This morning I was speaking to someone very important in my life and I expressed that I felt as though something was holding me down, making me feel heavy and sad. Yes, I was feeling a bit depressed today. I’ve never been completely comfortable baring my soul to people in my life, instead feeling more at home in the position of helper as opposed to helpee. When, I myself, am struggling, I will rarely venture to confide in someone, and when I do, I expect a lot of the typical platitudes and that’s okay. I know that just because someone loves you, it doesn’t mean they are always going to have just the right words at just the right time. That’s been my job (literally). But I have to say, this one shocked and amazed me. I’ll never doubt the value of a good heart to heart pep talk again. I think I said, “I can’t do my column today, I just can’t. I’m feeling too down in the dumps

(yes, it happens). I thought I was going to be fully supported in throwing in the towel for the week. If I’m being honest, that is what I thought I wanted. Instead, he said to me, “Do you know why I wake up at 4 AM each morning to go to the gym before I start my day?” I was tempted to say, “Um, because you’re crazy?” I get up at 6 AM, and as you all know, 6 AM to 7 AM is my sacred morning hour, but 4 AM would never happen. A girl needs her sleep! My friend continued, “I get up at 4 AM each day to go to the gym and purposely lift weight that drags me down and offers me resistance so that I can overcome that resistance, lift myself back up and build more muscle.” I knew he was a workout devotee, but I must admit, I never thought of it as a metaphor for life. And to think I’ve watched every Rocky movie ever made. I’ve had plenty of moments in my life where things were so smooth and I was so ridiculously blessed that being happy, enthusiastic and inspired was a no-brainer. What I have humbly

come to realize is that when you preach from a privileged soapbox, you can only reach so far. Yes, the last several months have been filled with some interesting ups and downs and some things that haven’t felt so pleasant. They have also been filled with massive growth and perspective, and yes, I have been developing a lot of new muscles. I was not let off the hook this morning. The beautiful thing is that not having to write was what I wanted, but not what I needed in order to grow. I needed to be stretched past my comfort zone today, lovingly yet firmly. We all fall into that trap at times, where we are looking for excuses to be less than great. At that moment this morning, someone loved me enough to remind me that although my reason to not want to write this particular column was valid, it would not take me where I needed, and ultimately wanted, to go. Pushing past some temporary discomfort to get the job done would.

75th anniversary of D-Day Reminding visitors that American G.I.’s faced fierce and deadly opposition when they liberated Europe during World War II, the Museum of American Armor will introduce enemy armor into the presentation as they observe the 75th anniversary of D-Day inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island, during “World War II Weekend,” Saturday, May 4th and Sunday May 5th, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. A replica German sturmgeschütz assault tank will be joined by scores of military living historians who will operate Allied tanks, halftracks, armored cars and artillery in field exercises that recall an era when democracy faced a mortal threat. World War II Encampment Weekend will also challenge youngsters with mock field exercises while reenactors

present uniforms, tactics, and weapons of that era against a backdrop of an armor parade that rivals the newsreels of 75 years ago. History Channel’s Historian Emeritus Dr. Libby O’Connell said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our nation... and our world. It is worth a visit by every American family, regardless of their ethnicity, because this is the story of all of us.” Museum board member Michael Sapraicone, president of Squad Security, stated, “The Armor Museum offers a powerful presentation that evolves year to year that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given us.” On the morning of June 6, 1944, American and British forces landed along the French beach

of Normandy under withering enemy fire to begin the task of liberating Europe from Nazi forces. Now, 75 years later, the World War II Encampment Weekend makes special effort to remember their sacrifice. The total number of casualties that occurred during Operation Overlord, from June 6 (the date of D-Day) to August 30 (when German forces retreated across the Seine in France) was over 209,000 Allied causalities. Sapraicone noted, “One can never overestimate what was at stake in the defeat of Nazi Germany and for the Allies, it began on the beaches of Normandy 75 years ago.” Admission is $14 for adults, $8 for children (5-12), seniors (60+), handicapped, volunteer firefighters and veterans (Please provide ID). Although BACA Members have witnessed how well their process works for many years, no one needs to take their word for it any longer because a four year independent study by professionals in the field, recently revealed that BACA children achieve “statistically significant improvements” in all behavioral and emotional categories. This greatly contributes to expediting the overall healing of the child on many levels, so their fear is quickly replaced with confidence. This conclusive study was published in the International Journal of “Evaluation and Program Planning” and can be found in its entirety on the BACA website. To date, their success with abused children has enabled BACA to spread to 17 countries, 47 states and thousands of members. If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a Cleared Supporter, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance. The members of BACA are all volunteers that do not receive payment of any kind, and they also pay for all their own expenses. They will tell you their payment is far more significant than money. Their payment is seeing first hand how their involvement empowers children and contributes to their

Let's Make Dirty Rice Dirty Rice is a fun and variant rice dish, with plenty of room for improvisation. Even better, you can make a vegan version or incorporate sausage into the dish. What You Will Need

1 cup White Rice 1 generous dash of turmeric 1 dash of black pepper 1 dash of sea salt Finely chopped half red pepper Finely chopped half green pepper Finely chopped portabello mushrooms 1/4 cup lentils 1/4 cup black eyed peas 1/2 cup green peas Finely chopped sausage (whatever kind you prefer) to taste (optional)

Preparation Soak lentils and black eyed peas together in a medium stovetop pot of tepid water for 30 minutes to soften them. Then rinse them and place them in fresh water, letting them simmer on medium heat for approx. 45 minutes or until they are soft, but still intact. Set aside and cover to retain heat. Boil and then simmer rice, according

to box instructions. Rice typically boils vigorously for 1 minute and then simmers on low heat with a closed lid for approx. 25 minutes. Chop up all veggies and steam on the stove top until they are all tender, yet firm. Add and mix turmeric, black pepper and salt into rice as it is cooking. Rice should turn yellow. Microwave frozen, steam-able green peas for speed. Add all vegetables, along with lentils and black eyed peas, into the rice and stir. If desired, cut up your sausage into round disked slices and then cut those slices into fourths. If pre-cooked, add into rice mixture. If not, cook first and then add. Let entire rice mixture continue to heat on low heat with lid, on the stove top for 20 more minutes, and enjoy! Two Milos Better Than One partners to build their Milos then programmed them on an iPad to be controlled via Bluetooth capability. Each pair controlled their robots in an attempt to pull a Lego flower. On the following day, two groups combined their rovers to double the strength and create an easier pull.

Additionally, using two Milo rovers allowed for turning and moving that was unavailable with just one. The lesson incorporated technology and engineering while adding the fun of how scientists and astronauts use rovers in outer space.

Testing Wind Strength the machine’s blades. The following day, STEM teacher Srividya Sridharan tested each group’s work by using a classroom fan at different speeds. From there, students modified their turbines to move at all velocities. The true evaluation of strength came when a bucket of marbles was attached to each turbine’s rotator. The experiment revealed the combination of strength and movement

of the turbines and whether the machines could move at the low speed of the fan with weight. Students continued to add marbles to test the durability of their projects. “The students really enjoyed this project as the lesson combined education and a sense of competition and excitement between groups,” said Mrs. Sridharan.

Portraying The Historical The second grade at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Kramer Lane Elementary School hosted a wax museum on April 12, when students portrayed historical figures. Students spent time preparing for this event by researching famous individuals to feature.

Among those selected were Babe Ruth, Betsy Ross, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Amelia Earhart and Barbara Walters. On the day of the presentation, the second graders lined the school’s all-purpose room while district administrators and parents visited the “museum.” Dressed as

their subjects, students wore buttons that attendees could push in order to hear a biography. The district congratulates these students for planning and executing an informative event about important people in history.

Syosset Sanctuary For Children In 1893, the Sisters of Mercy purchased 120 acres of farm land in Syosset, Long Island to offer some good fresh country air to the poor ailing children that they cared for in Mercy Home in Brooklyn, New York. These children were left homeless and parentless in the aftermath of the Civil War. The new building was speedily completed and on July 16, 1894, the first mass was celebrated in the chapel and plans were made to bring the children from the Mercy Home to their new country residence which would be known as St. Mary of the Angels. By winter of that same year, there were 175 little boys sleeping in the dormitories and regularly attending classes taught by the Sisters in the West wing of the new building. There

were 5 Sisters assigned to the care of the children. On July 4, 1899, the Angel Guardian Home was founded in Brooklyn, New York to serve the needs of 90 orphaned little girls ranging in age from 3 to 5 years old at the request of Bishop Charles McDonnell. Six Sisters were on the original staff to care for the little ones. In 1900, Angel Guardian began providing postnatal shelter to homeless mothers and their babies and 1903 saw the beginning of its foster care program. In 1947 Angel Guardian Home began its adoption department. One of the things that Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, was known for was tending to the needs of the time. From the very beginning of the founding

of the Sisters of Mercy ministries in the Brooklyn/ Long Island areas, the needs of the time were always being met and revised. Over the years the populations at St. Mary’s and Angel Guardian grew due to events like the Great Depression and World War II. There were and continue to be changes in the child care system that also prompt response to the needs of the times. In 2003, the needs of the times were met by merging St. Mary’s Children and Family Services with Angel Guardian Children and Family Services and MercyFirst began. MercyFirst continues in children and teens with serious medical and mental health needs. This will be a year of celebrating 125 years of Mercy-filled services.

Flying Into Spring Kindergartners at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Charles Campagne Elementary School celebrated the start of a new season with a spring craft activity on April 12. Parent volunteers joined

the students and teachers in the school’s all-purpose room to craft butterflies using various materials. Students colored the wings of their butterflies, which they decorated with jewels, and used clothespins to form the bodies and faces.

The volunteers encouraged each student to share their creation as a special gift for a loved one. The district thanks the parents for bringing this special activity to the kindergarten classes.

Champion Robotics Team Congratulations to the Hicksville High School robotics team, the J-Birds, and their coach Catherine Temps on their advancement to the FIRST World Championship in Detroit, April 2427. Hicksville recently competed at two SchoolBusiness Partnership of Long Island Inc. Long Island Regional FIRST competitions held at Hofstra University, taking first place in one and finishing fourth in the other. The J-Birds won the first-place award with their two alliance partners, Great Neck South High School and Tappan Zee High School. By defeating teams from the U.S. as well as international teams from Brazil, Canada, China, Israel, Norway, Taiwan and Turkey, they qualified for the FIRST

World Championship. In the second regional competition, the J-Birds advanced to the semifinals, placing fourth along with alliance teams from Mineola High School and Wheatley High School. This year’s game, “Destination: Deep Space,” required alliances to maneuver their robots in a sandstorm with the task of placing polycarbonate hatch covers and orange rubber balls, or “cargo,” onto rockets and cargo ships. They were then required to return to their HAB platform (a selfcontained habitat used by space crews) and climb onto it at the end of the match, all within a given time period. “This team plays from the heart,” said Temps, who is a technology teacher as well as the robotics coach. “They put in a lot of hard

work and focus on the given task every year. I am very proud of all that we have accomplished together.” The drive team – driver Alexander Diaz, operator Nina Carlomusto, human player Alyssa Furman and technician Bryan Eichenauer – did a great job. They led the team to the J-Birds’ first victory in its 14-year history. Kudos as well to the scouters and all the students in the pit for their hard work throughout the two competitions. Special thanks to Zebra Technologies, a Holtsville-based computer engineering company, for donating $5,000 to pay for the J-Birds’ entrance fee into the World Championship. Good luck, J-Birds!
