The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.” “The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders

experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.” Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier routes across Long Island. “The most trusted federal employees, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are routinely

The Honorable Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course located in Woodbury, is now open for another great season of play, according to Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto. For new and returning members, you can apply for golf membership registration at the Golf Course’s Operations Building held each Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. On the grounds of the golf course, a turn-ofthe-century mansion clubhouse offers The Woodlands Catering Facility and Golf Bar and the “Upstairs at the Mansion” Restaurant (516.921.5707). Golfers can also take a break at the “Halfway House,” located on the 8th tee, where they will have access to amenities such as restroom facilities and a snack bar. In addition, golfers have access to a fully equipped pro shop and a full range of

Just in time for the grand opening of its 46th season on April 8th, the Long Island Game Farm showed visitors its newly acquired alpacas as part of its expanding animal exhibit. The Game Farm received the animals from the Ceruti family of Shoreham, who have been longtime friends of the Game Farm. The Cerutis donated their backyard pet alpaca herd, consisting of Rosie and her yearling Robbie; Sophie and her yearling Rusty; Gracie and

her yearling Zoe; and one female named Melanie. Alpacas are a domesticated species of the South American camelid, resembling a small Llama in appearance, but considerably smaller. They have a silky fleece that covers their bodies and are shorn each year, producing between five and eight pounds of fleece annually. Some of their colors are black, white, brown and gray. Their wool is waterrepellent and is used for making coats, sweaters and

blankets. They are able to live in semi-arid habitats and are native to South American countries, including Peru, northern Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile. They also have cloven hooves that help them negotiate steep mountainous terrain. Alpacas are herbivores, their diets consisting mainly of hay, grass and ferns. CAREER WORKSHOP - Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia recently spoke to 7th grade students at the Semi-Annual Career Workshop Day as part of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Career Development Programs, which was held at Matlin Middle School in Plainview. The Plainview-Old Bethpage Career Development Program is designed to educate and assist students with their future career paths by introducing various careers to 7th grade students. Councilwoman Alesia spoke to the students to encourage them to continue to work for continued success in life.

Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

They are now living happily at the Game Farm and are looking forward to seeing guests and eating out of their hands. In the spring, they will have their coats shorn to make them more comfortable in the summer months. Melinda Novak, CoOwner, Long Island Game Farm will be using the alpaca fleece to make nuno-felted scarves, which will be for sale at the Game Farm and other local venues. Profits will be donated to The Butterfly Effect Project of Riverhead and Bellport, an organization close to Ms. Novak and Game Farm staff member Scarlett Green, who volunteer their time with the

Women in Hempstead, New York are invited to help address the need for affordable housing throughout the community during Habitat for Humanity’s eighth annual National Women Build Week. Habitat for Humanity, Nassau County (HFHNC) is one of more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide hosting Women Build projects with support from Lowe’s, Habitat’s longtime partner in the event. On May 2nd and May 6th, local volunteers will be responsible for raising all four walls as well as installing the roof shell for HFHNC’s brand new home build in Hempstead. This home will mark the launch of the third home constructed by HFHNC in that neighborhood. Kate Murray, Hempstead Town Supervisor, will be in attendance to support the large group of volunteers expected. “For decades, Habitat for Humanity has made the American dream of home ownership a reality for neighbors in our area and across our nation,” Murray said. “I thank

Superintendent Appointed On Tuesday, April 21st, the Hicksville School District Board of Education unanimously appointed Dr. Carl Bonuso Superintendent of Schools effective July 1st, 2015 through June 30th, 2018. “During the past several months, as the search process unfolded, it became increasingly evident that Dr. Bonuso possessed the superior qualities the Board of Education was seeking to lead the Hicksville School District and students to the next level of excellence,” stated Board of Education President Phil Heckler. “As Interim Superintendent, Dr. Bonuso has clearly embraced our community as his own and has demonstrated through his professional leadership and vision, enthusiasm and interaction with our children, personal integrity and commitment to our goals that he is without a doubt the unanimous choice of the Board of Education as our next Superintendent of Schools.” This appointment concludes an extensive superintendent search, which began in September 2014. The criteria established included the following key characteristics: an intelligent, currently informed educator with strong classroom teaching and administrative experience, someone who utilizes a collaborative approach to decisionmaking, a successful school district leader who is a visionary and innovative advocate for all students, an experienced administrator with a record of success in maximizing programs and services within increasingly scarce fiscal resources, a superior communicator with interpersonal skills who leads in a visible and approachable manner and an experienced proven educational leader who inspires trust and confidence in the school district, staff and programs. “I am grateful to the Board of Education for the confidence they have expressed in me to serve as your next Superintendent of Schools,” stated Dr. Bonuso. “During these past few months, as Interim Superintendent, I have had the privilege and pleasure to work closely with the Board of Education, administrators, staff, students, parents and community residents and to experience firsthand the professionalism and daily commitment to doing what is in the best interest of our children. look forward to continuing to work together on behalf of the children we love, support and serve.” Prior to joining the Hicksville School District, Dr. Bonuso served as the Superintendent of Schools for the Wantagh School District and as the Interim Superintendent of Schools for the Sag Harbor School District. Dr. Bonuso is an award-winning veteran administrator and educator and has been a guiding force in educational excellence and collaborative leadership. He is a well-known and highly recognized educator and has written numerous articles on topics ranging from “School/Business Partnerships,” to the “Image of a Leader,” which appeared in such journals as Kappan, Psychology Today and Today’s Education. He has led training workshops and presented both locally and nationally in such areas as: the new APPR mandates, effective schools research, creating a positive work environment, effective supervision of instruction and shared leadership/ decision making. In addition, Dr. Bonuso has served as an adjunct professor at Dowling College and SUNY Stony Brook, and is the former editor-in-chief of the highly regarded peerreviewed journal, Long Island Educational Review.

Some may even have a different Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), a trick used by thieves to hide the true identity of stolen cars. Look for: 1. Strange marks or scratches on the dashboard VIN plate or sticker inside the driver’s side door. 2. Any car documents where the VIN looks

altered. 3. Multiple VINs on different pieces of paperwork. 4. The seller’s name not appearing on car title or registration. What to do: Shop online at a place like carfax. com. Lorraine Marcis, science enrichment and elementary coordinator for the 21st Century program in the Bethpage School District, has been selected to embark on a research adventure of a lifetime this summer. Marcis was chosen, along with three other educators and 22 students from across the United States, after completing a rigorous application process. She will be joining a scientific expedition to the Cape Eleuthera Institute in the Bahamas, where she will participate in an intensive, hands-on research experience with residents and visiting scientists. “I’m very proud of the opportunity to represent Bethpage during this JASON expedition,” Marcis said. “Having

worked with them [over] the last few years, I have grown to admire the ideology of JASON and look forward to bringing the experience, my enthusiasm for science, and the hands-on knowledge I will gain from this into my classrooms when I return.” According to www. jasonproject.org, since 1990, JASON’s National Argonaut Program has provided hands-on, scientific fieldwork to almost 500 competitively selected students and educators worldwide.
