he Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District recently celebrated the accomplishments of the John F. Kennedy High School DECA chapter, which had 74 students qualify to compete in the International Career Development Conference. Thirty-five of those 74 students will be participating in the prestigious international event in Nashville, TN. The students were selected to compete on the international stage based on their performance in the state round.

Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago. The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point. In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties. Armed with her magnifying glass and a stash of green pens – “only green,” she would say, “NEVER make corrections with anything else” – she quickly took me under her wing, and we became close companions, often taking breaks together outside in whatever patches of sun we could find, and occasionally heading out for lunch outings at Nathan’s, one of our favorite destinations. She would always order the fish and chips from Arthur Treacher’s, then laugh hysterically as I looked on in horror, marveling at why someone would go to Nathan’s for anything other than a hotdog. After a short time, we realized that not only had I attended high school with her daughter, Jennifer, but we now lived just a few short blocks away from each other, and we began to carpool frequently to and from work. On one memorable return trip, during a rather heavy rainstorm, I infamously “drowned” my car during an ill-fated attempt to navigate down

her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well. She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so. But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees. In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???” I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.) Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead. What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many. I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office. But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend. This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times. For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper! We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end. I will always treasure it. How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since. Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives. May you be at peace now.

National Ranking Syosset High School has been ranked No. 39 in New York State and No. 254 nationally in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings of the top high schools. The school also received a “gold star” ranking from the organization for its attention to preparing students for college. U.S. News evaluated more than 28,000 schools to determine the top public

high schools nationally, and in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. U.S. News factored in overall student performance on state-required tests, how effectively schools educated their disadvantaged students and graduation rates, which is a new factor in their methodology for this year’s ranking. Schools were also evaluated on how well they prepared

students for college based on participation in and performance on AP and IB exams. Syosset High School has an AP participation rate of 79 percent and received a college readiness index of 66.4, resulting in a gold medal distinction among the top high schools. Syosset High School has received high marks in past rankings of top high

schools conducted by U.S. News & World Report, The Washington Post and the website’s Niche.com and Finder.com. “It is an honor to be recognized as one of the top high schools in the country in terms of achievement and college preparation. This is the result of the collective and collaborative efforts of our faculty, staff and

administration, combined with a commitment by our students to regularly challenge themselves,” said Syosset High School Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante. “Furthermore, the support our students receive from their parents is a key factor that drives their success and helps to solidify the strong homeschool connection we have here in Syosset.”

This year, Syosset High School has also been named a finalist for the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award, an award it has won in the past. Only 19 schools in New York State are currently under consideration this year. Winners will be announced this fall.

In recognition of Earth Day and their ongoing efforts to be mindful of everyone and everything – including the environment, members of the student council and Earth Keepers Club at Village Elementary School in Syosset teamed to upcycle approximately 80 pounds of used bottle caps, beautify the school entrance and send an important message to others. Students collaborated on colorful art projects made from bottle caps of different colors and sizes collected through a schoolwide effort. Many projects were

created as murals, some as sculptures. Every piece of artwork carries a theme of respect for the environment and all living things and serves as an example of a creative way to reuse an item that would normally be discarded. The artwork is currently on display in the school lobby and main hallway. According to Andrew Fazzolari, an officer with student council, the two groups researched online to come up with interesting ideas on how to make the bottle caps into eye-catching projects that delivered

impactful messaging for others to take notice. “We talked about how all of these bottle caps usually get thrown away and how we wanted to do something about it,” said Andrew. “It was fun making them into something new.” Faculty members/advisers Eileen Hoffman (student council), Dianne O’Connell (enrichment) and Michelle Potvin (Earth Keepers) all contributed their leadership to the students’ effort. Every classroom participated in the collection of the bottle caps.

DECA Medals at State recognized for its significant growth in membership, as well as its community service and promotional campaigns this year. In addition to placing high in 47 different competitions, officers Zachery Appel, Matt Frank and Arjun Mehrotra were inducted into the state DECA Honor Society. Additionally, 33 students qualified for the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) held in Nashville, Tennessee from April 23rd26th. “Club officers and advisers worked arduously to prepare the members for the [State] competition,” said Arjun, who serves as president

of Syosset DECA. Arjun teamed with Sam Markowitz to qualify for ICDC in the Marketing Communications category. Overall, 20 Syosset High School students received top 10 honors in various categories. Additionally, the team of Justin Kang and Niv Skidan finished in first place in the Business Law and Ethics Team Decision Making category, with their fellow club members capturing third- and fourthplace honors in a variety of categories. Elaine Zseller has been chosen by the New York State Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS) to receive the Friend of The Council Award. She earned the award in recognition of a non-member’s contribution to the field of education.

Dr. Zseller has been instrumental in the analyzing the data from The Council’s triennial study of school superintendents in New York state. The 2015 edition of this study and its subsequent publication of results, “Snapshot,” is the fourth

edition for which she has been responsible for the statistics. “This award is well deserved and we are very proud of Elaine and the work she has done,” said Dr. Robert R. Dillon, District Superintendent, Nassau BOCES. Since, 2009, Dr. Zseller has been a program supervisor for the Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Department at Nassau BOCES. She is currently program supervisor for the Strategic Initiatives Department. She holds a Doctorate in Educational Administration and a master’s degree in secondary math education, both from New York University, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Concordia University Chicago.

Flame of Hope On May 24th, the Flame of Hope will start its journey across Long Island at the Eastern Long Island Torch Run from Montauk to East Hampton. On May 26th, the Nassau County Leg will start at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, run along Sunrise Highway, ending at Farmingdale State College. The Suffolk County Leg will start at the East Islip Fire Department, run along Montauk Highway and end at Farmingdale State College where they will meet with the Nassau County Leg & Special Olympics Athletes to run into the ceremony. These runs will lead into the

State Summer Games held on June 11th in Brockport. The Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics it is the largest grassroots fundraising and public awareness vehicle for the movement across the globe! The Art League of Long Island, located in the heart of Long Island, offers artists and would-be artists many opportunities to gain knowledge and expertise across a large variety of visual arts mediums. In addition to providing beginner to advanced instruction and skill-building for art professionals, the Art League also offers artists opportunities to display and sell their work in gallery exhibitions and fine art and craft fairs. 2016 promises to be a busy year for artists at the Art League. Of the thirteen exhibits scheduled for 2016, there are still four more juried competitions and shows open to local artists who wish to show their work and, depending on the situation, sell their work. “Long Island Life” asks photographers from Brooklyn to Montauk: what does living on Long Island mean to you? The exhibit will be on view July 2nd through July 24th. Deadline for submissions is June 1st. Exhibition juror is Neil Scholl. At the close of the year, the Art League’s Annual Members’ Exhibition

invites its members to submit one work of art to show in the gallery. In 2015, 233 2-D and 3-D works were on display. Due to the large number of submissions, the exhibit is broken into two parts. Part One will be on display November 12th through December 1st and Part Two will be on display December 10th, 2016 through January 8th, 2017. Entry into the exhibit is not juried, all members who follow the guidelines are accepted. However, awards of excellence and honorable mentions will be determined by a guest juror. The Art League’s Fine Art & Craft Fairs select only artists and craftspeople who submit sample photos indicating handcrafted works of superior quality. Of those selected to participate, care is taken to ensure a balanced representation of artistic mediums. Prizes are awarded to participating artists and craftspeople with the most innovative designs. The fairs run from 10am to 5pm on select weekends. The Art League’s 49th Annual Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair will

take place June 4th & 5th at Heckscher Park in Huntington. Deadline for artists and craftspeople to submit application is May 20th. About 75 exhibitors participated in last year’s event, with thousands in attendance. The 53rd Annual Holiday Fine Art & Craft Fair will take place December 3rd and 4th. Deadline to submit applications for this well-attended event is November 24th. Run for Hope 5K Hope For Youth is hosting its Annual Run For Hope 5K in Heckscher State Park on May 14th beginning at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the run support Hope For Youth’s mission of facilitating positive change in youth and families on Long Island through residential, out-patient and preventive services. Last year, the event was attended by over 200 participants who walked, jogged, and ran to help bring awareness to the agency mission and the programs offered to families in need. Since then, the organization has

grown with new programs underway including a drug and alcohol prevention program run in conjunction with the Town of Babylon and a runaway youth shelter meant to give teens in need a safe haven from abusive home life. “It’s an exciting time for Hope For Youth,” says Director of Program Development, Kate Travers. “Our Youth Shelter Program is almost ready to open. We’ve spent the last few months renovating the house with fresh paint, new appliances, and donated furniture. The hope is that teens living in neglectful or abusive

homes will hear about the home and contact us over Facebook or through a trusted adult to get help. That’s why we reach out to the community with our run every year. We need to get the word out to these kids that they have an organization looking out for them!” Like last year’s successful event, the run will include music, refreshments and a Zumba warm up. The National Association of Music Merchants and the University of Kansas have named Hicksville Public Schools a 2016 Best Community for Music Education. The distinction is earned by school districts that exhibit outstanding efforts and commitment toward maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum. The district is one of 476 school districts throughout the nation to earn the prestigious designation, and continues to excel in its music instruction and wide array of programs. To qualify for the designation, the district responded to detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. The responses were reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. “The receipt of this award is a validation of how dedicated and committed the Hicksville Public School’s Board of Education, administration, parents, teachers and students have been to the importance of music education within our school district,” said district supervisor of fine arts Philip Grusenmeyer. This year, 74 Hicksville music students were selected to participate in the Nassau Music Educators Association’s All-County Music ensembles, and an additional five students

were selected to participate in the Long Island String Music Festival select ensembles and concerts. The district’s music curriculum emphasizes the development of aesthetic sensitivity, self-expression, teamwork and creativity through the examination and experience of this performing art. Listening skills, instrumental instruction, choral singing and performance are all part of a rich and varied music program. General music instruction begins in kindergarten. In third grade, students have the opportunity to begin studying a string instrument and participating in chorus. Starting in fourth grade, students may study a band instrument. A wide range of courses in music is available to secondary school students, including band, orchestra, chorus, piano, music theory and survey of fine arts. E x t e n s i v e extracurricular activities at the secondary level support the music program, including string ensemble, jazz ensemble, marching band as well as the annual Broadway Musical play. One unit of study in the arts is required in order to earn a high school Regents Diploma; however, many district students go well beyond and participate in music ensembles and classes throughout their four years in high school. Through the district’s Arts in Education program, professional artists in the fields of art, music, drama and dance visit the schools throughout the district to

work with students and help them to understand the nature of their art form. Regular annual performances include at least two school concerts each year for all musical ensembles, plus the annual district concerts for the band, orchestra and chorus programs. Broadway musicals are also produced annually at both the middle school and high school. Hicksville schools are also known for their outstanding marching band program, which has won awards at the state and regional levels for many years. Hicksville students continue to cherish and benefit from the opportunities afforded them by the district’s robust music program, and they also recognize the impact of music from an early age. “Music makes me feel generous, like I want to give money to church,” said third-grader Hailey Muentes. “There are a lot of people around the world that don’t have a of things, and music makes me want to share.” “Music is a dream you speak, play or sing out loud,” said fifth-grader Komal Dhillon. “Music makes me feel inspired and happy,” said third-grader Kaydence Vosper. “It is like the stars in my sky.” “Music means a lot to me,” said third-grader Barbara Croce. “It expresses my emotions and feelings. When I’m upset, I sing. I love music.”

Students Soar at Science Fair

On March 19th, 7th and 8th Grade students from St. Edward the Confessor School in Syosset presented at the Chaminade Invitational Science Fair, an event that draws students from Catholic schools all over Long Island. Students spent the morning as ambassadors for their school sharing their experimental or technological projects and learning from their peers. Stephanie Calderone, Julia DeTullio, Sydney

Insall, and Sarah Ruggiero represented the Class of 2016 with topics including the biodiversity of aquatic microorganisms, methods of effective water filtration, hydroelectric wheels, and the effectiveness of antacids. Each girl achieved a 1st or 2nd place distinction in their respective category. Helen Andrade, Class of 2017, was in attendance as well. Her project analyzed how lasers can be used to measure the sugar

content in various liquids by measuring the angles at which light passes in an out of their glass containers. For her demonstration and efforts, Miss Andrade won the highest honor of Best in Show, making St. Edward’s history. The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District recently celebrated the accomplishments of the John F. Kennedy High School DECA chapter, which had 74 students qualify to compete in the International Career Development Conference. Thirty-five of those 74 students will be participating in the prestigious international event in Nashville, Tennessee at the end of

April. The students were selected to compete on the international stage based on their performance in the state round, which featured more than 2,000 business-focused high school students from throughout New York State. John F. Kennedy High School DECA advisor Lindsay DeLucca was also honored with the Outstanding Service to DECA Award. This award

is presented to a New York State DECA advisor who goes above and beyond for the DECA organization. Lindsay has served as DECA advisor at JFKHS for 10 years and has served on the NYS DECA Board of Trustees for five years. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Artistic Abilities Students at Hicksville High School expressed their support of the Hicksville Public School District’s anti-bullying initiatives through an arts contest hosted by the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying. Students in each of the high school’s grade levels participated in the competition, and the winners were each honored at an awards ceremony held at the Kristoff Theater and attended by members of the

district’s administration and LICAB. The contest, which tasked the 75 participating students with expressing their individual visions for what a bully-free community looks like through the mediums of literature, visual arts or multimedia, awarded first- and secondplace prizes of $250 and $150, respectively, to two students in each grade level. The first-place winners were senior Gabriella

Morante, junior Kenneth Goubran, sophomore Medjie Chery and freshman Ariel Andi Yeh. The second-place winners were senior David Nakashian, junior Harleen Kau Anand, sophomore Alexa Kozak and freshman Sage Boiko. The students’ beautiful works of art highlighted not only their creativity, but also their willingness to take a stand against bullying.
