New Start Time For Air Show For the first time, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of New York State’s largest public events, will take place starting at 12 noon and run until 5 p.m. – a new time for the show, which traditionally ran from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the best parking opportunities. The Bethpage Air show at Jones Beach takes place on Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, which will be headlining this year’s show, will be the final act and make their appearance in the sky above Jones Beach at approximately 4:00 p.m. This will be the legendary demonstration squadron’s fourth appearance at the show, having last headlined the show in

2009. Their performance will include approximately 40 maneuvers, featuring formation flying and solo routines. The show will also feature veteran Bethpage Air Show performers including the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, , Sean D. Tucker – Team Oracle, Lt. Col. John Klatt – Air National Guard, the John Klatt Airshows – Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco Aerobatic Team, GEICO Skytypers, Miss GEICO Speedboat, American Airpower Warbirds, and David Windmiller. New to the show this year is the Breitling Jet Team, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team performing on jets. With its fast and powerful aircraft piloted by “flying aces,” this unique aerobatics team performs a meticulously coordinated

ballet, sometimes flying within 3 meters of each other at speeds of over 435 miles per hour. The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach is free of charge, but a standard $10 vehicle use fee will be collected. Bethpage Air Show announcers and Air Boss Wayne Boggs will lead air show activities from the Jones Beach State Park Central Mall Boardwalk area where food, beverages and ground activities will be available for fans. The Long Island Water Conference (LIWC) and Girls Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) reintroduced the “Every Drop Counts Patch” to teach Scouts the importance of their water supply. The patch can be earned by all levels of Girl Scouts and was sponsored by the LIWC to promote knowledge of the water industry and instill important messages

of water conservation. “‘The Every Drop Counts’ program is an exciting opportunity to give Girl Scouts an introduction to the water industry and gain more knowledge regarding their own water supply,” said Chairman of the Long Island Water Conference Board Michael O’Connell. “It is up to them to discover ways to preserve and improve upon our system to

ensure the people of Long Island continue to receive the highest quality of water possible. The golden sun shining on my face, the breeze gently blowing across my face like a tornado. I take a sip of sweet ice tea. Dogs barking, birds chirping all day. Children running faster than cheetahs. Bikes on roads, children playing basketball on the street. Kid yelling, “Whoooooh, no more cold!” No more jackets, no more boots, now it’s time for shorts. Children screaming their heads off like mad men enjoying… a sunny spring day.

Over the course of the 22-year history, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food.

The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.

The Space Between By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m sorry, this seat is taken. We’ve all done it. In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to

see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of

me, I might add. I glanced at my jacket and pocketbook, briefly considered moving it aside, then decided against it. “No, sorry, someone is coming,” I replied blandly. Even later than you, if that’s possible, I mentally added. He looked at me doubtfully, then did an about face and headed back to another seat further down the aisle. I glanced at my cousin and whispered, “So much for that theory – now he’s going to see no one’s coming. Whoops. Perhaps if he didn’t arrive after the opening credits…” And with that, I settled back into my seat with my popcorn, my personal space preserved. Obnoxious? Sure. Worth it? You bet.

In addition, Nadroo earned the U.S. Metric Association Award, Robbins won the American Psychological Association Award and Datt took home the Surgeon General’s Science Award. Three other Syosset High School students placed in their respective categories. Earlier last month, Senzer qualified for ISEF during the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF) for placing first with his project, titled “Using Geochemical Mapping of Marsh Foraminifera to Analyze Cytoplasmic Deposition of Trace Elements.”

All told, 11 out of the 13 Syosset High School projects submitted at LISEF earned a spot in the second round of the competition. Additionally, four Syosset students placed in the JV class at LISEF. The Pittsburg competition takes place May 10th-15th at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, with over 1,700 high school students from over 70 countries showcasing their research and competing for more than $5 million in prizes.

Kickline Performs

Students at Syosset High School recently held its annual multicultural fair, with a virtual world tour presented at various stations designed and operated by students. From Roman costumes, to Scottish bagpipers, the multicultural fair was filled

with the sights, sounds and smells of regions both remote and familiar. The fair has been an annual tradition at the school for more than 15 years and is facilitated by the world language department. The world language department offers courses

The qualification caps off a successful run of Syosset students placing in local and state fairs over the past several weeks. Benjamin Senzer, Abrar Nadroo, Ishan Datt and Jack Robbins will represent Syosset at the international competition for their research in a variety of categories. At the New York State Science and Engineering Fair (NYSSEF), Nadroo and Robbins took first place for their work in biochemistry

Library Love As part of its celebration of National Library Week, the Dutch Lane Elementary School community participated in several reading-related activities. Throughout the week, special guests, including Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso and members of the Board

of Education, visited the school to read to groups of students in the library. Staff and parents also presented Books Alive, a medley of theatrical performances based on popular children’s literature, to students. National Library Week culminated with the school’s first annual

Poem In Your Pocket day, during which students and staff carried poems in their pockets and shared them with each other throughout the day. The week’s events were designed to promote the importance of utilizing the library’s services and reading regularly.

Museum Ceremony On Saturday, April 25th, Deer Park High School Student William Bozzello, along with his Grandfather William Walden (Hicksville VFW Commander) attended the Museum of American Armor’s ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the historic linkup of Soviet and American forces along the river Elbe inside

Germany at the end of WWII. The keynote speaker was Colonel Maxim V. Bykov, the Russian Federation’s military attache to the United States. The ceremony was held with the intent of reminding everyone that there was a moment in history when the Americans and the Soviets stood as one against

a foe of unimaginable evil. The reenactment of the meeting, utilizing armored vehicles from both countries, was both unique and moving for all in attendance. The American Armor Museum is located in Old Bethpage at 1303 Round Swamp Road.

Students in the Robbins Lane Elementary and Village Elementary schools, in the Syosset School District, got a warm visit from Roger Tilles, who was recently reelected to another term on the New York State Board of Regents. Regent Tilles, a wellknown arts philanthropist, enjoyed a musical welcome at Robbins Lane from the school’s jazz band, and was delighted to learn that many of them had already played on the

stage of the Tilles Center as members of All-County ensembles. After brief tours of each building with Superintendent Dr. Thomas Rogers, Regent Tilles focused on the main purpose of his visit – reading to students from some of his favorite children’s poems. In both schools, Regent Tilles recited poems from Shel Silverstein, Robert Frost and others to groups of fourth-grade students. Afterward, he spoke to board members, teachers

Kiara Powell came to Holy Trinity from Hicksville Middle School. During her years at Holy Trinity she has been very involved in different aspects of student life. Shining Bright Hicksville High School sophomore Rhea Manjrekar, who has complemented her academic success with outstanding community service, has been recognized as a Leader of Tomorrow by the South Asian Political Action Committee (SAPAC). SAPAC honored young South Asian residents of Long Island for their remarkable community service, and recognized Manjrekar for her work with the Children’s

Hope India 3 charity. As part of her community contribution last year, Manjrekar spearheaded a fundraiser in Hicksville to help underprivileged children attend summer camp. The total amount of funds raised was $12,000, surpassing the goal of $3,000. “It feels so amazing to be able to help out,” Manjrekar said. “I really just wanted to give back to the community, and it’s so gratifying to be able to send children to camp who

may not have been able to otherwise.” In addition to her community service, Manjrekar is enrolled in all Honors classes, plays on several athletic teams, practices the viola, takes dance classes and participates in beauty pageants. She is the Miss Teen India New York runner-up and the Miss New York Statewide Junior Teen. Her principal, Raymond Williams, who was in attendance for Manjrekar’s

(NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your

security patch and antivirus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your

car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it. Summer Scholarship Program This summer, high school and college students can win a scholarship by hosting an American Red Cross blood drive through the Leaders Save Lives program. Registration is now open to host a participating blood drive between June 1st and August 31st, 2015. The Leaders Save Lives program encourages community-minded 16- to 24 year-olds to host blood drives to help maintain the blood supply over the summer months. Students who participate as a

blood drive coordinator are eligible to win a scholarship up to $2,500 for higher education and to earn a gift card. “The Leaders Save Lives program is a great way for students to learn valuable leadership skills while helping hospital patients in need of lifesaving blood transfusions,” said Red Cross spokesperson, Stefanie Arcangelo. “Summer can be a challenging time to maintain a sufficient blood supply.
