With the development of more than 30 instructional modules and a one-of-its-kind textbook – Cause Selling: The Sanford Way – the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at National University meets the standards of excellence as outlined by Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) International and has been approved by the nonprofit certification organization as a Continuing Education Provider. “We are very pleased to celebrate the launch of the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at Long Island University, which will strengthen the philanthropic culture in the region they serve and build the capacity of nonprofit leaders,” said Dr. Lena Rodriguez, Endowed Director of the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at National University. “The vision of Mr. Sanford is to make the world a better place, and through the Institutes’ work we create stronger communities through more sustainable and impactful nonprofits.” To date, more than 12,000 nonprofit leaders have benefitted from the founding Institute’s programs at National University. On Tuesday, June 13th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 29th annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho and the Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley. Event Chair, Steven Yanofsky, Parts Authority, Inc., LLC along with the corporate and community leadership of Long Island will be participating to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. This event provides an excellent networking opportunity while promoting exercise and physical activity. This year’s event will honor Mark S. Davis Managing Partner, Deloitte. The American Heart Association is excited to announce that the Tennis Classic will once again be a part of the day’s events. The Tennis Classic will take place at Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley with the cocktail reception taking place that evening at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. Jill Byrne and Yvonne Evelyn will Co-Chair the Tennis event. Paul Woodstock, Executive Vice President, U.S. Sales & Marketing, Biotronik Corp. will be the tennis honoree. Much progress has been made in the fight against heart disease and stroke. However, many Americans are still not getting the proper amount of exercise that will effectively combat risk factors for serious health issues. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult (and childhood) obesity/ overweight level

Brisk walking around the golf course and playing tennis has many proven health benefits. Adults may gain as much as two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular, vigorous exercise–like very brisk walking–even if they don’t begin exercising until middle age. cancer diagnosis at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC). These staff members provide on-going support and follow patients through diagnosis and treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and reconstruction. The program at NUMC addresses disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients with breast cancer. The funds received from KROH have enabled the breast cancer program to hire a second parttime bilingual social worker/patient navigator. Additionally, in June, the program will begin Spanish

language support groups at community centers for patients and their families. “Kat’s Ribbon of Hope is very proud to continue our collaboration with the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program by funding an additional patient navigator to help serve the many women and men in the community facing breast cancer,” says Despina Yarian, cofounder and chair of KROH. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support and information to people coping with cancer. Imbroto and Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. congratulated two Town of Oyster Bay Constables Rob Walles and Jim Altadonna III, and local Clammer Jeffrey Muglia of Amity Harbor at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa for their recent heroic efforts in rescuing two kayakers who capsized and fell into frigid waters off the Great South Bay. After their rescue, both individuals were brought to dry land, where they were taken to the hospital by a waiting ambulance.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from Kat’s Ribbon of Hope (KROH) that will allow the program to expand its services for bilingual social work/ patient navigation at local hospitals. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

The National Association of Music Merchants and the University of Kansas have named the Hicksville Public School District a 2017 Best Community for Music Education. This prestigious distinction is earned by school districts that exhibit outstanding efforts and commitment toward maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum, and excel in their instruction of music and extensive array of programs. “To be recognized once again with this honor truly is a testament to the dedication of our music students and their teachers,” said Chad Wyman, Hicksville High School coordinator of music and drama, and band director. “This is a community-based distinction, awarded to districts with music programs that mirror the support our outstanding students receive at home. We cannot give enough thanks for the hours, and in many cases the years, of efforts that their parents put in to allow their children to work toward performing at the highest level.” This year, 77 Hicksville music students were selected to participate in the Nassau Music Educators Association’s All-County Music ensembles, and an additional 10 students were selected to participate in the Long Island String Music Festival select ensembles and concerts. The district’s music curriculum emphasizes

the development of aesthetic sensitivity, selfexpression, teamwork and creativity through the examination and experience of this performing art. Listening skills, instrumental instruction, choral singing and performance are all part of a rich and varied music program. General music instruction begins in kindergarten. In third grade, students have the opportunity to begin studying a string instrument and participating in chorus. Starting in fourth grade, students may study a band instrument. A wide range of courses in music is available to secondary school students, including band, orchestra, chorus, piano, music theory and survey of fine arts. E x t e n s i v e extracurricular activities at the secondary level support the music program, including string ensemble, jazz ensemble, marching band as well as the annual Broadway Musical play. One unit of study in the arts is required in order to earn a high school Regents Diploma; however, many district students go well beyond and participate in music ensembles and classes throughout their four years in high school. Through the district’s Arts in Education program, professional artists in the fields of art, music, drama and dance visit the schools throughout the district to work with students and help them to understand the nature of their art form. Registration Underway Join the ACLD Foundation and help support the 3,000 people Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), headquartered in Bethpage, serves each year by taking part in the second annual Journey to an Enviable Life 5K Walk/ Run on Saturday, May 20th at Heckscher State Park in

East Islip. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. Registration is now underway and will continue through day of the event. In addition to the 5K Walk/Run, there will also be a 1K Fun Run. Timeless I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to share their favorite photos as they ‘Play in Oyster Bay’ this spring and summer. “Our beautiful Town has so many photo opportunities, and I am asking our residents to submit their favorite shots to be featured on the Town’s Facebook pages, as well as in Town publications and facilities,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We open this opportunity to all Town residents, designed to capture recreation and leisure at the Town’s many parks and recreational facilities, or scenic beauty

anywhere in the Town of Oyster Bay.” Supervisor Saladino noted that Town residents have a multitude of recreational facilities at their disposal, including the best parks, world class beaches, a championship golf course, a state-ofthe-art ice skating center, pools, marinas and community centers. “There are so many wonderful photo opportunities,” he said. “Fishing, boating, swimming, baseball, skating, picnics, tennis, walking, biking and jogging are just some of the activities that provide great photo subject matter.”

Bethpage Vanguard Bethpage UFSD student Megan V. Phillips was honored recently for breaking new ground in career and technical education (CTE). Megan, who is a police science and criminal justice student at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, earned the 2017 Vanguard Award for seeking academic and career paths that defy

conventional gender roles. The award recognizes exceptional students enrolled in CTE programs that prepare them for nontraditional careers. The Vanguard Award was created by the Nontraditional Employment and Training (NET) Project, which provides statewide

The Bethpage School District announced that Shanaz Deen and Anthony Hernandez are Bethpage High School Class of 2017’s valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Both students have excelled in all aspects of their education and have earned this prestigious designation. Some of Shanaz’s highlights include being named an AP Scholar with Distinction and placing fourth in the nation at the national championships in Marine Fitness. Shanaz is captain of the Marine Fitness team,

vice president of tutoring for the National Honor Society, and a member of the Student Civic Club, Spanish Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society. She has taken a total of 12 Advanced Placement classes at BHS and was part of the school’s gymnastics team. Shanaz will attend Princeton University to study molecular biology in the fall. Anthony has also been named an AP Scholar with Distinction, and has been honored by the National Hispanic Scholar Award Recognition Program. He was named Class Senator

Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to skate alongside autistic coworkers from Joe’s job at Spectrum Designs. Jaclyn organized T-shirts produced by Spectrum Designs reading the slogan “Skate for Autism” to be randomly thrown out to the skaters to help promote autism awareness. Sweet Treats of Oceanside, provided countless custom-made as well as traditional sweet treats for all who attended the event. “We are very pleased to contribute such a wonderful cause,” said Sweet Treats owner and cosponsor Melanie Ciccone. The founders and

employees of Spectrum Designs together with families of the autism community are deeply appreciative of Jaclyn’s enormous efforts in singlehandedly organizing this event. Together with Joe’s help, the generosity of Nassau County and Sweet Treats, she raised almost $11,000. She embarked on a journey, using her talent, to make others aware that over the next decade, over 500,000 individuals with autism will be old enough to enter the workforce, therefore job opportunities, like those provided by Spectrum Designs, are much needed.
