Staying Power I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these
obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

Syosset High School has been ranked No. 24 in New York State and No. 173 nationally in U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 rankings of the “Best High Schools in America.” Syosset also received a gold medal from the news organization for its attention to preparing students for college while making significant jumps in this year’s standings overall. U.S. News & World Report evaluated 28,496 schools to determine the top public high schools nationally. Factored in were overall student performance on staterequired tests, how effectively schools educated students who are disadvantaged and graduation rates. Schools were also evaluated on how well they prepared students for college based on participation in and performance on AP and IB exams. Syosset High School has an AP participation rate of 84 percent and received a college readiness index of 72.8 resulting in the gold medal distinction. The school also has a student proficiency rating of 99 percent in English and 94 percent in math with a 99 percent graduation rate. This year reflects a considerable climb for Syosset, overall, in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings, as the school advanced 81 positions in the national ranking and 15 on the state list. “On behalf of the Board of Education and the central administration team, I congratulate Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante, the school administration, faculty and support staff for their tireless efforts to deliver an exemplary educational experience,” said Syosset Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers. “They have created an environment where high challenge is enabled through high support across a wide breadth of program opportunities. The day-long event will feature approximately 600 competing athletes, supported by 300 coaches and hundreds of volunteers. Each of the athletes, facing intellectual or developmental disabilities, have undertaken months of training to participate in this Olympic style competition. The Special Olympics competition provides an opportunity to showcase the talents
and achievements of the participants, while also breaking down social barriers and stereotypes. “The Town of Oyster Bay has partnered with the Bethpage School District in making this important event a reality here in the Town of Oyster Bay,” Supervisor Saladino said. “It would be difficult to find a more inspirational and positive event to have the community rally behind.”

Food Bank Visit
Congressman Pete King visits Long Island Cares Food Bank at its corporate office in Hauppauge. Long Island Cares was founded by the late singersongwriter Harry Chapin in 1980. Its goals are to improve food security for families and inform the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. Among other things Long Island Cares distributes more than 8,000,000 pounds of food via more than 590 food
pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior nutrition sites and day care centers throughout Nassau and Suffolk. Long Island Cares also provides nutritional meals for many needy children in various after-school programs and works closely with veterans organizations to assist needy veterans, including delivering groceries to homebound, disabled veterans. Approximately 284,000 Long Island residents
receive emergency food from Long Island Cares each year. Rep. King has strongly supported these nutrition programs in Congress and recently voted to provide $883 million (an increase of $3 million over the previous year for programs supporting senior nutrition including Meals On Wheels. Congressman King noted that under the leadership of CEO Paule Pachter, Long Island Cares does an outstanding job and deserves our support.

Beach Stickers on Sale Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson reminds residents that the early sale of seasonal beach stickers begins on Saturday, May 13th. Beginning that day, Town residents may choose to get their beach stickers at certain locations ahead of time to avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends only.
“Many of us eagerly look forward to Memorial Day weekend for the first opportunity to enjoy a fun day at the beach,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “By purchasing a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, you can avoid hitting long lines at the start of the beach season and be able to spend more time in the sand.” The Councilwoman
noted that beach stickers will be on sale daily, beginning on May 13th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Please note that stickers are NOT available at Town Hall. In order to purchase a beach sticker, residents must bring their driver’s
license and vehicle registration and must be in the vehicle they will use to drive to the beach since stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only residents may purchase beach stickers for Town of Oyster Bay Beaches. Seasonal stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits. “Stickers are accepted at all Town of Oyster Bay

MEMORIAL SERVICE - Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino, along with Town Officials, recently attended the 2017 New York State Fraternal Order of Police Annual Memorial Service, which took place in Hicksville. This ceremony traditionally honors those who died in the Line of Duty and this year, it honored 80 Law Enforcement Officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the citizens of New York State. Supervisor Saladino was joined by Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto, Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. and Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker.
THE BATTLE AT BETHPAGE - Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino, Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto and Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. recently attended the Battle of Bethpage, a Collegiate Men’s Division I Lacrosse contest between the Duke University “Blue Devils” and the Boston University “Terriers held at Bethpage High School. Proceeds from the game support the Bethpage Educational Foundation, Inc., which provides meaningful assistance to the educational program in the Bethpage Schools. Among those also on hand were Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker and Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer.

Congratulations to Syosset High School senior Ben Rhee who is a member of the 53rd class of U.S. Presidential Scholars, which was recently announced by the U.S. Department of Education. Ben is one of just 161 high school seniors named a Presidential Scholar in 2017. The White House Committee for Presidential Scholars selects winners annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated
Ben is the Class of 2017 salutatorian, was a National Merit Finalist and a National AP Scholar of Distinction. He serves as editor-in-chief of the high school newspaper “The Pulse,” is senior class treasurer, vice president of Model Congress and is an award-winning violinist with the school’s chamber orchestra. This year he was also named a Regeneron prizewinning scholar for science. In addition to all of this, he finds time to volunteer at a local nursing facility and New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “I’d like to thank everyone who has helped and encouraged me to get where I am today,” said Ben.”This honor doesn’t just represent me, it represents the whole community of family, teachers, friends, and mentors who have always been there and made Syosset such a great place to remember.” Ben and the other recipients will be honored in Washington D.C. on June 18th. This fall he will attend Harvard where he will major in biosciences.

A Beautifying Tribute Students and staff at Baylis Elementary School took time to recognize Earth Day 2017 and pay tribute to a strong supporter of children in the community. The entire school assembled on the school lawn to sing about the Earth and dedicate a new tree in memory of the late Nassau County
Legislator Judy Jacobs. Sydney Geller, a student council officer at Baylis, is the granddaughter of Jacobs. She and her fellow student council leaders led the school in an original song titled “Many Helping Hands.” Baylis parent Ramona Machson wrote and composed the song, incorporating Earth Day-
related phrases provided by students from every grade level at Baylis into her lyrics. The Baylis Garden Club also accepted a generous donation of flowers from the Baylis PTA, which will be used to create a second butterfly garden at the school.
