Stony Brook Children’s Hospital was presented with the Medical Visionary Award on Thursday, May 8th, at Make-AWish Suffolk County’s 20th Annual Bouquet of Wishes Spring Dinner. The event took place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook and hosted over 800 guests. The Foundation presented this award to Stony Brook Children’s for the institution’s meritorious leadership in advanced and innovative pediatric specialty care. “It is an honor to receive the Medical Visionary Award from the Make-AWish Foundation of Suffolk County,” said Margaret M. McGovern, M.D., Ph.D., Physician-in-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “At Stony Brook Children’s we value our partnerships with organizations like Make-A-Wish that help us to care for all the needs of the sickest children. It is an organization that does an extraordinary job granting wishes to so many of our pediatric patients.” “Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is Make-A-Wish Suffolk County’s largest referral source for wish children,” said Karine Hollander, President and CEO, Make-A-Wish Suffolk County. “We see firsthand the results of the treatment Stony Brook provides; enhancing children’s health both physically and emotionally. Together, we work in partnership to heal a child’s spirit.”

Dr. McGovern along with Robert Parker, MD, Director, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, who accepted the award on behalf of Stony Brook Children’s, are members of the advisory board for Make-A-Wish, Suffolk County. “The Make-a-Wish dinner is always a wonderful event, and this night was no exception,” said Robert Parker, MD, Director, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “I think what Make-a-Wish does is build memories, for the child and their families. I can’t think of a better organization to which to donate time, resources and money.” During the evening, children with lifethreatening medical conditions from across Suffolk County were granted wishes - and a few were past or current patients from Stony Brook Children’s like 17 year-old Rachel Ragone. In March of 2013, the Manorville resident was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a primary bone cancer that affects mainly children and adolescents. For almost a year, Rachel was receiving treatment at Stony Brook University Cancer Center under the supervision of Dr. Parker. In June of 2013, Rachel was given the opportunity to grant a wish through Make-A-Wish Suffolk

County. Dreaming of walking around in art museums and cobblestone streets blanketed with history, Rachel’s wish was to go to Europe. Proud of her family history, Rachel and her family will be headed to Rome, Italy for a 9-day journey. “Knowing that I had this wish gave me

something to look forward to while finishing up my treatment,” said Ragone. Rachel completed her treatment in January and was medically cleared to travel. “We are going to Rome, there is so much to do there, and I can’t wait to eat the food!” “A wish gives the patient something to hold on to and look forward to during some of the

darkest moments,” said Lauren Sharaby, MS, CCLS, Certified Child Life Specialist, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “Make-A-Wish gives these kids control over a situation; making a wish gives our patients power, hope and improves their quality of life.” Sharaby, who attended the Make-A-Wish dinner,

works firsthand with a lot of the patients who grant wishes through Make-A-Wish. “It lets their imagination run wild while taking the focus off of needles and medicine and hair loss. It gives these children the opportunity to be a kid again and it renews their spirit so they can continue to fight for a cure.”

Counting Down The Days To The End

As I count down the days until my final day of high school, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the friends that I’ve made, the things that I’ve done, and the chapter of my life that is now coming to a close. These past few years have gone by so fast. From the moment I walked into SJB on the first day of my freshman year, I knew that my final day would be hard. I’ve made special bonds here. I’ve done great things here. St. John’s has afforded me the ability to attend Villanova in the fall. Without SJB, my high school years would have been mediocre. Now, as a

graduating student, I feel torn between emotions. It is a bittersweet end to the greatest part of my life thus far. As I close my locker for the last few times, I am just beginning to realize how special my time here was. I’ve never felt so accepted by a group of my peers. It is with a heavy heart that I write this article. I am going to miss every aspect of SJB. From the Cougar Crazies to Mrs. Walsh screaming in the hallways, St. John’s has been a pleasure. My years here have inﬂuenced my future. I’ve just qualified to row in the National Championship for St. John’s. Hopefully, I can

give back a medal to a school that has given me so much. If I could start over as a freshman, I would do it all the same. There is nothing about St. John’s that I would have changed. If you are on the fence about sending your son or daughter to St. John’s, do it. It is the smartest investment you’ll ever make. St. John’s is an environment that breeds leaders. Coming from a senior, SJB is a place where a family is formed. I would not trade my years here for anything. They say high school is the best time of your life, and so far, this rings true.

Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time ﬂies while you’re busy

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.

On Saturday, June 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its Second Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at Head of Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Presenting sponsors for the event are the Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center. Although there is no entry fee, all registrants are encouraged to help raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Once again, Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, and Board Member, US Sailing, will be in attendance. Ms. Riley was the 2002 IC45 World Champion and 1992 America’s Cup winner. Additionally, in her third of four Cups, she was CEO and Captain of America True, the only woman to manage an America’s Cup sailing team. In addition to the Regatta, there will be the Paddling for Poker

event, which is part of the Regatta, to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Registration is at 1 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats; at each boat, they receive a card. Once they receive five cards, they have made their poker hand. The highest hand wins a prize to be awarded at the awards dinner. All participants must finish by 4 p.m. This event is open to all kayakers and paddleboarders. An awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by the Old Salts Band. This year’s theme for the dinner is “Red, White, and Blue.” Awards will be given for Highest Fundraising Individual and Highest Fundraising Team in each category. In addition, the winning poker hand will be announced. There is no charge for dinner to all participants who raise a minimum of $100. This year, The

Alzheimer’s Regatta will have a special treat for those who want to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Vessel Christeen is a 40foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. Twenty-eight minutes and thirty seven seconds after the starting horn sounded, 12 year-old Luke Anderson crossed the finish line on a beautiful Saturday morning elated with his accomplishment. A leukemia survivor, Luke joined his family and other participants at the Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon’s 5K race. This 8th annual event began in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Luke’s mother, Evelyn Anderson, a former South Setauket,

resident, who wanted to celebrate her son’s life by running a race in his honor. In 2013, Luke ran with his older brother, Patrick, and their mom, and this year the sports-enthusiastic family, including younger sisters, Ciara and Shannon and dad Todd, drove from their New Milford CT. home the night before to rest up in a local hotel and get to the start line with 609 other participants – onequarter of them supporters of Friends of Karen. “It was amazing to see the support of all these people, running, walking and

raising funds for Friends of Karen,” said Evelyn. “And heartwarming for our family that we have an opportunity to give back to this organization in this fun way.” Since 1978, Friends of Karen has been providing emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a lifethreatening illness and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 12,900 children in the New York tri-state region.

Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto reminds residents that seasonal beach stickers may be purchased beginning on Saturday, May 10th, so that Town residents may get their beach stickers ahead of time and avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend, when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends. “So many residents enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay and eagerly look forward to the first opportunity to enjoy those beaches during the Memorial Day weekend,” Councilman Pinto said. “Town residents, who purchase a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, will avoid the possibility of waiting in line during opening weekend.” The Councilman announced that beach stickers will be for sale daily, beginning on May 10, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay from 9 until 11 a.m. and from 1 until 2:30 p.m. In order to purchase a beach

sticker, residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration. In addition, residents must come in the vehicle they will be driving to the beaches as stickers are affixed to vehicles at the time of purchase. “Fun-filled days at Town of Oyster Bay beaches are not far off and the Town’s beach sticker is a great value,” added Councilman Pinto. “It may be used at all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents will have an opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay

throughout the summer.” Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening for weekends only on Saturday, May 24th. All Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open seven days a week beginning on Saturday, June 21st. The beaches will remain open through Labor Day, Monday, September 1st. Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners who missed paying their 2013-2014 School taxes by the May 12th deadline, that they can still avoid additional interest and fees beyond the standard two percent late payment penalty. Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at 516.624.6400 if they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after June 2nd cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501. Receiver Stefanich pointed out, “Failure to pay late taxes before the collection warrant expires will result in a delinquent

tax lien proceeding with the possibility of the lien being sold next February. Continued failure to pay all taxes levied against the property will result in your loss of the property”. In July, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Stefanich advises homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at 516.571.2090 to determine the amount in arrears. They may also visit that office at 1 West Street, Mineola. Receiver Stefanich noted, “I want to make sure that property taxpayers in Oyster Bay do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Outstanding Achievement Amanda DeMel is one of seventeen exceptional students to be honored recently with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. She earned the award for her passion, perseverance, enthusiasm, outstanding character and academic achievement, as well as her willingness to help others. Amanda received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD student Amanda DeMel is an asset to the Nassau BOCES Iris Wolfson High School community. Over the past two years, she has grown and developed into an independent, mature and determined young woman. Her high academic standards, passion for education and

love of learning make her a role model for her peers. Amanda is responsible, caring and a conscientious individual who challenges herself and those around her to achieve and perform at a higher level. “These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” District Superintendent Thomas Rogers said of the honorees at the awards ceremony. “They have shown the true spirit of George Farber as they have bounced back from adversity, shown kindness to other students, exhibited an excellent work ethic, shown commitment to their work, been eager to share their knowledge and made contributions to their communities.” Outstanding students have been earning this prestigious award since 2007. It currently stands

as a memorial to former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion and drive for improving the lives of students at Nassau BOCES was only surpassed by his love and care for them. Farber was the longestserving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009. “The students we honor today have shown passion and drive to progress towards personal and professional goals,” said Nassau BOCES Board Member Susan Bergtraum. “They have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their courses of study, exemplary characteristics including honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards, and commitment to community and school improvement.”

and Ms. Martin did her project on Math in Archery. Letter Of Intent

Bethpage High School senior Christian Ferruzza has signed a Letter of Intent to play lacrosse for Mercy College. As captain of the school’s varsity team, he was given a partial academic and partial athletic scholarship to the college. Christian has been playing lacrosse since the fifth grade on an outside league and was an

All-County and Academic All-Conference player last year. “I just love the game and being with my teammates,” he said. Christian was also captain and quarterback of Bethpage High School’s varsity football team and is a member of the National Honor Society, National French Honor Society and Athletes Helping Athletes.

He was an avid participant in the district’s Relay for Life and Lax for Hope fundraisers. Bringing History To Life

musicians and scientists to actors and actresses. As part of their reading unit on biographies, students researched historical characters; learned about their accomplishments, challenges and personality traits; and explained how their actions contributed

to the sequence of events in their lives. The second-graders learned how to synthesize and analyze critically, paying close attention to character relationships, challenges and common traits of leaders.

The 6,000 pinwheels displayed on a Stony Brook University field represents the annual lives lost to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The field of pinwheels is also symbolic of a growing theme of the annual Ride for Life and for Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient, advocate and founder of the Ride for Life Organization. Pendergast, the ALS specialists at Stony Brook Medicine, and supporters of the Ride for Life envision that like the pinwheels, a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease is out there with an answer ‘blowing in the wind.’ “Hope is alive, and there is no doubt in my mind we will eventually find a cure. That’s why we press forward,” said Pendergast, at the Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony took place on the Stony Brook University campus on May 10th. The ceremony is the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients that ends in Manhattan on May 17th. The Ride for Life, which raises awareness and funds for ALS research, began in 1998. During the ceremony, the Ride for Life donated $160,000 to Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association-certified center on Long Island. “This day is about the Riders, the people who support them, those who provide their medical care, and the researchers who are working tirelessly to find a cure for ALS,” said L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, CEO, Stony Brook University Hospital, and Senior VP for Health Systems at Stony Brook Medicine. “We salute the courage of all the patients and remember those who have been lost due to ALS.” “All of the pinwheels we see do represent the many lives taken because of ALS, but we see something more,”

said Al Jordan, a Ride for Life committee member and Associate Dean of Student & Minority Affairs at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “I am going to borrow a phrase. It is a ‘field of dreams’ with hope that we will soon celebrate a cure.” Since its inception the Ride for Life has raised close to $5 million to fund ALS research and clinical services. Through the ALS Center of Excellence, Stony Brook clinicians and neuroscience researchers are conducting research to develop better targeted treatments and launch clinical trials of new investigative therapies against ALS.

“The Ride for Life is an amazing experience, and I hope to go the distance,” said Frank Wojcik, 52, of Commack, a patient at Stony Brook and first time Rider. Diagnosed in January 2013, Wojcik said Pendergast inspired him to join the Ride for Life. He has learned more about the disease during his patient journey and thinks that as science continues to gain more knowledge about ALS, a cure may emerge at some point.

Field Of Dreams “Right now what has been most inspiring is the support along the way, especially all of the kids at the schools on Long Island. They give you so much energy, and hope,” added Wojcik. This year a record number public schools are participating in the Ride for Life. According to Pendergast, more than 50 schools from East Hampton to Manhattan are taking part, some with donations directly from student efforts. An estimated 8,000 Long Island students this month are learning first-hand about the ALS Ride for Life cause. Two ALS patients at the event were strong enough to walk the day’s trek onto the Stony Brook University campus. Clinton Strait, of East Northport, who continues to work as a project manager, said he felt inspired and would hopefully walk on other days during the Ride. Paul Weisman, of Bohemia, walked the Ride course for two days prior to the Stony Brook event. On hand to support the Ride for Life and Stony Brook event were New York State Senator John J. Flanagan, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn. The event concluded with the Remembrance Ceremony – when the names of 90 people lost to ALS – representing the number of minutes between deaths from ALS in the United States – were read aloud. As the gusts of a coming rainstorm picked up, the families and friends of patients stood around the pinwheel “field of dreams.” Family members then read their loved one’s name aloud, a bell was rung, and a balloon released into the air to honor each of them.

Blood Drive A Success Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town collected 101 pints of blood at its April 24th Drive, and thanked Town employees and local residents for their assistance in making the drive a success. Originally slated for March 6th, the Town of Oyster Bay was asked to move their date by the New York Blood Center to accommodate other blood drives affected by the recent snow storms. Despite the move, the Town’s Blood drive exceeded its goals. “We have always been able to count on Town employees and residents to roll up their sleeves for our blood drives,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that each pint of blood, when broken down into component parts, could potentially help save three lives, 303 people will benefit from the donations made on April 24th. And that’s what giving blood is

all about…saving lives.” The Councilman went on to say that while blood donors are heroes in his book for keeping our area’s hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood, a successful blood drive takes the hard work of Town employees, who help with outreach and scheduling appointments. “My deep appreciation goes to both donors and those behind the scenes,” Councilman Muscarella said. If people need blood, there is only one place to turn…volunteer blood donors. The problem is that nationwide, the average donation rate is only five percent of the eligible population, and here on Long Island, the donation rate is less than two percent of eligible donors, so there is a constant strain on supplies and a constant need for donations. For the nearly five million people who receive blood donations annually, your donation can make the difference between life and death.” The Councilman added that the Town’s summer blood drive is scheduled for Thursday, August 7th. receive a registration packet for this year’s program,” Councilwoman Alesia continued. “All others may call the Recreation Division of the Town’s Department of Parks at 516.797.4125, and a registration packet will be sent to you that you can fill out and mail in.” It is important to note that registration is by mail only as walk-ins will not be accepted. Councilwoman Alesia noted that the fee for the Summer Recreation Program is $275 for one child, and $100 for each additional child within a family of more than two. The registration deadline is June 20th, 2014. The Summer Recreation Program will be held at Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park in Farmingdale, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, and Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. The

program begins Monday, July 7th, and runs through Friday, August 15th. There are both morning and afternoon sessions each day and children may attend both. However, no supervision is provided between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Parents must make arrangements for their children during this time. “The Town’s Summer Recreation Program is an excellent opportunity for children to participate in wholesome activities right in their own communities,” Councilwoman Alesia commented. “Both parents and kids love the program. Principal Gene Fennell recently announced the names of 11 seniors who received a New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence. This program provides scholarship assistance to outstanding New York State high school graduates. Each year, 8,000 scholarships are awarded - up to 2,000 scholarships of $1,500 and 6,000 scholarships of

$500 to top scholars from registered New York State high schools. Awards are based on student grades in certain Regents exams and can be used towards tuition for four year of undergraduate studies in New York State. The Holy Trinity students receiving a $1,500 scholarship are: Maddalena Tondi of Merrick and Michael Dormer of Lynbrook. The following each received

Have you ever heard of the saying, “It takes a village?” It really does take a village to raise and teach a child. For the past fifteen-plus years, Village Elementary School has had a relatively anonymous member of its village. That honor belongs to fourth grade teacher Ms. McEvoy’s wonderful Aunt Maryann. Aunt Maryann hand stitches a quilt annually to commemorate the “favorite book’”

segment of the fourth grade curriculum. First, each child designs a square to represent their book. The students use colorful markers, bits of fabric, and a whole lot of imagination. Then Aunt Maryann works her magic and combines all the squares into a lovely quilt. This year, for the first time, Aunt Maryann sewed quilts for all three fourth grade classes. The school wishes to

extend a heartfelt thank you to its quilting “aunt” and benefactor for the many years and tireless hours she’s dedicated to make and donate one-of-a kind quilts for the school. The Village family cherishes these beautiful quilts - which are displayed in various locations around the school - and sincerely appreciates her hard work and generosity.
