kicked off its recent inaugural Walk the Talk… Never Again 5K walk on the grounds of Welwyn Preserve in Glen Cove with a ribbon-cutting. The walk was a fundraiser to support HMTC’s education programs across Long Island that empower, mobilize and create Upstanders – people who

stand up to antisemitism and intolerance and advocate acceptance for all. The Walk’s theme was rescue and featured 25 posters highlighting extraordinary actions of rescue by ordinary people during the Holocaust. The posters were researched and created by the youth of the Babylonian Jewish Center in Great Neck under the leadership of Anna Hakakian.

Discovering Recovery The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) celebrated possibility, hope and promise at the 30th Annual Angel Ball. Three hundred and twenty-five LICADD supporters and friends came together to note a year of milestones in the addiction and recovery arena. The filled to capacity crowd, raised over $310,000 enabling LICADD to continue it’s important and vital work of service, support, prevention education and advocacy. At the height of an opioid crisis on Long Island, this successful event was a positive stride in the fight to support those individuals and their families who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The Angel Ball paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Adele C. Smithers. A good friend and advocate for LICADD, she has been dubbed the “godmother” of research, education, prevention and recovery in the field of alcohol abuse and drug dependence. Her guidance, leadership and generosity will remain guiding principles for LICADD, as the agency furthers its 61year mission for years to come. Of Adele Smithers, LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman shared, “Amid the sad reality of Adele’s passing,

there has been tremendous opportunity and strides forward. Adele left us a blueprint for what it means to dedicate a life to community service, to lend a voice for those who have none, and to work diligently to confront inequity and injustice.” In tribute to Adele Smithers, the Angel Ball was renamed, The Adele Smithers Angel Ball. The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, led by Adele’s son, Christopher Smithers, his wife, Nikki and family were on hand to accept the honor. Commissioner Timothy D. Sini of the Suffolk County Police Department was honored as LICADD Community Champion. LICADD applauded Commissioner Sini’s approach to addressing the opioid epidemic. Under his leadership, the Suffolk County Police Department offers rehabilitation rather than incarceration for youthful drug offenders. With Commissioner Sini’s support, LICADD and Suffolk County have partnered to operate a 24-hour substance abuse hotline. This successful program is entering its second year.
