Hicksville School District Named Best Community For Music For Fifth Consecutive Year

The NAMM Foundation has once again recognized the Hicksville School District community for its commitment to music education with its 2020 Best Communities for Music Education award! Hicksville is one of 754 school districts in the country named Best Communities for music education for 2020. The designation is awarded to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education, recognizing teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who strive to make music part of a wellrounded education. “We are incredibly proud to have received this recognition for the fifth year in a row,” said

Hicksville School District’s Supervisor of Fine Arts Chad Wyman. “Our students and teachers work so hard each and every day, and I know this means a great deal to them. What’s even better is the fact that this is a community honor, which could not be achieved without the support of our Board of Education, parents and Hicksville families alike!” To qualify for the Best Communities for Music Education award, school districts must answer detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities and support for music programs. “This award celebrates districts and schools that are working hard to assure that music education is part of a well-rounded

education available to all students,” said NAMM Foundation Executive Director Mary Luehrsen in a video message sent to the recipients. “We hope this news also lifts teachers, parents, school administrators, community leaders and most of all, students, and supports the commitment we all share to advance music education to all students, everywhere.” The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its approximately 10,400 members around the world. The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed

and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. â€œWe have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,â€? explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. â€œWe are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.â€? â€œThe pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,â€? says Misseri. â€œI hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.â€? Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Josephâ€™s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon.
