Vogt Field at Bethpage High School hosted the 4th Annual Battle At Bethpage, featuring the Men’s Lacrosse game for Princeton vs. Cornell. The event, which is held in conjunction with the Town of Oyster Bay, raises money for the Bethpage Educational Foundation. Approximately 4,000 visitors attended, which also featured a Women’s Lacrosse game.

Written In The Stars I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted

nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”

It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

Each year, Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), Long Island’s leading non-profit dedicated to the prevention of bullying, child abuse and neglect among schoolage children, recognizes a local individual who has demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of children. This year, the CAPS John Davis Memorial Award will be given to Nancy Greulich

(Plainview) and Susan Silverman (Manhasset Hills), both long-time CAPS supporters, volunteers and past presidents of the CAPS Board of Directors. Town Supervisor John Venditto recently announced the release of a newly updated and redesigned version of the Town of Oyster Bay website. The new site, www.oysterbaytown.com, is interactive and easily accessible, and contains all information regarding Town news, meetings, activities, programs and upcoming events that residents could be searching for. “Our goal in this upgrade to the Town website is to provide an improved source of information

as the influx of visitors exponentially bolsters Fire Island’s economy. As I enjoyed my first few moments back on Fire Island, I noticed one characteristic that I had longed for the most. The geniality of the people who call this island home is a trait that I have never experienced elsewhere. Living as an “islander” grants you access into an exclusive club reserved only for those who treasure the island the most. Like myself, those same islanders have built the barrier beach up even after devastation. Following Hurricane Sandy, Fire Island was in pretty

bad shape. Thankfully, essentially all facets of the infrastructure have been repaired, and the island is better than ever. As one walks down the beach, “TrapBags” can be seen. Filled with sand, these large canvas sacks were purchased in order to create a dune. It seems as though this plan is thoroughly succeeding, possibly saving countless homes previously marked for demolition, like my own. After months of rebuilding, Fire Island is back in fighting shape. It seems as though this little slice of heaven is ready to welcome the masses as we quickly slide into summer.

The project began with the Life Skills students making more than 300 colored loom bracelets that represented different charities and sports teams to sell for charity. The goal was to provide the Life Skills students with practical experiences using cash register skills and communication strategies

to successfully interact with customers. Leftover bracelets were given to student council members at Charles Campagne, who continued the fundraising efforts. The school raised $804 for the cause. Thank you to everyone who supported this successful fundraiser.

I took a trip to Fire Island this past weekend. For the first time since last summer, I was back home. When I hopped on the ferry, I did not even think about the changes that may have influenced my little island. Upon arrival, it became clear that the summer rush had not yet spoiled the little barrier beach which, for me, symbolizes paradise. Kids Of Distinction Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, in collaboration with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. Co-Founders Robert A J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, would like to remind residents that the deadline for registration to their upcoming cosponsored “Kids of Distinction” scholarship program is May 16th. “The ‘Kids of Distinction’ Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors within their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Ten outstanding Town of Oyster Bay youngsters will be honored for their commitment to their communities.”

“The objective of the program is to recognize kids who acted on their own initiative to take part in beneficial activities for their neighbors or community,” Philip said. “Past winners have certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.” The Kids of Distinction program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. A student who goes the extra mile in their endeavors outside of the classroom deserves recognition so that it may inspire other youngsters to emulate this behavior. “Each year, we recognize a diverse group of students who really demonstrate caring and compassion to those around them,”

Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s group of winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor and we know these academic scholarships will help these students fund their college education. In these tough economic times every dollar helps.” This year the number of honorees has been increased to ten students in honor of the program’s 10th anniversary. Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grades and those in grades nine through 12. Five winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many

wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We feel it is important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.” Anyone who wishes to nominate a student, or should a student want to self-nominate they should fill out a nomination form and submit it to Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc., prior to the May 16th, 2014 deadline. Nominating forms can be obtained at Town Halls North

(Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), as well as at local libraries. Nominating forms can also be found on the Town’s Web site, www.oysterbaytown.com.
