Breaking Borders

Good Shepherd Hospice, a member of Catholic Health Services, has been recognized by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) for its vigil volunteer program, which offers an innovative approach to caring for the dying. Vigil volunteers, dubbed Compassionate Shepherds, are specially trained to comfort the dying at Good Shepherd’s inpatient center in Port Jefferson.

This program enables family members and friends to leave the bedside for a respite, knowing their loved ones are not alone. “The feedback we’ve received since the program began three years ago has been extremely positive,” said Chief Administrative Officer Mary Ellen Polit. “Our Compassionate Shepherds have added another level of support that Good Shepherd is able to provide to dying

people and their families and allows us to fulfill and extend our mission of compassionate care.” The recognition from HANYS is part of its “NYS Triple Aim” campaign, which focuses on how New York hospitals and health systems are finding new ways to improve population health, enhance the quality of patient care and reduce the cost of health care, despite fiscal restraints.

The State University of New York and Nassau Community College today announced the appointment of Dr. W. Hubert Keen as president of NCC. The appointment was approved at a special meeting of the SUNY Board of Trustees today and by the Board of Trustees at the campus earlier this week. Dr. Keen has served as the president of SUNY’s Farmingdale State College since 2007. His NCC

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. was recently awarded a $10,000 Veterinary Assistance Grant from Banfield Foundation®. This grant will assist owners undergoing economic hardships keep their pets healthy and offset costs in emergency medical situations so they will not be forced to surrender or euthanize their beloved dogs and cats. Last Hope is a non-profit organization striving to save death-due, abandoned and stray animals. The

all– volunteer, non-profit group cares for dogs from municipal shelters, and cats from shelters as well as off the streets before seeking approved adopters. In 2015, Last Hope placed 620 cats and 245 dogs in loving, responsible homes. “The Banfield Foundation® grant helps our rescue to be more proactive,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope, “We can now intervene in special needs cases with veterinary aid; and, hopefully, prevent people from making the

heart-breaking decision to give up their pets, or worse, be forced to euthanize four-legged family members because of financial distress.” Community outreach, including a Fix-AFeral program and free rabies vaccine clinics, is part of Last Hope’s mission, whereas assisting individuals with their owned pets occurs infrequently. “The generous Banfield Foundation® grant will enable us to expand our reach. Most of the donation

money we work so hard to raise must be spent on the animals in our care. In the past we’ve been able to help a limited number of desperate, owned pets. Because of the Banfield Foundation®, Last Hope responded in two recent cases- “Nelly” a young Sheltie needing her cardiac ailment diagnosed, then a hole in her heart repaired surgically; and “Oreo” an eight-year-old cat suffering from a urinary tract infection,” said Stuurman, “Thanks to the Banfield Foundation® we’ll be able

to respond to more pleas for veterinary aid.” The Banfield Foundation® works to keep people together with their pet companions and provides grants to nonprofit organizations to support these efforts. All too often sick, injured or abused animals die because their caretakers can’t afford to pay for the urgent care needed to save them. If the animals are surrendered to town shelters, their medical issues are such that they may be put down there.

Our tenuous economy has increased the need for veterinary assistance grants. One hundred and nineteen students at Hicksville Middle School were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society at a candlelight ceremony held at Bernard H. Braun Auditorium. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso encouraged the students to continue their hard work and

dedication to excellence, and commended them for their inductions to the prestigious group. Principal Mara Jorisch administered the pledge of the Verisage Chapter, and National Junior Honor Society officers helped to welcome the inductees to the Hicksville Middle School Chapter. Criteria for entry

included students’ demonstration of academic prowess and a commitment to service and leadership. The event, which culminated with a reception for inductees and their families, recognized the well-rounded excellence of students at Hicksville Middle School.

Among the Best Four Syosset High School students are being honored for creativity in the visual arts. Two of the school’s photography students were chosen to feature their works in the 2016 Long Island’s Best: Young Artists exhibit at the Heckscher Museum in Huntington. The photos of Sanaya Dhablania and Evan Garry are on display at the museum through May 15th. Their works are among 83 selected for this

annual juried exhibit, now in its 20th year. Breaking Borders Seven student leaders from Syosset and Freeport high schools have been getting together to talk about the things that make them both different and the same while also sharing opinions on issues of topical interest through a pilot program called Breaking Borders. Last month, a group of students from Syosset High School visited Freeport High School to kick off the program. This month, the Freeport students came to Syosset for a 60-minute intimate exchange in the school courtyard that covered topics such as immigration, school security, gun control and the presidential race. According to Syosset High School’s Breaking Borders program adviser David Steinberg, Syosset

sophomore Jake Gould came to him about starting the program after participating in a summer program involving Israeli and Palestinian students. Jake said the program opened his eyes to the importance of understanding views from different cultures. “When I am in Syosset, I’m around a certain group of kids for 10 months out of the year, but if I go five miles down the road I can meet a completely different group of people of different races, religions and socioeconomic standpoints, ” said Jake. “We have our political views and goals in life, and Freeport students have their views and goals. Both are valid, so why not take the opportunity to take advantage of how close

we are and break down any walls that may exist between the two schools.” “We are associating with students of other races and backgrounds with different opinions, all things that you sometimes are not exposed to because of the community you live in,” said Freeport junior Ismary Jiminez. “I have learned so much more about different people, and as a group, we get to break stereotypes. You start to see that we all are the same human race and we can all communicate with each other. It really helps us to bond. ” Steinberg said the students are driving the program and he hopes that the early exchanges give them direction in shaping Breaking Borders for next year.

Essayists Honored Two students from South Grove Elementary School in Syosset are being honored for their excellent writing skills and their knowledge of important figures in Black History. Fourth-grader Aayan Subzwari and fifth-grader Russell Erfan were both finalists and received honorable mention in the

Optimum Community Black History Month Essay Contest. The boys were among only five students from the Tri-state area to place in the elementary category of the contest. Students throughout the Tri-state area were invited to submit an essay of 500 words or less naming an African American

with whom they would choose to spend a day and explain why. Aayan wrote his essay about boxer/ activist Muhammad Ali while Russell wrote about author/surveyor/farmer Benjamin Banneker. Each received a certificate and an iPad mini from Optimum Community for their submissions.

Special Delivery By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Several weeks ago, shortly after the passing of my “Pal,” my Grandpa, we discovered what appeared to be a small bird’s nest nestled under the awning in the backyard. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin. No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs. Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return. Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, fleeing only briefly upon any human sightings.

Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds. This was due to the fact that my Grandpa, lovable as he was, did not care for the messy remnants of twigs and leaves that the birds tended to leave while in the “construction” stage of things. At the first sign of a nest-in-progress, out would come the broom, sweeping all of their hard work away in one fell swoop. But now, here they were – four, tiny, perfect Easter-looking eggs, ready to hatch at any moment with brand new life. We kept a watchful eye on them for weeks, until one day, out popped a baby, all pink and naked, flopped on the other three eggs, which were now

showing signs of beginning to crack as well. A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby. As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery. According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to fly off on their own. And such is the circle of life… How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

Commemoration Held Students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades had the opportunity to hear directly from a Holocaust survivor on Yom Hashoah. The experience was even more profound for the students as the survivor is the Grandmother of one of the fifth grade students. Sarah Schor spoke with the students at HANC Plainview in depth about her own experiences. Originally from Romania and imprisoned as a young girl, Ms. Schor mesmerized

the students with the recounting of her life. Ms. Schor, known as Safta (The Hebrew word for Grandmother), not only shared her story but also took questions from the eager students. She answered each with honesty and insight. The students each took in all they learned and felt from hearing the Holocaust survivor speak and wrote her letters about their experience listening to her story. One student

wrote, “Thank you so much for coming in and sharing your story. You have made me look at the story in a different way.” About HANC: HANC provides academic excellence for students from all Jewish backgrounds, from toddler through high school. HANC is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the New York Department of Education.

Bethpage High School is proud to announce its valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2016. Valedictorian Megan Hsun is an AP Scholar with Distinction and a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student. She is co-captain of the school’s cross-country team and a member of the track team, Mathletes, Kiwanis Key Club, National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. Megan plays the

piano, as well as the flute in her church’s youth orchestra. She volunteers at the New York Rescue Mission in New York City and in the lab at New York Presbyterian. She intends to major in a STEAMrelated field in the fall. Also a National Merit Commended Student and an AP Scholar with Distinction, salutatorian Joaane Kim intends to major in biology. She is co-captain of the school’s badminton and varsity

tennis teams, secretary of the Kiwanis Key Club, and a member of the school orchestra, Mathletes, National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. Joaane is an AllCounty musician who accompanies the school’s Vocal Versatility group. In her spare time, she tutors through the National Honor Society tutoring program.

TURQUOISE TAKEOVER - Long Island’s “Turquoise Takeover” campaign was recently held as part of the National Women’s Lung Health Week. Lung Cancer is the leading cancer killer of women in the United States. As part of Turqoise Takeover, members of the Town Board illuminated Town Hall with turquoise as a strong symbolic step towards uniting Americans to stand together with collective strength and determination in the fight against lung cancer and for lung health. Now in its ninth consecutive year, Supervisor John Venditto and the Town Board awarded Carol Meschkow with a proclamation designating the second full week in May as “Women’s Lung Health Week” in the Town of Oyster Bay.
