he Music Association of Plainview-Old Bethpage School District recently hosted its annual Musical Instrument “Petting Zoo” at the POB Middle School for elementary students from Stratford Road Elementary, Pasadena Elementary, Parkway Elementary and Old Bethpage Elementary Schools. Student members of John F. Kennedy High School’s Tri-M Music Honor Society taught the younger students about instruments they can play.

Of Memories Made & Yet To Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors
Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks... Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of
Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

ENCHANTED DAISIES - Syosset Daisy Troop 3450 recently expanded its cultural horizons by attending a performance of Cinderella at the John W. Engemann Theater in Northport. In recognition of April as Autism Awareness Month, students and staff at Syosset High School decorated the hallways with blue balloons, posters, streamers and puzzle pieces, the symbol for autism awareness. Staff donned blue Autism Awareness t-shirts, while
students dressed in blue shirts, jeans and sweaters. Every morning during the month of April students made announcements sharing a statistic or fact about autism. During the campaign, students also handed out lollipops shaped in a puzzle piece, which is a national symbol
that reflects the mystery and complexity of autism spectrum disorder. Blue has become the signature color for autism awareness initiatives, including World Autism Awareness Day held every year in April.

Fifth-grade students at Burns Avenue Elementary School received a special visit from their counterparts at Hicksville High School to discuss the book “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio. In small groups, the
Burns students presented their book reports to the elder students, all of whom were selected based on their standing in the English Honor Society. Together, the students discussed the plot, characters and overall theme of the book.
The discussion served as an interactive way for students to hone their literary analysis skills.

College Decisions Senior students at Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High School announced their final college decisions May 1st, 2015 in honor of National College Decision Day. Students wore apparel
from their future college or university to symbolize the final step of their college commitment process. A “College Decision Tree” has been on display in the school lobby, where students have posted “leaves” notating the

Scherer “I Did the Grid” 4 Mile Competitive Run, 1 Mile Fun Run, and 4 Mile Recreational Run / Walk will be taking place on the streets of East Northport. On July 21st, 2007, Christopher Schererm who was a Corporal in the Marine Corpsm lost his life while serving our Country in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. Top Honors
The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is proud to announce Tyler Fenton and Evan Rinder as the Class of 2015 Valedictorian and Salutatorian respectively at John F. Kennedy High School. “Throughout the past four years, both Tyler and Evan have achieved immense success inside and outside the classroom and have served as excellent role models for their peers,” said Dr. Lorna Lewis, Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District Superintendent of Schools. “I know the opportunities they experienced while at school have done more than prepare them for college and we are excited to see all Tyler and Evan will accomplish in the years to come.” Fenton was named a National Merit Finalist and excelled in ten AP classes, in addition to a variety of college-level courses. Fenton also conducted research at the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine, where he examined if blueberries could have a positive outcome when treating breast cancer. Rinder was also recently named a National Merit Scholarship finalist, and received school, state and national honors in math, social studies, science, English, world languages and music. He took 10 AP courses and received the AP scholar award in recognition of exemplary performance on AP exams. Outside the classroom, Fenton and Rinder participated in a number of activities and took on multiple leadership roles. Fenton is the founder of the Ride 4 the Ribbon fundraiser. He created, organized, coordinated and hosted this annual event, which donates all proceeds to the Conquer Cancer Foundation. He has helped raise over $18,000 to date. In addition, Fenton is the treasurer of the DECA club, a business competition team, where he has placed in multiple

Model UN Conference
Under the guidance of their mentor, enrichment specialist Gregory Ryan, 22 members of South Woods Middle School’s Model UN Club – 12 seventh-graders and 10 sixth-graders – recently participated in the world’s largest middle school Model UN conference, held in Midtown Manhattan. South Woods delegates represented Guatemala and Lithuania on 12 committees. Each committee addressed a potential resolution for
issues that their real-life counterparts in the U.N. are currently addressing. Delegates representing Lithuania on the Security Council played a major role in resolving the issue of ISIS in Syria. Delegates on the UN Women committee worked on a resolution to protect young girls from attack on their way to school. The World Health Organization addressed the problem of the spread of infectious diseases. South Woods delegates to the UN Environmental
Program contributed many ideas and were sponsors to the committee resolution on the issue of chemical waste disposal. Delegates to the UN Development Program were contributing sponsors to the committee resolution on sustainable energy for all. The Model UN Club plans to attend next year’s conference as well. Royal Treatment The Hicksville Public School District honored the community’s senior citizens with an afternoon of food and entertainment during its 23rd Annual Spring Luncheon for Senior Citizens. The special guests were treated to performances by the Hicksville High School’s jazz ensemble, woodwind chamber ensemble, theatre department and select vocalists who performed duets. The school’s small gymnasium, which was set
up to resemble a ballroom, also featured the drawings, paintings and photos of its art students. The longstanding tradition served as a way for the district to celebrate the community’s senior citizens, as well as showcase students’ prowess in music and the arts.
