With few restrictions and declining COVID-19 infection rates, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced the return of a variety of free weekday senior citizen activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services in community centers throughout the
Town. These popular programs, which had been suspended throughout the last year due to the global coronavirus pandemic, will return on Monday, May 17th and run through Friday, June 25th. Line dancing, exercise and tai chi classes are just some of the activities seniors
can enjoy as part of this year’s program. “Senior citizen activities are returning this month and I invite our residents to participate in these free activities, where they can once again enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active,” said Supervisor Saladino.
“Our senior activities are some of the most popular programs the Town offers, and I expect this year to be in higher demand than ever before as seniors can finally get out and be active as infection rates decline and vaccination rates climb!” The following programs will be
offered: line dancing, tai chi, exercise, book club, and more opportunities for socialization. Activities will run each day of the week, Monday through Friday. Seniors interested in any of these activities must reserve a spot in advance. Due to the pandemic and restrictions currently in place, class sizes are

Hicksville Middle School Robotics Team Wins SBPLI First Lego League Championship Congratulations to Hicksville Middle School robotics team, Team Meteorites Cubed, for winning the most prestigious prize, the Champion’s Award, at the virtual School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI) FIRST Lego League Challenge Championship on April
17. The Champion’s Award celebrates the team that embodies the FIRST Lego League experience by embracing its core values while achieving excellence and innovation. Based on their performance, Team Meteorites Cubed also received an
invitation to compete remotely at the FIRST Lego League Virtual Open International Competition in Greece this June. All three of Hicksville Middle School’s robotics teams, including Team Meteorites, Team Meteorites Squared and Team Meteorites
Cubed, participated in the championship competition. Each team submitted videos of their robot, answered questions from judges, and took part in a 25-minute session to go over the robot, project and core values. Team Meteorites won the first place Robot Performance Award for
scoring the most points during the robot game portion, whereas Team Meteorites Cubed came in second place. Team Meteorites also won the Core Values Award which celebrates a team with extraordinary enthusiasm, spirit, respect and an understanding of the
importance of teamwork. The FIRST Lego League Challenge is a technologyfocused competition that combines a hands-on robotics program with a sports-like atmosphere. It introduces students to the experience of applying math, science and technology to realworld problem solving.

Town Honors 850 Frontline Healthcare Heroes During Hospital Week Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand honored healthcare heroes at a special ceremony at Catholic Health’s St. Joseph Hospital in recognition of Hospital Week. With more than 2 million confirmed cases in New York over the past year, the Town has continued to take opportunities to recognize those fighting on the frontlines of the pandemic. “The Town Board and I think it is incredibly important to continue to spotlight our Healthcare Heroes and all they do to keep us safe,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Words cannot adequately express the sense of pride we have in the astounding dedication and professionalism our healthcare heroes
continue to display throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To commemorate the key role they continue to play throughout this pandemic, we are so proud to present these Healthcare Heroes with a Town of Oyster Bay TOB Strong Frontline Hero Pin to wear as a keepsake and a reminder of all the amazing things they’ve done during one of the most trying times in our Town’s history!” With May 9th through 15th marking National Hospital Week, Town officials saw it a fitting opportunity to highlight health systems and health care workers and the innovative ways they are supporting the needs of their community members, especially during the pandemic. “We are forever indebted to our healthcare professionals
as they continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic on the frontline,” said Councilman Hand. “It’s important for us to let our courageous doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals know that they and their sacrifices have not been forgotten.” In addition to presenting all staff members with pins, officials also presented ‘thank yous’ from submitted by residents as part of the Town’s Healthcare Hero Recognition Program. In April, the Town invited residents to submit ‘thank you’ notes, cards and letters to be distributed to healthcare professionals, reminding them of the gratitude people feel toward all they have contributed throughout the pandemic.

Candidate In Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Long Island Student of the Year Competition

Rachel Perlmutter, a senior at PlainviewOld Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School (POBJFKHS) in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, has been nominated to be a candidate in the Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Long Island Student of the Year Competition. “I’m honored to have been granted this opportunity, not only because many of my family members have suffered from various forms of cancer throughout the years, but also because I was the first ever candidate to have been nominated from the Plainview-Old Bethpage community ” said Rachel. “As soon as I gained that knowledge, I knew I had not one, but two goals: to raise $30,000 in the span of seven weeks, and to establish my legacy in the community, that has
shown me how to embody the characteristics of a true leader.” The Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s Students of the Year competition is a philanthropic leadership development program for exemplary high school students. During the campaign, participants foster professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing, and project management in order to raise funds for LLS. The funds raised benefit the LLS mission: to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The title Student(s) of the Year is awarded to the candidate or co-candidates in each community that raise the most funds during the seven-week competition. Rachel formed a team
that was composed of approximately 25 of her peers who came together to fundraise and promote the campaign. Together, with the help of their families, the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, community, and local businesses, they raised over $31,000 and were a part of a movement that raised just under a million dollars from Long Island. “We are so proud of Rachel and her classmates for representing our District as they contributed to such an important cause,” said Dr. Mary O’Meara, Superintendent of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District. “The leadership qualities that these students have shown is a true testament to how dedicated our students are to helping their community.”

At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. Imagine your son or daughter, your grandchildren, your own brother or sister, or parent experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence or severe depression. Imagine your family torn apart by circumstances out of your control. If you were connected to a crisis situation you would be very comforted to know that an entire community of supporters have made it possible for your loved one to find professional help and healing free of charge. So consider joining that network of support and be a part of the Hope House Ministries’ family. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced that the Town has an informative guide available to residents interested in planting Native Plant Species in their home gardens. Native plants are traditionally found in a local region, where they are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions. This makes them hardy, more resistant to insects and disease, and generally easier to maintain. “With the spring season upon us, the concept of home gardening interests many people, but those without green thumbs may be unsure where to begin. Getting a quick
explanation of local plant species that are easy to maintain, as well as provide environmental benefits, may be just what an aspiring gardener needs,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “There are many plant species that help improve air quality, while attracting butterflies, bees or birds.” As gardeners continue to discover benefits of native plants, local retailers have been stocking these and other species. Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during
the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due
to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing
donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation
center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted
additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggiWhitton (D - Glen Cove) is joining the Jepp family, LiveOnNY and local organ donation advocates in an urgent search for a living donor for Vivian, who has endured years of dialysis and two previous attempts at transplants. Vivian Jepp, a Port Washington mother of 10-year-old triplet boys is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Legislator DeRiggiWhitton met with Vivian on Thursday, April 26 during a dome-lighting ceremony commemorating National Donate Life Month. Her search for a donor was sidelined in the spring of 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that public health conditions have improved and stabilized, the race is on to find her a match. “Vivian’s story is heartbreaking - and it is a call to action for all of
us,” Legislator DeRiggiWhitton said. “In recent months, I have witnessed the miracle of organ donation first-hand and seen how a living donor continued to thrive after giving one of my dearest friends her kidney - and with it, a renewed lease on life. If you have either A or O-type blood, I urge you to get screened as a potential donor and consider giving Vivian, her husband, and their three boys the greatest gift of all.” Vivian has navigated health struggles throughout much of her adult life. Shortly after graduating college 33 years ago, Vivian was diagnosed with systemic lupus - an inflammatory disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissue. The disease commonly affects a patient’s joints, skin and kidneys. Vivian was an elementary school teacher in New York City until five years ago, when
her kidneys began to fail. Soon thereafter, she began dialysis treatments. Due to the extensive strain dialysis places on human body and the lengthy wait time for a deceased donor, a living donor represents Vivian’s best chance for surviving and thriving. However, it can be challenging to find willing living donors, and New York State in general has historically been one of the worst states for organ donor registration - a place where the most patients are waiting for the fewest organs. Vivian, who has Type A blood, can receive a transplant from living donors with either A or O-type blood.
