uring the last week of April, musical groups from Bethpage High School attend the Festival Disney in Walt Disney World, Florida. Based upon their performances during the festival, each of the groups – concert band, jazz ensemble and chorale – all received the highest honors with a rating of “excellent” from the judges. The three soloists were tenth grader Alec Cavaciuti, eleventh grader Emily Marczak and senior Michael Rotunno.

Three Months & Still Swimming Strong By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I
don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so
much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

Town Beaches To Open Residents will soon have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful beaches as Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening. Beginning May 23rd, four Town beaches will be open on Saturdays and Sundays. On June 20th, all Town beaches will be open daily. Beach lovers can take advantage and enjoy the Town’s magnificent beaches during the weekend before they open full time for the summer. Beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster Bay
beaches, will be available to residents at the affordable cost of $60. In appreciation for their service, Town residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will get a reduced rate of $30. Senior citizens, 60 and older, who have a Town Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, obtainable at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee, will be able to obtain a beach sticker at no charge. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability
insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee. Pool Registration Fridays, weekends and holidays and from Noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginning on June 27th, registration will be held during hours of operation at Tappen Pool and at the four Community Park Pools. Town residents interested in registering for a season pass must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years of age and under. Enjoying the Town’s pools is just one of the many fun activities available to our Town residents this summer. Look out for our summer guide, which will soon arrive in your mailbox, detailing all the great programs the Town will be offering this summer. Town pools will be open daily from June 20 through Labor Day, Monday,

Swimming lessons will be available to pool members at the Community Park pools, at an additional cost, for members ages five and older. Once a resident joins the pool, they may obtain the paperwork to sign their child up and mail in the registration materials. The Town of Oyster Bay also has a swim team that is available FREE of charge to pool members 6 to 16 years of age in which they can compete against other Nassau County Municipal Swim Conference teams. Bryan Pisarz was honored recently with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. He earned the award for his talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. Bryan received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Bryan Pisarz, a Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD student attending Nassau BOCES Iris Wolfson High School, where, with the support of devoted parents and caring educators, he has been able to achieve some impressive goals. Bryan has steadily improved his knowledge in several academic areas including history and geography. He has taken his place on the High Honor roll and earned college credit from both Nassau Community and Farmingdale State colleges. Outside of school, Bryan is and avid skater, having competed in figure skating for the past nine years. He now devotes his time and expertise as a youth volunteer, helping young children who are new to skating. He is considering building on
this experience to become a coach. Understanding the value of hard work, Bryan is preparing applications for civil service examinations and is open to a variety of career fields.

Golf Classic Set John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 30th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 1st, with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. Musical Honors
During the last week of April, musical groups from Bethpage High School attend the Festival Disney in Walt Disney World, Florida. Based upon their performances during the festival, each of the groups – concert band, jazz ensemble and chorale
– all received the highest honors with a rating of “excellent” from the judges. In addition, the jazz ensemble was named Best in Class and three of our student musicians were named outstanding soloists – a designation only seven total students out of the thousands in

Each of the honorees was celebrated for a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. The young scholars received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. “These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” Deputy Superintendent Dr. Robert J. Hanna said of the young award winners. “They are a wonderful testament to the success of the instructional programs we offer. Informative Presentation Health students at Syosset High School were treated to an informative and eye-opening assembly on May 5th, when they welcomed attorney Mark Schneider to the little theater for multiple sessions about Internet safety and practices. Schneider spoke to the 11th-graders in earnest about the legal and social consequences of their behavior online and on their phones. From posting personal or damaging information
on Facebook and Twitter, to to using social media to bully others, Schneider pulled up numerous accounts of how this behavior has led to real-life impacts, such as termination from employment, prison time and even death. The principal message: what is shared over the Internet or through the phone has a permanent record, and many agencies, including law enforcement, can subpoena those records at any time.
The 45-minute presentations gave students much food for thought, as Schneider drew from his experiences as an attorney to illustrate the seriousness of poor choices in cyberspace. The assembly was arranged as a volunteer gesture by Schneider to help fulfill the school’s commitment to character education and provide space to discuss human INFORMATIVE PRESENTATION - Attorney Mark Schneider delivered a powerful health and safety issues presentation to students at Syosset High School about the dangers of poor choices that greatly affect while utilizing modern technology.
