Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn To Skate” this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone. “Skating lessons for people of all ages take place at our rink throughout the year,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Registration for Series 5 (May 3rd through June 26th, 2014)

will begin on April 19th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone 516.797.4126.” “Learn To Skate” offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels of figure skating and hockey. Skaters are grouped based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon, Saturdays from 10:50to 11:50 a.m. and Sundays from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for NEW members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. With the beautiful weather upon us, many might be inclined to hop on a plane and travel to a tropical island to bask in the warm rays of the sun. But why even leave Long Island? There’s plenty to do right here, in any season. I have to say, Spring is probably my favorite of all, what with the milder weather, the ﬂowers blossoming, the birds chirping – it’s full of promise and new life, a much-needed reprieve from the winter hibernation we all tend to retreat into. Take a stroll in the park, stick your toes in the ocean, have a picnic in the grass – anything to enjoy the great outdoors. Baseball season is underway, summer concert season is right

around the corner and miles of sandy beaches beckon just over the horizon. But Spring is here now! Enjoy all that the great outdoors has to offer before the thermometer hits 90º and everyone runs back inside to their air conditioners – a different sort of hibernation. And, hey, if you’re looking for something fun to read while lounging in your hammock or sipping your morning coffee on the veranda, don’t forget to check out Seasons Magazine for some great upcoming events, a listing of Long Island wineries, Mother’s Day gift ideas, fitness tips for Spring and more. For many years, Andros Island in the Bahamas has remained an untouched treasure for marine enthusiasts. From the white sand beaches to the deep blue holes, Andros Island has just as much to offer as any popular vacation spot. As I am writing this, I’m sitting on the beach, with no other human being in sight. This island is desolate. With an area roughly twice the size of Long Island and only three thousand inhabitants, Andros isn’t too crowded. The diving is simply incredible. During our first scuba dive of the vacation, we saw roughly eight sharks. Ranging from reef sharks to nurse sharks to a twelve foot bull shark, our first dive was full of big creature encounters. On another dive, during our safety stop, we were confronted with a leatherback turtle roughly the size of me. It was swimming around us,

and even let a member of our group take a ride on its shell. I’ve never been this close to a turtle in the wild before, and was curious as to why it stuck around. When we boarded the boat, we found out it was turtle mating season, which could explain its interest in us. We even went spear fishing on this vacation. With the third largest reef system in the world, fish were abundant. We caught nearly a dozen fish, and had so much fun while doing it. At the blue hole known as El Dorado, we dove nearly one hundred and fifty feet into the Earth’s crust. These inland ﬂooded caves serve as a time capsule, harboring the preserved bones of species that are now extinct. While surrounded by stalagmites, my family felt completely immersed in the history, culture and beauty of Andros Island. The bone fishing is some of the best in the world.

Although I didn’t get a chance to try it, apparently there are some monster bonefish in shallow water here. To get to Andros, it is necessary to take a small plane from the main airport in Nassau, Bahamas. This may be a deterrent to some travelers, but the island is worth it. With the clearest waters I’ve ever seen combined with undeveloped beaches, Andros offers abundant wildlife in a serene natural setting. Despite the lack of major hotels, there are plenty of lodges that a “high rise” hotel might offer. Many of us can go a week without a spa or basketball court. We aren’t going on vacation for those aspects. Andros Island proved to be one of the most relaxing places that I’ve ever been to, and I would recommend it for any adventurous person looking to spend a vacation on a surprisingly pleasant island.

Humanitarian Honored Chan Lian, a senior at Sanford H. Calhoun High School, was honored by more than 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala earlier this month. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. “Chan Lian has made a difference in the lives of those around her from the moment she walked through the doors of Calhoun High School,” wrote her award nominator. “Her truly kind, generous and thoughtful nature quickly shined through. Though she struggled with difficult academic subjects, she reached out with both hands to her teachers, classmates

and community. It is because of Chan’s open-minded and friendly attitude that the community within our classroom is so strong.” Chan Lian came to the United States from China four years ago without knowing a single word of English. In that time she has proven herself as an invaluable member

of both school and community and is beloved by teachers and peers alike. After arriving at Calhoun High School, Chan soon became extremely active in the World of Difference club, which is devoted to breaking down prejudices and making the world a better place. Since joining the club,

Chan has contributed to the annual Jones Beach cleanup, the Halloween dance for special education students, and the club’s recycling efforts. Chan was instrumental in expanding the focus of the ESL Buddy Club to include community building within the English as a second language program, as well as orchestrating a holiday giftgiving donation to a local home for pregnant teens and young mothers. Her impressive leadership skills led to her becoming the club’s vice president last year and president this year. Her creativity, artistic ability, organizational skills, responsibility and intense work ethic made the annual ESL International Luncheon a rousing success. Chan is also an active member of the Art and Japanese Culture clubs, and volunteers regularly in her community. She has raised funds for a local church, donated money and walked for the American Cancer Society, and contributed to relief efforts for the Bellmore-Merrick community in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. John Klatt Airshows’ – Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco Aerobatic Team, unveiled recently at the International Council of Air Shows in Las Vegas, will also be making its Bethpage Air Show debut. The airplane, a Taperwing Waco made famous by barnstormers of the 1920s and 30s, adds the modern twist of a jet engine that will thrill spectators with amazing sights and sounds. John Klatt, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Jeff Boerboon, a U.S. Unlimited Aerobatics Champion, will pilot the Screamin’ Sasquatch. The Bethpage Air Show will be held Memorial Day weekend 2014 at Jones Beach State Park,

Wantagh, on Saturday, May 24th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 25th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Air Show is free to the public, but the standard $10 vehicle use fee will be collected each day upon entry to the State Park. For 2014 NYS Empire Passport holders, there is no vehicle use fee charge. For $65, the Empire Passport permits unlimited vehicle access to most facilities operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Empire Passports are available for purchase at any Long Island State Park and can be utilized immediately and are effective until March 31, 2015 to enjoy the forests, the seashores and the lakefronts of New York State’s parks through all of New York’s beautiful seasons!

Nancy Avino is a registered nurse who has worked at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and Stony Brook for the past 20 years. Nancy has served on the committee for the Brookhaven Hospice Cocktail Party, which Avino’s has supported for many years. Meredith is the manager and face of Avino’s. She is currently the Vice President of the Bellport Chamber
