this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining
nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.

Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

by the magnificent golf course and its spectacular views of the Peconic Bay, she worked all winter to complete the painting. It was by far, one of the most detailed and challenging paintings of her career. She is currently handling shipping, packaging and framing for the poster. Thompson has also painted the commemorative painting of “THE BLACK COURSE – Bethpage, Over the
Years, N.Y.” in 2002 which was hanging in Governor Pataki’s office in Albany and won a “Best on Long Island” award. Her collection also includes posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot and the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. The 2009 painting also won two Best On Long Island awards. Elaine Thompson’s golf
art is often seen in public places on Long Island and all over the world. Thompson’s painting of the “Lady Golfer”, is a painting of a woman, at Timber Point Country Club, Great River, N.Y. That golfer is dressed in late 1800s attire, with the Great South Bay of Long Island in the background. Thompson is known for her extraordinary ability to paint very fine details that look like photographs. Also

Celebrating Stars Of Recovery The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) is pleased to announce that its 26th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating the Stars of Recovery, held on Thursday, May 2nd, at the Garden City Hotel, raised over $290,000 to support LICADD’s alcohol and drug prevention and intervention programs for children and families. More than 250 community members, elected officials, treatment providers and their family members turned out to support LICADD and ensure that the agency’s life-saving addiction resources and recovery programs remain available to individuals and families across Long Island. John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 28th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 3rd, with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the hospital. New this year is the presentation of the first annual John T. Mather Founder’s Award, which will go to a distinguished individual or organization with an exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of health care in the community. The first recipient of the award will be Gene Gerrard of Mount Sinai, who founded the Golf Classic 28 years ago. The event has raised more than $1 million dollars for the Hospital. Gerrard also
served for 32 years as a member of Mather’s Board of Directors. Registration for the Golf Classic begins at 9 am followed by an 11 am shotgun start. Foursomes will be treated to a barbecue lunch out on the course followed by a cocktail reception and dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dessert and a raffle drawing takes place at 7 p.m. The golf entry fee is $500 per person or $2,000 per foursome. Agency Of The Year The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has been named the 2013 Agency of the Year by the Nassau Division of the National Association of Social Workers of New York State (NASW-NYS Nassau Division). LICADD will be presented with the award at the Swan Club on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at the agency’s Annual Awards Dinner. LICADD provides direct support to over 6,600 individuals and families annually through substance abuse interventions, treatment referrals and recovery support services. The Student Assistance Program (SAP) delivers prevention education trainings to 20,000 students, parents, teachers and administrators in 56 districts. An additional 60,000 individuals are served through the agency’s Open Arms Employee Assistance Program (EAP). In addition to LICADD’s strong track-record of developing evidence-based programing in response to trends in substance abuse and addiction on Long Island, the agency actively pushes for effective public policy as it relates to underage drinking,
substance abuse and access to treatment. LICADD’s clinical team, under the direction of Clinical Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC, is comprised of dedicated and compassionate staff whose professional interests and credentials strengthen the innovative programs and services that LICADD offers. In addition, the agency provides trainings and internship opportunities to over twenty interns each year from graduate level Social Work programs across Long Island and the Greater New York area. RESEARCH DAY - Department of Medicine’s 20th Annual Research Day was held on May 9th. Notwithstanding the busy schedules, residents once again produced exceptional scholarly work; there were 55 posters on exhibit. “Unusual Cause of GI Bleed, Coagulopathy And Elevated Liver Related Tests In Young Male” won the first prize in clinical vignettes section and “Comparative Analysis of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer In A Public Hospital Versus A Private Hospital In New York City Metropolitan Area” won in the Research category.

Long Island’s Summer Playground On Friday, June 14 the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will present a new exhibition highlighting two of Long Island’s summer playgrounds. They are sun-drenched spectacles. Miles and miles of beaches and boardwalks jammed with smiling, tanned and half-dressed people of all ages. The mere mention of Coney Island or Jones Beach evokes summer itself. Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea will take visitors on a fun-filled ride through the history of these two landmarks, exploring the changing, complicated relationship between New Yorkers and their favorite seaside playgrounds. The exhibition will include a dazzling array of objects (including historic beachwear and amusement park artifacts), rare photographs, paintings, prints and archival film clips. Coney Island went from an unknown strip of sand to the world’s most famous seaside resort in the 19th century. People began going there shortly after a shell-crushed road connected it to the rest of Brooklyn in 1829. But it gradually became rowdy entertainment for the masses, home to three major amusement parks,
and the birthplace of the roller coaster and the hot dog. By 1920, accessible by the subway, Coney Island was dubbed the “Nickel Empire.” But not everyone was charmed by the spectacle. Jones Beach was different: “Flowers, lawns, shrubs greet you, instead of papers, lunch boxes and dirt. Nothing is crowded, the sidewalks are wide, the buildings are low and attractively designed. The beach is apparently endless.” Master builder Robert Moses planned Jones Beach as an antidote to what he regarded as the excesses of Coney Island. In addition to forbidding carnival vendors and “honkey tonk,” Jones Beach employed uniformed attendants and enforced strict rules against undressing in cars and leaving litter on the boardwalk or beach. The entire park included beautifully-designed bathhouses and nauticalthemed trash receptacles. By the mid-1930s, Jones Beach welcomed over 100,000 visitors on its busiest summer days. The exhibition will explore these two famous spots not only in their heydays, but will also look at what has happened during their decline, resurrection, and redefinitions over the past several decades.
Where some once thought the sun might be setting on these two historic beaches, millions still pack their bags every summer to go there and make new memories. The perfect summer exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach will give visitors a fun and energetic history of how two iconic coastal areas became lasting people’s playgrounds. This exhibition is sponsored by Suffolk County, Astoria Federal Savings, Empire National Bank, Teachers Federal Credit Union and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea opens Friday, June 14 in the Art Museum. The Suffolk County Water Authority has been voted to have the best tasting water on Long Island by those who casted their ballots in the Long Island Water Conference’s 28th Annual Best-Tasting Water Contest. “I would like to congratulate the Suffolk County Water Authority on this much-deserved accomplishment of having Long Island’s besttasting water,” said Long Island Water Conference Chairman Mike Boufis. “This contest is an excellent way to celebrate drinking water week and further shares with Long Islanders how great our drinking water is. “ During the week of May 6th, the Long Island Water Conference invited residents of Long Island to Farmingdale State College where they were asked to participate in a blind taste-test of tap water from dozens of suppliers across the island. On Wednesday, May 7th the Suffolk County Water Authority was the recipient of the Best Tasting Water in Suffolk County award and on Thursday, May 8th the West Hempstead Water District was the recipient of the Best Tasting Water in Nassau County award. The final competition awarding the Suffolk County Water Authority as the Best Tasting Water on Long Island took place at the first-ever, cosponsored groundwater symposium on Friday, May 10th. The conference served as a culmination to the weeklong celebration of National Drinking Water Week and part of the ongoing effort to encourage residents to choose tap water because of its purity and great taste. Welcome To Wild Africa
Fourthand fifthgrade students in Andrea Feinstein’s class at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District recently held activities to culminate their unit of study on Africa. The unit, which was tied into the class’s nonfiction text and research
curriculum, required each student to conduct online research about the continent and then create various projects to illustrate aspects of its culture and geography. For example, students created “lucky hands,” which are native to Morocco; tie-dyed T-shirts, a practice that originated
in Africa; and cooked a native Maasai meal. To conclude the unit, students transformed their classroom into an African theme and shared their PowerPoint presentations, filled with African facts, with the class and special guests.

In May, Kramer Lane Elementary School in Bethpage held its annual International Feast. The feast, which celebrated culture through food and dance, brought together staff members, students and parents.
All fourth-graders were asked to bring in a dish that best represented their ethnic background, and as a class they practiced cultural dances such as the South African line dance and Tibetan dance. Following the dance
performances, students had the opportunity to enjoy cultural classics including Italian meatballs, Chinese vegetable dumplings, Greek salad, Irish soda bread and German butter cookies.
Town Beaches To Open Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto is pleased to announce that residents will soon have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful beaches as Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening for weekends only, beginning on Saturday, May 25th. “If you’re a beach lover, you probably cannot wait for the official start of summer in June to enjoy the Town’s magnificent beaches,” said Councilman Pinto. “Therefore, I am very happy to announce that four Town beaches will be open on Saturdays and Sundays beginning May 25th. Additionally all Town beaches will be open daily beginning June 22nd.” Councilman Pinto also
said that beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, will be available to residents at the affordable cost of $60. In appreciation for their service, Town residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will get a reduced rate of $25. Senior citizens, 60 and older, who have a Town Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, obtainable at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee, will be able to obtain a beach sticker at no charge. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have
a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee. “The Town of Oyster Bay has spectacular beaches and I am so glad that the Town’s residents will be able to enjoy those beaches throughout the summer,” added Councilman Pinto. “It’s amenities like these that make the Town of Oyster Bay a special place to live.” For more information about Town of Oyster Beaches or about obtaining a beach pass, Town residents should call the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Beach Division at 516.797.4110 or visit the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com.
The Long Island Water Conference and The Suffolk County Water Authority recently joined together to celebrate National Drinking Water Week with the first-ever, co-sponsored groundwater symposium on Long Island on May 10th. Over 200 experts, educators, elected officials, advocates and professionals from the water industry gathered to discuss challenges facing Long Island’s groundwater supply. “Long Islanders are lucky to have a great drinking water supply,” said Mike Boufis, Chairman of the Long Island Water Conference. “Our groundwater is pure and reliable, so it is important that we preserve this precious natural resource for generations to use. We hope to continue to hold events where we can foster public awareness and promote discussion about protecting our groundwater supply.” The Long Island
groundwater symposium featured panels of professionals in the water supply industry and elected officials discussing water availability and quality, infrastructure management and protecting Long Island’s groundwater supply for future generations. Experts provided insight on a variety of topics including water conservation, preparedness for natural disasters, and state regulations. “This was a significant day for Long Islanders as we discussed the status of our water supply in both Nassau and Suffolk County,” said Jeff Szabo, CEO of Suffolk County Water Authority. “In order to continue supplying high quality water at the lowest cost, addressing different issues and allowing professionals to voice opinions is necessary. Events like the symposium, where everyone can share ideas are vital to the success of the industry.”
In addition to discussing Long Island’s groundwater issues, the 28th annual “Best Tasting Water Contest” was conducted at the symposium. Suffolk County Water Authority was declared the winner with the “Best Tasting Water” on Long Island. The conference served as a culmination of the weeklong celebration of National Drinking Water Week.

Registration for the Town’s pools will begin on Saturday May 25th, Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Chris Coschignano has announced. All Town pools will open for the season on Saturday June, 22nd. “Enjoying all of the Town’s pools is just one of the many fun activities available to Town residents this summer,” Councilman Chris Coschignano said. “Look out for our summer guide, which will be arriving in your mail boxes in the coming weeks, detailing all the great programs the Town will be hosting this summer.” The Town of Oyster Bay has four community park pools open to Town of Oyster Bay residents, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post, PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, as well as Tappen Pool in Glenwood Landing. Beginning on May 25th, registration will take place daily and will be held from noon until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and
holidays at the community park pools and from noon until 5 p.m. at Tappen Pool. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, registration will take place from noon until 7 p.m. at all facilities. Beginning on June 28th at Tappen Pool and July 2nd at the Community Park Pools, registration will be held during hours of operation. Town residents interested in registering must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number required. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years of age and under. Town pools will be open daily from June 22nd through Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd. Residents who wish to learn the hours of operation should visit the Town of Oyster Bay website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Swimming lessons will be available at the community park pools, at an additional cost, for members ages five and older, registration for which is done by mail.

based crafts with them. They also engaged in literature-rich, structured appropriate play. Milk and cookies were served to enhance the activity.
Bethpage High School senior and basketball star Nicole D’Angio has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Mount Saint Mary College. Having played basketball since the third grade, Nicole is a four-year varsity player who served as captain of the girls varsity basketball team this year. She has been named All-Class and a ScholarAthlete, and is one of the top rebounders for Long Island’s 2012-13 basketball season, with an average of
15 rebounds per game. Nicole also plays on the school’s varsity lacrosse and soccer teams and has been a member of the AAU Long Island Lightning basketball team since the sixth grade. This year, she was one of 20 basketball players chosen to play for the Nassau Senior All-Star team. She was joined at her signing by parents Linda and Steven D’Angio, grandfather Victor D’Angio and uncle Rob Kneuer, as well as Principal Michael
Spence, varsity coach Joseph Inghilterra, Mount Saint Mary head coach Randy Ognibene and AAU coach Charlene DeCastro. Nicole will be receiving a partial academic scholarship to the college. “Nicole was definitely our leader on the court,” Coach Inghilterra said. “She was a role model to all of the girls. There is no doubt she will be a successful basketball player.”
