We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer. Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.
Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on
writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Pasadena ended 2018 with their 18th Annual All Star Volleyball Game. This school-wide event brought the Pasadena community together to cheer on the fourth grade All Star Volleyball team as they competed against the teachers. The process started early in the fall when the fourth graders were taught how to play volleyball, how to
keep score and practice good sportsmanship. The students then spent the next few weeks playing volleyball and evaluating their performance with a rubric. Tensions ran high as the two versatile and prepared teams played at their best. This year the teachers claimed victory, but the students had the most fun seeing their teachers dive after the balls. The Pasadena Pep Band students, led by Glenn Chiarello and with help from the JFKHS Pep Band Director Brian Carter, played to excite the teams and spectators. Pasadena was also visited by the JFKHS Carolers, led by Adam Paltrowitz, to entertain the students between matches. Some

Antibiotics Aren’t Always The Answer CDC Urges Public To Be Antibiotics Aware (NAPSI)—The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages patients and families to Be Antibiotics Aware by learning about safe antibiotic use. Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people get infected with antibioticresistant bacteria. At least 23,000 die as a result. Antibiotic resistance, one of the most urgent threats to the public’s health, occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them. What Do Antibiotics Treat? Antibiotics are critical tools for treating a number of common infections, such as pneumonia, and for life-threatening conditions including sepsis. Antibiotics are only needed for treating certain infections caused by bacteria. What Don’t Antibiotics Treat? Antibiotics do not work on viruses, such as colds and flu, or runny noses, even if the mucus is thick, yellow or green.
Antibiotics also won’t help some common bacterial infections including most cases of bronchitis, many sinus infections, and some ear infections. What Are The Side Effects of Antibiotics? ny time antibiotics are used, they can cause side effects and lead to antibiotic resistance. When antibiotics aren’t needed, they won’t help you, and the side effects could still hurt you. Common side effects range from things like rashes and yeast infections to severe health problems. Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Four students from the Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD, all of whom are attending Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), were inducted recently into two prestigious national honor societies. All of these students were recognized not only for their extraordinary talent, but also for their academic achievements and leadership. Sierra Miles, Julia Sprung and Ryan Young were inducted into the National Art Honor Society (NAHS). Tri-M officers and members must maintain a grade point average of 85 or higher, dedicate time to school and community service, and demonstrate exemplary character traits, such as respect, responsibility, dependability, fairness, caring and citizenship. The “Thoughtful Thursday” monthly series at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Central Boulevard Elementary School continues, and a special activity was held on April 11 with the intention of helping others. Exactly one month shy of the Long Island Special Olympics, students created artwork for the local event.
Grade levels were tasked with different activities that led to a collaborative compilation of decorations to support the Special Olympics participants. Kindergarten and first grade classes colored and cut out inspirational ribbons, while second graders prepared rainbows displaying special messages. Third and fourth
grade classes wrote thankyou notes for volunteers and the fifth graders illustrated posters for athlete encouragement. The district will host more than 500 athletes for the Long Island Special Olympics, which will take place at the high school’s athletic fields on May 11.
Making a Water Difference Art classes at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Kramer Lane and Charles Campagne elementary schools recently participated in the Bethpage Water District’s water conservation poster contest. Posters were created by students to address the question of “how can I make a difference by conserving water?” The program offers an opportunity to focus
student and community attention on the multiple, vital benefits that come from simply cutting back water usage. The contest aims to encourage students to learn more about how they can make a positive impact in the neighborhood. The students’ projects creatively promoted the conservation of water. Through images and text, they stressed the importance of not leaving

water running, turning off appliances and taking steps to save water. The relaunch of the contest is part of the water district’s celebration of Earth Day on April 22. Prizes will be awarded in June for each participating grade level as well as a special recognition from the Board of Commissioners for the best message.

A Standard and Example Set prepare for college and beyond. Blake has enrolled at Northeastern University for the fall with plans on majoring in mechanical engineering. Morgan will major in business management at nearby SUNY Farmingdale. While the team built the robot during a sixweek window in January and February, members meet year-round to discuss methods and strategies. The intense six-weekslong preparation period involved after-school work, sometimes until almost 9 p.m., and students also dedicated the majority of their Saturdays. The work ethic and dedication demonstrated are just two of the values learned by students and alumni of Regal Eagles. “It is such a unique experience being part of FIRST Robotics that you will never experience anywhere else,” said Blake.
“The program is expanding massively.” The goals of the team at the championships are to continue to fix the flaws of their robot, reach the Einstein level once again and improve upon their success and results from last year. However, no matter the outcome, Blake, Morgan and the entire team have set a standard of excellence for future robotic teams and students in the district. “Blake and Morgan’s contributions have been more than just the development of the robot,” said Director of Technology Andrew Choi. “This team has pushed through adversity and put together a body of work this year to earn a place in Detroit.” The district wishes the Regal Eagles the best of luck during the FIRST World Championships.

Bethpage High School’s Regal Eagles robotics team is set for a challenge at the For Inspiration Recognition of Science and Technology Robotics Competition World Championship, to be held in Detroit, Michigan, from April 24-26. This marks the third straight year that the Regal Eagles are contenders in this event. Seniors Blake von der Esch and Morgan Heller have been part of all three previous trips to the FIRST World Championships as four-year members of Team #2869. Both students have witnessed the growth of robotics and science at school and in regional events. There were 54 participating teams at the New York City Regional on April 6 and 7, including groups from China, Turkey and the United Kingdom. The Regal Eagles experience has helped each student individually

With the end of the school year nearing, Bethpage High School recently announced seniors Stacy Kappel and Soham Maiti as the Class of 2019 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. A pair of students who have been recognized for academic achievements throughout the school year, Stacy and Soham were both identified among the 15,000 finalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program in
March after being named semifinalists in September. Stacy is a member of the National Honor Society and Italian Honor Society at the high school. She plans to major in engineering when she begins college in the fall. Soham intends on majoring in economics when he begins his collegiate studies. At Bethpage, he is the president of the Philosophy Club, team captain of the Ethics Club, an All-State
musician, a founding member of the Chamber Orchestra, a Mathlete and a member of the National and Spanish honor societies. “Stacy and Soham are great examples and role models for future graduates to look up to,” said Principal Nicholas Jantz. “Congratulations to them on being named the valedictorian and salutatorian of this year’s graduating class.”

There are many resources for people who feel wrung out ringing in the New Year. For example, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) can help. MFTs are licensed mental health professionals who work with individuals, couples (married or not), families of all types, and groups to cure or relieve mental, emotional and relational
concerns of all kinds. How To Recognize Depression To help you tell if you or someone you care about is suffering from depression, the experts at the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) offer these warning signs: • Feeling sad and/or irritable • Changes in weight or appetite • Difficulty sleeping • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness • Inability to
concentrate, remember things or make decisions • Thoughts of death or suicide. How To Handle Depression If these symptoms look familiar, here are some things to do right now: • Recognize depression early. Depression can happen to anyone. It’s not a character defect, a weakness or a shameful condition. It’s a serious disorder that no one is immune to. • Engage in your life. If you are depressed, you may feel like you don’t
have an ounce of energy or motivation to tackle depression. Recovery, however, requires your active participation. Be willing to take the first step, even though it’s not easy. • Build your skills. Learn why you’re vulnerable to depression and specific ways to become more resilient by breaking unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior. Developing good coping and relationship skills can reduce both the frequency and severity of
depression episodes. • Find the right therapist. Talking through one’s stressors and understanding the underlying causes is a proven way to effectively treat depression. Look for therapists with training and experience in treating depression, as well as someone who is warm, supportive and goal oriented. Use short telephone interviews to find a good fit with potential therapists. Ask about how they approach problems like yours.
• Be optimistic. You have every reason to believe you can get better with effective treatment. While anti-depressants are not a cure, they can be very helpful to some people in managing depression. Whether or not you choose to use medicine to manage your symptoms, therapy can give you the long-term skills you need to live a productive, fulfilling life.
