Supervisor Saladino, himself a musician and member of an accomplished local band, said that selected bands will be given an incredible opportunity to compete live at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Music Under the Stars Concert Series on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at John J. Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column

ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

Seeking Specialists The Town of Oyster Bay is seeking Activities Specialists for its Group Activities Program (GAP) Summer Day Camp, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto announced. The Town has openings at its camp at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, which will be held from July 5th, 2017

through August 11th, 2017 between the hours of 9:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. “The six week program is extremely rewarding and entails working with special needs children and adults between the ages of 5 and 21,” Councilman Imbroto said. “The job is ideal for educators who are off for the summer. It

is also a great opportunity for young people seeking to build up their resume.” Councilman Imbroto said applicants will take a leadership role with running the various activities. They must have a Bachelor’s Degree and have completed 1600 hours working with special needs children and adults.

Named Honorary Chair Over a century ago, in 1910, President Teddy Roosevelt co-founded the Boy Scouts of America. Seven years later, he established one of America’s first regional scouting organizations – the Nassau County BSA Council – where he served as its first commissioner, as well as leader of his hometown, Oyster Bay, boy scout troop. Throughout 2017, this historic council – now known as the Theodore Roosevelt Council, in honor of its esteemed founder – is hosting a year-long 100th birthday celebration. Theodore “Ted” Roosevelt IV, a Managing Director in Barclays Investment Banking and President Roosevelt’s great grandson, has been named Honorary Chairman of the Theodore Roosevelt BSA centennial events program, which will take place in each of the next 11 months. In his first action as Centennial Chairman, Mr. Roosevelt announced the Council’s new Theodore Roosevelt Centennial Award Medal, which bears the sculpted likeness of President Roosevelt and TR’s inspirational BSA quote, “Far and away, the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” “The “Old Lion” [President Theodore Roosevelt] was a great

outdoorsman and conservationist, a lifelong proponent of physical fitness and a dedicated civic activist, who wholeheartedly believed in the values of “paying forward” while serving God, country and community. As a combat swimmer, the same love of country, mental and physical preparedness, tenacity, personal integrity and dedication to team and excellence that saw him graduate the Navy’s extremely rigorous and competitive Basic Underwater Demolition School, or BUDs, also were prevalent when he achieved his undergraduate and MBA degrees from Harvard Business School and served as a Foreign Service Officer in the Department of State. “Ted joined Lehman Brothers in 1972 as a general banker in domestic corporate finance,” continued Mr. Grosskopf. “By September 2008, when Barclays acquired Lehman’s North American assets, Ted had distinguished himself in the firm as a Managing Director, Chairman of its Financial Products Inc., Chairman of Lehman

Derivative Products Inc., and Chairman of Lehman’s Council on Climate Change. In addition to his corporate responsibilities at Barclays, Mr. Roosevelt IV serves as Board Chair of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, Secretary of The Climate Reality Project, member of the Governing Council of the Wilderness Society, and a Trustee for the American Museum of Natural History. He previously was an Advisory Committee Member on the MIT study, “The Future of Natural Gas”; and on the Advisory Committee for the Council on Foreign Relations Special Report, “The Future of US Special Operations.” Currently he is a committee member for the National Academy of Sciences on Accelerating Deployment of Clean Energy Technologies, as well as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, The Economic Club of New York, and a Governor of the Foreign Policy Association. The BSA’s Theodore Roosevelt Council, with headquarters in Massapequa, NY, is one of the oldest and largest scouting councils in North America. Students at Hicksville Middle School participated in an after-school Book Spine Poetry Contest in the school’s library. The activity tasked students with selecting several books off of the

library’s shelves, and creating a short poem based on the titles on their spines and fronts. Students first studied the titles of their selections and how they can be thematically and contextually weaved

Book Spine Poetry Contest together, then wrote their poems using proper transition words. The activity was a fun and unique way to promote creativity and imaginative literacy among students.

PTA MEETING - Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino recently joined with the Kramer Lane PTA at the Kramer Lane Elementary School in Bethpage. Supervisor Saladino discussed mutual efforts and commended the organization for being a vital resource for parents, and a strong advocate for public education.

ETHICS TRAINING - Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino joined with other Town officials this week, as the first employees to complete the Town of Oyster Bay’s new mandatory Ethics training program. This marks another huge step towards ethics reform for the Town and in establishing the highest ethical standards of any municipality. Town officials on hand included with Supervisor Saladino, Oyster Bay Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr., Councilman Louis B. Imbroto, Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, and Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella.

Members of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Memorial Day Parade Committee came together during the meeting to plan and prepare for the 2017 Memorial Day Parade.

The Late Honorable Judy Jacobs, Nassau County Legislator, was recently lauded as one of the most devoted supporters of public education on Long Island. Ms. Jacobs was among 14 honorees to receive the 2017 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award, bestowed on those individuals and organizations whose impact on public education in Nassau County can be measured in tangible ways. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the award to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides in accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. Hundreds of educators from across Long Island gathered to honor the memory of Ms. Jacobs at the Education Partner Awards Gala, held last month by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative

educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. A staunch supporter of public education, Judy Jacobs was continually engaged with her constituent school districts. She forged a relationship between Northwell Hofstra Medical School and her local districts, giving secondary students the opportunity to work with doctors and medical students. Ms. Jacobs taught civics at the high schools, discussing the role and responsibilities of the government and the importance of voting and being an active citizen. She invited students to sit in legislative chamber, giving them a real-world, hands-on experience with government. Ms. Jacobs was a fixture in the schools, always on hand to congratulate students on their achievements, attending district events, and reading to younger students. She worked to raise revenue in support of the schools, funding everything from educational technology to playground equipment and bleachers. A regular panelist at the annual PTA-sponsored Legislative Breakfast, Ms. Jacobs was always open to hearing about districts’ needs. A strong proponent of early childhood education, Ms. Jacobs founded the

Nassau County Childcare Commission, ensuring that every child receives the best possible social and educational experience. She was also an advocate of student safety and fought for additional stop signs, crossing guards and traffic lights. Ms. Jacobs was the first woman to serve as Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature. In that role, she helped to form the Nassau Interim Finance Authority, bringing the county out of a fiscal crisis. She was honored as a Lifetime Member of the PlainviewOld Bethpage PTA Council. “Judy Jacobs was a fierce advocate for public education and a champion of local school districts,” said Nassau BOCES Board President Eric Schultz during the award presentation. “She began her career as a teacher and remained an educator her entire life, teaching others to work together and respect one another. Little Wonderland Daycare OUR PROGRAM

We offer both full-time and part-time care. Full-time care is available 5 days a week. Part-time care is available 2, 3 and 4 days a week. Our rates are very competitive and affordable. All Staff is CPR and adult & pediatric first aid certified. Little Wonderland accepts enrollment for children between the ages of 18 months to 5 years old throughout the year. Our program also accepts school-aged children (up to 12 years of age ) for before and after school care. We have an assigned school bus stop, so the children can be picked up and dropped off at our daycare (bus pick up and drop off is only available for students attending school in the Farmingdale School District). Our daycare is open Monday - Friday from 7:00am - 6:00pm. All meals and snacks are provided by us and are included as part of our program. Our program offers a variety of activities. All are structured to be age-appropriate and foster a sense of learning that is fun and interactive.
