Nassau County Bar Association attorneys and judges volunteer to serve as team attorney-advisors and trial judges to provide students with hands-on opportunities to further their understanding of the law, court procedures and the legal system while honing their speaking, listening, reading and reasoning skills. They advise and counsel student teams in trial techniques and court procedures as they prepare to prosecute, defend, and act as witnesses in a fictional case provided by the state bar. Each team has a turn at representing both the plaintiff and the defendant side of the criminal case on two consecutive weeks against different opponents and before different judges. Sunshine & Socializing By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day? Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know? Sure, summer isn’t even officially underway yet, but the signs are everywhere. Concert schedules are out, vacations are being planned, baseball is in full swing – before you know it, it will be time to break out the
BBQ and open the pool for the first summer soiree. School? Work? Eh, plenty of time for that in the winter. Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done. Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second. Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone. Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse
than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother. It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great. If not, at least you didn’t waste your time getting your hopes up, right? I think that will be my mantra for this summer. Nice and relaxing. No stress, no aggravation, just enjoyment. And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things. See ya on the sand!

For the first time, an allfemale team of students from Our Lady of Mercy High School in Syosset out-argued 46 other high schools in the county to win the Nassau County Championship in the 2013 New York State Mock Trial Tournament, announced Marilyn Genoa, co-chair of the Mock Trial Tournament, which is coordinated in the county each year by the Nassau County Bar Association. The team was led by Teacher Coaches Rosefina Cali Di Campo and Meredith Kurz. The Mock Trial Tournament is the largest competition in the state that pits high school students arguing a real case in a real courtroom of the Supreme Court in Mineola. Nassau boasts the largest single-county tournament in the state. This year, 121 attorneys and judges volunteered and more than

The Royal Canadian Air Force Supersonic F18 Demonstration Team will be making their second Bethpage Air Show appearance. Another first for this year’s anniversary show is the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach 10th Anniversary App, which will soon be available on iTunes. Available for Androids and iPhones, Bethpage Air show enthusiasts will get up-to-the-minute information on parking field availability, full access to listen to the show live with a WHLI announcer, listen to live aircraft-to-tower communications from Republic Airport, learn about all of the show’s performers, take, share and comment on photos with other users, easily find Jones Beach Boardwalk vendors and on-site attractions, and more. Also available for the time is the commemorative Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach 10th Anniversary DVD, which will be given away for free at Jones Beach toll booths to the first 1,000 cars to arrive to the air show on Saturday, and at the Bethpage Jones Beach Boardwalk tent on Saturday and Sunday. Then, for a minimum $10 donation, fans can receive a “Rebuilding Long Island Shore to Shore” t-shirt, with all proceeds benefitting United Way of Long Island’s partner program with Bethpage to support Long Island families affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Bethpage Air Show will be held Memorial Day weekend 2013 at Jones Beach State Park, Wantagh, NY, on Saturday, May 25th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 26th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Air Show is
free to the public, but the standard $10 vehicle use fee will be collected each day upon entry to the State Park. For 2013 NYS Empire Passport holders, there is no vehicle use fee charge. Event checkin begins at 9 a.m. and the walk kicks-off at 10 a.m. The Lymphomathon is a non-competitive 5K walk where survivors, families, friends, community members and corporate teams walk in honor and in memory of those whose lives have been touched by lymphoma. Funds raised by Lymphomathon participants support LRF’s vital mission of eradicating lymphoma and serving those touched by this disease. Since their inception, Lymphomathons have
raised more than $11 million for innovative lymphoma research. “With more than 5,300 people diagnosed with a type of lymphoma in New York last year alone, raising awareness and funds for lymphoma research is essential,” said Linda Vaughn, Lymphoma Research Foundation New York City Chapter President and follicular lymphoma survivor. “With both the New York and Long Island chapters working together, this year’s Greater New York Lymphomathon will make a meaningful difference.” Lymphoma is the most common blood cancer in adults and the third most common cancer overall in
children. According to the American Cancer Society, there are approximately 200 Americans diagnosed with lymphoma every day. That means every seven minutes someone is diagnosed with lymphoma and a cure can only be realized through advanced research. This summer, Long Island’s #1 arts school – Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) – invites students to learn from the masters. The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 next fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills in a variety of disciplines. Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto reminds residents that seasonal beach stickers may be purchased beginning on Saturday, May 11th, so that Town residents may get their beach stickers ahead of time and avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend, when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends. “So many residents enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay and eagerly look forward to the first opportunity to enjoy those beaches during the Memorial Day weekend,” Councilman Pinto said. “Town residents, who purchase a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, will avoid the possibility of waiting in line during opening
weekend.” The Councilman announced that beach stickers will be for sale daily, beginning on May 11th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. In order to purchase a beach sticker, residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration. In addition, residents must come in the vehicle they will be driving to the beaches as stickers are affixed to vehicles at the time of purchase. “Fun-filled days at Town of Oyster Bay beaches are not far off and the Town’s beach sticker is a great value,” added Councilman Pinto. “It may be used at
all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents will have an opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay throughout the summer.” Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening for weekends only on Saturday, May 25th. All Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open seven days a week beginning on Saturday, June 22nd. The beaches will remain open through Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that on Saturday, May 18th, at 11:30 a.m., the Town will conduct a ceremony to officially re-name its golf course in honor of Joseph Colby, a resident of Massapequa Park who served as the Town of Oyster Bay’s 56th Supervisor. The Honorable Joseph Colby was appointed Supervisor in 1977 and was elected to that office five times in the following ten years. He was then elected as a New York State Supreme Court Justice in 1988, a post he held through his retirement from public service in 1992. The unveiling will take place at the main entrance of the course off South Woods Road in Woodbury. “When the sign for Honorable Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course is unveiled, it will celebrate an outstanding career in public service,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Joseph Colby has always had the needs of the public as his top priority and has been widely respected for his innovation and responsiveness. This golf course will now forever bear his name as a tribute to his outstanding legacy.”
The Town’s Par-70 championship golf course opened to great acclaim in 1989 and is widely considered to be among the finest courses in the country. The site has a distinctively attractive topography and landscape. Once an expansive gold coast estate, the course was designed around the natural contours of the land, including open meadows, dense forested areas and natural water bodies. “While Supervisor, Joseph Colby’s vision was to protect and preserve this impressive expanse of beautiful property,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Just as Colby envisioned, this golf course was a perfect example of both aesthetics and function.” Formerly known as the Bruce Estate, the 120 acre parcel of pristine land, now serving as the Town’s golf course, was acquired by the Town in the 1970’s. Although there were many proposed uses for the property, it was Supervisor Colby who thought that a golf course may best showcase and preserve the land. Now, thanks to his vision, the golf course bearing his name truly stands as one of the Town’s crown jewels.” Supervisor Venditto said that Joseph Colby, now retired with his wife Adelle and living in Florida, has proudly dedicated his life to public service. “His collective efforts have made a positive difference in the Town that is still evident today,” Supervisor Venditto said. “He always cared about the Town and its residents and this renaming ceremony, at the golf course recognizing the Honorable Joseph Colby, is the Town’s way of showing how much we care about him.”
