To help hospitals meet the ongoing need for blood, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Tom Hand and PlainviewOld Bethpage JFK students Ojas Chaudhary and Tyler Leest partnered to host a Blood Collection Drive on

Saturday, April 24th at the Hicksville Athletic Center. The donation drive was held in conjunction with the NY Blood Center, and numerous pints of blood were collected at this Collection Drive. A single pint of blood can save up to three lives.

this specific multi-milliondollar investment without impacting rates by using reserve accounts as well as receiving a $2.1 million grant the District was awarded from the state. “We are proud to be one of the first water providers to have an operational AOP system and one of the few water suppliers impacted by emerging contaminants that did not need additional time to come into compliance,” said PWD Commissioner Amanda Field. “The Plainview Water District has put in a tremendous amount of time and effort to ensure that treatment was in place well before the regulations went into effect. Seeing the fruits of our teams’ labor is truly remarkable, especially when you consider what it means for our community.” The treatment technology needed to remove 1,4-dioxane is called the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP). It works by adding a small amount of an oxidant into the water—in this case hydrogen peroxide—that passes through an ultraviolet light reactor destroying the 1,4-dioxane molecules. From there, the water then travels through Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration— industrial-sized carbon filters—so the remaining

detections of the oxidant as well as other volatile organic compounds can be removed before water goes through the rest of the treatment and delivery process. This treatment duo, which is also effective at removing PFOA and PFOS, is the only method approved by state and local health departments to remove these synthetic compounds. “This has been a herculean effort by our staff and our engineers to bring this facility from drawings into real life,” said PWD commissioner Andrew Bader. “This plant was built for longevity, meaning, over time, it will produce billions of gallons of the highestquality drinking water for the Plainview-Old Bethpage community. The Plainview Water District (PWD), along with area elected officials, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the recently completed, state-of-theart treatment facility that was specifically designed to remove the emerging contaminants 1,4-dioxane, PFOA and PFOS from the community’s drinking water. Plant 1, located at the District’s headquarters on Manetto Hill Road, is a $7.6 million facility capable of producing up to four million gallons of highquality drinking water each and every day. The Plainview Water District has emerged as a leader in water treatment and has successfully put more Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) systems in place than any other water supplier on Long Island. “This is a significant moment for the PlainviewOld Bethpage community as it marks a major advancement in our abilities to provide our residents with the highest quality water for decades to come,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “Even before talks about regulating these new contaminants started, we were working on plans to construct this facility. Here we are, several years later with the project completed, serving water to our customers that is in compliance with some of the strictest regulations in the country. It is a proud day for the water district and our community.” In August 2020, the New York State Health Department finalized regulations establishing maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for emerging compounds 1,4-dioxane, PFOA and PFOS. The District started planning to build this treatment facility in 2018; at the same time the state started discussions about regulating these contaminants. Due to its proactive stance and sound financial planning, the District was able to fund

Moderna Vaccinations Available 3pm to 8pm on First-Come, First-Served Basis Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that the Town will offer free walk-up COVID vaccinations to residents Tuesday, May 11th, at the Hicksville Community Center between the hours 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on both days. Vaccinations of the Moderna vaccine will be offered at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. Follow up appointments for the required second dose of the Moderna vaccination will be made at that time. “As many residents continue to roll up their sleeves and receive their vaccinations, we are pleased to be able to offer

this convenience to our residents who may have not yet been successful in securing an appointment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Located conveniently in the heart of our Town at the Hicksville Community Center, residents can just stop by and receive their first dose right on the spot.” The Hicksville Community Center, which has served as a COVID Command Center for the Town since the onset of the pandemic, also recently began providing saliva-based testing to students, parents and faculty throughout the Town. Through a new partnership with ProPhase Labs, this new, noninvasive saliva-based, viral RT-PCR multiplex-test is 99.7 percent effective and results are provided within 24 hours. The tests are expected to be available to

Programs Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin – in collaboration with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Thomas Muscarella and Councilman Chris Carini – is inviting residents to participate in the S.T.O.P (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Program to help safeguard our environment from toxic materials by properly disposing of certain hazardous materials found

in the average home. All S.T.O.P. programs will be completely contactless to keep residents safe in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants are asked to place all materials in their trunks and remain in their vehicles – employees working the S.T.O.P. events will do the rest! “The Town of Hempstead is dedicated to keeping our community green, clean and pristine, and we encourage all residents to join us in that mission by safely disposing of hazardous materials

at Town of Hempstead S.T.O.P. events,” stated Supervisor Clavin. “These free programs will be offered throughout 2021, so come on down to get rid of your hazardous materials while helping to protect our environment.” The town’s S.T.O.P Program is a simple and economical approach to the disposal of items such as batteries, certain types of cleaners, pesticides, aerosol cans and many other items. Beach Parking Sticker Distribution Begins May 8th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that seasonal beach parking sticker sales and the free distribution of stickers to senior citizens will begin on Saturday, May 8th. The Oyster Bay Town Board has restricted beach access to residents only and enhanced safety measures by installing signage and pedestrian barriers. Residents are reminded to be safe and cover their face when unable to maintain a social distance. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The summer season is nearly upon us, and many residents are eagerly looking forward to a sun-filled fun day at our beaches. By purchasing a beach sticker in advance, residents can avoid the inevitable lines that often accompany the start of the beach season and spend more time with their feet in the sand instead. We ask residents to follow the advice of health professionals and keep their family safe by socially distancing from others while at the beach and by utilizing face coverings if you’re unable to keep a safe distance from others.”

Beach parking stickers will be on sale daily beginning May 8th, from 10am to 2pm, at TOBAY Beach, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing and at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa. Beginning May 29th, sticker sales will also be available at Philip B. Healey Beach at Florence Avenue in Massapequa, Centre Island Beach, Stehli Beach in Bayville, and at Ransom Beach in Bayville. To purchase a beach parking sticker for your vehicle, residents must present their vehicle registration and bring the vehicle they plan to drive to the beach since parking stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only residents may purchase beach parking stickers for Town of Oyster Bay beaches. Seasonal parking stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits. Free beach parking is offered to Town of Oyster Bay senior citizens aged 60+, the disabled and those on social security disability. To protect your health and safety during this COVID-19 pandemic,

senior citizens and the disabled will simply be asked to show their driver’s license and registration from behind the window when visiting the beach for the first time this season. A parking sticker will then be adhered to the vehicle to ensure continued free access upon future arrival through the established Express Lane. If seniors or those with disabilities choose to visit the beach in another vehicle, they must simply present their Driver’s License or Beach ID Card from behind the window and will then receive a free day pass. Town of Oyster Bay volunteer firefighters, members of the Armed Forces, veterans and electric port vehicle owners qualify for beach parking passes at reduced rates. Beaches are staffed with lifeguards and parking attendants on weekends only beginning Saturday, May 29th, and then daily beginning June 25th through Labor Day. Make Way for the Osprey PSEG Long Island Cleans Osprey Nests To Prepare For The Raptors’ Return

both the raptors and the electrical system in danger. Maintaining the nesting platforms helps PSEG Long Island maintain strong electric service reliability. As part of PSEG Long Island’s annual inspections of the transmission and distribution system across Long Island and the Rockaways, electric service workers take notice of any dangerous nesting activity near electrical equipment. Ospreys instinctively seek lofty places for their nests, often choosing utility poles and transmission structures. When ospreys build a nest on electrical equipment, it puts the nest in danger of catching fire, which can cause significant damage and outages to customers, as well has harm to the ospreys. The birds are at high risk of electrocution, as their large wingspan can complete the circuit

between closely spaced energized equipment or between an energized wire and a neutral ground wire. PSEG Long Island has installed 24-hour webcams at two of the nests safely relocated by line workers. Since the resurgence of the osprey population, PSEG Long Island and its dedicated team have identified best practices for when to move a nest, and when to create alternative safer nests for the ospreys. Long Island is home to more than 400 species of birds, including the majestic osprey. Ospreys are large beautiful birds and a popular sight on Long Island. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Long Island’s osprey population decreased and became endangered. PSEG Long Island is preparing for the upcoming osprey breeding season by inspecting known nesting areas, performing maintenance on the osprey cams it installed last year, and cleaning out debris and garbage in the nests located near the cameras in Oyster Bay and Patchogue. “On a recent cold, wintery day, crews visited the two osprey nests viewable via the PSEG Long Island osprey cam to clean and reinforce the cameras and remove debris from the nests,” said John O’Connell, vice president of Transmission and Distribution, PSEG Long Island. “We look forward to the return of the osprey pairs so we can all enjoy a glimpse of these majestic birds in their natural environment.” To view the work at the nest, visit https://youtu.be/ zFbNipM6ne0.
