The Power of Positive Thinking contact with you. Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too! Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver. Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed. Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you

could accomplish during the next day. Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day! Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate. Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you! May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going. The results you obtain will be well worth the effort. Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever. We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily. In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Stop the Bleed The Trauma team from NYU Winthrop Hospital, an ACS Level 1 Trauma Center, expanded the scope of its Stop the Bleed program to more than a dozen Athletic Trainers who serve area high schools throughout Nassau County. Athletic Trainers from Syosset and Locust Valley high schools participated in this week’s training alongside NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers who serve high schools in Garden City, East Meadow, Herricks, Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Plainview, Westbury, Uniondale and Levittown among others. Knowledge gained through Stop the Bleed is most often associated with treating injuries following mass casualties, gun violence or car crashes, but sports injuries can also be very serious. By empowering the Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed, high school sports teams in Nassau County will now be better prepared to address a wide range of injury possibilities – including life-threatening bleeding. “The NYU Winthrop Athletic Trainer team collaborates with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation of injuries and more,” said Christopher Napoli, MS, ATC, Supervisor of Athletic Training Services at NYU Winthrop.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

They are seeking volunteers in multiple areas of their organization. Volunteers are needed for their Friendly Visiting Program. They ask for one hour a week of your time to visit with an isolated, homebound senior for socialization and companionship (time is flexible). They will match you with a senior based upon your location and interests. Volunteers are also needed for their Ombudservice Program. Volunteers are trained to help seniors living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities understand their rights and help them advocate for themselves. Lastly, volunteers are needed for their Health Insurance Counseling Program. Volunteers inform seniors about Medicare and healthcare options to achieve a higher quality of life. This training should be required for Athletic Trainers in every school district on Long Island.” NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers are part of the Hospital’s Sport Medicine program and the Athletic Trainers’ services include community outreach on acute care of injuries. “Although most injuries that occur in athletics are relatively minor, lifethreatening injuries are unpredictable and can occur without warning,” added Tony Marra, Athletic Trainer at Locust Valley High School. “Serious injury can occur during any physical activity – and at any level of participation. Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reﬂecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices ﬂowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception… There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Stop the Bleed Continued From 12 for Americans under the age of 46. In many cases, the deaths are due to blood loss and are preventable. The Stop the Bleed program teaches tactics to recognize lifethreatening bleeding and provide immediate response to control that bleeding including by direct pressure, the use of tourniquets, or packing

(filling) a wound with gauze or clean cloth. Bleeding wounds, such as to the arms and legs, can many times be controlled by direct pressure. Dr. D’Andrea Joseph, Chief of NYU Winthrop’s Division of Trauma and Critical Care, hopes that Stop the Bleed will become a standard lifesaving program just like CPR. The Hospital is encouraging institutions

Budget Passes Thank you to all of the residents who participated in the 2018-2019 school district budget vote and trustee election. Voters approved the proposed budget, 1,642 to 592. With this support, the District will continue to provide a full academic and cocurricular program and provide programmatic enhancements in the area of technology, while also addressing areas of our school infrastructure and providing further security enhancements. Additionally, Proposition

2 to create a new Capital Reserve Fund dedicated to facility upgrades that address school building security was also approved, 1,714 to 495. In the Board of Education election, six candidates ran for three seats in an at-large election. Christopher Di Filippo and Andy Feldman have been re-elected. Chris Ulrich secured the remaining Board of Education seat. As that seat is currently vacant due to resignation, state law provides that the newly elected Board

member assumes the seat immediately and serves out the balance of the unexpired term in addition to the full 3-year term that begins on July 1st. The final vote totals are as follows (listed by ballot position): Bill Weiner–845, Andy Feldman–1,164, Wendy Levitt–935, Chris Ulrich–1,036, Dr. Uzma Syed–1,031, and Christopher Di Filippo–1, 042. Bringing home a total of 38 medals, the Syosset Central School District had a very impressive showing at the 2018 Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair held at Hofstra University in April. Students competed against schools from all

Bethpage High School’s Class of 2018 will be led by valedictorian Smiti Shah and salutatorian Gillian O’Boyle. With a long list of awards and recognitions, Smiti has earned the honor of valedictorian this year. As co-captain of the Regal Eagle robotics team, she has played an integral role in what has been the team’s best season yet and earned the MVP Award at a recent competition. In addition to robotics, she is past-president of the New York Academy of Sciences Junior Academy, which is an outreach program that represents more than 700 international students. Among Smiti’s

list of accolades is being named an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Merit Commended Student and a Regeneron STS semifinalist. She also placed first at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, earning a spot to represent Long Island at the international competition. Smiti plans to attend Duke University to study electrical and computer engineering with a minor in finance. While there, she hopes to continue pursuing her water filtration research, as well as additional womenin-STEM initiatives. Honor Flight Long Island

It was an unforgettable scene at Islip MacArthur Airport this past weekend as teenage U.S. Naval Sea Cadets lined up at 6 a.m. in Honor Guard formation to help send off 50 World War II and Korean War veterans on a memorial trip to Washington DC. The Honor Guard carried the American flag that these veterans had fought so hard to defend, as well as flags representing each service branch of the U.S. military with which the veterans had served – the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. The veterans hailed from villages and towns all over Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with the war stories they shared for this Honor Flightproviding a glimpse into the type of honorable duties performed by the 40,000+ veterans that reside on Long Island.

The Honor Flight veterans spent the entire day in Washington DC, visiting sites including the World War II and Korean War Memorials, as well as The Women in Military Service for America Memorial, before returning to Islip long after taps would have played. The complimentary trip was a small tribute to those from Long Island that served our nation in war. “Your country said that it needed you, and you said, ‘Yes, I will go,’” the 50 veterans were told by Bill Jones, the President of Honor Flight Long Island. “You had never been out of your hometown, yet you found yourselves in places you’d never heard of. At a time of your lives when you should have been concerned with simple things…your high school prom, maybe applying to college…maybe settling

down and starting a family of your own…you, as ordinary citizens were asked to put on a uniform in service to your country. After the morning began with the Naval Sea Cadets’ Honor Guard ceremony (the youths were from the Theodore Roosevelt Division based in East Moriches), the veterans were whisked off on their flight to tour DC sights. Upon return to Islip MacArthur Airport, there was a crowd of more than 200 waiting, and again the Theodore Roosevelt Division Naval Sea Cadets were in formation welcoming the veterans back to Long Island soil, with many a misty eye in

the airport. Some highlights of the service of those on the Honor Flight: Army Air Force mechanic and gunner Stanley Pollack, of Wading River, served aboard B-29 bombers in the Pacific Theater in WWII. “Flying through anti-aircraft was the most harrowing as the enemy shot shells at us in puffs and flak attacks.” Navy Yeoman Peter Pascale, of Ridge, was on a ship one-half mile out from the invasion of Iwo Jima and was in range of the USS Indianapolis when it sunk following a secret mission that directly contributed to the end of WWII. Marine Corps rifleman Emanuel Poretta remembered a “crazy thing” in Korea. He was taking a shower from a truck with hot water. “A red alert sounded, and I found my rifle, helmet and ammo belt. No clothes!” Poretta was left to hand out supplies in his birthday suit. Richard Cardone of Farmingdale was a Navy Damage Controlman during the Korean War. When a terrible accident happened aboard ship, he saved the lives of two trapped men, carrying the unconscious men to safety. “All my training in the Navy really prepared me for it.” Edwin Cartoski, of Greenport, served as a

WWII Marine Corps pilot. When Admiral Halsey lost three destroyers and 100 aircraft to a typhoon, Cartoski flew Corsairs and Hell Cats from dawn to dusk straight off factory lines to California so they could be shipped to the war zone. Sgt. Tess Pierce Garber, from Jericho, was a WWII teletype operator in the Marine Signal Corps. Among the secret daily reports she saw from the battlefield was one with terrible news – it carried the name of the only son of her Mom’s friend; he’d been killed in action. Gennaro Iorio, from Bellmore, was an MD in the US Army Medical Corps in WWII, assigned to hospitals in France and Germany, and he assisted the Chaplain in travels to comfort the injured. George Israel, of Long Beach, was an executive officer aboard a Navy ship in the Korean War that was caught in a typhoon with 200 mph winds and ship rolls of 53 degrees! Army veteran Charles Ludrosky, of Wantagh, used a poncho to cover his fox hole as rains poured down upon him on the front lines in the Korean War. He received three Bronze Stars. Val Marino was a fighter pilot with the Air Force flying daily missions against Russian MIGs in Korea. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying

Cross for completing an amazing 125 missions and also awarded a Silver Star! He later became a research test pilot, and last year was appointed to a Presidential Advisory Board due to his North Korean experiences. Robert Anziano of Islip Terrace joined the Navy, havingbeen in a junior Navy program akin to the Naval Sea Cadets.As an instrument technician at a Naval Air Station, he saluted Tyrone Power every morning – a swashbuckling film star who was also in uniform. Coast Guard veteran William O’Brien, of Massapequa Park, boarded foreign vessels in NY waters and was schooled by the Atomic Energy Commission in the use of radioactive detectors. The Honor Guard of theTheodore Roosevelt Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps includes cadets ages 13 to 18. The cadets train out of the U.S. Coast Guard Station in East Morichesand hail from all over Suffolk County. The Naval Sea Cadet program focuses on developing cadets’ abilities in seamanship, instilling in cadets the virtues of good citizenship, moral principles and public service, and the program inspires young men and women to reach their fullest potential.

Summer Portfolio Program No students left behind in 2018! No more wait lists! The Art League of Long Island’s popular Summer Portfolio Development Program for Teens is expanding to accommodate more high school students looking to build their college portfolios. Along with the additional seats, the Art League is bringing in an additional instructor and a host of new opportunities including a schedule of

special lectures, lessons, and demonstrations by professionals in the fields of art and design. These practicing professionals will share studio techniques and their strategies for success! Program participants will enhance their art portfolios by incorporating the variety of artistic mediums and techniques designed to catch the attention of college admissions officers. instructor Korey Zalk will co-teach along with current instructor Lucas Sheridan in the program’s 23rd year at the Art League. Korey currently teaches art in the Glen Cove City School District, prior to that she taught at the Success Academy in Springfield Gardens and in the North Babylon School District. Korey is not completely new to the Art League. She taught Early Childhood sessions of the

Art League’s Summer Art Adventure Program (SAA) and was a teaching assistant at SAA while earning her Bachelor’s Degree. As a high school student Korey attended the Art League’s Summer Portfolio Program where she went on to earn scholarships to attend the New York Institute of Technology and Dowling College, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Sciences, with a

dual major in Secondary Education and Visual Arts. Lucas Sheridan has been with the Art League’s Summer Portfolio Program since 2016. When not teaching the summer program, Lucas teaches at the Baccalaureate School of Global Education as an IB Studio Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer, a position he has held since 2011. Prior to the Baccalaureate School he was an Art Teacher and

Curriculum Developer at the NYC Lab School. Sheridan earned his BFA in Drawing and Painting at Syracuse University and his MA in Art Education at Brooklyn College. His recent students have applied to and been accepted to a wide range of schools including: Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, The School of Visual Arts,

public exhibition in the Art League’s main gallery featuring artwork created by program participants will be on view August 11th through August 19th.
