Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-profit organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. In this article we focus on their vital role in promoting foster care across Long Island. As next month is quickly approaching, it is appropriate to mention that May is National Foster Care Month, an initiative conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services. The month is devoted to “ensuring a bright future for more than 407,000 children and youth in foster care.” The average age is 8 years old for those children, and there is just about an event split between how many of them are boys and how many are girls. The month acknowledges foster parents, family members, volunteers, policymakers and others who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections. Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker. The goal is adoption for 28 percent. On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identification and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certifications in parenting skills. Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reuniﬁcation for children and youth in foster care. Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest. Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulﬁlling lives. VA-backed loan The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a program for acquiring loans through conventional lenders that will be partially guaranteed against loss through the VA. This enables a lender to give better loan terms, such as the option to pay no down payment. Interested parties need to qualify for a Certificate of Eligibility and then work with qualified lenders. Bethpage Federal Credit Union Relaunches “Difference Makers,” Its Youth Empowerment Initiative

Bethpage Cares, Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s charitable giving arm, announces the relaunch of Difference Makers, its youth empowerment initiative first launched in January, 2020, but then paused as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Developed to empower young individuals to come together to support their local communities, Bethpage will provide mini grants ranging from $250 to $5,000 to individual students and student groups, ranging from the 5th grade through undergraduate college, who share their desire to develop a project-focused program to benefit the community. “We want to invest in our children, the future leaders of our communities. Now that student activities have started to resume, it is important that we reinstate Difference Makers, which has the potential to make a big impact on many passionate young people,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Throughout the last two years, we have been

able to support some grant applications with a few highlighted below: Syosset South Woods Middle School students and Jericho brothers, 14-year-old Ben Ellis, an 8th grader, and 12-year-old Aidan Ellis, a 7th grader, requested grant money from Difference Makers to install a summertime butterfly garden that can be turned into a sitting bench in the colder, winter months, when the flowering plants are dormant. With their grant money, and collaboration with the North Shore Land Alliance, Ben and Aidan were able to successfully develop and install their butterfly garden and planter/bench at the Wawapek Preserve located in Cold Spring Harbor. Glen Cove resident, Elana Greim, a 17-yearold 12th grade student at Glen Cove High School, requested grant money for her Environmental Club, with the goal of implementing a school recycling program. With help from her Difference Makers grant, Elana and her club were able to purchase

recycling bins for 115 school classrooms. Elana believes that it is more important than ever to create recycling programs to help combat global warming, and to help make the Earth a cleaner place, one step at a time. August “Gus” Bresnaider, 18, who is currently a student at the University of Virginia, was an Eagle Scout with Troop 123 in Merrick and a 12th grader at Mepham High School when he requested grant money to improve a community garden at the Park Avenue Elementary School, in Merrick. With his grant money from Bethpage, Gus and his troop created new garden beds, including two wheelchair-accessible garden beds so that everyone could enjoy and take part in the upkeep of the garden. They also re-mulched the area and created a “Park Pride” sign on the front fence of the garden. Bethpage encourages parents, mentors, teachers, family and friends to encourage the children in their lives to get involved in their local communities. Long Island’s premier car show experience will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 11am to 4pm at TOBAY Beach (rain date May 1st). Town To Host The Special Olympics Spring Games In Farmingdale Over 500 Athletes To Compete In An Olympic-Style Contest On May 21st

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town will again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held at the Farmingdale Athletic Complex on Saturday, May 21st, the games will include a full-day of competitive track and field events for over 500 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches. These athletes -

children and adults with intellectual disabilities have dedicated months to training for an Olympicstyle competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games. “Special Olympics are an opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication, talents, and tremendous athletic achievements of athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers and stereotypes differently-abled individuals face,” said
